The upcoming release of Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is one of the most highly-anticipated Xbox Game Studios titles in development, and lead actor Melina Juergens has shared a new video diary about the making of the game.
Hellblade 2 is confirmed to be around 9 hours in length, and there's a strong case as to why that relatively short length will likely be one of its strongest suits.
The first game was a similar length but if I remember correctly it didn't carry the full price of AAA games when the first on launched. If I were them, I would take a note from the pages of some of the most successful games this year and keep it a $39.99. I think the result is they will sell more. It will balance out because at the higher price they will sell less. I think in the end the lower price will wind up generating the most revenue. Of course I am talking about the PC release and then the eventually PS5 release whenever it hits.
It was not. The first game had a length of about 4-5 hours.
I bet the new game is similar long.
I think MS can take that chances of a 9 hour game because of GP. Vast majority of Xbox gamers play games using GP(no doubt excellent value)
Personally I bought the first game when it was under $20 and I would have done the same if I didn’t have GP. I rather have 9 hours of quality content than 50 hours of fetch quests. As I grow and have less time for gaming I honestly don’t mind medium size games because there are way too many open world games
9 hours is totally fine. Especially for Senua's fans who beat the first game.
This. In fact I think the original was only 8 hours so this is right in line with expectations.
Okay but they didn't have MS' money for the first game. Now they do so 9 hour is unacceptable.
Let us see if it truly does somehow improve the game after the time spent waiting, or if this will be cited in the downsides of reviews.
It took me 7 hours to beat the first game. But since it's on gamepass on PC and Xbox who cares about the length
Really depends on how enjoyable those 9 hours will be. And we will have to wait and see, i guess.
If the game will be 9 hours of gameplay, full of interesting battles with an engaging combat system, good puzzles, atmosphere and story (with right direction and satisfying ending) - sure, 9 hours is plenty.
But if it's 9 hours of cutscenes, slow walking, awkward combat, braindead puzzles - dunno, not worth it, in my eyes.
IMO, games not overstay their welcome, but they also shouldn't be like an appetizer with a cliffhanger ending. But again, will have to wait and see for myself first.
4-5 hours of them will be cutscenes, another 2-3 hours will be walking and listening to senua.
It's a "game reviewer's" dream and it's no big deal to them because they get free games, so they can review it quickly and they don't have to pay for it.
Hellblade length confirmed while PS4 exclusive:
Team A - "justify"
Team B - "LOL short"
Goes multiplat:
Team A & B - "cool cool"
Hellblade II length confirmed while XB exclusive:
Team A - "LOL short"
Team B - "justify"
Goes multiplat:
Team A & B - "cool cool"
You give the XBOX team too much credit. Killer graphics - female hero - action/slasher = ship it
Nine hours is like maybe two sittings max but it could easily be tackled in a single sitting if someone wanted to and it's been well established on this very site people don't like "one and done" games, especially short ones, now all of a sudden its a "strong suit"? smh
For me it depends on the price. Sixty bucks for 9 hours isn't a great value proposition for me.
Seems short to me and I felt the 12 hour spiderman 2 game was to short. I feel the same way about this game. Luckily its part of Game Pass so I will still play it but would have debated full price like i did with Spiderman 2.
How the hell did Spider-Man 2 take you only 12 hours?? You must have just sped through the main story.....don't look left.....don't look right....just skip everything and go. I only did about half of the side stuff and missions and it still took me over 20 hours.
I agree. I don't know how it took him just 12 hours to beat. He definitely skip a lot of side missions
The simple facts that lots of ppl agree with you just show that ppl want to hate Xbox just for the sake of hating
10 years really?
the 1st game was released in 2017 :)
Unreal 5 engine was released in 2022 but hey nice try.
I didn't have a problem with Ico, Miles Morales or RE3 being short so not really a problem here either. Especially since it will be a gamepass rental that costs me 5 bucks.
9/10 hours for a quality SP game is absolutely fine. There are more than enough lengthy games out there if that's what you want.
We were told with MS massive cash this would be much bigger. Turns out after 6 years it's basically the same length, and the 'gameplay' if you can call it that is mostly the same. Well at least it looks pretty, even if it's 30fps with a letterbox view.
Funny that the Xbox fanatics always talk crap about PlayStation's '3rd person narrative movie games' yet a 9 hour walking simulator is suddenly the next thing since sliced bread lol.
I can appreciate shorter games though. A great 9 experience can be better than a 30 hour repetitive drag fest.
The Order was full price, should not have been. This is $20 cheaper than full, I’d argue $40 is the better price, but still.
