Who is the Steam Deck for?

Alex S. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "Valve’s announcement of the Steam Deck has been nothing short of controversial. While some are thrilled that the company whose name is synonymous with PC gaming is putting their R&D department to work with finally tackling the question of portable PC gaming others feel that the system is trying to cash in on the success of the Nintendo Switch."

It's for gamers who like to play games on the go and a lot of gamers who have been begging for a switch pro. Nintendos switch pro will only have an oled screen and valve decided to give gamers a better portable gaming system that's as powerful as the next generation switch but years before Nintendo releases it. Now a lot of gamers don't have to suffer playing with muddy textures on a lot of games like the witcher 3 on switch or doom. I can't wait to add the steam deck to my gaming collection

but asking for a Switch Pro doesn't help here, you aren't getting Nintendo games with this thing. I get the playing on the go part or if you only use your Switch for 3rd party games (if people like that exist) but this doesn't replace the Switch for me at all. I play all 3rd party games on my PS5 or gaming PC.

It's better to find a download of any nintendo switch game online and download it to play in better quality on your pc or steam deck. A lot of switch games have terrible graphics and bad performance. No need to buy games that are overpriced on the switch that runs terrible.

I cant wait for the steam deck which I know will be very successful. The switch sells mostly because it's the best option as a portable console right now which will be replaced by the steam deck that has thousands of games and it'll have better controls and online

Yeah, Nintendo games on the Switch like... all 4 or 5 of them... Mario Odyssey, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Smash Bros and... Splatoon? Compared to the 1000s of games on Steam; apparently all playable on the Deck.
This is good news though, in that this will force Nintendo to go back to the drawing board seriously, even if only for their next-gen console.

@SilverHawk - if you want to condone piracy, then that's your thing. Steam Deck won't sell 10% of the Switch, don't kid yourself.

@Master of Unlocking - lol 4 or 5. XD - I do hope this forces Nintendo's hand a little when it comes to the eventual replacement though. If we could get something similar in power in the next couple of years that would be fantastic.

I dont care about the sales of steam deck compared to switch but I do care about the quality of these devices. The switch is rubbish compared to the steam deck.. The steam deck is way better than the nintendo switch in every way and it'll be very successful because gamers have been waiting for a device like the steam deck for years. The few nintendo games that are exclusive to the switch are better played on pc with better performance and visuals which the steam deck will be able to play.

The switch will not see a successor for a few more years and the switch now is very weak and runs majority of its games poorly. Because the switchs Library consists of 90 percent ports of old games that are already on pc the steam deck will play all those games with better performance and graphics. The steam deck will also get thousands more games that will be released this generation that will never be on the switch. I see fanboys already hurt by my opinion because they only have one or two gaming systems that they are rabidly attached to but I'm a gamer that plays every system and owns them all and a proper pc. You nes fanboys have been begging for a switch pro that's suppose to be very powerful but valve will provide it so be happy.

There is a market for it. Handheld AAA games console with good specs that plays thousands of Steam games. Also you can connect to your TV, install any PC app, compatible with headphones, controllers and also play multiplayer too.

"It’s not for handheld players – they already have a Switch"

So because one handheld exists, another can't? and to be honest, I would rather own the Steam Deck than a Nintendo Switch. The Switch offers me absolutely nothing I am looking for out of a handheld device. I don't particularly care for Nintendo exclusives and it's just not powerful enough, so you can't guarantee that certain games will be released for it.

It's for people who want the steam games on the go or want to dock them in another room at home. It's that simple.

TheRealTedCruz64d ago

Doesn't even have to be Steam games. The system is open. You can throw Windows on the thing if you want to.
It's just a portable PC that Valve happens to be developing, manufacturing, and promoting.

It's just a cool piece of tech, and I hope it takes off.

TheEnigma31364d ago

ahhhh that's even better then.

"It's just a cool piece of tech"

That right there is what made me immediately want it. Signed up for the 512gb version like you. Can't wait
