Increasing its investment in first-party studios is Sony's first clear response to the Zenimax acquisition, significantly doubling down on its own IP and its first-party exclusives.
Sounds like a great plan. Sony already have some of the most talented developers in the industry. Keep investing and growing them. Possibly make a few acquisitions such as Housemarqe and Bluepoint.
Sony is going to be Sony. To keep it real speaking from an Xbox gamer, Sony will never be as bad as some of this journalist or fanboys say they are going to be. They have been dominating the console scene for along time and I don’t see them falling out soon. They will do what they do best and come out with games that I will get jealous about. The only thing different about this gen is that MS finally woke up from their slumber and decided to produce some heavy hitters themselves. It’s going to be a good gen if you own both console or a PC and PS5 combo.
i hope its true. sony needs xbox so that they dont become complacent.
Kayoss People keep saying that but the only competition Xbox provided last gen was a massive PR push. And it was arguably Sonys best gen yet.
@Atticus_finch That is true - last gen was amazing for Sony. However, because of their success, they're attempting to push boundaries, like increasing the price of their first party games. A lack of competition allows a company to raise their prices without fear. So in that regard, competition is a friend to every consumer.
Toxic They weren't even the first to post higher prices. You people love exaggerating. Game price rises come every so often then they drop and raise etc. PS2 games started as 80-100 depending on the game here in Canada. They dropped down to 60 within a few years after N64 and SNES titles were like on average 80-over 100.That's before tax. It's 90 here in canada when the PS4 gen started at 60 and ended with 80 and it wasn't sony's stuff that raised in price here first. They were actually last to get price increases. The average person will just pay the new price if the games are good. If other devs are pricing games at $70 USD there's no reason MS and Sony shouldn't as the platform holders. Nothings stopping CoD or NBA from selling for those prices and the crazy thing about sports games is they're mostly the same game every year (yes first game for the gen is a decent upgrade but thats it)
This generation is gonna be awesome. Sony already has it´s established IPs and studios. Xbox Series consoles are already doing better on sales than Xbox One in the same time frame even with a pandemic going on, mass consoles shortages and zero first party next gen game released. I´m glad that Phil Spencer has turned things around for Xbox and this time both Nintendo and Sony will face real competition. No TV and Sports crap. No DRM. No always online. No Kinect. No weak more expensive console. This time Xbox will be all about the games! Exciting times ahead.
Also no games? Man what would be Phil spencer, without nadella and Microsoft's money in the back? The baddest xbox leader till now.
This makes it sound like Xbox got dealt a bad hand when the problem is they employed a bad strategy. "No TV and Sports crap." TV and sports crap doesn't have to be a problem. It's fine as a appetizer. It's a problem when it's the main dish. That's a strategy problem. They should have bet on games. "No DRM. No always online." DRM and always online were gone before the system launched. Xbox was more competitive at the start of the generation than the end. The gap continued to grow in PS4's favor. That's not on prelaunch policies that were scrapped before the system launched. "No Kinect. No weak more expensive console." Granted, Kinect initially being bundled impacted power, but Xbox was only more expensive than PS4 in the beginning, and the less powerful Switch is a huge success. Also, the more powerful One X failed to move the needle. It, too, lacked any launch exclusives. None of that stuff had to be a fatal blow, had Xbox committed to their games output. If exciting times are ahead for Xbox, they will come from a change in attitude, not because Xbox got dealt a better hand.
@lion... We know the Series passed the XBO by week 12 and has kept on widening its lead. You say differently but do you have proof? Now when the One X/S was released (3 years later) it had an uptick in sales but we don't know if there will be a revised Series X/S in the next few years. It is a possibility, as that is usually the plan but we just have to wait and see.
@GaboonViper Hilarious and comical Gamepass and the cloud is always online
"This time Xbox will be all about the games!" Where are the games? Xbox fans told me MS was gearing up for the Series X launch and that Sony wouldn't be able to compete.
I also remember hearing xbox fans talking aboutbthe playstation 5 wasn't ready because.......wait for it..... they didn't show the physical console....... maybe those xbox guys should of been more concerned with not having any launch games. Please tell me who wasn't ready again. Clowns
Oh what a surprise!. Say something good about Xbox and all the sad pathetic Sony fanboys downvote. Really. N4G is pathetic. You're not welcome here unless you constantly have your tongue rammed up sony's arse.
