I'm not a fan of the Mario or Yoshi sidescrollers, but I prefer 2D Metroid to 3D in most cases (im a fan of Prime 2). I would say metroid is a solid 50/50 between people who prefer 2D vs 3D.
For old fans of Metroid, this is amazing news. Bigger than Metroid Prime 4. We all thought the mainline Metroid series was dead. Metroid Dread itself was confirmed to have had been in development before silently dying.
Looks like they're taking the SA-X Pursuer aspect of Metroid Fusion and making it a significant part of Metroid Dread.
Even for a 2D side scroller it seemed unimpressive. Cuphead, Guacamelee, and Xbox’s new pixelated game Replaced look way better than this. But of course it’ll get a free pass because it’s Nintendo we’re talking here.
At least they acknowledged Prime 4 is still being developed. And I’m really happy that we’re finally getting a sequel after “Fusion”. I remembered it was originally supposed to come out on the Nintendo DS.
Nice touch using the Dread title. I remember it being referenced in one of the Prime games but it never came to be until now. Day 1 for me. Glad the rumor was true.
Thanks, but I had my fill with Metroid Melee Counter: Samus Returns. Metroid Prime 4 looks to be a cross-gen game with the next Nintendo handheld if it ever does get released since right now it is just vaporware.
That was underwhelming graphically... looked like some run of the mill side-scrolling shooter designed to cater also to the lowest common denominator (smartphones), like that Megaman reskin by Keiji Inafune Mighty No. 9 that got rightfully panned by critics a couple years ago, or barely better... I'll take Mesen's Metroid HD, AM2R, or Super Metroid any day over that.
Finally a Nintendo exclusive that I would definitely play! I loved Metroid on the SNES & this reminds me of the SNES version but with updated graphics. If only there were more Nintendo exclusives I were interested in I would invest in a Switch but I can't do it for just one title.
I have only ever played the 3D Metroid games. I very much enjoyed the prime trilogy. Nonetheless, I am excited for Metroid Dread. The art and designs look amazing so far.
If anybody is impressed by this, then they haven't played a single game of the same type on Steam. I have seen a ton of games by indie devs that look as good if not better than this. The only difference is that Nintendo will price it ridiculously high.
You aren't wrong. This is $60. I don't really understand how they keep pricing things so high. I guess because people pay it, but the economics should really mean this game retails for $40 max. Like what a top-tier 3DS game used to cost. I was really hoping that's what the 3DS devs getting rolled into Switch production meant - smaller scale games with high quality, but at a lower price. It has ultimately just meant 3DS games that were $30-40 now cost $60 instead.
This game looks good, but truth be told Nintendo needs; to just release the Switch Pro at this point. The fact that the new Marvel Guardians Of The Galaxy game, is cloud based show's; the weakness of the Switch.
For a game 10 years in the making this is really disappointing for a 2D side scroller. Indie devs have made huge strides in this genre with impressive visuals, details and game play. This looks like it was made in 10 days and honestly looks disgustingly lazy. Very disappointed.
I understand that, but the cancelation of the game during those two periods does not negate the fact that the ideas for a new 2D metroid were not there and doesn't warrant a long development time. It counts and so for a game with ideas kicked around for ten years shouldn't have resulted in this travesty. Especially when Sakamoto said the other systems lacked the power to display his vision of a new metroid.
I was completely hyped for this game for this until I saw the asking price is £50.
With all the other top tier metroidvania on the market that launched between £20-30 such as both Ori games, Hollow Knight, Bloodstained, Shadow Complex etc etc I'm struggling to see how they can justify this price point, Especially with its cheap takcky looking graphic style.
Kind of gutted it's not Prime 4 but it's something
I really want Prime as I'm sick of side scrollers from Nintendo.
I’m absolutely adore 2D side scrolling Metroid games!! Super Metroid is “the” greatest game ever created.
At least they acknowledged Prime 4 is still being developed. And I’m really happy that we’re finally getting a sequel after “Fusion”. I remembered it was originally supposed to come out on the Nintendo DS.
I cant wait for this!
Day 1 for sure!
