The Megami Tensei gaming franchise got its start back in 1992 when Japanese publisher Atlus released the first game for the SNES, and later the PC Engine Super CD-ROM, and the Sega CD device. It was later re-released on the PlayStation and the Game Boy Advance. The game has since spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, including the popular Persona games, the fourth of which was released this week on PlayStation 2.
Set in a post-apocalyptic late-20th century Tokyo, the Megami Tensei (or "Megaten") games tell of military destruction with the aid of "demons." Unlike those in many stories, the term "demon" in this franchise does not simply refer to a malevolent force, but instead to any folklore creature, representing anything from Judeo-Christian Angels to Pixies, and even Norse figures such as Loki.
