Six months on, Xbox Series X is a great console in need of games to showcase its power

The Xbox Series X launch window was defined by a lack of platform showcases, availability issues, and smart quality-of-life improvements

Lol been saying this from the very first day of its release, and reason why at this moment the purchase of this console is not worth it, if Im not mistaken a next gen console is to play some next games isn't?, but yet again this is just my opinion.

Neonridr1504d ago

I mean in all fairness, the PS5 isn't exactly flush with next gen games either. I know you love your precious Sony, but be honest here. The majority of their library is cross-gen games too.

I've only purchased Miles Morales and RE8 myself.

S2Killinit1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

They are pumping them out and already have a nice head start in exclusives. So i have to disagree. Its not like you need 50 exclusives all at once. Its time to acknowledge that the PS5 is shaping up great just like all the previous Playstations before it. Right this moment they have at least two new heavy hitting exclusives, and the list will continue to grow.

jukins1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

Miles is crossgen.... howd you get majority?

Father__Merrin1504d ago

Sony is releasing the games and I can assure you they will keep coming. I bet you was from that crowd that said ps3 has no games...

darthv721504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

@ju... Miles, sackboy and Horizon are the known first party cross gen games, with more likely to be announced due to the shortage of PS5 systems into next year. That could mean Sony may want to recoup some of the costs of games by making them cross gen to spur sales to those who do not yet have the PS5.

3rd party ones are much more prevalent and will continue to be well into next year as well.

northpaws1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

@Neonridr, I don't see any fairness in that statement.

It doesn't matter if a game is cross gen or not, it is the fact that people who bought a PS5 actually get to experience some highly rated Sony exclusive since launch...

Astro's Playroo
Sackboy Adventure
Demon's Souls
Miles Morales
Returnal

And full next gen AAA Ratchet and Clank in a month. The games have been steady and fun.

(And this is ignoring lower rated games like Destruction Allstars already)

When is Halo Infinite releasing?

Profchaos1504d ago

Yeah I'm a ps5 owner myseysbd I spend 90% of my gaming time playing PS4 games.

Have to admit I only own Spider-Man mm / remastered, borderlands 3, watch dogs legion (which sucked) and thps 1+2 (goty for me despite putting 100 off hours into the PS4 edition).

There has been some nice PS plus games though control was awesome and man eater was an unexpected fun game.

Some of the games I expected to play to play on it have suffered delays unfortunately like far cry 6

But it was the same last gen for a good year there wasn't a lot releasing and I had a PS4 a month after launch. About the two year mark however and i had no where near enough time to play everything.

Futureshark1504d ago

Sorry but how did an article about the lack of Xbox games turn into a justification of Sony PS5 exclusives.

Ratchet & Clank is out next month, still nothing on Xbox by then either btw.

Neonridr1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

@jukins - I simply said those were the 2 PS5 titles I have purchases since I got my PS5 Day 1. I wasn't implying it was exclusive, RE8 isn't next gen only.

Majority means that >50% of the PS5 library is also playable on the PS4. I used a simple math term.

@Futureshark - not sure if that was for me or not. I was simply replying to the OP who said that they are no next-gen experiences on the system. Aren't games like RE8 considered next-gen? I get there aren't a ton of exclusives, but let's not pretend there aren't a ton of games to play on either system. One just happens to have more, that's all.

Army_of_Darkness1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

@neonridr "I mean in all fairness, the PS5 isn't exactly flush with next gen games either "

In what world is that comment fair to the ps5 and the unaware folks out there When it has released demon souls remake, astro bot and Returnal so far as next gen exclusives, plus ratchet and clank coming next month, followed by more exclusives throughout this year, while the series x/s has released absolutely Nothing next gen as of yet and probably for the rest of this year?! Psssh...

Godmars2901504d ago

But the PS5 has had games from day one that showed its potential. The pack in bot title.

Sony has provided many examples of what their systems can do over the years. By contrast, through they started off promisingly, MS has only shown a "exclusives don't matter" and may as well have said games. Just about every showcase title they've hyped, from Alan Wake to Crackdown 3 to Halo Infinite, has become cause for embarrassment.

Paleblood1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

Totally disagree with you. Masterfox made a real argument and you just reflected it to Sony. PS5 has amazing next Gen games already who are being praised critically and also have an agenda of announced games coming soon while on Xbox there is non. People does not even know what all those studios that MS bought are doing.

