After being one of the slowest to adopt cross-play, Sony Interactive Entertainment's president and CEO Jim Ryan has said the company wants more cross-platform multiplayer for PlayStation games.
From the article "There is also the recent issue with Gearbox and Borderlands 3, as Gearbox president Randy Pitchford recently tweeted out that cross-play would be coming to all platforms except Playstation consoles. To that, Ryan said he didn't want to talk about a "live business issue with a long-standing partner," but noted "our policies are consistent across all of the publishers."" I guess what Jim means is we're all about crossplay as long as our partner gives us money.
That’s the Jimbo way.
Yup money making scheme for them, for the players…. Ya right. Let the people play Jim.
Let the people play bethesda games on playstation Phil. Oh i forgot...money making schemes are only bad when Sony does it. Got it.
@VersusDMC Do you think they will let Xbox players get Spiderman, God of War and Uncharted? No? Then why the hell would Bethesda give games to PlayStation? They were purchased, just like Insomniac, and you have to accept it.
@VersusDMC that's not even close to being the same thing and you know it, (see GamerRN reply). I don't expect Sony to give first party games to other platforms either. It would be nice if they enabled crossplay at the developers discretion without the need for them to pay Sony.
their crossplay payment scheme leaking during the epic vs apple lawsuit also didnt help either.
Not charging for it would be a good starting point.
Maybe you should look into the fact why they charge and you may be surprised to find out that even Microsoft charges for cross play when items are bought on another platform and used on Xbox
@neutralgamer1992 Source? I’ve worked on multiple cross play games and have never once heard of MS charging for it.
Last time I saw Sony chaege for cross-play, so this is pep talk.
Of course they do. They make money from it.
Every platform that allows cross play makes money from it but the way they make the money is all the same. If I bought some skins for fortnite on PlayStation and then I was using them on Cross play playing against Xbox gamers that's where Microsoft wants money and the same thing goes for Sony they're allowing gamers to play so they want money
This is factually incorrect. Sony is the only company charging for cross-play scenarios like the above. Also, obviously if others were charging too, he would’ve simply deflected and said “we are in line with other consoles/platforms” not “we treat every publisher the same”.
Wow they charge publishers to support cross play? That is nuts
Can someone explain to me how much or do they actually 100% factual charge Devs to enable crossplay for each game? Or do they just ask for compensation like they do with epic for certain but not all circumstances.
They don't charge devs for cross-play that is taken way out of context just like many things Jim Ryan said because some people have a hard on of hate for him for some reason. What Sony ask's is that devs pay money to them when a game like Fortnite has cross-play and gamers buy MTX on the Xbox store then use it on their PS account through cross-play as Sony wants gamers to buy the MTX on the PSstore as they get a percentage of the profit but lose this when it's not purchased through their store. Every everyone does this even Microsoft does it when MTX is bought on the PSstore and not theirs. But for some reason Sony are the only ones getting singled out for this.
I thought as much. I read the documents in the apple v epic thing. They way clowns around here keep going on about Sony charging for crossplay I thought Sony was charging a few million each crossplay title or something. If I was Microsoft or Nintendo and players played fortnite mostly on my platform but bought fortnite coins on playstation or pc or mobile then I would certainly want to be compensated. Why would I want to host these players only for the rivals to make the money and not me it makes no sense lol.
Would you support Apple charging iOS developers for money they earn on Google Play for no other reason than the app being more popular on iOS? Same concept as here - Sony are using and exploiting their market share to bully their partners. Sony's contract with Epic for Fortnite also demands that Sony receive data like player platform distribution, playtime, and DLC revenue. And Sony takes a cut of *every* purchase not made on PSN per that agreement when their "royalty" threshold is met, not just PSN players that go between platforms. Sony gets their own 30% cut and a cut from users exclusively on other platforms. There is not a parallel to this in any other industry, and no MS does not have a comparable policy. On the contrary, they have cross-platform integration built into their dev tools.
Sorry, but you just said, "they don't charge devs for cross-play" while describing how they charge devs for cross-play. You've done a great job explaining it, so I'm curious how you don't see this as "Charging for cross-play" perhaps it's the wording. Maybe it should be said, "Sony invokes a tax on cross-play games which is evaluated on a month to month basis and if Sony determines they aren't receiving more than 80% of a cross-play game's earning through PSN then the tax is recognized and charged to the developer." You see that second statement might be more accurate but it isn't quite as easy as saying "Sony charges developer for cross-play."
I don't think people here care about getting the facts right. As long as they can twist the story to fit their agenda and attack Jim, they will be happy. As you can see, pointing out the truth has gotten you down votes.
“ Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed in testimony today that Sony is the only platform holder that requires this compensation for crossplay.” https://www.theverge.com/20... Where does it say that MS charge compensation from Epic for crossplay as well? Serious question, as I could not find that info.
