If you happy to pay more, more fool you, as once £70 is standard then it’s £80 then it’s £90. There is no need for the increase sure budgets have increased last time I check so had profits being as they’ve just had one of their best 12 months ever pandemic has been very helpful and these big blockbusters games earn millions of not billions so maybe spend less on the PR and put the prices back down to where they should be. If Resi 8 an established big franchise and let’s face it looks like they’ve got a banger on their hands can release next generation version with lenticular sleeve DLC and have change from £50 then there’s not excuses. I’ll skip em day1 backlog will see me good for another couple years get the games months 3-6 much cheaper. It’s the same or very similar to switch people just try take the piss. Funnily enough Capcom we’re one of the worst trying £30/40 for resi4 whilst selling it everywhere else for £10/15 max. It’s new consoles they try it. They’ll soon knock it off if people didn’t blindly rush out and buy just because it’s the first major next gen release since launch.

If you pay for RRP for any games your a fool. RRP for games have always been fairly pricy expecially digital.

Its simple if $70 is a bit expensive for you or you don't feel like the game is worth $70 then simply don't buy it on release. Wait until it's on sale. Games drop in price rapidly. Look at the likes of Cyberpunk that can be had for like $25-$30 now.

Same with say Demon's souls or Sackboy Adventures if you have a look they can have had for $40-$50. If this is such a massive issue and a fair whack of the user base refuse to pay $70 then sooner rather than later they will lower the RRP of future games.

Ocelot agreed that’s why the only one I paid £65 for was miles day one came with a copy of Spider-Man remastered to keep platinum’d miles sold it on (I’ll wait for a free copy if I wanna play it again) but Nintendo day1 isn’t foolish. They don’t drop the price for years and the quality speaks for itself (look at the top 100 games ever who crops up a solid 30% of the list (Nintendo) GTA5 day1 sure that price is expensive now 7 years 3 gens and 100 million copies later but that price didn’t drop overnight and I’d more than got enough hours out of it for the money on the campaign alone before the prices dropped. You gotta support some devs if no one bought day1 it would be a major problem it’s just picking em wisely, or like you said voting with Wallet which I’ll be doing I’ll be getting the games launching at normal prices the others can wait unless it’s GTA6 that’s a day1 even at £80 levels of excellence are another level compared to a lot.

A fair point if you're talking about third party games but none of the Sony launch games on PS5 have dropped in price where I live, at least digitally, and the price of the physical versions is usually very close to full digital price and sometimes more (looking at the prices on Amazon UK which is a huge vendor).

If Demon's Souls doesn't drop in price at all during the Summer Sale, Sony are officially trying to force people to get used to paying €80 because GOT and TLOU2 (much better selling games) had gone on sale at a 35% lower price by this point.

Returnal probably isn't going to drop in price for a long time, which is particularly bad for Europeans who have to pay €80. I might break for R&C: Rift Apart, but overall, this price increase is not justified and the intentional lack of sales is grueling.

Anyone in the UK who don't like £70 RRP I understand. Don't get me wrong games like Returnal I won't pay £70 for as I simply don't know if it's the type of game I like. It's one I would rent or get once cheaper.

But games I know I'll play and enjoy like spider man and demon's souls or ratchet and clank £70 am ok with (well I never pay RRP). I still play both demon's souls and spider man 6 months after release demon's souls I have put at least 150 hours into so I have had my £60 worth already.

Anyone in the UK who in a PS5. I suggest maybe check out boomerang rentals. It's £10.99 a month and you can rent brand new releases including returnal. You can keep as long as your a subscriber. Personally i think this service is a better value than gamepass imo. As you are not locked to renting for one platform and can rent any new release not just what appears on gamepass.

Because inflation is a real thing. Prices go up for everything over time, but I rarely ever see people whine about that. If anything, people should appreciate that prices didn't go up earlier.