Neonridr1504d ago

@Paleblood - that's ok that you disagree with me, we are human and are meant to differ. I disagreed with Masterfox's opinion, hence why I replied. I'm not expecting anyone to agree with my opinion, because it's just that. I don't feel that the PS5 is chock full of next gen titles either. It's got more, yes. But it's also got plenty of cross-gen titles (that the Series X has as well). I too want to play next gen games on my PS5, but my options right now are limited.

BehindTheRows1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

"In all fairness" - Right. You are always about the "but Sony/PlayStation" nonsense.

OT: One of the hesitations I have with buying a Series X. Any, and every, game I could buy on it, I have a far more powerful PC to play said games on.

No two ways about it — the system needs something to showcase what's capable of.

Melankolis1504d ago

Statistically, it's not that bad, that's already 2:1 software attachment in only 6 months for you. You'll have next 5 or 6 years after that.

DJStotty1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

@S2Killinit

"They are pumping them out and already have a nice head start in exclusives."

Lol, they will always be ahead with exclusives, how can people not understand, that all xbox 1st party going forward will be available on PC?

Xbox does not have exclusives anymore (sure you can call it a console exclusive if you like) but all this comparison with "exclusives" is redundant.

Next-gen games? Now that is something we can compare.

Michiel19891503d ago

tbh both consoles dont really seem worth purchasing to me at this moment. I feel even Sony's lineup is pretty weak. a remake, spiderman 1.5 and returnal now. Great games in their own right, but thats not what I was expecting 6 months into next gen, especially not from Sony.

1503d ago
Rude-ro1503d ago

Yeah but Sony does not have that 10+ year gap of not making any new AAA games like Microsoft.
Microsoft just started slapping AAA prices on indie style games like crackdown, sea of thieves, etc to make gamepass look like a deal.

leejohnson2221503d ago

Hardy the same, how many 1st party games are on ps5 compared to series x? Quick resume isnt on all titles and its not bc it does emulation on certain games. You cant put any disc in and it works. What attraction does the series have? I mean gamers surely want fresh new games from 1st party studios

KingofBandits1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

Like or dislike for these titles PS5 has: Demon Souls, Judgement Remaster, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, FF7 R Intergrade, and Odd World Soul Storm. all with the exception of Judgement are exclusive games and while Odd world is cross gen in this same time frame Microsoft have not even put out a exclusive gross gen title. The Series only has The Medium to my knowledge. I'm not saying that I have a ton of PS5 games either but I still have more then actual exclusives for my Series X. Again this all goes back to how hard Microsoft pinned their launch window and beyond hopes on Halo Infinite. They knew the release calendar was slim but counted on the brand recognition to keep driving new sales past launch. Problem is that the console has been selling well but those of us who have it are starting to notice the lack of game releases that really show us what the investment is getting us.

Sunny_D1503d ago

Having 4 next gen exclusives within just the first 6 months of release is still better than a console with 0 next gen exclusives. The PS3 had Resistance FOM at launch and that didn't stop people from calling it a system with no games at the beginning. Silly how people are conveniently okay with it for the Xbox now.... I mean of course it's a "different" time but it really isn't.

What next gen games are on PS5? Returnal is about all I can think of. Both consoles are suffering so don't pretend PS5 is doing well with exclusives at the moment. Right now BOTH consoles are pretty much BC machines with beautiful load times that's about it.

sinspirit1504d ago

Nope, they're not suffering at all. They release a big exclusive every couple months as always while multiplatform titles buffer in between. Just like every gen before it. It did release with some great games, actually one of the best launch title lineups we've ever had and the included Astrobot. Quit lumping PS5 in with SX problems like we don't know the tactic. Not the same.

RazzerRedux1504d ago

lol.....you gotta make it about PS5, don't you? Ok.....fine. Returnal and Demon Souls are the current next gen games. Soon Ratchet and Clank will be joining them. But Spider-Man: Miles Morales does quite well filling the gap as a cross gen. And that's coming off TLOU 2 and Ghost of Tsushina a year ago.

Sony has released more last gen, cross gen, and next gen AAA games than Microsoft since their last AAA Xbox game in Gears 5. Hell, Gears 5 is the only AAA game Microsoft has brought to Xbox since it released in 2019. And you want to try to group them in with Sony? That's hilarious. Bullshit, but hilarious.

enkiduxiv1504d ago

These exclusive titles will all be available by the time Starfield theoretically releases:
Demons Souls
Returnal
Ratchet and Clank
Stray
Little Devil Inside
Kena Bridge of Spirits
Horizon Forbidden West

I will leave the smaller titles out of the discussion for now since I am sure both consoles will collect a healthy list of exclusive indies in time. I am trying to give a conservative estimate of what their respective lineups will look like going into the first holiday season in which they should both be widely available (at least I hope so). let's assume Microsoft releases both Halo and Starfield in November of this year. Xbox will have Scorn, The Medium, Halo, and Starfield. That would still give Sony a 2:1 ratio over Microsoft. Let's also not forget the very real argument that gamers who also own PCs can just get the handful of Xbox titles on their PCs.

