PS3 Owners Facing Wide-Spread Problems Downloading Games Ahead of PS Store Closure

Sony is shutting down the PlayStation 3’s storefront on 2nd July, and that’s prompted many to fire up their last-last-gen console in order to make a few purchases before it’s gone forever. While you’ll still be able to download any titles that you’ve picked up in the past, the closure of the PS Store will mean that there are numerous games you won’t be able to buy ever again, as they never received a physical release.

Of course, with so many scrambling to complete their digital software collections, there’s increased emphasis on PS3’s storefront right now – and it’s not holding up particularly well. The web is absolutely ablaze with users complaining about two very specific errors: 80029509 and 80029721. These codes appear when trying to download software, whether it’s a new purchase or something older from the user’s download list.

And this is exactly why I love emulation. For older games that are hard to access.

Jin_Sakai1119d ago

Or just support BC like Microsoft is doing.

Silly gameAr1119d ago (Edited 1119d ago )

@JIn
Or how Sony did before BC was all the craze. But we forget that.

Sony, supported BC without the internet and updates? Nah. Lets forget that.

Orchard1119d ago

@Silly gameAr

So why are they not supporting it today? and haven't done so properly in almost 15 years... That just makes it even worse if they were first to do it...

HankHill1119d ago

The shills on this site say that nobody cares about old games anymore as they buy Demon's Souls on PS5, a remake of a old PS3 game.

sle7enn1119d ago (Edited 1119d ago )

Exactly, this would literally solve everything and yet they dont. I mainly play on PlayStation and pc (mainly because Xbox games are on pc) but I’m a fan of all 3 consoles and PC so take that for what’s it’s worth

sle7enn1119d ago (Edited 1119d ago )

@silly

And what about currently? They don’t. Oh I forgot It’s a paid service based on your connection speed. Listen, I’m a huge fan of PS but this is unacceptable. Just to be clear, I’m talking about BC not the fact that the Sony store is shutting down, if you haven’t purchased the games yet then you probably shouldn't now. When they start talking about not being able to download said purchased games any longer (that I should own for life and outright) then we will have a big problem Sony

1119d ago
porkChop1119d ago

@Silly

Sony supporting BC in the past doesn't matter at all because they *aren't* doing it now.

MrNinosan1119d ago

Not even 5% of Xbox games are playable on my Series X.
And about 10% on X360 games.

Microsoft pretend to have BC, but in reality its just talking.

And why are peoplr crying about BC all the time? It's 2021, isnt it enough playong games from the last 8 years as we can do on both PS5 and Series X?

Me personally have no reason playing games 10 years old, and if I really had to do it, a PS1, PS2, PS3, Xone or X360 can all be found under 50$.

People still debate this only because of fanboys.

If you ask any Sony-fanboy, none cares.
If you asl any MS-fanboy, all cares.

annoyedgamer1119d ago

Emulation on PC is better if Microsoft decides to shut that down, you lose everything.

PitbullMonster1119d ago

@HankHill
Nobody would play Demon's souls with the original graphis and animation on a ps5. The Remake has one of the best graphics ive ever saw and thats one reason why i bought it.

MadLad1119d ago

@sillygamer

Yet again trying to spin a negative look on Sony.
Sony spent the last two generations trying to resell you your old games via a digital store or through remasters.
Sony had basic BC via the PS2, and on the PS3 ... until they found it more profitable to, again, sell emulated versions on their store, or remasters at retail.

MS is the only one of the big three to consistently support BC for years. Even spending out of pocket to update past releases, of which you can enjoy via the same disc you bought years ago.

Nah though. sillygamar likes to forget about that. :^)

neomahi1119d ago

Did anyone ever tell you youre a tool? Did it ever occur to you Sony are more interested in the looking toward the future and not living in the past? Anyone can buy a replacement console any time they want and seeing as how most people are bootlegging games these days anyway.

Id say just go buy and Xbox if BC is your thing but, I guess you already did that so live in the past playing old games on the Worlds Most Power and underutilyzed console and we'll live in the future then.

Imalwaysright1118d ago

HankHill

It surprises me to see this type of behaviour on a website dedicated to gaming but then again those useless shills care more about licking Sony's ass than gaming.

InUrFoxHole1118d ago

@SillyGamer
Why forget that? Unless you're just being salty? Why not just support BC for all gens?

NotoriousWhiz1118d ago

BC is great, but that's not the issue. The cost of keeping the store up should be minimal. And at the very least, they can merge it into the PS5 store (web version at least) so you can purchase games from all generations in one spot.

GottaBjimmyb1118d ago (Edited 1118d ago )

@mrnino "Not even 5% of Xbox games are playable on my Series X.
And about 10% on X360 games."