Since this topic seems to be about Sony I think they are strategy is they are going to make big Blockbuster games and they are going to keep them at full price for as long as possible like Nintendo. As far as game prices itself goes from all publishers thing is you have to take inflation into account and game prices had stayed the same for two generations. But we also must take into account the game prices are not the same everywhere and some countries some gamers end up paying a lot more than us in the USA

The best thing I can tell you is wait for sales and usually I buy most of my games towards the end of the year when we have the holiday sales. Most of us have humongous backlogs so I think we should try to finish some of those games and wait for the price to drop. But the other issue is with physical media not as big as digital that some of these physical games go out of print much faster now so if you want a physical copy of retail price or close to it you have a choice to either pay now or pay more in second-hand market

It's just not the development cost these publishers have gone crazy with PR marketing just look at GTA v that had 250 million budget and have if not close to half of it going towards advertisement think about that. But publishers started to include that price in development and say that's how much the game cost

Everyone who is for the price increase or against it just keep one thing in mind those defending it now may regret it later then with the next generation of consoles the price goes to 80 and every generation it goes up 5 to 10 dollars. I know gaming industries in a really healthy place and I think the only thing that can really kind of bring everything back to normalcy is a crash of some sort of the gaming market

When Sony tried to shut down the PS3 market look at the second hand market prices for those games. They skyrocketed and they're still the same because people are scared that's Sony will shut down PSN sooner rather than later on PS3 and vita

Let's also not forget Microsoft try to double the price of a services so that is still coming just because they delayed it doesn't mean it's not happening. All these companies are looking out for profits no matter how we look at it if it was up to them they would charge a premium for everything

I know that games are getting expensive but thats the fact of life and inflation. Food is getting more expensive, would you stop eating food? Let's be realistic about things. Not to knock on the game or the developer, they're both great, but Housemarque is a small developer who, up into this point, were making games on the indie level.
Even Returner comes off a AA experience, as quality a one as it is. There also wasn't a giant marketing campaign behind it. Mostly online, and covered by games press.
Do you really think this game was so expensive to make that they just had to charge that extra $10 to make the profits needed?

The first signs of the price hike came in the form of sports titles that are some of the best sellers every year, make insane amounts of money in microtransactions and dlc, and are typically little more than glorified roster updates .... yet they're just "so expensive to make" that they need to raise the cost of their titles.
That should tell you everything.

Games have gone up here in Canada. I was already skipping a lot of games to wait for sales or GOTY editions. Games are now $90 CAD, that's $101 after tax. I'm waiting for sales on almost everything from now on, or just skipping games entirely.

Backlog is big enough and quality enough to not make me need to rush out day1 for £70. Yup start of PS4 it was $60 by the end of it, it became 80. Was 67 after tax to 90 after tax, now it's 101. I kinda laugh at US people crying about a $10 increase when he had $20 within the same gen and it wasn't even Sony games that started it.

Gamepass is a godsend, honestly makes waiting for games so much easier, by the time I am done with the backlog, the game's that aren't on it are usually cheap.

Just last month I have played like Octopath, Battlefield V (mainly wanted to try out the war stories), Doom Eternal and got to try out Squadrons.

It is great for introducing you to games you won't usually play either like Octopath, I have always had an aversion to turn based games, but this is so good, and is getting so much of my time.

Then lots of old stuff I get to play as well like Jade Empire, Dragon Age (also another I would have never tried otherwise but loved it)

I think Returnal looks amazing without a doubt and I really want to play it, but its funny when people start pulling stats to counter the argument as what I just said isn't a good deal at all.

I got a PS4 Pro late in the game. I grabbed one on the cheap for $130 about 2 years ago. There was around 10 games I actually wanted to play via the Now service.
The exclusives they actually had on there would have cost me only a little more than a year of now, and I'd actually own them. There's so much shovelware on there. It's like going to a used game shop, looking for Wii games.

