Days Gone review | PC Gamer

Zombies and the art of motorcycle maintenance.

ARESWARLORD1466d ago

Feel that score is definitely low

Babadook71466d ago

78 on Metacritic. No bad. It's reviewing better than it did on PS4 overall which it should as the frame rates are no longer an issue.

TheLigX1466d ago

Not a fun game at all. Accurate score.

Sutminhani1466d ago

Great game, 9/10 imo😊 not a accurate score.

MadLad1466d ago

Not an accurate score because you like it? He had issues with it. He gave it the score he found to reflect that.

Babadook71466d ago (Edited 1466d ago )

@TedCruz

Ahh. You realize that both of the above commenters gave an opinion which they then infer as fact right? How is it you then criticize the mirrored response only? Are YOU disagreeing with one opinion then?

lonewolf101466d ago

6.5-7 is about right, just to much Ubi formula game loop for my liking.

1466d ago
1nsomniac1466d ago

Someone definitely hasn’t played the game. It doesn’t share any of the Ubi traits.

WillyC0091466d ago

Yeah....you didn’t play the game. It has no Ubisoft game loop formula lol. If you’re gonna troll, get better at it.

lonewolf101466d ago

@Below, it is quite similar to Ubi, not 100% the same, either way it gets repetitive, got the day one special edition with art book and steel case, so try harder. I got to the 2nd chapter/part where flying enemies came into play, that is where I stopped, happy I own and have played it now?

coolbeans1461d ago

I know I'm late to the party here, but I'm not sure why the Ubisoft comparison netted you such ire. Like, it's literally one of the easiest descriptions one can make about its design ethos.

lonewolf101461d ago

@coolbeans

Maybe if I had put ubi in quotes it may of read better, but yeah a lot of ire and found less accusations.

It needs crysis in the name. otherwise it's fail.

Motorbikes need petrol and need fixing when shit happens which it does. Sounds like they never spent that much time with it.

It's not a perfect game by any stretch, but it's not a 6.

BenRC011465d ago

It is if your a bitter pc gamer that has to wait years for ports while playing early access ps3 era garbage at 240fps.

kthxcrayon1466d ago

"Look, just play Avalanche's Mad Max game from 2015 instead. It does everything Days Gone does, but with a sense of humour, a wasteland that's actually worth exploring, and you get to be the road warrior Max Rockatansky instead of a sad, mumbling biker in a backwards baseball cap."

Lol in the final summary he cleared up all my issues with this game. Looks like I'll be playing Mad Max XD

Tacoboto1466d ago

They hit the nail on the head with my biggest issues on the game - Deacon is a grumpy, bitter biker, with a bike that has the worst fuel efficiency of any motorcycle ever made. Maybe the world would've been more fun exploring, if it didn't come with the built-in task of scavenging for gas everywhere. Maybe freakers would've been more exciting, if we had a decent amount of ammo to handle a small horde much earlier in the game. Maybe the story would've been better, if our character wasn't so angry and jaded toward everyone that he needed help from.

what malarkey is this? did you accidentally eat crayons growing up? if so i apologise for the following.

giveyerheadawobble1466d ago (Edited 1466d ago )

If you contrast this game to something like TLoU2, and then compare the reviews and the scores, there is definitely something skewed and rotten going on within mainstream gaming media for sure. Now, I know, I know. That sounds like one of those crackpot conspiracy theorist rants, but it is genuinely baffling to me to see odd complaints about this game, when something like the same game Ubisoft and Activision pump out every 6 months, littered with the same grindy, microtransaction-infested, cliche-riddled, copy and paste formula, and they recieve beaming reviews. Whereas a game that is admittedly cliche to a fault, and an amalgamation of most open worlds like this gets panned for taking all of those formulaic open world ingredients and making them...fun? I was expecting Days Gone to be exactly all of the mundane, boring nonsense of all the above, but what I found was a game that grew, constantly evolved in an interesting way, and stuck to what it knew what to be doing and did them right. The bike mechanic is something I'd love to see more of, even in games like GTA. Having to be aware of fuel makes you think of what you're doing and makes you care about the condition of your bike.

I actually found that the more I played this game, the more it improved and the more I kept wanting to get back to it. That is the hallmark of a good game in all of my experience of playing video games, so to see these ridiculous nitpicks of something that is nothing but a straight up entertaining zombie apocalypse action shooter. A fun game, and trying nothing more to be a fun game, when shit like TLoU is making ridiculous political statements with hacked to bits writing and characters and gender politics gets praised to the high nines like its something revolutionary, is a joke.

