Sony's plan to compete with Xbox: Stay the course

Increasing its investment in first-party studios is Sony's first clear response to the Zenimax acquisition, significantly doubling down on its own IP and its first-party exclusives.

Sounds like a great plan. Sony already have some of the most talented developers in the industry. Keep investing and growing them. Possibly make a few acquisitions such as Housemarqe and Bluepoint.

This generation is gonna be awesome. Sony already has it´s established IPs and studios.

Xbox Series consoles are already doing better on sales than Xbox One in the same time frame even with a pandemic going on, mass consoles shortages and zero first party next gen game released.

I´m glad that Phil Spencer has turned things around for Xbox and this time both Nintendo and Sony will face real competition.

No TV and Sports crap. No DRM. No always online. No Kinect. No weak more expensive console.

This time Xbox will be all about the games!

Exciting times ahead.

Napoca7143d ago

Also no games? Man what would be Phil spencer, without nadella and Microsoft's money in the back? The baddest xbox leader till now.

RauLeCreuset143d ago

This makes it sound like Xbox got dealt a bad hand when the problem is they employed a bad strategy.

"No TV and Sports crap."

TV and sports crap doesn't have to be a problem. It's fine as a appetizer. It's a problem when it's the main dish. That's a strategy problem. They should have bet on games.

"No DRM. No always online."

DRM and always online were gone before the system launched. Xbox was more competitive at the start of the generation than the end. The gap continued to grow in PS4's favor. That's not on prelaunch policies that were scrapped before the system launched.

"No Kinect. No weak more expensive console."

Granted, Kinect initially being bundled impacted power, but Xbox was only more expensive than PS4 in the beginning, and the less powerful Switch is a huge success. Also, the more powerful One X failed to move the needle. It, too, lacked any launch exclusives.

None of that stuff had to be a fatal blow, had Xbox committed to their games output. If exciting times are ahead for Xbox, they will come from a change in attitude, not because Xbox got dealt a better hand.

@lion... We know the Series passed the XBO by week 12 and has kept on widening its lead. You say differently but do you have proof? Now when the One X/S was released (3 years later) it had an uptick in sales but we don't know if there will be a revised Series X/S in the next few years. It is a possibility, as that is usually the plan but we just have to wait and see.

@GaboonViper

Hilarious and comical

Gamepass and the cloud is always online

TheTony316143d ago

"This time Xbox will be all about the games!"

Where are the games? Xbox fans told me MS was gearing up for the Series X launch and that Sony wouldn't be able to compete.

The Wood143d ago

I also remember hearing xbox fans talking aboutbthe playstation 5 wasn't ready because.......wait for it..... they didn't show the physical console....... maybe those xbox guys should of been more concerned with not having any launch games. Please tell me who wasn't ready again. Clowns

Malacath143d ago

Oh what a surprise!. Say something good about Xbox and all the sad pathetic Sony fanboys downvote.

Really. N4G is pathetic. You're not welcome here unless you constantly have your tongue rammed up sony's arse.

Obscure_Observer143d ago

@Napoca7

"Also no games?"

No need to rush anything. There´s plenty of games in development right now way more than the competition has and you know that. But hey, feel free to play that game if you want. :)

"Man what would be Phil spencer, without nadella and Microsoft's money in the back? The baddest xbox leader till now."

MS always had big pockets. Money was never an issue. The real fact is: Thanks to Nadella and his trust in Phil Spencer´s ability to lead Xbox, Phil has tons of blank signed checks to do anything he wants! And that´s more that you, me or anyone we known will be able to achieve in this life.

Obscure_Observer143d ago (Edited 143d ago )

@RauLeCreuset

"TV and sports crap doesn't have to be a problem. It's fine as a appetizer. It's a problem when it's the main dish. That's a strategy problem. They should have bet on games."

Exactly.

"DRM and always online were gone before the system launched. Xbox was more competitive at the start of the generation than the end. The gap continued to grow in PS4's favor. That's not on prelaunch policies that were scrapped before the system launched."