@Napoca7 "Also no games?" No need to rush anything. There´s plenty of games in development right now way more than the competition has and you know that. But hey, feel free to play that game if you want. :) "Man what would be Phil spencer, without nadella and Microsoft's money in the back? The baddest xbox leader till now." MS always had big pockets. Money was never an issue. The real fact is: Thanks to Nadella and his trust in Phil Spencer´s ability to lead Xbox, Phil has tons of blank signed checks to do anything he wants! And that´s more that you, me or anyone we known will be able to achieve in this life.
@RauLeCreuset "TV and sports crap doesn't have to be a problem. It's fine as a appetizer. It's a problem when it's the main dish. That's a strategy problem. They should have bet on games." Exactly. "DRM and always online were gone before the system launched. Xbox was more competitive at the start of the generation than the end. The gap continued to grow in PS4's favor. That's not on prelaunch policies that were scrapped before the system launched." The damage was already done. Stupid remarks from Mattrick like: "If you don´t have internet, we have the Xbox 360 for you." just made things even worst and all Sony had to do was Shu and Adam´s viral video to kill any PR stunt attempt from MS to turn things around for Xbox in that mom ent. "Also, the more powerful One X failed to move the needle. It, too, lacked any launch exclusives." Which was never a promise. The X was just a middle gen upgrade. Nothing more, nothing less. Just like the Pro. By the time the X got released MS only had 6 first party studios. Now they have 23. Big difference that competition will feel this gen. "None of that stuff had to be a fatal blow, had Xbox committed to their games output. If exciting times are ahead for Xbox, they will come from a change in attitude, not because Xbox got dealt a better hand." If exciting times are ahead for Xbox is because they´re fruits of Phil Spencer´s vision for Xbox. Period. @darklion "Actually according to sales tracking Series is not outperforming Xbox One." Yeah? And where´s your source? https://www.vgchartz.com/ar...
Sony plans to entertain gamers. MS plans to beat Sony You see the problem here?
Why are we acting like Sony isn't the industry leader?
Or hasn't been for a long while.
highest revenue of any gaming company and one of the highest profits, PS accounts for loads of money for all those f2p game like fortnite and warzone, release acclaimed games every year. Yes, PS is here to stay
@elazz sony has been here to stay since 1994
Cuz these so called "journalists" need their hits.
Because we were around in 2005-2006 and we remember what can happy when Sony gets complacent while their competition gets hungry. That situation doesn't look to be repeating itself, but we are aware that the winds can change.
"That situation doesn't look to be repeating itself, but we are aware that the winds can change." The situation has really been more consistent than you're giving it credit for by dredging up 2005 - 2006. People like to point to Xbox's closest loss as an example of how easily they can win. The PS2 had record setting dominance that has yet to be replicated. It is the zenith for PS market share in the over two decades they've been in the market across 5 home consoles. The mega giant MS managed to close the gap the next gen, assisted by a year head start, RROD rebuys, a cheaper price, and some of Playstation's most revered exclusives going multiplat. Good on them. As they should. They still lost. That was their zenith. A losing effort. The PS4 came and ate into that. So much so that Xbox is moving toward a "console agnostic" strategy, to borrow a term from the article. The winds have been blowing consistently in one direction, if maybe not as strongly in the PS3 years.
Being the industry leader doesn't mean you don't have to compete with others. Don't compete and you won't be the leader for long.
No one is acting like that. Some gamers are getting insecure because they see the competition making big moves and they feel like sony should be doing the same.
The interesting business dynamic from my perspective - Sony will be killing it for the next few years while MS is positioning their new properties. All MS will have to combat this is pushing the value envelope and give stuff away (i.e.GamePass). How much $ MS is willing to sink into this, and how effective that is at maintaining their market share by the time their IPs are ready is important. If MS lets their market share shrink by a lot, it will be more impactful to make their new games exclusive, further dipping into profit, and there will be more pressure to release those games on PS. There's going to be a lot of money spent over the next few years to win hearts and minds imo
Yep I think ms knows they can't compete with the quality of games ps is pumping out so is throwing money at it now. They've very deep pockets so be interesting to see how long they keep this strategy up....at the end of the day though if ps keeps pumping out the best games it won't matter how much money ms throws away
I think there's a theoretical scenario where they could put Sony out of business with enough money. It would take a lot but it's hard to combat free handouts
If it ain't broke dont fix it.
if it aint broke, dont fix it. But do improve on it.
True, but if you call yourself improving on "greatness" too much you can inadvertently ruin what you were trying to preserve in the first place.
The way Sony are going, we will have between 6-8 too first party exclusives per year! And I certainly hope that happens x
Each has their own strategy, Sony has their own winning formula, whilst Microsoft is trying to develop theirs… console sales all come down to which company is the most appealing to that particular customer, I don’t really see it as a head to head competition .