Battlestar23 If this is true this makes so much sense and I'm not surprised by the hate on Sony or Jim Ryan. People want to talk about the fact that this site is pro PlayStation but if you look over the past 90 days there have been more negative articles surrounding PlayStation and Jim Ryan than anything else On daily basis we got praising articles for game pass what Microsoft showed on E3 etc etc etc
“Sony's example chart breaks down how its royalty payments would work. It shows how a game earning $1 million in a month across all platforms would owe Sony no crossplay royalties if $900,000 of that total came from PSN, while 95% of the total playerbase was on Sony's platform. In that scenario, the PSN revenue share works out to 90%—above Sony's 85% threshold, meaning no royalty is owed. Sony's justification for the royalty payment seems to be its way of ensuring that if a ton of players are on its platform, it's going to see a proportional amount of revenue on PSN too, where it gets a 30% cut of in-game purchases. If 20% of the total Rocket League playerbase were on the PS4, for example, but PlayStation players accounted for only 10% of the game's revenue (because players buy way more skins on PC, or something), Sony presumably thinks it's paying the PSN infrastructure costs for all those players but not getting the return it should for allowing cross-platform play. To "offset the reduction in revenue," the game publisher would owe Sony a royalty payment based on the gap between the PS4 playerbase and proportional PSN revenue.“ https://www.pcgamer.com/son...
I think it's crazy that they don't support cross play. It's just one of the ways that Sony limits their fan base and creates this holier than thou attitude amongst that fanbase. But with the technology that exists there's absolutely no reason for there not to be cross-play. It's definitely possible Sony is just too full of themselves to allow what's best for the community. all this talk about Microsoft and Xbox being anti-consumer but straight up Sony is being anti-consumer here in this regard. It's blatant arrogance and it seems that Sony hasn't learned from some of their past mistakes. people being able to play together regardless of what console they're playing on is good for gamers and gaming as a whole. It's really sad that Sonny doesn't see that and wants to nickel and dime developers who want to do this. why would publishers want to separate their fan base like that? The consoles are basically the same so we shouldn't be limited to who we can play with based on what console we are playing on. Simple as that. I really hope Sony wakes up sooner rather than later
They do support cross play and have been doing do for far longer.
Sony has been doing cross-lay since 2003 lmao
Jim Ryan should stop talking and just be a silent head. Give the mic to Herman hulst.
I don't like Jim at all. All lies.
Looks like Phil Spencer found its match.
What have Phil lied about recently?
@king at this point his name is probably not Phil Spencer. Almost every thing he's said from the point he took over was a lie or mistruth or slander at Sony.
Him and Phil both remind me of used car salesmen, it's just Phil is a little better at the job.
@darkborn Again, what did Phil lie about recently?
I only want cross console play. PC cheaters can go ruin games by themselves.
I'd probably be smashing my keyboard right now defending PC, but it's true. It's one of the reasons I quit online play.
Cheating on PC does suck but thankfully it's not all that common in the games I play. I still don't get how people find it fun to cheat in games.
but is it something people really need or want? i mean i dont think i can ever play with the same people again if they come from other platforms lol i feel like this is something a small number of ppl want, and they're just really loud about it haha.
It is a small subject and the majority doesn't care. Other companies make a big issue about it because they want Playstation's huge user base.
Look at all the downvotes for stating the facts. Smfh
“Majority doesn’t care” I’d like to see the stats on this
Yeah no one's believing that.
Sony offers the same cross-play Microsoft offers so what if they wanna make a buck that's in no way is anti-consumer in fact its a very American and worldly thing to do. I think Sony should take it farther and charge the gamer for cross-play and lets see how important cross play is then I'm guessing not very important.
Thank god you don’t work in the games industry. Imagine wanting to charge players for cross-play. That being said, you’d probably be an instant hire at EA or Activision lol.
Oh another entitled gamer thinking everything comes free. So people are just lazy and love them handouts.
The gamer and dev side of me both think that’s a terrible idea. There’s no increased service operational cost on Sony/MS to do cross play - actually it reduces service load because you typically have to roll your own MP services instead of using PSN/XBL. So there’s really no reason to charge for it.
Don't know why people are angry at sony because they take money for it. Playstation has the biggest community why should Sony give access to it for free? Sony is the one working and investing in the community to get and stay this big.
Who wants to play with pc cheaters
@Jls1 Good question.... No one wants to address this issue not gamers and especially not Developers and Publishers as they only care about getting your money. I was never for cross-play but as long as they give me the option to disable it I have no problem with it. The PC cheating problem will never not be a thing.
So you think players don't cheat on other platforms in one way or another?
