We have to pay to use Dolby Atmos? Learn something new everyday I guess.

Amplitude1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

Only for headphones. If you have a surround sound receiver that supports it then it's free on both Windows and Xbox.

But yeah it's absolutely ridiculous lol

julia12121504d ago

Since I began with my online business, I am raking $42.4 every fifteen minutes. And, as unbelievable it sounds, doable for you is, as well, cause I’ve never had a job as easy as this one. Everyone can do it, with no exception. I suggest you, Don’t pass-up this hot chance, which you can do even in your spare time for some extra bonus bucks to your main source of income, because you might regret it afterwards. Anyway, here’s what you have to do to get started …... https://is.gd/tNxO7H

fr0sty1504d ago

This is just... dumb. My phone has atmos for free.

anubusgold1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

You dont need that crap you just need a good pair a headphones and a great amp and dac the sound quality would be better. All this crap is just stereo sound with simulated surround . I can hear enemies in 360 degrees with high and low detection just fine with my topping 50 DAC and JDS labs atom amp and my AKG k712 pros, HD650 and beyerdynamic DT770 headphones

darthv721504d ago

I wonder if we have to pay for dolby vision too?

Dolby holds patents on almost all sound features and they really want people to know that. It costs $$ to get that little stamp of approval on everything that supports it.

Amplitude1504d ago

Oh I'm sure there's a cost added the the manufacturing of surround sound receiver and soundbars with atmos. That's cool - it's their tech aha. If they charged, say, Sony to use Atmos in Sony headphones and that caused Sony headphones to be $30 more I'm cool with that.

Making the customer pay a monthly fee to use something that their hardware already supports is super lame though

fr0sty1504d ago

The developer has to pay dearly for the license and hardware required, which is why few will bother.

Neonridr1504d ago

my TV (LG) supports it, I don't pay anything on top to LG to use Dolby Vision. I wonder why we would have to pay here for the case of the headphones.

shabz6661504d ago

You can opt out and use windows sonic built into the Xbox for free instead.

Profchaos1504d ago

Windows sonic is great I've been using it on PC for years no major loss imo

anubusgold1503d ago

Windows sonic sounded bad to me when i turned it on sound quality went way down when i used it.

gravedigger1504d ago

This is absolutely horrendous. LOL.

CobraKai1504d ago

Wait up. Another subscription? If the Windows one sounds just as good, then really you’re just paying for the Dolby stamp.

DarkkMinion1504d ago

WTF are you talking about?? What subscription? Is a license fee of $14.99 and that's it.

CobraKai1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

@DarkkmMonion so you’re paying $15 for a license. If the Windows one sounds just as good, then really you’re just paying for the Dolby stamp.

Profchaos1504d ago

Yeah it's why ps5 went with their own proprietary audio configuration that and years upon years of audio Knowledge from their other business streams made it a no brainer I'm sure. They were quoted saying they didn't want to pass on the licensing fees for something like Atmos

gamer78041504d ago

Weird I bought it a while ago and only paid once. If you have to pay monthly just use Windows sonic instead.

LOGICWINS1504d ago

.......this is ridiculous. Stupid move by Microsoft.

badz1491504d ago

with the trillion dollar money their fanboys keep bragging about and how $7bil acquisition of Zenimax is a strategic move by MS, not including a one time $15 license with this $100 headset is kinda baffling IMO.

alb18991504d ago

Dolby Atmos Is a software and it just cost like 14 dollars, it isn't MS property.

annoyedgamer1504d ago

Since when? Last I checked I had to buy new speakers to experience Atmos. Now I need a subscription too?

alb18991504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

A product that is certify Atmos have paid for that certifcation so the price of that speakers already has the cost. MS is just giving options because not everyone is interested on Atmost so why everyone should pay for it?

porkChop1504d ago

Microsoft can't force Dolby to give the software for free, so I'm not sure what you were expecting.

Livingthedream1504d ago

Yup, can't expect MS to pay for the license; however, a six month trial is nice so you know if it's worth the $15

Sayai jin1504d ago

It has MS name on it so, you know how this site works.

CobraKai1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

I think because for decades we’ve been getting Dolby Digital included with every iteration of Xbox we naturally expected Atmos to be included like it would with a UHD Blu Ray player. This extra licensing is the prolly the reason why PS and Xbox started to create their own spatial sound.