MS is not competing with Sony, so why would Sony do major plans around MS's decisions? There are some minor counter attacks, PR has to have some influence in some of the decisions [to maintain strong public opinion], it is business afterall. but these decisions are not really something i would call competing. Without heavy Hitters like the early 360 days, ms is just fooling around [with their PR] to get more money from you. If you like their PR, if you like low grade game pass quality games, go ahead and remain satisfied, we will be here enjoying next gen exclusives that take advantage of the PS5 hardware from sony. We don't need plans against this version of ms.
@Saaleh "We don't need plans against this version of ms." Lol.
When nothing is going on at Microsoft headquarters to write about, make something up.
You mean, xbox's plan to compete with Sony. Let's not forget Xbox never beat Sony in any generation. The 360 Gen they actually lost while coming out a year earlier with more paid exclusives and a cheaper price while also having tons of RROD's. I have friends that bought 4 or 5 360's due to RROD. basically all my friends bought more than one 360 that I know. My fat ps3 and slim ps3 both still work right now.
I disagree. Though not as big as rrod, which I went through 2 Xboxs. I also went through two PS3 in a two week period( yellow death). I do have both today. Also, your point that MS had never beat Sony, yet during that generation, games sold more, played better ( certain titles), and better graphics for most of that generation( especially third parties). They also had a more feature rich interface. Heck you couldn't even cross talk on the PS3. So looking at it as just the pure numbers of how much sold is to broad to make such a claim.
But during those years Xbox boasted about numbers on the regular because they were ahead for most of the Gen. Into the ps4 they stopped almost immediately. So that means to Xbox at the time, numbers mattered. Now they boast about gamepass subs and downloads and hours spent picking flowers, etc. It'd called moving the goalposts. To me ps3 had better games, and free online. That's why you should want a game console.
So I was replying to your first statement which was focused the PS3/Xbox360 era. Not on some of the bad decisions they (MS) would make later. You have stated that MS had NEVER Beaten Sony and again I challenge that notion. If your just going by the number of total Consoles sold, then you would be right, because they ultimately did surpass the 360. But during Xbox 360 era, MS regularly beat them in software units sold (where the real money is) and in units sold. The PS3 didn't make a profit until 2010. Ms despite the Red Rings turned a profit much, much earlier.....around 2007. Sony also supported the PS3 for much longer after the generation ended than MS did which effect those numbers. According to Sony President at the time 360 sales wouldn't be in the same ballpark as the PS3. That the 360 would be short blip on the PS3 radar. Regardless of how many units Sony sold(Which they lost alot more money on each unit sold then MS did) in the end. The very fact that 360 led (made a much earlier profit) for most of that generation to the Market leader of the previous two generation was a huge feat. Sony had dethroned Nintendo and Sega (Heck put Sega in the grave). plus the Xbox brand introduced so many features that are standards to this day. Sony had to play catch-up, they weren't winning that era, they were surviving that era. So Xbox 360 beat them in alot of areas in that era and that says a heck of alot more than just one measurement of success ........I'm glad Sony went through all of that because it lasered focused them and led to the Dominating PS4 era with all its excellent games. Just like the song says, "Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger" https://www.gamesradar.com/... https://www.cinemablend.com... https://www.pcworld.com/art...
The ps3 sold more software worldwide and had a higher attach ratio, not sure where your getting your numbers from, npd perhaps? https://vgsales.fandom.com/... As for losing more money per unit.....no, rrod saw to that being unrealistic. Sony discontinued the ps3 a year after the 360, the 360 was out for a year more in the US an a year and a half in Europe, so they were on the market about the same amount of time, which is also where the 360s lead came from, launch aligned the ps3 was always ahead, this is all easy to find out, not sure why your making stuff up 🤷♂️
They must be pulling US numbers as MS only every showed off how well they sold in the US because it was the only spot it beat PS in and every month they were celebrating saying "we were the number 1 console for 10 months straight" confusing people into believing they were actually beating Sony when they were being outsold all year around outside Christmas which MS always did amazing at with that gen
@IRetrouk, What I found interesting about your article was this paragraph. Another example: Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360 version has sold 3,362,196 units as of April 2009 in the U.S., compared to 1,959,798 units for PlayStation 3. However, because X360 has a higher install base, GTAIV only has a 23% attach rate compared to 26.9% for the PS3 SKU (i.e., 26.9% of PS3 owners and 23% of X360 owners purchased the title). In brief, a console has a tie ratio while a game (or accessory) has an attach rate. Plus as they admitted this doesn't take into account the loss of profits occured by the cost of making the console. PS3 was way more expensive to produce, hence it cut deeper into profits. Sony playstation wasn't profitable until 2010 . MS 360 was profitable in 2007, even with red rings. Thats roughly 3 years prior to the ps3. So the whole point of my responses was to refute Darkborns claim that MS had never beaten Sony. That's simply not true and over simplified.
