Still no word on expansion storage, unfortunately.

GamerRN31d ago

We have been out for over 6 months and still no expansion options... Thankfully I haven't needed it yet, but as of now, I'm full...

VenomUK31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I thought this was the expansion news! However this is just an update so you can store, but not play, your PS5 games on external storage for easier file management.

@RazzerRedux There was a Bloomberg article that said SSD expansion would come in the summer, it's not confirmation but hopefully this announcement means it's on its way. https://www.bloomberg.com/n...

Also, Share Play sounds like a pretty brilliant features that I need to try out. There have been times I've been stuck and it would be great to share my screen with a friend so they could take control and help me get past the difficult bit - the only problem with using Share Play for this is I haven't got any friends.

darthv7231d ago

This is cool. When I do get a 5 I will be able to plug in my 4 drive and keep playing. No need to reinstall the games on it.

StoneyYoshi31d ago

@GamerRN

Well its a good thing this update came out for a temporary solution when you do need to download something else without deleting others.

CobraKai31d ago

@Darth72. That’s a feature the PS5 could do prior to this update. I was nervous, thinking the PS5 would format my hard drive but no, all the games were there. I don’t need a HDD yet for the PS5 games, but it’s gonna be full what with Returnal and REVII around the corner.

DaBudSmoka31d ago

@darthv72 u can do that regardless of this incoming update.

OG_TK_Cole30d ago

We??? Dont you mean the Sony PlayStation 5 has been out for 6 months now. The only reason I corrected you is because (Not Saying You) a lot of Fanatics on both sides (PlayStation and Xbox) think they are apart of the process that helped design and market these consoles.

Babadook730d ago (Edited 30d ago )

I just use an external drive that automatically gets all my PS4 games. I don't have enough PS5 games to come close to fill the internal yet.

GamerRN25d ago

@OG_TK_COLE

I say we because it's a figure it speech. I'm certainly not a fanatic. I have both systems and enjoy them both.

"As previously announced, the PS5 console will support storage expansion via M.2 drives in the future. We’re currently working on this feature and will keep you posted with any updates on PlayStation Blog."

No news unfortunately, but at least external storage is now a viable option for freeing up space. With 10Gbit/s you can transfer games pretty quickly if you have a high bandwidth external drive.

Pricey31d ago

For Christ sake. How many words would you like.

"As previously announced, the PS5 console will support storage expansion via M.2 drives in the future. We’re currently working on this feature and will keep you posted with any updates on PlayStation Blog."

We... Are... Currently...Working... On .... This ... Feature.

RazzerRedux31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Yeah.....we already knew that. I posted that so folks wouldn't go into the article expecting to see word on internal expansion options.

So what's your problem?

@Pricey

"Still no word is my problem. It implies they haven't said anything.

Had you said nothing new on internal expansion options. There wouldn't be an issue."

Let me get this straight. You are butthurt because I said "no word" rather than "nothing new"?

LOL

Pricey31d ago

Still no word is my problem. It implies they haven't said anything.

Had you said nothing new on internal expansion options. There wouldn't be an issue.

Pricey31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I'm disappointed that despite the fact you take it upon yourself to read for us all what we are quite able to read ourselves. You are still unable to articulate correctly, which inturn propogates misinformation. If your going to be patronising at least have the decency to be correct.

I just keep deleting stuff off my drive, but I wonder if manufacturing issues are so dire right now that they can't even produce copies of their own internal for expansion because of manufacturing issues or possibly component issues (Switch is having semiconductor material issues apparently).

RazzerRedux31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I haven't had a problem with storage so far. But I don't keep a lot of games installed at one time. Not even on my PC. Either way, I think you are right that factories are having a hard time keeping up these days.

ziggurcat30d ago

I haven't had to delete anything yet, but I've also not been very active on my console since January. I also had to unplug my external because I ran into the symptoms people were reporting about the console crashing, etc...one of the instances deleted more than half of the content from the external HDD, so I have been afraid to plug it back in since. I haven't seen anything confirming that they fixed that issue, either, so hopefully this update means I can plug my external back in.

glennhkboy30d ago

According to a lot of reports in the last 6 months, it is the heat from the internal SSD expansion slot that is keeping Sony from "certify" any existing SSD for that internal slot.

victorMaje31d ago

It'll come.
In the meantime I think the PS5 external storage is the next best thing, & it's what I was hoping for at least as a first step towards the M.2 expansion. I have enough space left on my external & would have hated having to delete & re-download PS5 games. Imo this update is right on time, I have about 150GB left in my internal storage I suspect by June even less, now I don't have to worry about space or having to buy an M.2 expansion until later.

Petebloodyonion31d ago

According to Gamespot, you will be able to store your game on an external HD like Xbox.
You won't be able to directly download from the store to your Hard drive nor play the game from it but you will still be able to free some space from your SSD.
https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

At least it's a step in the right direction :)

Jin_Sakai30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

“PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage.”