TheTony3161504d ago

Demon Souls, Returnal and Ratchet in 4 weeks. That's 3 next gen exclusives in 7 months.

Chevalier1504d ago

What? So by June that's 7 months we got Astrobot, Demon Souls, Returnal and Ratchet and Clank. All Only on PS5. Also in under a year. 3 exclusives in under a year for Xbox would be impressive, but, since it's Playstation, there's 'nothing' or 'not much to play. Uhh okay there.

If Xbox had 3 to 4 exclusives within a short period like Playstation you guys would be screaming at the top of your lungs how great Xbox is doing with 'exclusives'.

So hypothetically if Halo, Forza and say Ori came out within 6 months would you Xbox fans have the same tune? No doubtful. It'd be a successful year as far as you guys are concerned. But yeah Demon Souls, Returnal, Astrobot, Ratchet and Clank then add cross gen 1st party exclusives like Spiderman and Sackboy Adventures its almost a title every month on average is NOT good enough? What a f'n joke. If Xbox had released the same amount of games that would beat their best years output.

1503d ago
leejohnson2221503d ago

Series doesnt do.bc its emulation and not every old game, same as quick resume isnt on every game

KingofBandits1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

At launch Demon Souls was exclusive, 4 months later Sony put out Oddworld (yes cross gen but still platform exclusive) a month later Returnal, next month Sony has Ratchet and Clank, FF7R:I, and Neptunia ReVerse. Thats 6 exclusive games in 6 months, are they all killer apps....maybe not to some but its still better then 1 which is all Microsoft has at the moment. Look I love my XSX but MS has a dev cycle problem and as much as they may be the "good guy of gaming" right now because of Backwards Compat, it does little to change the fact that their business practices over the gens have shut and closed some of their most talented acquisitions. Bet they wish they had Bizarre Creations, Beep Industries, Bungie, Artoon (not theirs but they left them to wither) making content right about now. Their long term acquisitions are mostly hollow logo shells of themselves now......Rare, Lion Head Studios have not put out a solid game in years.

I didn’t have an xbox one, it’s the opposite for me I’m flush with games between purchases and Gamepass.
I had a ps4 and there’s nothing on ps5 I want.
Different strokes.

gamer78041504d ago

Medium is fantastic, IMO the storytelling is much better than any resident evil game. Probably my favorite game this new gen.

DJStotty1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

@Masterfox

"if Im not mistaken a next gen console is to play some next games isn't?"

It is one of the reasons yes, but i can guarantee you, every owner of a PS5, or a Series S|X, is still playing last-gen or cross-gen games. I do not see why you would buy a Series and then sit there waiting for a next-gen game, or buy a PS5, and play the 2-3 next-gen games released so far.

Bennibop1503d ago

Haven't played a single PS4 game on my PS5 yet.

DJStotty1502d ago (Edited 1502d ago )

So no miles morales?

So you have not played any cross-gen games at all?

So what have you been playing the last 5 months?

Astro and Demon's souls?

1503d ago
dcbronco1503d ago

Yes, cause PlayStation had a ton of games. It had a remake(read:old game)a add on and tech demo. With Bethesda Xbox will have games. With Microsoft's willingness to spend money some of them will be free Sony games that PlayStation fans will pay $70 for. PlayStation fans whined about the Bethesda acquisition. Keep going on about Xbox having no games. Its why you won't be getting any Bethesda games. Microsoft has a 140 billion dollars sitting in a room. What else are you going to talk yourselves out of getting?

PS-Gamer-19861503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

That "old" game magically looks and plays better than anything sx has to offer, sorry.

dcbronco1502d ago

And yet it's a old game most of you have already played. So if that actually counts for something so do all of upgraded games on S and X that cost....free.

InUrFoxHole1503d ago

Definitely worth the purchase. Been using it since day 1. Now I'll agree there is no must have banger right now. This is the exact reason my ps5 is collecting dust. Gamepass ultimate and resident evil are worth it.

Nineball21121503d ago

It depends. I was lucky enough to grab one. I haven't had an xbox before, so the prior titles will keep me plenty busy until some new games come out. Plus, I can still play the multi-plat games that come out, so I'm a happy camper.

