An Update on Assassin’s Creed Infinity and the Future of the Assassin’s Creed Franchise

"From its action-adventure origins to its RPG evolution, Assassin’s Creed has shown how the decisions we make now, no matter how big or small, can influence the events of the future. After both Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla shattered records, we find ourselves in that very moment where we know the decisions we’re making for the franchise now will impact its future for years to come. Along with our announcement of new content coming for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, we wanted to share some key updates on the talented and creative minds that will now be working in a collaborative, cross-studio structure between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec that will guide, grow, evolve, and define the overall future of Assassin’s Creed that includes an important upcoming, early-in-development project codenamed Assassin’s Creed Infinity.

The new cross-studio, collaborative structure will be led by Marc-Alexis Côté, who will serve as executive producer of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. One of the founding members of Ubisoft Quebec, Côté began his Assassin’s Creed career working on Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood before becoming creative director on Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and most recently senior producer on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Côté will be joined by Ubisoft Montreal’s Étienne Allonier, brand director for Assassin’s Creed for the last 10 years, and their respective teams in ensuring the Assassin’s Creed franchise continues to exceed the expectations of fans who have been asking for a more cohesive approach to its development over the past several years."

Rest in peace. You will not be missed.

-Foxtrot108d ago

Yeah tell me about it, like haven't they learnt from Destiny, Fallout 76, Avengers so on

Oh well, this is an easy one, just don't buy it, let it fail and Ubisoft will learn

Lets be real though, Assassins Creed hasn't been "ASSASSINS CREED" since Syndicate and that game wasn't amazing.

I wish they would just reboot it

RaidenBlack108d ago

Or more easier, just Remake AC1 in a re-imagining sort of way. Non-RPG obviously.
Bustling city, interesting story progression and latest graphics tech. Simple.

-Foxtrot108d ago

@RaidenBlack1

Yes...all of this

Remake-reimaginings are a great get out of jail card for many decent franchises which have fell from grace over the years and not a lot of developers do it. It allows you to remake the game but expand on it, fixing the things that you messed up on the first time round.

For this game they can remake the first game, do something brand new for the second game but keep it closer to the same time period as the first game so they aren't jumping too far into the future. Then later down the line they could remake Assassins Creed II. Just seems like such a big time jump from 1191 to 1476, there must be something in between they could do, even jumping to 1754 for Assassins Creed III seemed like a big jump.

brewin108d ago

Boneheaded logic. Laughable that people are so entitled that they will say a game that is called something isnt actually that game because they dont like what its become. Thats like saying that Mario 3D World isnt Mario cuz its not the 2d Mario that I prefer. AC is still awesome, but if you didnt play them you wouldnt know. Valhalla is the best AC game yet, Ive played them all. If your not a fan then why even comment?! Jesus do you guys who always come on here and complain even play the games or do you just whine that every dev doesnt cater to your specific taste?! Get over yourself.

RosweeSon108d ago

Sad thing is they probably won’t learn but yeah won’t be buying this like I’ve not bought anything from them in the last few years, too standard 7-8/10 never excellent nor exceptional just acceptable and not bad 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣 series needs a break and some fresh ideas involving the quality of the gameplay and not just how they sting their fans for even more money each and every 12 months or so.

Ubisoft really need to rest 90% of their franchises far cry is bland and too cut and paste. No wonder people compared their logo to a poo I compare their output to one too 🥴🤗🤷 27995;‍♂️😜✌🏻 29299;🤣

@brewin

Jeez...what an absolute melt

Christopher108d ago

I've already played "ASSASSIN'S CREED." I don't get this fascination for wanting to play the same game over and over. Ubisoft has had some ups and downs, but there isn't an issue with them trying to evolve gameplay outside of just being the same thing every two years with different names.

I also don't think a ton of people remember how janky AC1 through Brotherhood were in many of their concept.s

-Foxtrot108d ago

@Christopher

There's evolving what you have, the games core elements and then adding brand new features which don't belong

Did anyone want it to be more like a RPG, hit enemy numbers, focus on action over stealth, go into mythology or fantasy rather than the hardcore Sci-Fi themes it had in place

If you need to do such drastic changes to make something fresh, for the sake of it then you've obviously lost sight of what the franchise was, or you don't have faith in the core elements, the identity of the franchise to continue making them so you should stop and make a new IP.

