Today on COG Considers, we talk about one of the worst things a horror game can throw at you--and why jump scares can sometimes be good.
Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”
Haha Not only is bold and creatively not what the industry wants, it’s not what most people want.
They want to get scammed and pay twice for a thing they already own.
Was the SH2 remake even bold? Or was it more or less just a 1 to 1 over the shoulder remake?
A large vinyl collection has been announced for Silent Hill 2 and looks great.
Includes savings on The Crew: Motorfest, Resident Evil 4, and much more.
without atmosphere and proper immersion ...jumpscares are meaningless ...and as you included RE, SH etc ...these games originally cared to create the proper environment for atmosphere ....(like movies did that time see Predator 1/Alien 1 movie
the nowdays sequels go for only for cheap tactics that are only for laughs . not immesive at all...wihtout any knowledge of how to make good horror gameplay
until dawn did jump scares really well - especially when you could record it and go back and watch your reaction....had one of my boys watching it while i played a bit and some of our reactions were priceless, still go back and watch them every now and then for a bit of a laugh
I don't like jump scare personally, i just can't handle them. But i do love creepy and eerie atmosphere like silent hill etc.
I do feel these days a lot of horror games are just series of jump scares. If anyone knows any current games with silent hill/early RE game vibes give me recommendations!
I’m fine with jump scares done right for my standard gaming setup. I also know for a fact that jump scares are one of the main reasons I have 0 interest in VR gaming tho lol
Jump scares are stupid useless things you get from Five Nights at Freddy's. Resident Evil's scares were because of good writing and directing.