Days Gone is a video game. First and foremost. The game was in service of its story, and not the opposite, and that is the major difference. Great game.

Atticus_finch1466d ago

Nope. That's just in your head.
I like Days gone but I wouldn't recommend it apart from the horde killing. The game is a chore to finish with unfinished mechanics, stupid story and lame character development. The biggest problem DG suffered from was the lack of clear direction. The game is a mismatch of different ideas that didn't workout well together at the end. Apart from that the atmosphere, the shooting, the hordes, the sound design and graphics are outstanding. Very few games look as good as DG.
No need to bring TLoU2 into this.

BenRC011465d ago

Guessing you bought at release. I played a year after and it was great, most issues were patched out.

Atticus_finch1465d ago

I did play during launch and I never had any major bugs. I don't dislike DG but I also acknowledge that it isn't up to Sony studios standards. Especially when it come to story.

spicelicka1466d ago

"A fun game, and trying nothing more to be a fun game, when shit like TLoU is making ridiculous political statements with hacked to bits writing and characters and gender politics gets praised to the high nines like its something revolutionary, is a joke."

You are shoving your biased perspective and not being objective at all. A fun game trying nothing more than to be a fun game does not simply deserve a 10/10 just because. I read this so many times whenever someone has an issue with a review or score they don't agree with, "well I'm having fun with it so 10/10". Sorry but if that's all it's trying to be then it's setting low standards for itself and meeting them doesn't necessarily deserve a high score because games are judged on the standards set by other games.

You have to assess a game on many objective criteria, you can't remove all objectivity but you can minimize it. These criteria can include fun, story, character development, gameplay, graphics, sound design, bugs, repetitiveness, ambition, technical achievement, price, etc. etc. If you didn't like TLOU because of "political statements with hacked to bits writing and characters and gender politics" then you are clearly ignoring a dozen other things it does brilliantly. First of all that has nothing to do with gameplay. Second of all political statements and gender politics had nothing to do with the quality of its story, which is what it was praised for and was considered revolutionary. The story about grim revenge, empathy, showing emotional depth and perspectives of two rival characters in an immersive cinematic manner, showing the horror of that world because of creatures and other humans both, these are the things that made TLOU revolutionary in terms of storytelling. Notice how none of these i said would change in quality if the gender politics wasn't involved. You are narrowly isolating an aspect of it that you didn't like and ignoring the fact that it's not what made the game great.

giveyerheadawobble1466d ago

Showing my bias? How dare I?

Yeah, a fun game being fun. Imagine that in this day and age. No political bollocks shoved down your throat. Just a game being a game. For FUN! Amazing, isn't it? I mean, Mr Druckman was actively telling people that his game wasn't supposed to be fun, when blowing people into itty biddy bits was the funniest part of his game. Crazy, I know. But don;t you dare have fun, playing something that was supposed to be fun, and try to concentrate on the politics!

Fuck me, what has this industry and "the gamers TM." descended in to?

DoomsdayMayBeOkay1466d ago (Edited 1466d ago )

I would strongly agree with your comment if it wasn't for your stupid TLOU2 remarks, please remove stick of your ass

gold_drake1465d ago

im having a hard time defending the game actually. i played it myself and besides the hordes... i did not enjoy it all that much. but i did play it when it had all those issues at launch which was probably not the best time to play it.

that being said, alot of people like it, which is fair enough, i like games not alot of people like too, but this constant "its bad cause i didnt like it" or the "NO its good cause i like it" .. i mean.. come on.

at this point, if the game gets these low scores, even with all the gameplay issues resolved, something has to be wrong with it, right?

i dunno. its opinions in the end.
like it, play it. dont like it, stay away from it.

spicelicka1465d ago

"Yeah, a fun game being fun. Imagine that in this day and age. No political bollocks shoved down your throat. Just a game being a game. For FUN! Amazing, isn't it?"

Lol nothing you're saying makes sense. You keep repeating crap about politics when that has nothing to do with gameplay and 'fun'. I literally explained it in a long paragraph and you ignored every bit of it. Let me make it simple, if all you care about is FUN then great enjoy what you want to enjoy, why are you so bothered by the score? Using just FUN as a criteria is so vague and subjective there is no argument to be had. Any game anyone enjoys is FUN, you can't just go around handing out 10/10 scores to every game based on such shallow criteria.

