Resident Evil Village: First-Ever PS4 Pro Gameplay (4K)

IGN : If you're curious to see what Resident Evil Village looks like on current-gen consoles - the PS4 and Xbox One versions were a surprise announcement at January's Resident Evil Showcase after RE8 was originally announced as a next-gen exclusive - check out the first-ever gameplay footage of the game running on a PS4 Pro.

Ugh. Why hold this game back for consoles where it isn't going to sell? And no "but the install base" and "115 million" don't matter. Look at how Hitman 3 bombed on PS4 compared to PS5. And this one will worse because even more people have moved over to PS5 now.

--Onilink--1113d ago

How exactly did it bomb on PS4? Last time I saw anything about H3 sales PS4 accounted for like 25% of them, thats still 50% of the entire sales on PS5, why on earth would you easily sacrifice that amount of sales from a business perspective ?

JEECE1113d ago

On PS4 it was number 17 on the US PSN chart in January, and didn't chart at all in Europe, while on PS5 it was number 2 in both regions.

And you would do that because making the move to be true PS5/Series X/S game will get a greater amount of hype around the game, and make it sell better on those platforms. People still talk about Dead Rising--whidh was never better than mediocre--becasue the first one came out only on 360 even when the PS2 had a massive install base. If that had been a PS2 game just upscaled for 360 (which is what a lot of multiplats were in that year when 360 was out but PS3 wasn't), it would have been forgotten in a year.

Also, you save money on the development side, because you only make the game for the current gen consoles. For this they also had to develop for PS4, One S, PS4 Pro, and One X.

--Onilink--1113d ago

The position in the chart is not relevant to say it bombed or not. PS4 sales amounted to 50% of the sales on PS5, that is in no way an insignificant number.

Not to mention there are also plenty of examples of games that were released on next gen (at the time) only and completely failed

JEECE1113d ago

I agree that chart position isn't as good as numbers, but we don't have digital numbers, so charts are the best we can do. Those numbers you cite are UK physical sales (which alone refute the notion that games sell better on the older, larger install base), so that is part of the picture, but we can see by looking at the digital charts and the fact that Hitman 3 sold well below some very old games that it did not do well digitally on PS4. So the idea that it sold half as well as the PS5 version almost certainly overestimates its sales.

Also, I'm not saying Hitman shouldn't have been cross gen, I'm using that to show how marked the drop off in last gen was even when PS5 had only been out for 2 months. By the time RE Village comes out, it will have been out for almost six, so the disparity is only going to increase (look up how MGS V bombed on PS3/360 if you don't believe how bad this is going to get).

JEECE1113d ago

Outside of super mainstream games (like RE is mainstream, but I'm talking about COD/Madden/Fifa mainstream), sales of new games on old consoles drop off once new consoles are out, even disproportionate to the number of people who have moved on to the new console.

Gran Turismo 6 is a great example of this. It came out just after PS4 launched, so at a time when PS3's install base was almost to its total and barely anyone had PS4s yet. Despite that, the game still sold only about half of what Gran Turismo 5 sold on a smaller install base a few years earlier.

neomahi1113d ago

Because the PS5 isnt selling like it could/should be because of scalpers. Jim Ryan shouldve had consoles shipped to stores like theyve always done, dropped the ball on that one so, part of the reason youre seeing this but, looks just fine to me.

Orchard1113d ago (Edited 1113d ago )

Feels weird to be seeing this gameplay on PS4 and not the 5...

Looks good though - but so did RE7.

Om4ever1113d ago

More than good... I could not tell the difference with the ps5 version

RaidenBlack1113d ago

I disagree mate. The differences are quite stark.

Hellcat20201113d ago

I think the only difference from the pro to the ps5 will be 30fps-60fps
Both will be checkerboard 4k

Orchard1112d ago

@neutralgamer1992 Totally. The RE2/3 remake look immense on the last gen consoles, and 7 + Village look great too.

northpaws1113d ago

Honestly this is the problem of BC, when developers can release games that work on multiple generations for maximum profits, they have less incentive to make next gen only games. The biggest jumps in quality only happens when you can completely ignore previous generations, and even more so if it is an exclusive.

My preferred console of choice is PS5, when the PS5 only games start to drop, it will be insane, but I genuinely hope there will be Xbox Series X exclusives too, I still don't get why they decided to hold themselves back with XSS right off the gate.

ManMarmalade1113d ago

I have no idea what you're talking about. Capcom has been on a roll with their games the past couple of years.

Highrevz1113d ago

Nothings been held back yet, in time we will see but for now that’s not the case.

Is this game held back because of PS4/Xbox One Or is it more likely to run but not very well. This is how it will be for the Series S.