The damage was already done. Stupid remarks from Mattrick like: "If you don´t have internet, we have the Xbox 360 for you." just made things even worst and all Sony had to do was Shu and Adam´s viral video to kill any PR stunt attempt from MS to turn things around for Xbox in that mom ent.

"Also, the more powerful One X failed to move the needle. It, too, lacked any launch exclusives."

Which was never a promise. The X was just a middle gen upgrade. Nothing more, nothing less. Just like the Pro. By the time the X got released MS only had 6 first party studios. Now they have 23. Big difference that competition will feel this gen.

"None of that stuff had to be a fatal blow, had Xbox committed to their games output. If exciting times are ahead for Xbox, they will come from a change in attitude, not because Xbox got dealt a better hand."

If exciting times are ahead for Xbox is because they´re fruits of Phil Spencer´s vision for Xbox. Period.

@darklion

"Actually according to sales tracking Series is not outperforming Xbox One."

Yeah? And where´s your source?

Sony plans to entertain gamers.
MS plans to beat Sony

You see the problem here?

Outside_ofthe_Box144d ago

Why are we acting like Sony isn't the industry leader?

Darkborn143d ago

Or hasn't been for a long while.

elazz143d ago

highest revenue of any gaming company and one of the highest profits, PS accounts for loads of money for all those f2p game like fortnite and warzone, release acclaimed games every year. Yes, PS is here to stay

DaBudSmoka143d ago (Edited 143d ago )

@elazz sony has been here to stay since 1994

Magic_Spatula143d ago

Cuz these so called "journalists" need their hits.

JEECE143d ago

Because we were around in 2005-2006 and we remember what can happy when Sony gets complacent while their competition gets hungry. That situation doesn't look to be repeating itself, but we are aware that the winds can change.

RauLeCreuset143d ago

"That situation doesn't look to be repeating itself, but we are aware that the winds can change."

The situation has really been more consistent than you're giving it credit for by dredging up 2005 - 2006. People like to point to Xbox's closest loss as an example of how easily they can win. The PS2 had record setting dominance that has yet to be replicated. It is the zenith for PS market share in the over two decades they've been in the market across 5 home consoles. The mega giant MS managed to close the gap the next gen, assisted by a year head start, RROD rebuys, a cheaper price, and some of Playstation's most revered exclusives going multiplat. Good on them. As they should. They still lost. That was their zenith. A losing effort. The PS4 came and ate into that. So much so that Xbox is moving toward a "console agnostic" strategy, to borrow a term from the article. The winds have been blowing consistently in one direction, if maybe not as strongly in the PS3 years.

Orchard143d ago

Being the industry leader doesn't mean you don't have to compete with others. Don't compete and you won't be the leader for long.

InUrFoxHole143d ago

No one is acting like that. Some gamers are getting insecure because they see the competition making big moves and they feel like sony should be doing the same.

The interesting business dynamic from my perspective - Sony will be killing it for the next few years while MS is positioning their new properties. All MS will have to combat this is pushing the value envelope and give stuff away (i.e.GamePass). How much $ MS is willing to sink into this, and how effective that is at maintaining their market share by the time their IPs are ready is important. If MS lets their market share shrink by a lot, it will be more impactful to make their new games exclusive, further dipping into profit, and there will be more pressure to release those games on PS. There's going to be a lot of money spent over the next few years to win hearts and minds imo

slayernz143d ago

Yep I think ms knows they can't compete with the quality of games ps is pumping out so is throwing money at it now. They've very deep pockets so be interesting to see how long they keep this strategy up....at the end of the day though if ps keeps pumping out the best games it won't matter how much money ms throws away

crazyCoconuts143d ago

I think there's a theoretical scenario where they could put Sony out of business with enough money. It would take a lot but it's hard to combat free handouts

Abnor_Mal143d ago

If it ain't broke dont fix it.

kayoss143d ago

if it aint broke, dont fix it. But do improve on it.

Abnor_Mal143d ago

True, but if you call yourself improving on "greatness" too much you can inadvertently ruin what you were trying to preserve in the first place.

Starman69142d ago

The way Sony are going, we will have between 6-8 too first party exclusives per year! And I certainly hope that happens x