Take crouching for example, it's an Assassins Creed game, keyworld...Assassins and they didn't add a crouch button to sneak around or avoid enemies until like Unity..5 games in.

Games like Metal Gear Solid, Dishonoured, Hitman etc have certain elements Assassins Creed could have borrowed from but never did. They were so bothered about the action and being over the top that the features they should have focused on were left behind.

Even Ghost of Tsushima had better stealth play and it was nothing revolutionary, it was okay...did the job, it had a lot to improve on for the sequel but I still felt more of an Assassin in that game then I did in recent Assassins Creeds.

neutralgamer1992108d ago

RaidenBlack

You see how poor their remake is going for prince of Persia right now. This is UBI they are the MINI ea of greediness. At least with electronic arts we had micro transactions in multiplayer games but with Ubisoft we have micro transactions in single-player games. They make their games so boring and grinding that you pay $10 extra just for the booster to finish the game quicker

Christopher108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

***There's evolving what you have, the games core elements and then adding brand new features which don't belong***

I mean, that "don't belong" is where we all disagree and where you seem to draw some line. I also don't see how you evolve it without changing what it is or killing it off early on and just move on. It really is exactly like Mario games where they evolve.

***Did anyone want it to be more like a RPG,***

Yes.

*** hit enemy numbers,***

Yes.

***focus on action over stealth,***

Yes.

***go into mythology or fantasy rather than the hardcore Sci-Fi themes it had in place***

Yes, especially when those mythologies are actually Sci-Fi supported and tie direclty into the original themes and showed how they evolved over time.

***Games like Metal Gear Solid, Dishonoured, Hitman etc have certain elements Assassins Creed could have borrowed from but never did.***

Wait. So, make it like these other games, but not like some other stuff?

Sounds like you just want something more tailored towards you. I get that, but that doesn't speak towards the direction that was taken, especially considering it went in directions that didn't copy those games you spoke of because, you know, they had their own games out there at the same time and people could play those instead of AC Origins and beyond.

***Even Ghost of Tsushima had better stealth play and it was nothing revolutionary***

Better than Odyssey, maybe (you had to go hard in with critical assassinations and smoke bombs on some enemies). Valhalla? No, not even close to better. I've platinumed Tsushima and completed Valhalla. My stealth in Valhalla was way more refined and tailored than Tsushima. I mean, you could stealth kill targets in Valhalla, you had boss fights in Tsushima.

Chard108d ago

I’d argue nobody really wanted the sci-fi themes. Black Flag would have been better as a comfy pirate game without being randomly transported to an office

TallDarknWavy107d ago

Did you even read the article?
All it says is the boss wants to hire more women and minorities to make the team more "diverse" to better "reflect the player base"
As if people care what genitalia or skin colour the computer programmers have. Just hire the most talented people and stop with this bullshit already.

dreamed107d ago

Damn right brother 👍😎

dreamed107d ago (Edited 107d ago )

Ubisoft need to BRING BACK SPLINTER CELL CHAOS THEORY MULTIPLAYER...long live Michael Ironside....😎👍 🥳 I would settle for the original Xbox version with no patches right now....2006 was so long ago...😂🥳 Apart from the shitty double jump..lol

"You will not be missed."

Naw, not by me. I'm so done with the franchise after that last clusterbleep. I waited a couple months before starting to play it so they could work out bugs. Like a week after I start playing, they have some holiday event that breaks stuff, like expanding your ammo capacity. Do they fix it? Nope! Just let the event run its course. I do damn near everything in the game, probably 6 weeks later and I hit a game breaking bug right before the end. Find out the bug had been there since launch and they hadn't bothered to fix it. F em.

RaidenBlack108d ago

Woah! That's a whole lotta description for this submission ...
Anyways, isn't this sorta like Warzone? An ever updating common live service game influenced by different and upcoming CoD settings. Well not exactly same but still ...
Ah well, a live serviced AC? What IPs are left, Ubisoft, for you to live service the heck out of it?

Thank you for telling me your franchise is dead. Makes me that much more glad I stopped being an AC fan years ago.

