This was actually a good read. I don't play a lot of this type of game, so I learned a lot.

It was a good read.

It's a shame this doesn't sound like my kind of game in term of mechanics/gameplay loop (sounds frustrating and better suited to a small indie type games with short levels). Dying and restarting in something like Hotline Miami is fine because the levels are short and the pacing is right. Doesn't sound so great for this type of larger AAA game.

The setting looks cool, like Dead space crossed with Control, though i'm not a fan of the main characters look.

Zarock1460d ago

WOW what a waste of time of a game. Thanks for clearing things up.

NerdBurglars1459d ago

It definitely is not a waste of a game, it is very good, it just isn't for everyone. I am not a huge fan of overly challenging games but I find myself coming back to this game over and over after I get too angry and turn the PS5 off. I wont look back on this game fondly id say as I have been angry playing it more than happy but it is a good game and a nice direction to see an exclusive go.

Zarock1459d ago

Losing progress when you die. Grinding all over again when you die.
Definitely waste of time.

jznrpg1460d ago (Edited 1460d ago )

I like difficult games . I’m sure it’s not that hard if you learn the mechanics and how to read the game . Too many people want their hand held in games these days but I like a challenge rogue likes are supposed to be hard so you can learn the board , moves , what to watch out for and gain power over time . If you suck at games or aren’t into learning mechanics and to have some challenging gameplay skip it . I plan on seeing it through to the end . The Souls games aren’t hard at all really just challenging at first until you learn the mechanics and moves from enemies .

myfathersbastard1460d ago

Good read. I think I get it a little more now. But I’m still undecided if I’ll pick this up. Might need to watch some real gameplay videos to decide

robtion1460d ago

Game is $125 for the standard edition in Australia (on PS store). $109 is the cheapest I have seen it for on day 1.

For comparison most games I bought for the PS4 were $69-$89 on day 1.

I'm really enjoying the PS5 but I will be waiting for discounts on most games this gen it seems. I don't think some publishers are in touch with the current economic climate.

GamingSinceForever1459d ago

The economic climate likely doesn’t effect those with a PS5, else you wouldn’t have had the means to buy one.

specialguest1460d ago (Edited 1460d ago )

On paper this game sounds frustrating regarding certain features and not in a Souls game way. However, there has to be a reason why it's highly rated. I'm not going to judge it until I've tried it
From article:

There are no permanent stat increases. You will never be able to permanently increase health, armor, firepower or anything that is advantageous to your survival in combat.

Every death will wipe all progress and bring you back to the start of the game.

Each time you respawn, you will experience a completely different, randomly generated world. The enemies are never in the same locations and it is not possible to predict and prepare for what is ahead based on past experiences.

You can teleport to other biomes, skipping the boss fights but only after you find the random location of the teleporter.

Stronger weapons will only be dropped when you have killed enough enemies to increase your combat proficiency, which resets when you die. Reaching a new biome will give you an item that increases it a few levels automatically but the level up does not apply to your current weapon. Your level 0 pistol will remain a level 0 pistol when you teleport to a higher biome and take on much stronger enemies.

Guyfamily9991460d ago

I know they're different games but I was just expecting this game to be more like Hades, which I absolutely loved and was the first rougelite I played. The accessibility "God Mode" in Hades was so well executed too. The lack of that, permanent stat increases, or even the ability to save are putting me off this game.

Returnal Beginning of a "New Future" at Housemarque, Is the Game That "Allowed" Studio to Join Sony

According to Housemarque, Returnal marks the beginning of a "new future" at the studio, and is the game that them to join Sony.

fr0sty315d ago (Edited 315d ago )

Returnal was fantastic, and I'm looking forward to seeing what these folks create with Sony in the future.

Abear21315d ago

I’m ready for the sequel

Storm23314d ago

Ithas been my favorite experience of this generation so far I think. Can't wait to see what Housemarque is working on now.

jznrpg315d ago

They make some fun arcade styles games. Returnal is one of the best games so far this generation. I wonder what is next

amobius315d ago

returnal is easily one of the most underrated games this gen. a lot of people with ps5s dont know it exists.

fr0sty315d ago

And it exists for free if you subscribe to PS+ Extra or Premium.

Kornholic315d ago

For free? 12 months of PS Plus Extra costs 130 € and Premium is 160 €.

Where I live you can buy Returnal for as little as 15 € if you buy it used. Even at full price it is nowhere near the cost of PS Plus Extra or Premium.

So how on earth can you se that it exists for free if you subscribe to those paid subscription services?

ChasterMies314d ago

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I think “Returnal” is perfectly rated. The restart mechanic is not the most fun for everyone.

JEECE314d ago

Yeah, I think the Tower of Sisyphus would have addressed this somewhat if it had been in the game earlier. The gameplay is great, but I sometimes chose to play other things when I didn't want to commit to a run (particularly before they added the save feature). The tower provided a way to have fun with the arcade gameplay without investing in a full run, which was nice, and felt in line with their prior games.

gold_drake314d ago

returnal was amazkng, i loved everything anout it

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC379d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier379d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo379d ago (Edited 379d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal379d ago (Edited 379d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k4379d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy85379d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga379d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS7378d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

raWfodog379d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto379d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies379d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled379d ago (Edited 379d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS7378d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast379d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

DaniMacYo379d ago

Helldivers 2 is exactly what gaming needed. I’m loving it.

Some solid choices but i feel they're late to the party. I'm subscriptioned out like most people.

vTuro24394d ago

This made me check out the current month and holy crap it's actually a great bundle. It's unfortunate that Saints Row is among them but the Nioh 2 and Afterimage make it worth it. I think I'll probably grab it and give away Saints Crap.
