Jason Hill writes: "In the hard-fought console war, shoot-'em-ups are on the front line, with Sony's Resistance 2 battling Microsoft's Gears of War 2 this Christmas. But there is little between them: both offer thrilling, roller-coaster campaigns with varied pacing and extensive multiplayer modes.

Resistance developer Insomniac has made changes to the solo campaign, including moving the action from Europe to 1950s America and telling the story through the glowing eyes of gruff protagonist Nathan Hale. But not all the alterations are welcome, with a disappointingly simplified health system and a two-weapon carrying limit reducing tactical options while telegraphing coming enemy types.