I don’t really get the Miles Morales comparisons, The Order, absolutely, I enjoyed The Order but it was a terrible value proposition. In Miles Morales if you just run the main story, sure, 9 hours, but there’s a lot of side activities and a much higher replay value that ups that number for most fans significantly. It is legitimate to point out that this game is quite short for the money, and mostly like doesn’t have a lot of replay potential. That being said, it could be an amazing experience nonetheless, and I hope it’s worth it for those who get it at launch. We simply won’t know til then. It may be the next Order, or it may justify its asking price. We shall see.
Hellblade 2 is 50 bucks, only 10 less than The Order was originally. So this should, if we're being fair, bomb critically for it's short length. I personally couldn't care less, mind you I bought The Order when it was cheaper, but with the amount of work that most likely went into Hellblade it's price is justified and it's length is a non issue. But people bitched and moaned about short games, so why is it different now?
"a strong case as to why that relatively short length will likely be one of its strongest suits"... xbox games waited years for this...
People were also criticizing The Order: 1886 for its length. Good to see people finally coming around to the idea that games don't all have to be very long. Of course, I suspect the people who criticized The Order are now okay with Hellblade II... BUT let's set that aside.
The way I see these types of games, they work best at either a discounted price or rented.
I don't see this game selling very well at all. High uptake on Game Pass, sure. The $50 purchase though? Not likely, I suspect.
It's going to flop on xbox. They will rely on playstation users to recoup the dev cost for sure. Certainly not the system seller they were hoping for when they showed the game all those yrs ago. Depending on the price and what else is in the release window for ps5 I might check it out. I love cinematic game, just a bit unsure when it comes to replay value and have to see what the combat is like.
The thing about Ninja Theory games (in my opinion, anyway) is that they are all narrative with less attention to gameplay.
I'm sure people will love it and that's perfectly fine. But for me, their games better fit the mold of "one and done". People like to say that a lot about playstation games, but I've replayed Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, and others multiple times. The story is great, but the gameplay is really fun. I don't get that from NT games
While I disagree with the logic of everything is okay because.... gamepass. A game lacking should never be justified...with the excuse "We'll it's in gamepass." However a shorter game is absolutely welcome as these days games are to long and full of bloat I welcome a game that can deliver an amazing story and get to the point without filler.
Hahaha, 6 years development for a 9 hrs game. Lol. Microsoft first party straight stealing money from them.
Fine with me. I usually don’t finish super long games anyway unless they are absolutely brilliant perfection to me. At some point I usually get bored. Quality over quantity
It's so funny hearing some ppl complaining about length and price when they were praising a PS4/PS5 game called Spiderman Miles Morales
I'm pretty sure that the 49$ to justify an expansion was quite okay back then.
I got it free with my copy of Spider-Man Remastered. I definitely wouldn't have paid for it.
So you're saying that you're not ok with paying 50$ for a shorter game but you're okay with paying 50$ for an upgrade that PC players and Xbox players usually get for free.
Let's see the cost of remasters on PC and Xbox
Witcher 3 0$
Resident Evil 2-3-7 remake 0$
Quake 2 0$
Doom Eternal, Forza, Gears...... 0$
@Petebloodyonion
That's one hell of a reach man. No, what I'm saying is that I hadn't played it originally on the PS4 so I bought Remastered for £45 when I bought my PS5, and it also came with Miles Morales. How is that saying I'm ok with paying for upgrades that usually come for free on PC and Xbox? For the record, those upgrades you mentioned were also free on PS5, with the exception of Gears, Forza that weren't on PS5 anyway.
I'm not sure how you reached your conclusion, but whatever works for your narrative I guess.
Meanwhile if it was a PS Exclusive game it would been ripped to shreds.
The Order is one of the best games last gen. The only criticism you can have against is the length.
If the gameplay and puzzle design haven't moved on from the 1st game, then 8 or 9 hours will be fine, because its going to get super repetitive, super quickly.
Good to see they're not padding the game with boring stuff like Ubisoft's open world shenanigans. It was one of my fears when they announced it would be bigger and have a higher budget.
I was excited to play Spider-Man for a long time, but when I finally did, I stopped playing after a couple of hours because of that reason. The finding towers and going around collecting random stuff and doing random missions is not fun for me anymore.
I can play around 30min / 1 hour a day. So a 9 hours game would take me 9~18 days to finish it, what would be enough. The older I get, the more I enjoy games that last around 10 hours at most.
Don't care about length, care about how good the hours are. Not every game needs to be 50 hours and take over your life or become a second job. Not sure why this is a debate. It's good to see what started out as basically an indie game become a big triple A title.