Just stop lol, I gave you worldwide numbers, and worldwide the ps3 sold more games and had a higher attach rate than the 360 did, thats just the facts🤷♂️ Also the 360 became profitable in 2008 and the ps3 in 2009, a years difference for a years headstart no?, 360 didn't win anything, and I don't really know why you are tryna give it a win, this is all easy to search up🤷♂️ That's not to say the 360 wasn't successful though, it was ms best console so far, by far.
@IRetrouk That's what happens when you indulge someone who moves the goalposts. They'll just move the goalposts again when you beat them at their game. Kudos for pointing out (some of) the holes in rlow's argument for those who may otherwise not have known, but don't expect a concession from someone who began their argument by moving the goalposts.
@RauLeCreuset I know, cant help myself sometimes🤦♂️🤣 I was going to refute every single claim but returnal keeps making me play🤣, aint got time for that at mo😉
Well PS3 definitely outsold the 360 in my Suburb of Marrickville in Sydney. How rlow can you go.
First party games wise, Microsoft will never be able to compete.
Flight Sim plus Halo with a Elder Scrolls kicker demands it.
Flight sim & halo just made me laugh, but yes Elder Scrolls, Fallout Avowed and Fable have huge potential moving forward.
I hear you nobody cares about flight sim but it should already be out on Xbox. It is the most impressive piece of software I’ve ever seen but M$ wants to milk it on PC first. If they can port it ever it’s the game that’s going to make me buy Xbox
Fable 3 was so garbage I dont think it’s a big deal going forward. Maybe they a make great Fable finally but I doubt it highly . 2 was definitely the best one but had so many bugs it was frustrating as hell and was broken on one of my Xboxs it wouldn’t even play after deleting my entire hard drive and reinstalling without the patch (that was supposed fix i tried other fixes but it wouldn’t run in it at all) . 3 was the most boring game ever I bought 2 copies and my son and I quit less than half way through because it was so lame . How can you make a co-op game so boring ? We would have played it if it was a little fun because I was spending time with my son , it was so bad we sold them . I never sell games . 1 was a game that had potential but mostly broken promises from Peter Molyneux and didn’t even get close to what it suppose to be . It’s funny Peter Molyneuxs Fable still is wanted as it has been a mediocre series overall and never lived up to the what the first game was supposed to be . Elder Scrolls yeah that has potential , Fallout sure , Avowed maybe but Fable is a low tier series and was just hyped up and over promised by Peter Molyneux like most of his games . Go back and play the games , they were never that good .
If it ain’t broke...
Then invest in Bend studios and make the damn sequel to Days Gone!
...just don't make it co op 😔
The team wanted to, they had it all planned out in the first one but the system couldn't handle it and the development time wouldn't allow them. The game would have been crazy fun with a friend playing hordes trying to kill them together. If the PS5 can handle thousands rather than hundreds.
Bends next game will be much better that DG. You can bookmark this comment.
I had high hopes for the Series X and Microsoft about two years ago when they announced all those nes studio acquisitions and developments but they have just continuously failed to make anything that makes me say,” I need this game,” much less care about it. Sony has simply continued to create game experiences and worlds with far more depth and fun.
More like Xbox's plan to compete with Sony (the Champ is who you chase, not the other way around). :) What ever Sony is doing (which is what they've done in the console space since 1994) is clearly working and yes, they shall stay the course.
Xbox needs to compete with Sony, as Sony is leading again. Only knock against Sony right now is those damn $70 games while XSX remain $60.
Microsoft hasn’t even released any first party games on XSX so you don’t know what they’ll charge yet
Because resident evil village is $70 on ps5 and $60 on xbone/xsx.
" Because resident evil village is $70 on ps5 and $60 on xbone/xsx" https://www.amazon.com/Resi... You're an idiot. It's $59.99 on PS5. The $69.99 versions is the deluxe versions. https://www.amazon.com/Resi... Get your FACTS straight before making those claims. Now you just sound like an idiot. Took a whole 5 seconds to prove your wrong.
You’re the reason we have $70 games. You justify wrong doing.
YOU said Resident Evil was $70 on Playstation and $60 on Xbox which was wrong. Calling an idiot and idiot when they're wrong. Seriously learn to read. Not justifying anything except how you are lying. Get your FACTS straight
Sony will be fine what they are doing, another trash artical.