Since November, I have played Fallen Order, Gears 5 plus its expansion, Nier Automata, Hellblade, and MLB The Show 21. That is just a handfull of games that I have played that equal over 200 bucks in value, having only paid 60 dollars total. Throw in that my son uses my sub for his XBox as well, the value doubles. If you think those games I mentioned are of "questionable" quality, then I don't think you know what quality is my guy.

I’ll be skipping ratchet also, handy I’ve literally just played the other one for first time ever, brilliant game got the platinum but I can wait for couple months easy. £65 just doesn’t sell it for me. £50/55 is more than enough it’s pure greed. It’s not as bad if we’re talking one of single player or that’s the whole game but when you think majority of games then have dlc, season passes of Microtransactions that soon racks up. Backlog has more than enough quality for me. Otherwise there’s Resi8 and was gonna get death loop as that was also £47/48 so why others think £70 is fine off the back of the year we as humans just had, yet they’ve just had some of their best months ever, pure greed. It’s not about being poor although I can understand for some this is just a past time. The same people who complain that 70 is too much for a game defend Wii and wiiU bare bone ports at 60. Switch games in general shouldn't even be 60. Comparing a demons souls, Returnal or Ratchet to New Pokemon Snap and it is extremely apparent why 3 of those cost 10 dollars more.

Once you allow a company to release games with 2 generations old tech at 60 you can't expect the company using cutting edge tech to just charge the same.

The best way to let know that a price is simply to buy the product until it's fit the price you are willing to pay.

Personally, I rarely buy a single-player game only day 1 for various reasons

1) my experience will not be reduced by waiting a couple of months. In fact, there's a good chance it will be better with DLC included and patches already in place.

2) Price will be lower or the same for more content.

3) Companies are quite creative in offering a cheap alternative way to play some games until the said title becomes affordable.

I actually don't mind an increase benefiting the developers. If a game is great and it's clearly a labor of love, I'm happy to throw money at them. But I also understand not everyone has that option. I just happen to be an ardent believer in the idea of "don't feed the artist - pay the artist and they can feed themselves". It takes a long time to make great games, and quick support is really the only way I have to show that.

That said, I'm also a bit picky. The only time I ever shell out full price is for games I really believe in. And even then, it is not uncommon for me to go above the standard full price for special or collectors editions. I've got a decent amount of collector's editions from just from PS4.

I do, however, take profound issue with the C-level executives hoarding the money from the actual talent that put these games together. And for that reason, to answer the question of "do I support paying $70 for games?", the answer is an emphatic "it depends". If it's a good developer doing great work and they do well by their staff, I can get behind that. These tend to be Japanese companies where executive pay isn't so egregious and there's not such a profound wealth gap. Capcom has only recently gotten back on my good side where I'm very enthusiastic about supporting their content now. For Activision or EA? Haven't bought a single game from Activision since PS2 and my last EA purchase was Dead Space 3. I tend to express my principles and protest with dollars - voting with my wallet, if you will.

That's not the world though.

The first games to vocally push the price raise were sports games that are, typically, just glorified roster updates that are always some of the best sellers of the year, and make loads in microtransactions.
Even here with Sony, these games they put out almost always sell insane numbers, and they're still, if you think about it, investments to sell consoles, thus accessories, and even subscriptions. Personally, I can't justify the price hike in these situations.
Even with Returner, a great game as it is, seems like a mid-tier release, from a developer of around 80 people, and while it was marketed, it wasn't these insane hundred million dollar marketing campaigns you'd see from the Last of Us or Uncharted.

I'm not one to pay full price because of budget. I'm one to pay full price as an endorsement of effort. I'm not tethering cost of development to price. I'm tethering the amount I pay to my support for a project. For me, full price = full support, contingent upon where the money goes and if the developers are well compensated. People pay full price for fighting games, and I've done that a number of times in my gaming career.

Just want to clarify that point. I would never even pay discounted prices for sports games because the companies that make them are less than good and there's a low level of effort. Has nothing to do with the budget for me.