Ok, you are just pulling numbers out of thin air, because that is just not true. There are 4500+ back compat games, stop with the BS

https://i.imgur.com/nO8SGlY...

MrNinosan1118d ago

@Gottabjimmyb

Sad to see it was even less then.
You know that in those 4500 games, Xbox One is included.

In thay case, PS5 also has more than 4500 games.

Sort on Xbox and X360 and you'll quickly notice my numbers were even kind from the perspective of MS Eyes.

GottaBjimmyb1118d ago (Edited 1118d ago )

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/...

3161

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/...

26% of x360

There are 577 games that have been made backward compatible out of 2154 that have been released for Xbox 360.

In either case 577 games vs 0. Technically about 15-20 they have rereleased and resell that aren't full price remasters. However 0 of those allow you to play by inserting the disc you own or digital purchase from PS3 or earlier, xbox allows that for all. Not perfect, but to downplay a completely incomparable improvement is just fanboy ranting. PC obviously puts both to shame.

Emulation isn't the same as natively playing.

Orchard1119d ago

Sure beats not playing at all though.

jivah1118d ago (Edited 1118d ago )

Breath of the Wild says hi.. oh and with better visuals.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Giblet_Head1118d ago

Of course not, it's better. The software isn't limited by dated hardware.

iplay1up21118d ago

Yeah, sure. That and the fact you are playing games for free, and illegally.

frostypants1118d ago

Finding emulated versions of games that never had a physical release will likely be more challenging.

Really sucks for that poor Vita developer that was in the process of releasing a new game.

Majin-vegeta1119d ago

No problems on my end.Been downloading a bunch of free items all day

mkis0071119d ago

You dont need to download them...all you need to do is purchase them...

Iceball20001119d ago

Don’t know why you got disagrees. Sony has said you can still download once store is closed. You just need to have them purchased.

HankHill1119d ago

Are you illiterate? The article's title literally says people can't download games right now.

arkard1119d ago

Errors happen, they will get fixed. If Xbox goes down should I post a doom and gloom articles saying how I can't download or play any games at all?

sle7enn1119d ago (Edited 1119d ago )

@hankhill

Hey uhh Hank, you are pulling a Bobby right now man. I would re read what they are talking about. They are not talking about the article, they are talking about long term

Dirtnapstor1118d ago

Iceball is correct. You can download any game you've ever purchased from your Transaction List within your account settings at any point in time. Why is this so hard to comprehend???
So who cares if there are server errors at the moment, the system's jammed up I'm sure. That will be remedied. As long as you can purchase, you're good to go.

Since I began with my online business, I am raking $42.4 every fifteen minutes. And, as unbelievable it sounds, doable for you is, as well, cause I’ve never had a job as easy as this one. Everyone can do it, with no exception. I suggest you, Don’t pass-up this hot chance, which you can do even in your spare time for some extra bonus bucks to your main source of income, because you might regret it afterwards. Anyway, here’s what you have to do to get started …... https://is.gd/tNxO7H

Majin-vegeta1118d ago

Are you going through the actual Pan store?

Teflon021118d ago

Because a bunch of goofs think they're losing all their PSN games and downloading them. It's going to be a mess. They love sending doom and gloom for PS without the proper info and make people think things are so bad.

thejigisup1117d ago

@majin-vegeta, I'm going through the transaction history on the ls3 amd attempting through the web browser on my pc both are having issues. MvC2 was delisted so you csnt just search in the store unfortunately. I think they should have left it in the store for people that have purchased.

ManMarmalade1119d ago

Just do BC and release older titles from ps1 and ps2 as cheap bundles (digitally or physically or both). They can easily sell genre-specific game bundles at a fair price and it would solve a lot of problems.

frostypants1118d ago (Edited 1118d ago )

BC for the PS3 is difficult because the architecture was so unconventional. Though I'd imagine the PS5 could handle the required overhead.

ManMarmalade1118d ago (Edited 1118d ago )

I thought the architecture was difficult for it to make PS3 games, not the BC. My PS3 plays PS1 games but not PS2 games.

frostypants1118d ago (Edited 1118d ago )

@ManMarmalade my launch PS3 plays PS2 games but early PS3s literally had PS2 hardware built into them to do that. Later PS3s had software emulation for PS2 but it was hit and miss. But yeah, all this goes to the weird architecture. Even high end PCs had a hard time emulating PS3 games for a long time.

PS5 handles PS4 so cleanly because they're both x86 systems. None of the PS systems before that were.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies9h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken5h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing6920h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker20h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6920h ago(Edited 20h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt8h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken5h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos1d 2h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto1d 1h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger881d 1h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies15h ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.