Sayai jin1504d ago

Dolby is not owned or profited by MS. Fault MS for other stuff, but this isn't it.
Do you guys ever get tired of this...

Woah wait WTF? How are you turning an audio option into a payed product? Wow that's greedy

Zeref1504d ago

That's Dolby, you need to pay for it on any platform lol

gold_drake1504d ago

not true. ive had it on my phone day one.

ScootaKuH1504d ago

Nope. I don't recall having to pay to use Atmos on my phone and it's enabled constantly.

This is nothing short of daylight robbery. What next? You have to pay a monthly fee for graphics? Have I got my dates mixed up? It's not April fools day is it?

alb18991504d ago

Curtain, how much did you pay for your phone?

Zeref1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

@curtain_swoosh

Which phone has Dolby Atmos?
Either way you have to pay for it on PC as well.

So it's nothing new.

You need to talk to Dolby not Microsoft

gold_drake1504d ago

@Zeref @alb1899

samsung s20 +

and the price doesnt matter. the comment said "pay for it on any platform". i dont have to pay a subscription for it. that was the whole point of the comment.

Silly Mammo1504d ago

I just bought a home theater atmos compatible receiver, guess I need to check to see if it has a monthly Atmos charge. 🙄

alb18991504d ago

Is not a monthly payment. It is incredible how many people talk without read.

ScootaKuH1504d ago

Exactly. This is a new level right here, paying a subscription for a certain sound mode. Er, a thousand times no.

Zeref1504d ago

It's not a subscription

DaveZero1504d ago

It isn't anything to do with Microsoft, Dolby decide the charge and I believe it's a one time fee.

DarXyde1504d ago

You learn something new everyday. Didn't know Dolby was asking for a fee.

My phone has Dolby Atmos (OnePlus 8). Surely, Microsoft could have secured a deal to have lifetime access for all units sold? Apparently, phone companies do it.

MadLad1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

Looking at the comments, am I missing something?
I use Windows 10, and while there a handful of free surround sound programs to be had, most of the higher quality ones are a one time purchase, with Atmos being one.

phoenixwing1504d ago

yet sony went to the trouble of making their own 3d audio and giving it to the player without charging them. It's obviously the better deal with sony than paying for dolby atmos.

DeadManMMX1504d ago

MS does have their own system in place it says it right there in the article. Let me guess you couldn't bother to read before you commented. This is an option for anyone that wants to use the top name in Sound.

MadLad1504d ago

lol

People will nitpick over everything, as long as it fits their narrative.
I'm a bit of an audiophile, and I had no issue plugging my A50s directly into the 360/PS3 back in the day. They had solid surround representation all the way back then, let alone the new consoles.
Atmos is a third party product that's a bit more customizable, and they ask a one time purchase of $15 measly dollars if you want to use it.

That said, it's just an option.

Your typical consumer wouldn't even know the difference between most spatial audio programs like this without being told there was a difference.
The only people who benefit from these more customized programs are people trying to get the most out of a low end headset, or the niche market of those really picky about their audio, trying to get the most out of their higher end $200+ sets.
Your average gamer using the typical $60 - 120 midrange sets will see virtually no difference between the stock programs used in either of the systems. This really is a non-issue, and wouldn't even be talked about had Microsoft not added the free trial in with the headset.

Zeref1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

Xbox has Windows Sonic for free as well... Dolby Atmos is paid because it's Dolby.

ScootaKuH1504d ago

Now it starts to make sense. Perhaps this is why Sony decided to use their own tech rather than rely on Dolby. Good move imo

alb18991504d ago

So you think that Sony isn't charging for 3d audio?
Hahaha!!!

alb18991504d ago

Everything that sum cost to a product you buy...you pay for it, one way or other. Business 1.0.

alb18991504d ago

Phoenix,
You talk like the headphones doesn't work right without Atmos. It is just an option.

Atom6661504d ago

How is that a better deal? Better deal would be if Sony included its proprietary codec in its headset AND allowed things like Atmos and DTS, no?

And I swear I just saw you talking about pc gaming in another thread. If you're a pc guy, why would you even begin to think that a mid-tier proprietary headset with less options is the "better deal?" Plus the fact that Windows Sonic is free...

Strange takes, man.

Profchaos1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

Sony also has years of experience in the audio industry somthing that ms doesn't.