Same here. In my currency, it risen to a pretty major psychological barrier. If I am to pay this kind of money for a new game now, I will do it only when I'm 100% sure I will get the money's worth. Ratchet & Clank will be the first for me. Returnal must wait for a price drop, sorry Sony. This $10 changed a lot IMO. I'm a dev 15 years now and there is no reason for this price hike, except for it being 'next-gen'. If you use a few crafty search techniques & some handy tips on the internet, you can get the prices back down to a more affordable level.

For example, a month ago I pre ordered Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart along with Resident Evil Village (PS5) for £99.48.
Resident Evil Village (PS5) £44.74
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (PS5) £54.74
I then applied a discount voucher code & got a further £4.97 off my total spend, bringing my total to £94.51.

So in a roundabout sort of manner, splitting the difference of the £94.51 in half, both games work themselves out at £47.25.

The tricks are to know of the cheaper gaming sites & selecting whichever one is offering the best deal along with a discount voucher and striking when the iron is hot. This was how I was also able to procure a PS5 on day one, by pre ordering from an online retailer on 3 month credit payments along with £40 off the price. I was also sneaky and got used copies on Amazon in January of both Valhalla & Cold War (ps5) for £38 & £45 respectively. So the cheaper deals are still out there.

My perspective is that this increase in game price is not warranted for the sole reason that most devs earn a lot of money through in-game purchases. Just take a quick look at EAs MT earnings, and you’ll see its more than the profit gained from selling the games.

"IMO" This game is not worth $70 from what I have experienced in the game so far and due to the controversial decision to make it the way it is "NO SAVE SYSTEM" i wouldn't recommend it to others. I have died several times going through the crimson desert and forest looking for stuff before a boss and at this point I really don't want to play this game anymore because I'm not getting anywhere.

Returnal isn't an awesome game but it isn't a terrible game either, it's visually pretty, has great sound design and atmosphere and even the mystery of the story interest me but I would rather watch this as a NETFLIX limited series than to sit here, play, die, lose everything and blah blah blah.

Consumers hold all the power, unfortunately, we,, consumers as a whole, don't realise this and we also don't have the willpower to say 'No'. Yup, myself included.

I bought Returnal full price, even though the game does not warrant it. Most games don't, unless we are talking Playstation exclusives or The Witcher 3, but we still pay full price. That is on us.

We are too blame. There is a reason Apple iPhones and Samsung phones cost what they do, because consumers are willing to pay the price that is set for them.

If we were all smart and had any willpower what so ever, most games wouldn't even be $60, smart phones would be a lot cheaper, as would a lot of things.

NEVER pay full price for ANYTHING! Only a fool thinks wasting money paying full price for a game is "supporting the developer". I really don't understand why people have a problem with this? The way things work is that the Seller tries to get the most profit from a product, and the Customer tries to pay as little as possible for it. There is nothing wrong with that! And don't be fooled by some whiny developer or publisher about not paying full price, They are just playing their part trying to get the most profit for themselves, and they will say anything to get some poor sucker to sympathize with them. If The publisher cannot make a profit from the sales of their product, then it is ON THEM, not the customer.

In the ps4 generation I bought 3 games at full price and launch day, rdr2, ghost of tsushima and cyberpunk, the latter made me rethink if I will ever buy a game at full price let alone at launch day. I bought the ps4 in 2018 so I had a good backlog of games that a could buy at a great discount, I'll do the same with the ps5 because paying 80eur for a game is ludicrous.

Price would be a huge problem if amazing new games were coming weekly... This opinions wont change the reality. Its good you buy day one. Its average just wait for the cut in price and its Quick. Even so its much better then spending money and never own a single game with services...

I understand people being frustrated but the cost of games has not really increased in 20 years but the cost of making them has increased ten fold. Since PS3 /360 gen Microsoft and Sony have introduced lots of methods of making additional money from within the game and all have been pushed back by the end users. So it really is a no win situation, we want large budget AAA exclusives but to pay the same amount we did 10 years ago.

In Scandinavia we pay $100 for games. I’m not complaining, games are expensive to develop.