The concern however is whether what was once a niche game can justify its investment with its reviews and performance. I suspect MS will have to go multiplatform by next year with this one. I maintain that Games Pass isn't sustainable for new triple A games.
Why hellblade 2 is fine being 9 hours….because Xbox hasn’t had a good game in 10220.011 hours (equivalent of 14 months). :(
Games used to include multiplayer, unique modes, CO op, couch co op modes and unlockables as part of the game. All for a lower price than 70$
The time it takes to beat isn't indicative of the price. The quality of the game is indicative of the price.
For me it's all about the quality. Don't care about amount of content if you give me quality
I like shorter AA games including the original Hellblade (even though the combat was super repetitive for such a short game). I don’t like a 7 minute video that basically serves as an ad for the game.
I have to agree.
I can even imagine playing a 9hrs God of War or The Last of Us.
I think it's something many developers should truly evaluate on. Shorter AAA titles, reducing costs, equal revenues, lesser development time, more games.
Game prices are out of control in the AAA industry.
Has to be mind blowing breathtaking experience to warrant 70$
Here's everything you should know about Ninja Theory's long-awaited sequel.
I know I don’t buy short games until they are very cheap. Yeah yeah I know what the rest will say but I don’t rent games either
Even though it’s a Microsoft exclusive coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC, Cloud, and Game Pass day one, the next chapter in Senua’s Saga is set to be one of the biggest games of the year after it releases on May 21st.
it will be such an unique experience blended with unparalleled realism, visuals and art.
May 21st can´t come soon enough.
"Unique in what way? “Unparalleled realism” in what way?"
If you don´t played the first game you can´t possible understand.
Have we never had realism, visuals and art in games before?
How exactly will this be a 'unique experience', and why do you always have to sound like a salesman?
"it will be such an unique experience"
I agreed here.
"blended with unparalleled realism, visuals and art."
Ah come on, bro.
You can't tell me you're not laughing your ass off when typing such PR babble. You've got to be kidding me if you say otherwise.
Why ... do you do that? What's inside you causing this awkward type of overacting?
I really, really wish you and plenty other die-hard Xbox and Hellblade 2 enthusiasts that this game won't go down as a 65 scored metacritic/opencritic Xbox first party title.
Otherwise hell freezes over then I guess.
@GamerRN
I own the original. Unless it is drastically different from that, I don’t see what so unique. Visuals look fantastic, yes, but not a blowout if the best of the best currently out there. And, it’s doing far less.
I own and have beaten the first game. Yes, the mental health aspects (particularly with headphones) was cool. Outside of that however, I don’t see anything new and unique from it (though I’m sure once it’s out, we’ll have a better idea).
Potentially the best looking game to release? Yep.
I'm keeping my expectations low on this one because I thought the first game was mediocre at best with good-looking graphics. The gameplay had no depth in the first game and I remember doing more walking than fighting in the first game. It has the potential to win graphics of the year though.
Good idea. MS has been doing a banger job at hyping up their games...they don't typically deliver.
It's probably going to be a solid 3/5 game..maybe a 4
I guess we all liked different aspects of the game. I actually wanted a little less fighting so I could concentrate on Senua's psyche.
My fear is exactly that they'll "mainstream" the game and make it more hack'n slash, in detriment of the deep dive into Senua's mind that the first game had.
That headline is the most unfortunate setup for a dig at Xbox, given the lack of games that have warranted even purchasing an Xbox (and that can date back to 2013). It's almost a notable Xbox game by default.
"No they don't"
Really name a 1st party Xbox exclusive that was GotY for Xbox in the last decade? Or that sold 10+ million? So yeah sales and reviews definitely do back it up
I can’t wait to play. I’m also very eager to watch Digital Foundry’s technical analysis of Hellblade 2.
"I can’t wait to play. I’m also very eager to watch Digital Foundry’s technical analysis of Hellblade 2."
Don´t pay some serious attention to that jealous PC fanboy Alex Battaglia, though.
He was caught lying about the original Hellblade in the last video. Lol!
He said he couldn´t understand the combat mechanics and or how it works, if players can dodge, if players can block, he couldn´t tell by the footage that he saw.
Clearly perplexed, Richard had him Interrupted and asked him:
"Sorry, you don´t have a sense of the combat mechanics is that right?"
Which Alex replied:
"I still don´t have a sense of it, no. Because when I look at it a see a number of finishing animations at times... uh... I see what looks like slashing animations which could be from like tapping X or A... I don´t really know... um... which... I just don´t have really good sense of like what the beats and what you´re avoiding and like... are there invulnerability frames or can´t you block? There´s like a lot of things that I just exactly know about the combat yet "
A few minutes later, when a confused John asked: "Have you played most of the original, Alex?"