@Johm_McClane Oh console cheats are a thing there's no question about that. That's the problem with cross play and why I choose to use the disable cross play option so I only deal with cheaters on one platform. Its so wrong that gaming cost so much just to get into the door no matter your platform. A PC, Xbox or a PlayStation all cost some good money just for the device then on console you got the ISP and multiplayer fee and the cost of a game all this just so you can be sent to a uneven playing field unless your a cheat. Developers and Publishers don't care Sony and Microsoft clearly don't care and this has led to rampant cheating on PC and console gamers using modded controllers that have built in advantages that so many have been using and using for so long they consider built in rapid fire, Auto aim, Drop shot and many others perks not cheats. So yes there's a huge cheating problem outside of PC.
It's funny how people applaud Microsoft for keeping Bethesda games off playstation and shit on Sony for charging for crossplay. Anyone who does both those things is obviously a Xbox fanboy.
Ah, thats not even close to the same thing. Also, Sony kept Spiderman off Xbox by BUYING the game rights AND the developer, do you recall that?! Insominiac didnt go to Sony and say, "hey, buy us and Spiderman so we can screw over xbox." Sony saw one of their go to developers branching out and swooped in with the hell naw, but you're giving MS shit for the same tactic? Previous Spiderman games were on Xbox consoles, or are you too young to remember?! Also, Insomniac made an exclusive for Xbox last gen called Sunset Overdrive, ever heard of it? It's actually pretty good and a mix between Spiderman and Ratchet and Clank with a more adult vibe. Sony snatched them up and ensured Xbox wouldnt get a sequel for that beloved game. And this time around, MS saw what Sony was trying to do when they bought some exclusive titles from Bethesda, there was even a rumor that Sony was trying to buy rights to Starfield at one point. MS saw they had to fight fire with fire, and Sony cannot keep up with the buying power of Microsoft, plain and simple.
Love the fan fiction going on here. Marvel went to Sony and asked them to make a Marvel game with the same quality of their first party titles and then sony thought of Insomniac and then asked Insomniac what marvel property they would want to work on. They choose Spiderman. Also when people asked Insomniac (before becoming a sony studio)when a Sunset Overdrive was coming they said ask Microsoft...Microsoft didn't care about Sunset Overdrive. So Sony stole a character that was given to them by Marvel and prevented a sequel from getting made on Xbox that Microsoft didn't want to make? Cool story bro.
@versusDMC Cool story bro, but it's not accurate. Sony had the movie rights already and decided to leverage that deal into their console business. Nice attempt to try and spin it though 🤣🙈 https://www.pcgamer.com/ave...
Is see you linked a story about spider man in avengers and not insomniac Spider Man...here is the story. And how Spider man is really not even exclusive to sony! Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 anyone? https://www.google.com/amp/...
No matter how hard you try to spin it, the point is valid. They have a deal and Sony bought the studio. Those Spiderman games won't appear on Xbox just as Starfield and other Bethesda titles won't on PlayStation. Who cares about the semantics of the deal, they still clearly have one.
Lmao what? Crossplay and exclusive game are two completely different thing. How are both even comparable? And if you want to go there, do you get angry at Sony for keeping all their first party exclusive games on Playstation and not bringing them to Xbox as well? Lmao.
Crossplay and exclusive games are comparable. You get exclusive games so people have to buy your platform to play it. You deny crossplay so people have to the buy the platform with most players or friends on it. Not that difficult to understand...
“ Crossplay and exclusive games are comparable. ” First of all, crossplay is NOT a selling point for a console like exclusive game, because if that was the case, MS would have already outsold Sony 10 to 1. Secondly, crossplay is just a nice thing to have. It doesn’t cost the platform holder billions of dollars to implement it (because let face it, if it does Nintendo and MS would have never allowed it, they aren’t charity organizations) and it let gamers play with their friends who own different console. As such there is almost zero reason to deny crossplay (unless you are Sony of course, where money seem to be the main speaking point in this matter).
Then how about stop charging developers money for it, it's that easy.
The Irony is, Sony isn't really the slowest nor never been. Just capitulate to Sony's royalty clause. Literally this is business. They got the largest install base so they want royalties for leaning into their base to populate their servers. Their platform generates most revenue. That's the leverage. If 2k wants crossplay, just cave. They won't, because they don't wanna pay royalties. Guess crossplay is at the mercy of money, because they're all greedy. Who would of thought?
You either do something or don't. They charge other companies for crossplay. Th is is just misderection/PR talk.
F*** that lol. Stay closed. If I wanted to play with people on PC I would have bought the game on PC.
Sony shouldn't charge devs for crossplay........They should deny it to begin with to avoid feeding the leeches. If they don't deny it though, maybe they can charge those who benefit from the huge playstation userbase.
One of the slowest to adapt cross-play? Sony was the first to support cross-play. Let's not rewrite history here.
