Bravely Default 2 Review – Victory Fanfare | GB

GB writes:

I have to be honest, I didn’t actually have very many expectations from Bravely Default II. Whereas I love RPGs in all their forms and guises, and I especially love JRPGs, nothing about Bravely Default II looked that appealing. The art style appeared off puttingly cheap and low budget, the two demos that the developers had released for the game failed to make much of an impression (or at least a positive one), and the last game in the series, Bravely Second, hadn’t exactly been a convincing follow up to the surprisingly revelatory original. Suffice it to say, then, that going into this game, I really didn’t expect much at all.

Nah. He's just the typical praise Sony, crap on everything else, tribalistic N4G poster with too much time on his hands.

I played the demo. Zzzzzzzzz. I can't believe in 2021 we are still reading endless amounts of dialogue text, moving characters around in front of the same static backgrounds, and playing the same old boring, static turn-based gameplay. Why are they not evolving these JRPG's more? Can we not bring this genre into the 21st century already?

@TheRealTedCruz

I'm not sure what you think this has to do with Sony. I own a Switch. You don't think I WANT to enjoy the games that come out on the platforms I spent money on? I just dont understand why these JRPG makers can't get out of this 1990's way of making RPG's and evolve. Games like this feel so antiquated after playing something like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Yakuza: Like A Dragon, or even Genshin Impact. Those are the examples I would look to as to what the JRPG genre as a whole should look like in 2021. Bravely Default 2 is so mired in the past and frankly feels like a dinosaur by modern standards.

Are we sure we are playing a JRPG and not an action, shooter, MOBA, racing, or story driven game?

“ Why are they not evolving these JRPG's more? Can we not bring this genre into the 21st century already?”

Because people still like these style of games? Do you even realize why some people want games like Final Fantasy to return back to its turn-based root?

Uh because they're dogmatic weirdos who live in the past and don't want to see gaming evolve? Final Fantasy 7 remake is fantastic! Theres no damn way I would want to see that series regress back to some 90's 16 bit form. That would be stupid. That's like saying you would prefer cinema to go back to black and white silent films.

Such an odd title. Nothing brave about defaulting on a loan.

Square's naming conventions have gone wild the last few years, I'm not holding out much hope for an improvement to "Project: Triangle Strategy".

curtain_swoosh39d ago

it wasnt "Squares decision" to name it like that but the company whos developing it for them ha. i think silicon is the dev team.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the game. Voice acting is a bit naff and the main character is another boring blank slate, but overall it's pretty decent.
Just scratches that classic JRPG itch and the brave/default feature spices things up a bit.

Besides how grindy it is its actually really great, stupid roddy came out of no where, had level atleast 5 levels to take him which took some time.

curtain_swoosh39d ago

can we just say how under the radar this game was this time around ? i forgot all about it lol

RaiderNation39d ago

Understandable. Its not very memorable.

You've played past the demo?