In fact mark cerny promoted the PS3 audio configuration as being superior to the PS4 as more CPU was dedicated to audio. It's been a cornerstone of their business forever and it shows.

Xbox Made $21 Billion Last Year, But Needs You To Pay More For Games

"While Xbox prints money, while it spends $75 billion on acquiring Activision, while it aggressively cuts into its profit attempting to corner the market with Xbox Game Pass, and while it does little to curtail bloat and overspending at its studios, it wants you to give it more money. And you shouldn't."

"Rather than absorb the cost of inflation, tariffs, and other costs, Xbox is passing along the cost to its consumers. This is an odd decision to begin with"

When US-based fake-journalists don't know at all what they're talking about.

Nintendo's listing games at $80 after their most successful console generation in their history. They even increased the price of the Joycon 2 mouse strap One Freaking Dollar because they can. Sony has said the PS5 generation is their most profitable generation so far and also has their own international console price increases and even increased the controller price stateside.

This isn't an Xbox problem, it's a games industry problem.

TylerFischer2d ago

What does the quote have to do with the rest of your comment?

Tacoboto2d ago

What business in this world is *not* going to pass an increased cost onto the customer in some way?

darthv722d ago

@Tyler... that MS is only the latest in the trend of companies not wanting to absorb the cost of inflation. That XB is but the latest platform to pass along the cost to its customers. If both Nintendo and Sony (which also made $$$$$) did not find it an odd decision... why would you think MS would?

crazyCoconuts2d ago

Finally someone bringing up inflation instead of simpleton golden book stories of greedy CEOs and their yachts

S2Killinit1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

@Darth
Correction. MS is the first. This isnt inflation related. The inflation round of increases happened across all platforms.

MS is the FIRST not the last as you implied, to pass on cost of tariffs.

The problem is gamers. They indulge in a luxury industry and live in a bubble where they think prices should remain the same for four decades. What other industry keeps their prices the same for four decades? None. Price rising is the norm.

The problem here is entitlement. Microsoft just spent 100 billion dollars trying to better their platform and they pull in 20 billion a year in revenue not profit. How long do you think it's going to take before they make their money back? What did you think they were going to do with their prices?

darthv722d ago

...MS already made that $$ back the first year. And i think there was a piece about it when it happened. I guess you can search for it.

Bathyj1d 23h ago

I call bollicks on that.
I doubt Xbox has made $100b profit since it started.

S2Killinit1d 18h ago

@Darth
No they didnt. Not even close. They will be paying that 82 BILLION with profits, not revenue.

S2Killinit1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

@Darth
MS has not made 82 Billion in all its time in gaming industry. They spent more on Activision than they have made in 4 generations. It was an emergency purchase.

Whoever told you they made 82 BILLION in PROFITS thought you were stupid.

darthv721d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

^^... it doesnt take much to look it up. https://macrotrends.net/sto...

And I'm talking about MS... not just the gaming part. Seeing as it was MS $$ and not simply one division that was used to buy ABKZ. And yes... they did make that $$ back.

"Microsoft gross profit for the twelve months ending December 31, 2024 was $181.715B, a 14.48% increase year-over-year."

Bathyj1d 7h ago

Rereading your message you clearly said MS not Xbox but Jesus Darth, that's some major goal post moving. C'mon you're better than that.

My comment was obviously about Microsoft requiring some return on investment from the investment they made , not through other means. that's not how business works.

If I buy a Bitcoin and it loses 4000 in a month I'm not okay with that just because I made six thousand in a month at my regular job. I want the Bitcoin to make a profit otherwise it wasn't worth it.

A business that doesn't generate profit is not sustainable even if it has a Rich Dad. eventually that well will run dry.

It's not just a games industry problem it's a global economy problem everything is going up

goken1d 22h ago

Nope prices in China ain’t going up.
Even in South east Asia where prices went up the last few years, it’s no where near what the Americans and Europeans have been experiencing.