As far as TLOU2 goes let me say it again, gender/other politics has NOTHING to do with FUN because FUN is all about gameplay. Does playing as a woman or lesbian or communist or banker or pescatarian somehow lessen how much fun shooting zombies feels like? Or platforming or stealth or customizing weapons or anything gameplay related? It doesn't even affect the story, you can have the exact same story and change the character backgrounds and genders. If it somehow affects how much fun you're having then that's a YOU problem. Fun is about gameplay yet you keep talking about everything but gameplay. By your own logic you're completely contradicting yourself.

The Days Gone Remaster Is an Unsurprising Cash-Grab and Nothing More

Honestly, who is the Days Gone remaster for? Fans of the original won't find anything new here.

Christopher9d ago

I don't know why you're being downvoted. It is a new thing in the remaster. Perhaps it's not worth the $10 upgrade if you've played. But, I mean, if you never played the game, then just wait for it to go on sale, forget about it, and continue not playing it like you did for the last 6 years?

TheEroica8d ago

The downvotes are likely from the excuses... Horde mode doesn't obsolve Sony from cash grabbing its easily duped fanbase.

S2Killinit8d ago

I love how people call this a money grab while the real money grabbing is in other genres. But, I think people who are that dumb deserve to be fed with skins and micro-transactions, and don’t get to complain that single player games of this caliber are few and far in between.

IAMRealHooman8d ago

@TheEroica
they changed the header. it was originally the " Remaster has nothing new" or something similar.

Days gone is amazing regardless and for those that didn’t play the original I highly recommend.

SimpleSlave9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Yes. All of Sony's Remasters - all the ones stemming from the PS4 library - are cash-grabs. When all they needed to do was patch them to run at 60fps, up the resolution, and be done with it. But then they had to actually care about Bloodborne, and that's a cardinal sin over at Sony.

On a side note. I just got The Sinking City Remastered for free, because I owned the game. Weird...

anast9d ago

The Bloodborne thing is a real issue.

SimpleSlave9d ago

I'm sure they banish people to the Nightmare Frontier if they as much as whisper the name in the office.

Bebedora9d ago

Cash-grab or not. As long the Bend Studio gets their share, I am for it. I don't know, but I still hope for making of a second title. However, in a way It's a cash-grab. They still put something extra to it (horde mode), that is.

anast9d ago

lol Yeah they seem to hate the idea of a new Bloodborne anything.

I've still got to play the shrinking city. I enjoy Lovecraftian stuff.

RaidenBlack9d ago

Hope the recent remasters like Sinking City and Oblivion, ups the ante and alters the industry's approach.
But what fans really want is just a straight up sequel ... oh and add sequel to 1886 as well.

GhostScholar9d ago

I would love a days gone sequel. Days gone to me is such a better game than the last of us. The world in days gone was so great.

mkis0079d ago (Edited 9d ago )

To me they appeal to different players outside of just being zombie games. I like them both, but days gone is more fun to me. The last of us 2 is my murder game though along with red dead 2 and gta 5. Love the realistic violence.

jznrpg8d ago

I’m a big fan of Days Gone but TLOU is a better made game. How much you enjoyed each game is of course up to you.

neutralgamer19929d ago

With the recent cancellation of Bend Studio’s live-service project, there’s now a real and exciting opportunity for the studio to revisit Days Gone 2. This might be the perfect time for Sony to greenlight the sequel—especially with the PS6 likely on the horizon—because Days Gone already has a strong foundation, a passionate fanbase, and significant untapped potential.

It’s worth remembering that Days Gone was Bend Studio’s first major AAA title developed for a home console. Before that, the studio had primarily worked on portable systems like the PSP and PS Vita, or acted as a support studio. That leap to a full-scale open-world console game was ambitious, and although the game launched in a somewhat rough state, that context is crucial to understanding its initial reception.

Gaming critics were often harsh in their reviews, frequently comparing Days Gone to other PlayStation exclusives that came from more seasoned console studios like Naughty Dog or Santa Monica Studio. Despite these comparisons and the early technical issues, Days Gone still went on to sell over 7.6 million copies—a remarkable achievement for a new IP. Even more importantly, Bend Studio listened to fan feedback and steadily improved the game through patches, updates, and optimizations. Today, Days Gone stands as a much more polished and enjoyable experience than it was at launch.

