Housemarque discussion with Narrative Director - Gregory Louden, on the storytelling in Returnal and the driving forces behind Selene's story.
The WellPlayed team has come together to share which video games they’d like to see turned into a TV show.
Digital Foundry : 2022 and now 2023 have been rough years for AAA game release quality, with many games releasing in an unfinished, broken state - particularly on PC. We recently reported on big improvements to The Last of Us Part 1 on PC, so we decided to go back, revisiting four of the most contentious releases we've reviewed recently. How long does it take to fix a PC game? Do they actually get fixed at all? Of course, the truth is that the situation is different on a game by game basis. Some games have only had minor tweaks, and of the four we tested, only one has addressed the foundational problems we highlighted in our initial review.
What is it about cult games that makes them what they are? Is it luck or is there some quality they all share? If there is, perhaps we can identify it and use it to find and predict the classics of the future.
Both great games.
System Shock remake seems like it’s been in development forever but I hope it’s made well and doesn’t feel too dated.
I haven’t played it in a long long time it was almost 20 years ago when I was also a PC gamer.
Returnal is also an amazing game. Great fast paced fun and the world , story and atmosphere with top notch gameplay.
Definitely recommend Returnal and if you haven’t played the original System Shock games I’d recommend trying to the remake I have it preordered.
Returnal was very good technically but had it not been a souls like I think it could have been incredible.
There is fun to be had with Returnal and it is a very challenging game that rewards perfection. I haven't completed it as yet and I would not recommend anyone pay full price for this game.
It is simply not for everyone especially when there are plenty of other great PS5 games out there. The problems I have with it is that the story is cryptic and it is a rouge like not a souls game. If you die and don't have any special items in your inventory to give you a second chance, you have to start from the first level. There is no respawning at the last bonfire.
There should be a mode in this game to make it less of a rouge like where you can spawn like the From Software games to make it more accessible instead of losing all your loot and progress.
Not that I am hating on the genre because I enjoyed Risk of rain 2 and Wizard of Legend. What made those games great is that even though they were rouge like, the length of the game is reasonable. Returning feels like a full length game with rouge like elements. A mistake in my opinion.
Eck... I just cant justify $69.99 for a base version of any game, especially knowing that a price hike isnt going to eliminate DLC or microtransaction costs, theyre gonna happen anyway to nickel and dime customers. Thats NOT customer service or consumer advocacy. Im really having to learn patience this generation waiting for price drops to $39.99 instead so developers will lose a significant amount, on me anyway. But that doesnt mean Im not talking to people and telling them they should consider doing the same because I do.
Jim Ryan, I dont know why youre running PlayStation. Probably because a Japanese man turned it down knowing how political things were getting and you thought it would be a good idea. So Jim Ryan, let me tell you why YOU SUCK as a salesman:
1) You announced PSVR 2 while PS5 sales are suffering. You cant ADAPT. You only know black and white, theres a business plan you feel you have to stick too. What this demonstrates is that you dont care about your consumers, and thats sad. Jack Tretton was the man, he knew, he cared. But you announced VR2 while another even larger elephant stands in the room.
2) Whatve you done to fight back against scalpers? Its that simple, you tell retailers that consoles need to be sold the old fashioned way, in their stores where people can get in a line and not have to compete with software, and if distributers care about their customers as much as they claim to during this epidemic, theyll agree and sell them from store locations like the good old days. But what are you doing? Sitting on your butt drinking tee and taking two hour long lunch breaks.
3) The Show 21. Not only does Microsoft now have your game on their console but theyre practically giving it away for free on Game Pass while PlayStation consumers that have stuck by you and the franchise for as many years arent paying the Xbox price for games $59.99, but ten dollars more at $69.99 for the same game now and Microsoft still claims it plays best on Xbox having a more powerful console.
4) You have no idea what talent you really have. Jack Tretton did. Phil Harrison may have discovered Media Molecule, but Jack Tretton was on top of it and acquired them. He also did the same for Sucker Punch studio and made sure he took care of what he had. He almost lost Hideo Kojima to Don Mattrick, this is true, but he didnt. Youve let Quantic Dream slip away and youre about to lose other great talent to the competition when your exclusivity deal with Ember Labs dries up meaning youll lose excellent developers of Pixar and Disney quality to Nintendo that would really love to have them and Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Microsoft would love them to, but Microsoft wants anything Sony has because Phil Spencer has no eye for talent but once he can talk to them, he just might be smart enough to acquire them. Somehow he managed to get Yakuza after Sony spent several console generations keeping a solid relationship with SEGA and just like that, Phil Spencer took them all and is giving them away for free on Xbox Game Pass.
Jim Ryan, you SUCK ya filthy red-coat!