In fact just a couple of days ago i got 120 eggs (size c, it’s not big) that was on offer for USD$3.25. Ask yourself, how much would that be in the US right now.

neutralgamer19922d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Just stop buying at launch and wait. Also this price instead kind of tells the consumer if you want to spend less sign up for gamepass. I always wait 6-12 months before buying. This way I get a game after a multiple patches and pay most half of not less price. There are very very few games which are worth full price at launch

Whether we like it or not guys prices gonna go up. Will anyone really be surprised if next playstation and Xbox launches at 699 (with disk drive sold separately) , $99 controllers, 80 for digital and 90 for physical

P_Bomb2d ago

I’m not a Doom guy lol, so no I’m not buying that one. If anything I’ll demo it on Game Pass, someday. 🤷🏻

Notellin2d ago

Yeah I'm definitely not buying that one. I'm only interested in Perfect Dark and Fable but I'd never buy at MSRP. I'm the consumer who plays the games when you can get the Director's Cut with all DLC on sale for $10.

Profchaos2d ago

Probably should have used /s

Christopher2d ago

Honestly, everyone just wants me to buy their games 6+ months after release.

Notellin2d ago

The last five years all I've done is purchase games during the spring and fall sales. Saved so much money and played the same games with all the patches/DLC.

lukasmain2d ago

I've been really supportive of MS bringing their games to Playstion, including buying Indiana Jones when it came out although I'm not planning on playing it this year at all. But from now on, I refuse to buy anything they release at 80. This is it, Will always wait for sales form now on, just on principal. I can easily afford it, but I can't justify $80. NO WAY

ravens521d 17h ago

Exactly. That's what's going to happen. I got Expedition 33 day 1, I was a part of that million in 3 days. Imagine if it was $80... It wouldn't have sold a million, maybe been considered a flop and the studio closes. This isn't going to end good.

MrDead2d ago

The brought up some of the biggest IP's in the industry for a reason, and that reason is f**k you pay me if you want to keep playing.

This is where industry consolidation leads, three major publishers are no longer competing. More and more owned by fewer and fewer means price rises.

Profchaos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That's how businesses work they don't absorb costs unless they have to.

They don't owe us anything and neither do we same goes for Nintendo and Sony

I even expect valve to increase the steam deck price

Profchaos2d ago

Looks like the Australian price for the series X is up to $849 for the base model bit the 2tb one which is now near the 1k mark.

849 for a console that cost 749 on launch 5 years ago is just Wild it's crazy how bad the economy is tanking right now.

I've never seen a price increase since the Jaguar and that was a while other dumpster fire

neutralgamer19923d ago

Agreed

I hope they're also designing some larger controllers for those with larger hands

DivineHand1253d ago

Based on the info in the article, I see haptic feedback being mentioned and features to further reduce latency on PC and console but no mention of hall effect.

Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft must know something we don't about hall effect to make them not want to use it in their controllers.

redrum062d ago

Rough guess, but if controllers have a longer life span because these sticks won't fail, they potentially miss out on new controller sales.

Knushwood Butt3d ago

I wonder if one will have a mouse built into it?

If a controller is not attached to a console from the beginning, nobody will use its "advantages". No new console, no new experiences for Xbox owners... But Microsoft can replicate Dual Sense and then... magic could happen and PC players could have more desirable options to connect to their systems, not only for PS5 conversions.

UnbreakableAlex2d ago

I really hope they include string HD rumble like in PS and Switch 2 controller. But really stronger. I could barely feel Hd rumble from Switch 1.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Usage Breakdown Reveals Surprising Device Trends

Xbox Cloud Gaming usage data shared at GDC 2025 shows where people are streaming most—and you might be surprised.

clouddosage.com
darthv7212d ago

I get there are those who have no interest in streaming... I didn't at first, but then I got to testing out various games on different devices. I can't use my phone, screen is to small. I have used a 2013 VCR XBO to stream flight sim and it played surprisingly well. I also use a Logitech G-Cloud which is made specifically for streaming XB games as well as Nvidia Shield stuff. and that is what i primarily use now. I also have been using my living room One X to stream indiana jones and south of midnight. Both of which play great with little to no lag. then again i am using 1gb internet on a mesh network with the consoles wired in.

I never thought Id say this but... I really like the convenience of xcloud and PS+ premium and using the portal to play directly from the cloud as well. I get it, I get it... I will get major downvotes but this is my setup and my choice to do so. Everyone has the opportunity to do it themselves so you dont have to take my word for it.

It works for me.

sci4me11d ago

I have to agree. It was a better experience than i expected it to be. I never want it to be the only option though, i prefer to play "the old way" . I dont want to be forced to stream my games of choice but as an extra option on the go its really good..