CYALTR1503d ago

I am 100% an Xbox guy and I can find nothing wrong with what you are saying. At this point it just isn't worth it. Now as a rule, I always wait at least a year before upgrading, as usually in the first year developers really haven't figured out the new system yet and there are still many cross gen titles to choose from.

For me, personally, the same would apply to the PS5, though I think you can make a MUCH more effective argument about jumping in on that new system. Just my opinion.

I can appreciate what the Series offers in regards to making older games feel new. And the amount of modern titles that have received optimizations, to scratch the surface of what the Series line is capable of, has been impressive. I can't help think of what games will be like once they are no longer tethered to the previous systems. Sadly, we won't know for about another year or so.

S2Killinit1504d ago

I think they will continue to be tethered to the lowest common denominator of the new generation with the series S. Not saying they wont have great games but the decision to release a lower sku definitely came with costs.

SolidBoss8161504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

I can’t wait for new next gen only exclusives games to start coming out because I think that the series x is going to be a beast. It’s going to be a long wait for those games to start pumping out but I have no doubt that they won’t disappoint.

1504d ago
HannibalLecter1504d ago

No doubts????
Where have you been the last 7-10 years. I mean they are still having you hurry up and wait with promises of the future.

Destiny10801504d ago

gears 6 will probably be the first next-gen title, for xbox

jukins1504d ago

And they just announced a switch to ue5 and also said it will be awhile before any news comes out

1504d ago
Zhipp1504d ago

The Medium is already out.

Though if that doesn't count, my guess is that the first major next gen showcase will be BFVI. DICE have proven themselves to be second to none when it comes to visuals and performance.

S2Killinit1504d ago

I dont think you can claim that a console is “great” without great games. A console is defined by what it has in terms of games.

RosweeSon1504d ago

Yeah that’s the problem it seems
They like to just talk up the hardware which I’m sure is super fast if your playing games from
The last 10-15 years 😑🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤣 my mini SNES is a great console is runs the games so fast no slow down 😑 oh yea it’s SNES games
🥴🤷🏻‍♂ ️🤣 let’s see how great and excellent it is once it’s put through it it’s paces with something new and next gen

Wikkid6661504d ago

So you can't have a great car... without a great driver?

S2Killinit1504d ago

Sure you can but you cant have a great car if it doesn’t run.

Notellin1504d ago

He doesn't really have anything at all to say. And when you break it down it's even worse.

staticall1503d ago

@Wikkid666
Isn't this analogy completely wrong? I mean, in terms of cars, driver is the one who controls (drives) the car. In terms of console, wouldn't it be the one who controls (plays) it?

KingofBandits1503d ago

Whats the point of having a great car if you don't drive it?

frostypants1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

It's more like having a brand new super speedway bit no high performance cars to drive on it. No one will recognize it as a great track until someone can actually race on it.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 1503d ago
Zhipp1504d ago

It's a great console because it has fantastic hardware that plays existing titles much better than its predecessors alongside massive QoL improvement thanks to the SSD. "Next gen" exclusives are no longer the be all end all of next gen systems. They're much more in line with PCs. These consoles at launch support more games than anyone has time to play -- and that's before even talking about new releases!

If you're playing virtually any game right now on an Xbox One, you are getting a vastly inferior experience to what you could be getting. I'm running into a similar dilemma with my PS4 library. There are still titles I want to play, but I feel like I'll be doing a disservice to myself playing them now instead of waiting till I get my hands on a PS5.

DaveZero1503d ago (Edited 1503d ago )

A console could also be defined by many things, one being how well it does without exclusives and the Xbox holds up well. The playstation needs it's exclusives because its fanboys would soon switch consoles if it hadn't got any because MS has always had the better online world.

InUrFoxHole1503d ago

That makes no sense. That's like saying the last of us isn't a great game. The ps4 made it a great game.

lukejd10881503d ago

I got a PS4 after reading all about Sony’s massive amount of exclusives. Then I played a lot of them and ended up back on my Xbox playing halo, gears, and Forza games. Impressed by the number of Sony games, not impressed by the gameplay.

I appreciate this way of doing business. I may even buy Lies of P now because of it. Where your money goes it's literally the only leverage we have as consumers to make a difference in an industry we all have an opinion about. Withholding it or spending it in the right places is about all we can do.

This is fire. Just like the game. I haven't gotten the dlc yet, but im really thinking about it. I just thought it ended great, I really want to see what they do with Dorothy. Will you fight the Tinman, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, the Wicked Witch and Wizard of Oz? Maybe Toto's with us, that'd be fire.

For the moment there, I thought Lies of P will be ported to Switch 2. XD Anyway, congratulations to Round8 and the whole development team.

Didn’t care for the game but love the company being good to the employees.