TheRealTedCruz108d ago

I thought the series peaked with Brotherhood and 4.
I haven't touched the series in years.

BlaqMagiq1107d ago

I thought Unity (after the patches) was ok and Syndicate is actually underrated but after that I stopped playing. Not a fan of the whole RPG route the series has taken.

chicken_in_the_corn107d ago

Unity absolutely perfected the formula imo. Best setting too

dbcoops108d ago

"After both Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla shattered records,"

Apparently dead like how COD and Madden are dead. If people keep buying them at record numbers then they're not dead for the developer.

BlaqMagiq1107d ago

Those games weren't live service. Games like Avengers and Outriders are live services and not good ones at that. In fact Avengers suffered a $60m loss for Square Enix and they still haven't recovered from that almost a year later. I promise you if Assassin's Creed goes this route it will suffer the same fate. A name will only carry a franchise so far before it starts to fail.

Bobertt107d ago

The people who buy them are zombies who just buy it out of habit.

TheRealTedCruz107d ago

I did want to give Syndicate a try, but it was the odd, random game that just crashed when I tried playing it on PC; so I refunded it.

I just liked the setting, so wanted to give it a shot.

BlaqMagiq1107d ago

Understandable. I will admit the series did start to feel a little samey getting to that point.

Espangerish108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

Assassins Creed gets worse the more map markers and endless cookie cutter content they add. Each iteration has been more bloated than the last and the trend has now reached its inevitable conclusion with this…the addition of literally infinite bloat!

AC as a service….the exact opposite direction of I want.

dumahim108d ago

I especially loved that they consider a single cosmetic item a treasure "hoard"

brewin108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

In Valahalla, I played a mission where I essentially created Halloween by dressing up and going door to door looking for items for an ealdorman. This is not like anything I have ever played in an AC game and is the kind of thing that makes AC special. There are tons of nods to historical events and stuff like this peppered throughout the game. How would you call this stuff cookie cutter?! It is amazing that they are still coming up with things like this after all these games they have put out.

Whats also amazing is how much game they give you for your money. Sure there are lots of trinkets to collect, but most of them are optional. How you gonna complain with more game for the $? They totally changed the loot system so you dont need to constantly collect new armor, you can just find what you like and make it much more powerful. Im using the same armor on hour 85 that I had on hour 5. Most of the trinkets are optional and the game is still super long because of the main and side quests. Sure some of them feel similar, but there is incredible breadth of content here.

Maybe you are just bored with games and should find another hobby?

Yeah man, I don't get all the hate. I actually just went back on steam about bought the first Assassins Creed and now am on the second. I played a lot of them over the years on console but missed several. I am going to play them all in order. Game offers a lot for its price tag.

Espangerish108d ago

To be clear…I LOVE the AC games. I have played and beaten every single one since AC1. Quests like the one you describe are brilliant and why I love the series.

My issue is this. Take Origins as an example. Do we need 25 identical fort clear out and another 25 identical kill the ship captain and another identical kill the lead animal and another 25 identical find the hidden papyrus markers or 25 kill that guard who wronged me….this is what I mean by bloat and cookie cutter stuff. The side quests are often watch a cut scene then 99 times out of a hundred it’s go kill that guy in a base or fort or raid that base to find an object. It’s just too much and after the 15th repeat activity it adds nothing to the experience but drudgery.

Keep what makes this special which is epic story lines based around these brilliantly brought to life historical eras and cut out the fat is what I would like.

brewin108d ago

@ espangerish

Thats the gameplay loop. Yeah there are some rinse wash repeat elements, but that is with any game! They give you the tools to do all of the missions differently, so its only limited by your imagination with how to dispose of the enemies. Maybe it was a bit much in Origins and even in Odyssey. But Valhalla is a bit different than those as they brought back some of the elements of earlier games.

But as I said, that gameplay loop is there in EVERY game. I know people who play CoD, Fortnite, or Minecraft religiously doing the same damn thing each and every minute for hours upon hours! I think AC does a great job of breaking things up. There are many different side quests and activities for a reason. By your logic, EVERY single FPS is a boring trudgefest. Its the same loop over and over and over and over. At the very least, AC has a lot of variety in their missions and gives you the option to tackle missions as you see fit.
