Syphon Filter 3, God of War 2, Last of Us were all exclusives, not hampered by a previous generation. TLOU on PS4 was a remaster before you bring that up.

The only true comparisons here are MLB and LBP3, a sports game where it makes more sense to be on as many platforms as possible and a sequel to a series that was off-loaded to a 3rd party studio. In other words, nobody really cares too much if those games are held back technically.

There's no "bait and switch" here. You got the exact system that was advertised. It's the games that were downgraded to fit the PS4 line. If these games had another year or two before releasing, they wouldn't bother with the PS4 because by then there would be enough PS5s out there to justify the console exclusivity. FF7 RE: Intergrade and Part 2 for example are PS5 only games. Hopefully they'll use UE5 for Part 2, something only a PS5 could handle. Horizons third sequel would probably take us to the skies and we'll be able to have battles in air, ground and sea without loading. The third GOW will probably have us fighting through multi-realm boss battles, etc. It's just these coming sequels will have to be toned down to accommodate the PS4.

That's not the point. The point is that the PS5 GoW is essentially chained to the ankle of its lowest common denominator now, which is the base model PS4. A GoW specifically designed for ONLY the PS5 would look and play beyond what a cross gen GoW could ever be able to pull off. The real question is what happens to the next Naughty Dog game and for example, the next Spider-Man....if those games are also crossgen, I would consider that to be problematic, because it would mean Sony is no longer innovating, but hedging their bets and limiting what is possible on ps5 in order to capitalize on a large ps4 player base. When has that ever been acceptable? It shouldn't be. At that point we would be talking about 2023/2024 games being made to perform on a 2013 jaguar cpu? No....that doesn't work. Mark Cerny himself has stated quite clearly that the many features of the ps5, including the ssd, will allow the console to move game design forward in a way that just is not possible on a ps4, where assets have to be duplicated and stored all over the hard drive just so they can load more easily.....which means any games designed for ps4 are limited from the very start. It's not about "looking good". It's about being able to be played differently. Take the new Ratchet and Clank game for example. I bet the PS4 can run it with frame rate and resolution sacrifices but the gameplay will be sacrificed the most. It'd be a completely different experience.

I guarantee that when GoW and Horizon releases, the games will be excellent but there will be sequences in which we'll all go, "Well this would definitely not be happening if it was a PS5 only game" and I'm talking about still having to squeeze through wall gaps, long, round about ways to get to your destination for extra loading time, and all the other silly techniques. And it's not like they can just get rid of these for the PS5 version without screwing up the timing of things.

Imagine FF7 Remake being cross-gen and instead of having an amazing UE5 (speculating) experience with wide open worlds, we're still squeezing through wall gaps and ducking under debris for all that extra juicy loading times....On a PS5 that doesn't even need it. It's not the graphics we're worried about, it's the gameplay, it's the experience we're worried about.

I don't have a PS5 yet fyi but if I did, I'd be pissed that I just shelled out $500 for a new console hoping to experience the flagship games at their absolute greatest potential and now I find it, I could have just saved myself the money and played it on a PS4 Pro instead because the experience will be nearly identical. It's not the same as supporting old hardware because people who have the PS4 like myself have a huge library of PS4 games to choose from. The author seems confused and contradicts herself multiple times throughout the article. Obviously these games will run and look best on PS5. Everybody understands that. The issue isn't with performance or visual fidelity, but with fundamental game design limitations being dictated by 2013 console hardware.

The only time she comes close to the essence of the issue, she make a u-turn because she doesn't want to "sound like a massive wanker". Then she somehow ends up claiming that Breath of the Wild being a great game "puts the argument that such games are held back by being cross-gen releases to bed". We know that great games exist on the PS4. That's completely beside the point.

The claim that you simply can't buy a PS5 is also an exaggeration. I've tried for months, I know how hard it is to get one online if you refuse to pay scalpers, but in the end I got one from a local retailer. ~9 million other people managed to get one as well. By the time God of War comes this number will be much larger and even if you don't manage to get it in time, the game will still be available when you get your PS5.

An issue the author didn't address at all is that these games were announced as PS5 exclusives and many people simply have a problem with the dishonest messaging. She might think that games can simply switch target platforms mid development, but with the possible exception of GT7 that's almost certainly not what happened. GT7 is build on the basis of GT6 and as far as I know aims for 120fps. It's also a closed circuit racer so it's probably easy enough to scale it down to work on PS4.

The other games however would've utilized the PS5's unique hardware advantages from the beginning. To port these games to PS4 mid development would potentially invalidate core gameplay mechanics and the world/level design structure that would've been built up to that point.