Alex gagged and responded: "Yeah, I´ve, I´ve beaten it."
John: "Wow! Okay..."
Lmao! MF lied through his teeth!
He couldn´t make a sense of how the entire game works, and yet, he had the balls to claim he´d beat the first game.
What a sad liar! Smdh.
That clown got both Richard and John clearly embarrassed by his clueless comments. Lmao!
https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Are you sure it's that and not his comment about the game looking really soft? I know it wasn't just me but the game looks really soft on some videos. They alluded to the YouTube compression but I am interested to see a proper comparison. How does it look on PC and what can we expect from UE5 on consoles for the rest of the Gen.
I suspect, looking at Immortals of Avian and Remnant 2 and their incredibly low native resolutions that this may be impacting Hellblade 2. However let's hold off judgement until Immortals gets the FSR 3/framegen treatment. I feel like these techs would boost Hellblade up nicely.
Alex Battaglia is a graphics purist. The console currently on the market and the ps5 Pro coming to market simply cannot come anywhere near what PC's are doing right now. Graphics are his passion and he is an enthusiast. Saying he is jealous, what exactly is he jealous of?
His critique is valid. The game is cinematic to a level kinda not seen before in an action game. I'm also very skeptical there will be any meaningfull engaging gameplay at alll. He's digging at the fact the game literally feels like a cutscene. Not like Last of Us or Metal Gear which have a lot of cutscene, the whole games feel like a one-shot cutscene.
I thought the first one was boring. With a update in visuals I'll demo the game through Gamepass to see if the gameplay is better. If it's boring I won't at all feel bad not spending $50 solely on a digital game that I didn't enjoy playing.
I think if you go into it having a rough idea what to expect, it will be good. It’s an experience game. A graphical showpiece. But it’s just by it’s nature not something that will drive a bunch of sales. I feel a little bad for Ninja Theory honestly, there’s all these expectations for this 8 hour story game to pull attention because the lineup is so lean.
"I feel a little bad for Ninja Theory honestly, there’s all these expectations for this 8 hour story game to pull attention because the lineup is so lean."
Lean?
Xbox has best line up of games for 2024 by far!
Hellblade II
Flight Simulator 2024
Starfield: Shattered Space
Avowed
S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2
Indiana Jones
Towerborne
S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2
Since the competition has nothing to compare, all the spotlight will be over Xbox games by default. Hellblade II is set to become one of the best looking games of the current generation and that possibility alone draws a lot of attention for that game.
That said, I´m glad that Ninja Theory has complete creative freedom and all the resources they need to continue and focus on what they do best which is deliver high-quality, over the top experiences through their games with focus on unique themes, realism, sounds, atmosphere, beauty and art.
Definitely one of the best and true unique studio acquired by Phil Spencer. Already excited by Project Mara which might be their next game.
The competition has nothing to compare he says.
Meanwhile
Nintendo and Sony have put out a multitude of bangers and Microsoft hasn't even lifted off the ground. You're as delusional as you are foolish, making this comment in the same year that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Stellar Blade and Helldivers 2 landed on the competition, and Super Mario Bros Wonder released in just October last year which is probably better than 90% of Xbox's line-up.
Besides, Stalker 2 is likely to end up on PlayStation by next year.
@Tody_ZA
Funny how you forgot to mention Foamstars, Rise of the Ronin, and Silent Hill 2 as part of PS5´s gaming line up for this year. I wonder why.
In Nintendo´s case, you had no option but to resort to a Switch game from last year since you don´t even know what Nintendo have in store for 2024, which is nothing big or groundbreaking like a new mainline Mario, Zelda, Pokémon or Metroid.
As far quality goes, I willing to bet that both Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush, two Xbox first party games released this year on PS5, will probably best the vast majority of third party exclusive games released on Playstation this year.
We´ll know for sure soon enough.
that awkward moment:
when you have to double up games on the list to make it seem big
@Obersever Every time you reply you do more harm to yourself than anyone else. Foamstars, Rise of the Ronin and Silent Hill 2 are not or are unlikely to be bangers, which is the topic of conversation here. But hey, thanks for listing more PlayStation games, I guess.
The point, which you always miss because you have both a serious comprehension problem and rampant fanboyism, is that Sony and Nintendo CONSISTENTLY release top tier games, Microsoft does not. That Microsoft now has a busy 2024 does not suddenly disqualify the competition who have brought the goods since the generation started and before.