That kind of growth shows Bend Studio’s resilience and potential. A sequel would not only benefit from their hard-earned experience, but also avoid many of the pitfalls that affected the original’s development. Much of the foundational tech, gameplay systems, and world-building has already been done, meaning the studio can focus more on innovation and storytelling rather than reinventing the wheel.

Compared to the high-risk, long-development timeline of a new IP—which could take 5+ years just to get through pre-production—returning to Days Gone is both a smarter and more efficient route. If Sony and Bend Studio commit to Days Gone 2 now, there’s a strong possibility it could be a key PS6 launch title—offering a fan-driven, proven IP with greater polish, depth, and scope.

Let’s not forget Bend Studio’s deep legacy either. This is the same team that brought us Syphon Filter, a series that helped define early PlayStation experiences. With the right support and direction, they can absolutely deliver a worthy sequel that lives up to the franchise’s potential and the studio’s legacy

Days Gone PS5 Is a 'Really Good Piece of Work', Say Tech Experts

Sammy writes: "Back when Days Gone Remastered was announced, many fans were squinting to see the differences between the excellent original PS4 version and its PS5 re-release.

But now with the game readily available – and our 8/10 review declaring it the “definitive version of a fan favourite” – we’re beginning to get some meaningful tech analysis.

And according to Digital Foundry, this is not just the bare-bones resolution upscale some had anticipated – “a lot of effort has gone into it”, according to the tech experts. "

First game sell well enough to warrant a sequel? Our received well enough?

Alos8823d ago

It sold well but reviewed only okay, which apparently wasn't enough for Sony.

Cacabunga23d ago

Sold well and received even better.. had a bad first month due to technical issues but ended up being one of the best games from last gen

Knightofelemia23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

That's the nature of the beast. If a game like a movie does not meet certain numbers then they write off the franchise. EA scrapped DS2 because the DS1 remake did not meet certain numbers. I was hoping the remaster of DG and the fact it also came to PC would convince Sony to green light a DG sequel.

PanicMechanic23d ago

Critic reviews were appalling. The worst reviewed game I’ve ever seen. By that I mean, poor quality journalism, dishonest writing and review scores which are out of touch with fan reception.

It’s $10 and there are plenty of games out there for you.

Of course you wouldn't, nobody would. If you have never experienced the other, then you don't have the reference needed for comparison.

Sony getting ready to milk some more people on dumb products.... I can see the psvr1 and 2 owner salivating over days gone remaster. Lol. What a ruse song is pulling.

Knushwood Butt27d ago

How can Sony milk customers if it's such a 'dumb product'? If it's so dumb, nobody will buy it, and there's no milking.
Plus, there's nothing preventing people from getting a copy of the PS4 version.

Babadook727d ago

As a PSVR2 owner. Yup. If there’s a VR version I would be there day one.

Greg280127d ago

There are plenty of people who never had a chance to play this game, now they can with the remaster.

Don't understand why people who already played the game complain about a remaster. No one is forcing you to buy it. There are plenty of new games to play

MoonConquistador13d ago

And then there's a group of people who did play the game, thought it was awesome and would be happy giving it another play through.

Unfortunately I'm one who only got it on the PS5 instant game collection so no path for a 10 quid upgrade for me.

Days gone is 85+. It got heavily marked down at launch for bugs where as others get a free pass for that. It's a fantastic game.

MoonConquistador13d ago

One of my favourites actually, I thought it was fantastic from beginning to end.

Kosic27d ago

And it's not even a big overhaul remaster. It's list turning up the graphic level by one. It's quite embarrassing, as the original wasn't that bad. And the remaster isn't that noticeable

REDGUM28d ago

I so hope this game or DLC for those of us who own the original sells well.
Ive said it before, its an underrated game for sure & was unfairly judged upon release.
Please try this game if you haven't already.

For those who say 'i won't purchase digital only' you can pickup a hard copy for 5 bucks here in Australia, then add the DLC and you have a superb game for $20 or so.

Give it a shot, tell me I'm wrong After completing the game.

Game on gamers.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH28d ago

It was full of bugs at release I wouldn’t call that being unfairly judged. If you want your game to score well then release it in a completed state. Now with that being said I think the game was pretty good.

Knushwood Butt28d ago

It really wasn't.
The worst I encountered was a horde spawning on top of me when exploring a cave.
Did you even play this at launch?

S2Killinit27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

It wasnt full of buggs, it was very playable. That was the excuse for the hit job at launch before people started to speak up about how great the game was.
