PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Continue Operations

From PS Blog: "Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.

Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned."

I think they were testing the waters with that live price hike, and the reaction was anticipated, with a plan to respond as they did. It's possible PS just didn't appreciate the amount of support out there for the PS3 and Vita stores, but there's something to be said for FOMO driving sales, and more people being invested in the stores after the threat of losing them must be nice for Sony.

It’s great that Jim Ryan himself wrote the blog post about the reversal because it is indicative of a leader who takes responsibility, as opposed to passing on the update to community staff member or leaving it unnamed.

We should still keep in mind that the announcement of shutting the stores down will definitely come in the future, probably not anytime soon until they have some sort of a solution to fix this. PSP store shutting down shouldn't be an issue as Vita's store already supports many PSP games.

I feel like I'm the only person that doesn't care about this at all and I'm a playstation fan. I have a psp, vita and ps3 in a box and closing the store doesn't affect me at all because even if I wanted to play those games that Sony said we still could if the store closes down, I just wouldn't. I guess you could say I like to buy new games that come out and everytime I buy a remaster or play an old game that I've already poured hours into, I never finish it. I never finished the skyrim remaster on ps4, pc or vr, which I bought all of them after the ps3 version I spent hundreds of hours in. I never finished dragons dogma dark arisen after hundreds of hours originally, never finished demons souls or dark souls remastered, after also hundreds of hours into each origionally
I also couldn't bring myself to finish the spyro or crash remakes. All the remakes and remasters get old after a few min to me and I couldn't possibly play a ps2 game at this point.

I guess it's because I don't buy into the BC rhetoric that Xbox is pushing due to them having no launch games. Let's not forget that if Xbox wasn't spamming about BC and game pass from every rooftop ever built in every universe, this would have been a small issue at best.

Ill be honest to say that I own the UMD for the game (crisis Core) same for Mega Man power up.
bud did I know that you can buy Castlevania Chronicle on the Vita.
Point is there's a lot of exclusives games that are not found on other systems or are hard to find.
Having the option still buy the game (unless of licensing issue) is important even if you don't use the feature.

As a Vita owner (ok PSP/PS3 too) I do take time to thanks Sony for reversing that stupid @ss decision in the 1st place.

I'll be honest that I gave up on Nintendo a long time ago.
I have a Switch lite and I have yet to purchase 1 digital game on it for the simple reason of them giving me the middle finger with my past digital purchase.
Also I rarely buy remaster (only if the game is in special or not available on the previous console) because I condone the idea of paying full price for the same experience that basically cost a fraction to produce on the newest console.
Do a complete remake or make a collection then I'll be happy to contribute but make a straight port with nothing new and unless it's 15$ you can count me out.

Because as PlayStation fans it's in our best interest for the company to continue to thrive. It wasn't very long ago that Sony was in very real trouble financially and the future of PlayStation was in doubt. Sony doesn't have the ability to piss money away like MS can. They don't have the luxury of having an enormous revenue stream from an OS/productivity software monopoly. They have to be smart with how they choose to invest. Personally I thought closing the PS3/PSP/Vita stores made perfect sense. But if Sony has found a way to make it work financially, eh so be it. The 15 gamers that actually care will be happy.

Do you people even understand what you're saying? The main cost driver is allowing people to download content from your servers without any new revenue.

i.e. Servers and network bandwidth are not free. So in essence if they removed new PS3 purchases and kept downloads available, then they're still bleeding money. More so, in fact, because there is no money coming in, however minuscule it is nowadays.

Secondly, if you guys think that a giant corporation like Sony is going to "struggle" or go out of business from letting people download and make purchases, and not from making terrible management decisions on a grand scale, then I hope you're still wearing your helmets and your caretaker is nearby.

I think that part of the problem is that they have offered 0 solutions for game preservations nor did they explained why they needed to shut down the shop so soon.
PPL seems to forget that by having the PSP digital store close Sony is basically saying well you still have piracy if you really want to play that digital game.

Now I'm sure that it would have been a lot smoother if
- Sony would have announced a way to play your PSP/Vita/PS3 game on Ps5
- Sony would have explained how they would have kept alive the legacy digital-only game (ex PS NOW)
- etc.

Let's not also forget that by closing the store it's sending quite a negative message to ppl buying a PS5 digital console.

I actually had a list of games I planned to buy before August (namely trying to get basically every Final Fantasy and Persona game available between PS1, PSP, and Vita), I just was going to do it gradually up until the shutdown.

PS3 I supported like crazy when it was out, so there's less for me to go back and get there.

I mean, I'm far more concerned about him trying to focus everything in on a few franchises rather than taking the time to develop new ones. This would be an easy opportunity to learn from MS. Thats great news for those invested in digital games but, this is how Jim Ryan operates, which is just like Phil Spencer. Get rid of him, anybody but Jim Ryan, even getting Phil Harrison back would be a better alternative. Why not Shuhei Yoshida?

I gotta say, didn't see that one coming. This is how Sony should ALWAYS be.
Now, of course the PS3 Store will actually close at some point in the more or less foreseeable future, but this gives us a lot more time to prepare for it, and hopefully gives Sony time to think of a way to migrate those PS3 games on the PS4/PS5 Store.
