Metroid Dread Special Editions Being Sold for Over $200 by Scalpers

Recently pre-orders for Metroid Dread went live along with the amiibos. The amiibos were quickly purchased by scalpers selling them for twice the original price. Now the special editions have been sold out and being sold for over $200.

The issues originate from the companies. They should offer sales to loyal fans, but they don't. They sell their products to huge companies that will sell to anyone. In an ideal world, they would offer all of the limited editions to the biggest Metroid fans, with online they have the data to see who has put the most hours into each game.

Don’t buy from them there’s no market they gotta get a proper job it’s simple but then 😗😑😜 people pay £100-150+ For shoes… can’t be bothered to pre order or queue so just let these people go buy every last one and then pay 3-5-10X the cost absolute morons. Can't believe I was lucky enough to get one of the Special Editions. A friend let me know the moment he saw them and we each got one. 2 mins later they were sold out at Best Buy.

Did anyone see them up any where else though? Only place we found them was Best Buy. And we never saw the Amiibo listing up.

They went up at all major retailers within a hour or so of each other. The items were not listed when I checked and by the time I checked again they were there but sold out

I was at work when they sold out here in Canada, I ended up preordering it off of Amazon Japan since they’re still available and it’s in English, with priority shipping it was 180$ CAD with the double amiibo pack, not going to give my money to scalpers and i cancel if we get more here.

I disagree. People need to retain the right to sell their own property. What we need is something like PlayStation Direct and what Microsoft is starting to do but on a larger scale. These companies need retailers and don't have the capacity to sell to everyone though. So what this really calls for is for retailers to come together to figure out a system for tracking purchases to a verified buyer and having that system cross reference purchases to other retailers.

Then we need Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, AMD, NVidia or any other company dealing with scalping to endorse this system to their retail partners.

Scalpers will always win in the case of stock shortages, it's a business for them.

They have the money to spend on as much stock as the store will allow them to purchase.

Nintendo supports them by making stock scarce, it's free publicity

For sure! I mean it's been such a long time since a proper Metroid game was made that is both cannon and gets the AAA / main platform treatment it deserves. I think a lot of gamers probably don't know what to expect and already find the price increase of the experience a bit risky.

What should happen for high ticket items in the future is they should be sold on the companies website and based on the customers online account and years in it. When those people are fulfilled it can be released to the rest of the public and the scalpers won't make any money as the average consumer won't pay those scalped prices.

Wouldn’t be a problem if Nintendo didn’t make such a small amount. I tried like hell to get this yesterday and no matter what I did I couldn’t. Now, it’s gone and a ton are up in eBay. Nintendo doesn’t care because a sale is a sale but since scalping is a multimillion dollar business now this is going to be the norm.

Every video game company needs to do what Iron Maiden does to prevent scalpers from grabbing their tickets. Any company can take efforts to make sure fans are the primary purchasers of their content, they just don't care. Nintendo products get inflated in price more often than other products I've seen and any business (especially one that caters to kids) should put the efforts into making sure fans are the ones who are buying these. Unfortunately you have to convince all major retailers to follow suit as well.....

How hard is it for retailers to keep these limited quantity collector's items to in-store purchases only. Seriously? What is the harm in doing that? People want to resell it for $200? They better know where to go and get there early. In any case, they'll probably only be able to pre-order 1, maybe 2 of them.

Never even has a shot at these. Checked all the stores after the reveal and nothing but the regular, 20 min later and a page refresh and they were there but sold out, went that way for most of the stores I checked. few hours after that the eBay listings started popping up like crazy

This is 100% Nintendo's fault. They know every special edtion of anything Nintendo will be sold, period. The dumb asses who were in charge of how many to produce fucked up as usual. It's pretty simple, for example, if they wanted to make say 2 million just double that, to 4mil, or 6mil, 8mil, you get the idea. In this way everyone would be able to buy it. There might be more on the shelves but they will be sold without a doubt.

I didn't get one before they sold out. Not that worried though. Buying a game is a lot easier than a system. There will be plenty of regular and special editions for sale later. Please don't buy from one of these a hole scalpers.

There are a lot of people that like the more classic/nostalgic game styles, and thats what this is. Its a more retro feel and callback to the original Metroid games. With updated graphics and newer gameplay of course.

It may not be for everyone, and if they were TRYING to make a game that was on par with the current generation's graphics and style then yes, this would be a failure. But they weren't. This is exactly what they werr going for, and its something a lot of people like. And I'm also willing to bet that most fans woukd be irritated if this were the only Metroid offering in the works. Bit everyone knows Metroid Prime 4 is in the works, and thats what everyone is really excited for.