If develops don’t want to put time into working on the series S version then it will release playable but not optimised, PS5 and Xbox series X will be as intended.

iplay1up21112d ago (Edited 1112d ago )

XSS was a stupid idea! It has a decent amount of power, and should be able to play games at 720p and keep up with Series X, but why? Microsoft should have done a digital only version with the same specs as Series X. 720p this gen is unacceptable, especially when Microsoft promised 1080p.

FlavorLav011112d ago

Actually, MS promised 1440p with the SeriesS and yet its stuck running old games at 720p and 900p just to hit 60fps. Series S is a stinker in my book, considering what it’s sitting on the shelves next to...

I wish Capcom would upgrade Resident Evil7 to be playable on PSVR2.

babadivad114d ago

I said I was gonna try PSVR this time around but I still haven't forced myself to take the plunge yet.

Babadook7114d ago (Edited 114d ago )

Do it when you have the time space and money. Think it through. It’s so worth it though.

The_Hooligan114d ago

I am thinking about purchasing PSVR2. I tried the headset and it felt comfortable even with me wearing glasses but it was only for like 15 mins. I didn't try it for a long time. So the only thing keeping me hesitant about making the jump to VR is not knowing how it would feel wearing glasses and playing VR for like an hour or two. Also, have you tried playing non-VR games with the headset. Meaning can you play spiderman with the headset. I know it won't be in VR but can you still use the headset to play regular games. Just curious to know what that is like.

Babadook7114d ago (Edited 114d ago )

@The_Hooligan

I don't really recommend non VR games in the headset. It's much more blurry than even a 1080p screen I would say. Although it does work.

As someone who did wear glasses in VR and also struggled with the sweet spot a bit, I recommend getting HonsVR prescription lenses and especially the Globular Cluster comfort mod to help comfort and keeping the sweet spot.

Thanks so much for the info. Much appreciated. Happy gaming! 😊

Jingsing114d ago (Edited 114d ago )

Same, I bought PSVR1 and pretty much every AAA studio took a shot at making games for it but on PSVR2 it is just Sony and a sea of indie Quest ports which doesn't justify a premium $550 tag. I really want to play more VR but most of the software is pure garbage. I wouldn't even get $550 dollars worth of entertainment if you go by the dollar per hour metric for fun, it just isn't there. the few good games on it might get you close to 100 if you are hardcore.

I think Sony should have made their headset standalone with comparable or better power than the Quest. That would have gotten rid of the PS5 entry price and got non PS players involved too. But an added premium feature could have been to go wired with a PS5 if you have one for those few premium AAA games that can only run on a PS5.

EvertonFC114d ago (Edited 114d ago )

Loads of awesome games , if you ONLY think a few titles good games are out then VR was never for you.
The problem is gamers think every game released would have a VR hybrid version and that's the gamers 1st mistake.
VR2 is about a year old and I have over 20 games I really enjoy and put plenty of hours into.

EvertonFC114d ago

"force yourself".

That right there is WHY you shouldn't bother.
I love VR but if your going to force yourself then you are already going into VR negatively.

ChasterMies114d ago

Winter is a good time to try PSVR2. I just look outside and I’m ready to strap on a headset and stand uncomfortably for an hour.

1nsomniac114d ago

As a launch day owner in its current state it’s not worth it unfortunately. Almost a year later and it’s still missing even the most very basic of features. And it seems to be pretty dead on arrival. It has great promise but as usual it was ditched out the door by Sony.

Abnor_Mal114d ago

Just curious to know what basic features PSVR2 is still missing?

1nsomniac112d ago

You can’t even watch 3D videos on it. I mean seriously it’s a VR headset and it can’t watch VR movies!

It sounds more and more stupid each time I even hear myself say it. Imagine designing it that way! It’s absolutely insane that something that basic is missing. That’s VR 101, literally every other headset starts with that basic function. PSVR2 STILL can’t even do that!

Yeah that’s a strange one. Maybe they don’t like racing games.

Abnor_Mal114d ago

There’s so many PSVR games that need an upgrade to PSVR2, the cumbersome Move controllers did limit the enjoyment of some games.

darthv72114d ago

i just recently found that i could use the move gun attachments for rush of blood and that made a huge difference in playability. I only wish that was upgraded to the VR2 along with Vader immortal.

Abnor_Mal114d ago

I have to rehook my camera for PSVR, and attach that adapter thing they gave away and give it a try, headset is packed away at the moment.

If gamers ONLY like 10% of my list you have your answer, DONT buy VR. I find my list to be a great 1st year for VR2 personally and I find it even crazier how YouTube content creators and gamers shite all over VR2 when its been a great year.

darthv72114d ago

Beat Sabre is definitely better on VR2 compared to VR1. Same with Thumper and Rez infinite.
