Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PC is a disappointing, barebones port

Digital Foundry : Nearly two years after its debut, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is finally available for PC. It's a port of the PlayStation 5 'Intergrade' version that came out earlier this year and as you may have seen from the headlines, it's a contentious release to say the least. While Square-Enix's conversion retains all of the graphical features of the PS5 game, it's a barebones release, plagued with awful hitching and stutter problems and one of the most basic options screens we've seen in years from a major release.

I thought the remake was disappointing in general.

SegaSaturn669855d ago

Wait till modders remove all the filler and make it more faithful to the original masterpiece.

deleted855d ago

But you know they're more likely to focus their modding efforts on Tifa.

lucian229854d ago

filler? So expanding the story is now filler?

Lord_Sloth854d ago

@lucian229 No, padding the runtime is filler and this game had a loooooooot of it. The whole trainyard and Hojo's lab were just slogs to make the game go on longer and weren't even fun to boot. Both areas overstayed their welcome imo.

gamingtext2020855d ago

I’m not sure where you heard that from, the remake is pretty good.

Terry_B855d ago

Except that it is no remake and has only like 15% of the story from the original FFVII while it is full with filler crap.

ScootaKuH854d ago

I agree. I still prefer the original

Juancho51854d ago

Remake is Fantastic. Only people that actually hate it are the ones that are upset it wasn't a copy paste of the original. I like that they went deeper and made the game more interesting to returning players and didn't cater to just new gamers.

lucian229854d ago

somehow the same haters who say the game is 40 hours of filler also say it's only 15% of the story.

justadelusion854d ago (Edited 854d ago )

you cant say that, most of the ff7 fanboys be rabid and delirious - the original game was overrated AF as well. be mad with them downvotes lol.

_Decadent_Descent854d ago

You're right and although FFVII sits as one of my favorite FF's, it is the most overrated FF by far. IV-VI, IX, and XII are better, imo.

lucian229853d ago

12 is complete garbage lmao never bring that game up again. It was barely a decent normal jrpg

lucian229854d ago

wrong the remake was amazing. Only trolls who didn't play it don't know what the game actually is.

Babadook7854d ago (Edited 854d ago )

Exactly. It’s been a tough L for those not in the PS ecosystem. Obviously this game is phenomenal.

FF7r is a crap port of a 2 year old remake of a 24 year old game... and it costs 80€.
Should only purchase this if you insane or desperate.

Cyberpunk is a work of art compared to this pile of garbage.

pietro1212854d ago

Nope Cyberpunk is still a pile of junk even next to this port.

Sounds about right for Square Enix, the same people charging $170+ for the complete Kingdom Hearts series on PC when it's readily available for $40-and-under on console.

Good luck with that Square Enix. I believe that Forspoken will be a big flop anyway.

cluclap866d ago

I forspoken will flop but also be underrated. Like a lot of new IP's just depends on how they market it. Especially with it being PS5 and PC exclusives.

oldenjon867d ago

Jesus that is just too much for FF7R

spambot0815866d ago

too little for ff7r parts, too much for everything else they are currently working on.

Psychotica866d ago

Satan it really is, I agree..

Pc players torrent sp games no matter the price

Andrew336867d ago

How's farcry 6, ass creed valhalla, etc working out for you on torrents?

Stonilein867d ago

cant they not be pirated?

Andrew336867d ago

Yes, they can't be pirated like most pc games. For some reason apparently 5 people disagree with that.

FinalFantasyFanatic867d ago

@Andrew336,

But why bother? Far Cry 6 is on sale for about $15 on Steam, that's barely an hour's worth of work for me and I work minimum wage.

QuarkZ867d ago

AC:V has been cracked a long while ago, like most PC games. Some might be cracked late, a few never are, but your below comment "they can't be pirated like most PC games" couldn't be any more wrong.

Binarycode866d ago

Valhalla was pirated ages ago. wtf.lol.

Andrew336866d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic FC6 isn't even on steam, never mind being $15. What are you talking about?

ActualWhiteMan866d ago (Edited 866d ago )

@FinalFantasyFanatic
Far Cry 6 isn’t on steam….And it’s $60 everywhere still.

Trolling or just stupid?

FinalFantasyFanatic865d ago (Edited 865d ago )

@ActualWhiteMan,
Thanks, nice to see you're an asshole, you must be fun at parties with that kind of attitude.

@Andrew336,
My mistake, I thought New Dawn was no.6, but it's actually no.5 in the series, I'm not a big fan of this particular franchise, so I just pick them up whenever if they're on a good discount.

Most of us buy our games.... ya know, because we understand that there won't be games published on pc if most of us pirated.

Michiel1989867d ago

yeah its much better now, especially compared to like 10 years ago where everone was acting like Jack Sparrow.

Shiore2u867d ago

>"pc gamers just pirate their games111!!!!"
>every publisher including sony and microsoft desperately want to sell their games to PC gamers
Quite the paradox.

Snakeeater25866d ago

Yeah most of us haha that why seed and leech number are so high. No one pirate games

Fntastic867d ago

Just the usual console fanboy nonsense response when they have nothing else to say.

tronyx12867d ago

People can jailbreak console same as people can torrent on PC. It's much easier and much more reliable to just buy the damn game, not even touching in social features/ achievements/ cloud save.

This is a naive take on the PC landscape. Sony and MS bring their games to PC for a reason. As any developer do.

Psychotica866d ago

I have over 600 games in my Steam library and many games in other libraries. I don't have a single torrented game.

DarK-SilV867d ago

PcSheepRace crying about prices when they are one of the reason if not the biggest why pc market prices is missed up, regardless of crypto market, when brands determine what you buy and not performance, say good bye to that market,

Angyobangyo866d ago

Messed up prices? Comeback when Sony stops charging and extra $10 simply because it’s a PS5 title.

masterfox867d ago

Well done SquareEnix you funked up this one for good with that price Lol, hmmm or maybe the price was raised by EGS and not SE, so they recover their investment on this time exclusive for its store quickly , who knows, still nonetheless the price is braindead.

IanTH867d ago (Edited 867d ago )

Can't imagine it was Epic. They give away things constantly, and didn't raise the price for their other Square timed exclusives. I think Square is testing the waters. Hopefully they find them frigid & reverse this nonsense.

Edit: I see it's $70 USD here as well. Good luck, indeed. I almost never buy a game at $60, never going to happen at $70.

Michiel1989867d ago

cant imagine its epic either, why would they get to decide the price for a game? they get a cut regardless and i doubt they have anything to say about the price.
