Reports suggest that Xbox Live is being renamed to Xbox Network, which is similar to what Sony PlayStation calls their online service.
Shouldn’t the “network” part be capitalized?
Probably means it’s not being rebranded, they’re just dropping the Live brand and replacing it with something generic. Would be a shame to see it go, but if it means dropping the subscription fee as well then it’s a good thing I suppose.
They’re probably going to drop games with gold and focus entirely on GamePass.
Playstation has been called network (as in PSN) forever now. I wonder how that sits with Playstation. Imagine PlayStation changing their name to PlayStation Live. Who would have thought.
Xbox live sounds better imo. PlayStation network coulda been more creative. Not that I can come.up.witj anything better. I'm also not a creative person
I like the sound of Xbox network, god I remember playstation network, I still have the black internet box you had to screw on with a coin and the playstation network disc lol Doubt it's worth anything now but just kept it for memory's.
Network? I thought Xbox live works just as good tbh.
Let's hope it isn't related to that inevitable price hike.
we have been through this...
I still think gold will be scrapped and online will become free. Once there attachment rate for gamepass is where they want it that is.
Yeah there is no reason not to have gamepass If you play on Xbox. Even the people that don’t play online sub to that. It would be an awesome move if that plays out.
People said that MS were going to make XBL free for months (I thought that was laughable) and then they tried to double the price of Gold to $120. That should have been a reality check. MS is a corporation and Gold is extremely profitable. They're not going to burn an existing revenue stream if they don't have to. Think about it logically. They won't make more money back by not charging for Gold (this fact is as true now as it was decade ago). Their audience are already willing to pay for it, and it's not hindering them getting a large audience to sub to GamePass.
They'd drop Gold for Gamepass Ultimate being the main way to get Gold before they make online free to play. They still need paid online, Gamepass is not profitable for them.
I prefer xbox live, tbh. Xbox network sounds very corporate. Once they change the name they will try to charge 20 bucks a month for gamepass.
that's so random LOL
This is kind of sad, being a subscriber since the service premiered in 2002. The name is classic! But I understand that company decisions tend not to rely on the sentimentality of their customers, so it's all right. When you think about it, Xbox Live is kind of a weird name anyways. I think it's like the Wii. At a certain point, we just stopped thinking of it as a weird name and just accepted it as part of the vernacular of social discourse.
If anyone else has worked with Microsoft online services like Azure your probably all to familiar with how frequently and sometimes frustratingly (cough intune cough) Microsoft changes it's product names. So MS changing a name to a product isn't a shock it's more surprising to see the name Xbox Live last from it's inception to 2021 outside of windows i don't think i recall a MS product name sticking around so long. Normally it comes with a alteration like pricing and sometimes when the planets align you get some premium features for free obviously gold has been a cash cow since the mid 2000s so who knows if they will actually drop the sub fee.
I always thought Xbox Live was a cool name, they should keep it but I get the rebranding if it coincides with a re-launch of what the service is
Apparently it’s confirmed according to verge, https://www.theverge.com/20...
