PS Vita PlayStation Store Reportedly Set To Stop Releasing New Games Despite Staying Open

From PSU: "Sony will no longer accept new PlayStation Vita game releases on the PlayStation Store from this summer, despite the store itself continuing to remain open.

That’s at least according to Twitter account Sometimes You, a publisher of single-player Unity, Ren’Py and Defold games to consoles, including PS Vita. The store will continue to operate as planned, but new releases will no longer be available following the summer deadline."

XiNatsuDragnel1082d ago

C'mon Sony Don't crunch these developers just let em release naturally.

ApocalypseShadow1082d ago (Edited 1082d ago )

These developers could have naturally moved their game development forward to PS4, Switch and Xbox. And not release on hardware DISCONTINUED in 2019.

It's like getting upset that your classes didn't start at ITT after not checking the school closer and the door locks.

Petebloodyonion1081d ago (Edited 1081d ago )

And perhaps theses dev did a market research to evaluate that they would have a better shot at selling their game on a console that would have 1 new game with some happy follower vs on another one that release 1000 games per year.

Or perhaps they started developing the game way before 2019.

Last I check Ubisoft did released some Wii games in late 2019 despite the system been discontinued since forever.

And perhaps Sony warn them I’m advance that they will stop selling new game ans not just 3 months in advance.

King_Noctis1081d ago (Edited 1081d ago )

“And not release on hardware DISCONTINUED in 2019.”

The hardware was discontinued, but the store itself was not. When the store was supposed to close, Sony didn’t inform the developers months or even weeks in advance (and even sold PS Vita development kits to some devs, knowing full well that they are going to close the store).

You can’t really blame the devs for this. Some indies devs can’t afford to release games on just 2 or 3 platforms, they need all the customers they can get from every platforms available.

gamer78041080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

Let’s be honest Sony discontinued its support a year after it launched... kept on life support by third parties. Haven’t been burned like that in a long time on a gaming machine.

MetroidFREAK211081d ago

The system was discontinued years ago. Time to move on

Knightofelemia1081d ago

If the little machine is still getting new games why castrate that source of revenue

Teflon021081d ago

Thought they stopped. A dev like late 2019 said they weren't releasing the PS Vita version of their game localized because of this reason. Just couldn't remember who

ARESWARLORD1081d ago

It's dirty that Sony would do this knowing football this games and development for the Vita.

That is some dirty moves Sony.

And as someone stated above it's been discontinued since 19.

But Sony's had no issues publishing the games released between then and now and slipping the cool cool profits into their pockets.

And Sony never give the PS Vita the shot it deserved after abandoned it within a year or two of its release

gold_drake1081d ago

my god, the sheer ignorance of some people. the complaining about a dead handheld not having new games. geez. no one plays on the vita anymore, amd if devs are dumb enough to release games for it still, how is that sonys fault

MrSwankSinatra1080d ago

you clearly don't know shit about the vita community as there are plenty of new games that trickle out to the vita to this day and all those devs attest that they still make a lot of money on the platform.

gamer78041080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

It didn’t have any first party games after 2013, that’s the part people should be upset about. Sony left it to die. But be thankful third party kept it alive this long.

Gamer751080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

"How is that Sonys fault" well they did keep sending out dev kits and
didn't inform the devs as to what was going to happen so how is that not on Sony yet somehow its the sole fault of the devs, geez some people can never hold Sony accountable for anything

jukins1080d ago

Sony stopped selling vita dev kits in 2016. Again if you take 4 years to release small indie game, again, ON A DEAD UNSUPPORTED platform whos really to blame?

MadLad1080d ago

Just because Sony didn't want to support it, doesn't mean that other developers haven't been.
It may be a small market, but there are devs obviously finding success on the platform, and find it financially viable to release on it.

ApocalypseShadow1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

It's a dead platform. Any expectation that it was going to continue and thrive is wishful thinking on these developers.

The Switch is a thriving platform that could benefit from their release and there's a community looking for new games. It's on them to know the signs. Especially when the parent company says the hardware is discontinued. And, Sony said last year that the digital stores would be affected.

https://www.google.com/amp/...

The writing was on the wall. Vita was discontinued in 2019. Sony then says that games will no longer be coming last year. Then, this year they say it's closing but the media played it up like Sony was taking the ability to download your previously purchased content which was debunked. Gamers raged over nothing. Sony puts out a statement that they'll keep it open but we all know those older systems are no longer supported and shouldn't be expected to be in perpetuity.

These developers knew. They just acted like they didn't know when evidence clearly can be shown that Sony was headed in that direction to move on. How is it that I can go back and find information from 2019 and 2020 but the developer's couldn't or should be asking these questions 2 years ago to Sony on if they can release their game before it closes.

MadLad1080d ago

@apocalypse

You're allowed to view things however you wish.
I'm for giving devs the option, and I doubt hosting the Vita store, and letting them submit new titles to it, costs this multinational an arm and a leg to do so.
These small devs, evidently, still make a profit off of bringing their titles to Vita, considering they invest the time, and manpower, to do so.
Sony screwed consumers over by basically killing the platform after just a couple years.

Feel free to defend them in screwing over not only customers who thought they were buying into a proper, well backed platform, but also the consumer who still chose to support it, as well as the developers trying to keep it alive.

jukins1080d ago

Lmao who has found success? Please tell me these vita games. So weird for you guys to defend something you dont have, dont use, and you yourself didnt support, but now yall are all in "stick it to the man" mode.

Its like buying a 300,000 mile car that hasnt had any maintaince and expecting it to last until you need it...but obviously it would be the car salesman that the buyer made the decision right?

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens5214d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens5213d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK212113d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

MrNinosan13d ago

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens5213d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens5213d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Barlos14d ago

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani13d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum14d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman14d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim14d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I disagree Batman