Sure. I think there are 3 main areas:

1: World / Level Design
Problem: Current games are very limited in how levels / worlds have to be designed to function without interruption of loading screens. If you pay attention to many modern games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, you'll notice that you have larger areas where you can freely move seperated by corridors which function as a loading zone. The larger areas are limited by the amount of data that fits into memory and the length of the corridor (or other ways to slow the player down) are determined by the bandwidth of the HDD. Some linear games also like to block you from going back once you're reached a trigger point to safely unload data from RAM without risking the player turning back.

Solution: The I/O bandwidth of the PS5 will give developers complete freedom to design the world / levels how how they want them to be played. This will lead to better level design and more control over the pacing of the moment to moment gameplay.

2. Dynamic/ Alive Worlds
Problem: One of the biggest issues of many games nowadays is that the worlds and levels often feel stagnant and lack variety. The streets and cities are seemingly populated by a jarring amount of NPC clones all doing the same handful of activities. The issue here is that the memory pool of last gen consoles was the limiting factor in asset variety and density.

Solution: Since the SSD can fill the memory pool in a matter of seconds, game developers can unload assets much more aggressively. You're memory pool now determines what's in view and your immediate surroundings instead of a large portion of the map. Expect the unexpected, because the variety is now only limited by the file size of games and the workhours necessary to create the assets.

3. Movement speed and transportation
Problem: Similar to the other two issues, not being able to fill the RAM fast enough created a limit to your movement speed relaive to the amount of unique assets you expect to see. Closed circuit racing games worked well enough, because the asset duplication issue wasn't a big deal for the desired race track look, but open world games in particular had a big issue with letting the player move around at high speeds. Besides limiting the movement speed devs used a lot of clever tricks like obstructing the view/path of the player by scyscrapers or mountains. Another famous example is the lack of flying mounts in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Solution: With the SSD you can have comparable asset quality, density and variety in linear games and open world games, while moving freely or even flying over the map. With more granular LOD management through modern engines like UE5, pop in will be mostly eliminated.

They aren't minor things at all. A PS4 version lacking key game mechanics would never fly. When designing a game, you're balancing the player experience around everything you put in the game. This is why it's always emphasized to cut features as early as possible if you're gonna cut them at all. If you cut them late, not only have you wasted a lot of resources on them, but you've already created so many dependencies that the ripple effect will leave you with a broken and unbalanced mess.

On top of that, you have devs working on fundamentally different versions of the engine. Having just in time asset streaming would require a complete rework of the I/O system. That in turn makes designing levels or an open world an entirely different process since your PS4 and PS5 profiles run into entirely different bottlenecks.

By the time you realize that you have 2 seperate teams working on different toolsets and creating fundamentally different games you've defeated the purpose of making a cross-gen game in the first place. The budget of such a project would be closer to the budget for two games than it is to the budget of a single project.

And that's why a cross-gen project would never be as ambitious as a next-gen only project. But even if such a project would be attempted, the bad optics of having such a heavily cut down last gen version would probably create a huge backlash.

How about because developer after developer will tell you they build a game for the high end and then scale it back for lesser systems? So it doesn't hold anything back. Eventually game engines won't work on older systems and the cost of optimizing for the lesser, plus fewer people on older specs, means it's not wirth brining it. Cross Gen at new system launch doesn't hold anything back.

I see many of you jump on the wagon so early thinking this is all they have for 2021 and 2022.
It's E3 period Sony will show more games be it cross gen to piss some of you off or next gen only stuff that people in other sites forums love to downplay so much.
It's good that they give PS4 its continued long support like its predecessors enjoyed but some want their latest hotness all too early we're not in the PS2 era anymore where they can pump games out in a year.
Right now all you can do is bitch away thinking of what it could have been.

I have not seen anything next gen in any next gen console yet. Not even upcoming games. Guess studio costs are reducing the appetite for risks associated with the high investment requirements for new truly next gen games. Don't tell me about Ratchet and Clank on PS5 when the Unreal Engine 5 demo looks they way it does (that's next gen).

The sooner you people accept that we won't see TRULY next gen games until 2022 the better. It's really not a big deal that Sony makes cross gen games. It really only matters to those Sony fanboys who like to brag about exclusives which they really can't do anymore without someone saying" yeah but it's on PS4 too". Did Sony lie about generations? Yes, are they smart for doing so? Yes, does it matter in the end as a gamer? Not at all...

I agree it's a good thing, if only for the fact plenty of people like me won't be having a PS5 anytime soon, considering it's expensive, hard to find, and doesn't have the attractivity of the PS4 install base for publishers. The only people who demand only PS5/XBox Series X exclusives and right now are the people who caved in and bought those systems as soon as they released when there were no reasons to, because they're dumb consumers who always just need to have the latest smartphone or whatever latest little gizmo because of the "newness effect".