The reason for bringing up Mario Wonders is that Nintendo released a GOTY title a couple of months ago. You'll break your neck trying to find the last GOTY level title from Xbox on the release calender.
Nintendo and Sony players don't have to meltdown over a lack of announcements until such time that the consistent quality of games declines.
Xbox still has no consistency, no system sellers. What are you trying to argue? That Avowed will move consoles? That Microsoft is finally releasing some games after years of dropping the ball?
Help me out here.
Looks like the most dull and boring titles. Hellblade is a great feature movie but the rest is bland. Let us know when you preorder all of them for 79 bucks.
@Modpeel
"Pentiment and hi fi rush better quality than helldivers 2 and final fantasy 7 rebirth 🫠😳 wow that is some claim there Observer"
No sure what you understood by *the vast majority* in my comments, but Rebirth is a minority.
And yes, both Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment has better quality than Helldivers 2, check it out on Metacritic.
"Rise of the Ronin and Silent Hill 2 are not or are unlikely to be bangers, which is the topic of conversation here. But hey, thanks for listing more PlayStation games, I guess."
What are you on about now? What do you mean by Bangers? None of the games that I´d mentioned in the Xbox list got released yet. And 2024 line ups for any consoles don´t exclude the bad or flopped ones. You try to hide those games because you didn´t wanted to mention them. Shame on you.
"is that Sony and Nintendo CONSISTENTLY release top tier games"
Nintendo I agree. But Sony? Please. Sony had one first party released next and zero first party to be released this year, so you can stop and drag Nintendo into your nonsensical fallacy.
Even PS diehard fans agrees that this is the worst generation in Playstation history. So far, there´s nothing but remakes, remasters, re-releases and cross gen games. If you´re ok all that, more power to you. I rather play actual current gen games, and that´s what Xbox gamers will be getting this year.
"Nintendo and Sony players don't have to meltdown over a lack of announcements until such time that the consistent quality of games declines."
Again, trying to drag Nintendo fans into the mud. We don´t have Nintendo fans on Xbox related topics. Tbh, they couldn´t give a damn about Sony or Microsoft business. They´re happy with what they have.
"Xbox still has no consistency, no system sellers. What are you trying to argue? That Avowed will move consoles? That Microsoft is finally releasing some games after years of dropping the ball?"
Avowed? Hardly. But Indiana Jones most definitely will, just like Starfield did last year:
"Starfield's hotly anticipated launch led to a 46% increase in sales for the standard Xbox Series X during these successful weeks, with the 1TB Series S making up for 20% of sales on the week of September 9."
https://gamerant.com/starfi...
And please, don´t even get me started on Fable, Perfect Dark, Gears 6, TES VI, Blade, Fallout 5, Forza Horizon 6, OD and many many more.
We got the whole generation covered while you don´t even know what first party game will be playing next year. Those are the facts!
Flight Simulator 2024 comes out this year. I can't wait. Hellblade 2 looks fantastic, but I know it's going to be a once and done game for me. I doubt I'd play through a second time.
How about we see the game, play the game, feel the game, and then we can express ourselves on the quality of the game instead of having 100000000000 articles trying to sell us the game as the best thing since slice bread?
What else is there? Some AA games that were being made before acquisition that’s the competition
It looks technically interesting. However if it’s anything like the last Hellblade, it’s the type of game that will appeal to a niche group of psychological horror / linear gameplay enthusiasts looking for something that finally pushes the Series X. It may be one of the biggest “Xbox” games this year, but I don’t expect it to be industry wide with so many incredible games slated through ‘24.
Still doubting they will ever beat the emotional punch in the gut of the first game ending, If felt like a complete experience that didn't need a sequel. But I'm curious to which direction they will take the franchise to, and I'll be playing it on release day.
A great look at the people involved behind the games, could this be gearing up for a Hellblade 2 announcement?
I hope so
Not convinced this will sell all that well. Considering the original game was a timed pa4 and pc exclusive and sold best on ps4 as I understand . It has apparently changed tone and gameplay design plans significantly since then which is a shame.bwe shall see.
Just hearing her voice was enough to give me goosebumps.
Ninja theory did an excellent job with the first Hell Blade! The way they tackled mental illness, and incorporated that into the game’s landscape, dialog, puzzles, and actions balanced with the story was excellent. I would like to see more variety with puzzles though.
The first game was a true sleeper, a well-made game. I hope the sequel does expand on exploration, etc. It's an amazing world, so to keep it simple and linear like the first game will be a disappointment.