Why Sony? This isn’t ideal.

MIDGETonSTILTS1730d ago (Edited 30d ago )

I bet SSDs are gonna be crazy more expensive for ps5 vs the SSD options for SX, and they don’t want to reveal that difference until more people commit to ps5.

I’m cool with it, I believe in Cerny’s decision to make the SSD a priority over the GPU. Let’s see what 5gb/sec uncompressed reading speeds can deliver in terms of gaming experiences 🤙

RazzerRedux30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

Actually, there are SSDs available that are already cheaper than the proprietary SSD for SX and significantly faster.

I'm not even close to filling the built I'm SSD yet - I have about 480gb free - but I too would like some information on when and how we can expand this. More storage is always welcome

RaidenBlack31d ago

Progress.
When I read the title, I immediately thought, "Finally, NVMe expansion!"
But anyways, getting the missing 'Store PS5 Games on Compatible External USB Drives' update is still a much needed important addition.

SullysCigar31d ago

Definitely, I'll take this step in the interim.

Knushwood Butt31d ago

'If you want to use a USB extended storage drive that you were previously using with your PS4 console, simply connect it to your PS5 console. You'll be able to access any PS4 games on the drive.'.

This is pretty cool.

RyanDJ31d ago

Are they claiming that PS4 games on PS5 via an external drive is a new feature? I've been doing that ever since I unboxed mine.

StoneyYoshi31d ago

"This is pretty cool."

This is nothing new to the PS5. Been that way since Day 1. PS5 games being cold stored on external storage is whats new here.

rpgenius42031d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Yeah I wish they had it since day 1 like series X, but great addition none the less.

Hellcat202031d ago

It's progress but godamn I need internal expansion storage space
I'm going to have to delete a bunch of games to make room for the new ones coming in the next few months

StoneyYoshi31d ago

Or... you could get an external drive to cold store the games so you don't need to delete. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hellcat202031d ago

I have the 4Tb hooked up to my ps5 that I had on my pro that is already 93% full

Neonridr30d ago

you still have to transfer them over. Sure that might save a minute at the end of the day, but it's still not a proper solution.

StoneyYoshi31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

"I have the 4Tb hooked up to my ps5 that I had on my pro that is already 93% full"

😳You download everything in your library or something? Im assuming you have a data cap for your internet? I cant imagine how much you are willing to fork over for a M.2 drive for your PS5 to future proof storage if you have 4 TB almost full on external storage just for PS4 titles alone. On the bright side... Next-Gen games aren't expected to be nearly as large as most titles available now so this might not be as necessary to have 4Tb of expanded internal storage but you've already surprised me once lol.

Hellcat202031d ago

It doesn't take very many games to fill 4Tb
I have 212 games downloaded some are big like the Battlefield and CoD games and other big titles from Batman to Destiny and the Division games

My ps5 can only hold about 18 games
I have 7 more already preordered in the next 3-4 months for ps5
And 3 for my ps4

Ron_Danger30d ago

“It doesn’t take very many games to fill 4Tb”

Next line:

“ I have 212 games downloaded” which is “93%” of your hard drive...

Sounds like it actually takes a lot to fill it

Sayai jin31d ago

Good, first major. Almost 5 months post launch and still no mention on expanded storage.

Pricey31d ago

It says right in the article that it's currently being worked on.

Sayai jin31d ago

Let me clarify my point. 5 months post launch and still no solution for expanded storage. Should have been there at launch. We already knew it was being worked on months ago.

badz14930d ago

@Sayai jin

not trying to make excuses for Sony here but Mark Cerny announced during the reveal that the PS5 will be able to accept any NVMe drive that has at least 7GBps read speed. even if they make that feature available at launch, there is barely any off the shelf drive that has that kind of speed when the PS5 launched last November. even right now, only 3 NVMe on the market that claims to do up to 7000MBps read speed and they cost $200 for 1TB.

Sayai jin30d ago

@bad149, Yes, Cerny did make that announcement. My overall point is that Sony should have had that feature baked in and ready to go. That would also mean they would have needed to be working with SDD manufacturers to have the tech available at the same time. There was simply no need for them to push that tech through if Sony didn't have there tech ready.

Unfortunately, it is going to be a little pricey to buy those SSD at start. They will still cost around $150-200 when Sony finally launches the feature.

I mean they just enabled the feature to use USB storage. That is unacceptable. A little off topic, but these are some of the reasons why I think both consoles could have been launched at the start of 2021.

marinelife931d ago

Still checking for availability. Starting to lose hope it might be a while.

OMGitzThatGuy30d ago

Next time there is a direct, like today, download the chrome extension SessionBox. Since PS Direct is cookie based, multiple tabs won't help but sessionbox makes every tab use separate cookies so you can have as many tabs open as possible for many entries. Finally used it today and got picked within 5 minutes and 4 times overall, only bought 1 though. Don't use too many tabs though as you have to keep up with captchas for a while.
