Nintendo Direct: The Latest Showcase Was an Utter Disappointment

KeenGamer: "The latest Nintendo Direct showcased plenty of announcements. However, overall, it felt flat and disappointing. Missing updates, missed opportunities, and lots to be desired in this latest showcase really missed the 'wow' factor. This is an overall disappointing example set by the most recent Nintendo Direct."

It's Nintendo, ofcourse it was.

All they do is release a Mario kart, maybe two Mario games, a metro I'd game, fire emblem, smash and a cross Gen Zelda to Segway the next Gen.

It's been this way since n64, Nintendo does not bother trying to make new games. They have a menu and they stick to it

bouzebbal1157d ago

Did anyone expect more than ports?? It's what we got.

ScootaKuH1157d ago

Seems to be the story of the Switch in general tbh. Its catalogue is full of overpriced ports and indies, and not a lot else

BattleCat1157d ago

They even didn't released a new Mario Kart this gen :) It's just a port

Shiken1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

Mario games have more variety in gameplay between 3D releases than The Last of Us and Uncharted do with their follow ups. God of War was cut and paste too till the last one, then they changed it up (just like Zelda did). Also Sony forced players to buy the full price version of Miles Morales just to play the next gen version of Spiderman.

Now don't get me wrong, Horizon was a wonderful new IP and the new Ratchet and Clank looks dope. But Splatoon plays like no other IP in the market and was a new IP from just one generation ago, and Nintendo funded and owns Astral Chain.

Been seeing a lot of pot and kettle narratives from the ponies as of late. It is a shame tgat you are too narrow minded to enjoy all of what gaming has to offer, just to blindly follow one company (as is the case for every fanboy group).

MrSwankSinatra1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

You clearly never played TLoU2 cause that statement is such bullshit. Say what you may about the story, but that game by far has some of the most premier gameplay ever made in video games period. Also Sony didn't force anybody to buy anything when it comes to spiderman, you have choice to buy or not. And if you really want to go there, Sony wasn't out here putting a dumbass time limit on game releases like Nintendo was with Mario 3D all stars and fire emblem, not to mention charging full price for old ass ports of games.

Shiken1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

@MrSwankSinatra

I actually played 15 hours of LoU2 as I bought it day 1, got bored, and never bothered to finish it. All they did was expand on the first game and polish it up, there was nothing innovative about the gameplay. It was not bad, quite good in fact. But it was nothing new either and relied too heavily on a generic revenge plot to push the game forward. That logic of, "you don't worship a game I like means you never played it" is pathetic.

And btw, using your same logic, Nintendo doesn't force you to buy anything either, you have the choice to buy the game or not. Thank you for the pot and kettle example for us all to see.

Zeldafan641157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

Xenoblade isn't that old of an ip either. It originally came out in 2010 and it looks like Nintendo has big plans for it.

Shiken1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

@Zeldafan64

It is basically Nintendo's Final Fantasy, where each game is its own story and they are not directly connected...kind of.

Anyone that saw how Xenoblade 2 ends will know that there is indeed a connection to 1 and 2 in an ambiguous way, and X seems to be on another planet entirely. Whether or not Monolith decides to expand on that as a main narrative or leave it as a sort of canonical easter egg has yet to be seen.

In any case, gameplay wise, while they each follow a similar core as an established IP would be expected to, each game also plays very differently. With that in mind, Xenoblade is a good example of Nintendo building off of something rather than just a copy and paste formula (like some people here would try to have you believe).

Zeldafan641157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

You don't need to explain any of that to me. I've got about 1,000 hours collectively in the 3 Xenoblade games. 2 is my most played at over 400 hours.

Ugh, I need to stop buying full price Nintendo consoles. I’m worried they are going to end of life the switch and it didn’t even have 10 games that interested me

Concertoine1157d ago

I don't think they will. They've said they're trying to extend the life of the switch beyond their traditional lifespan for consoles. It'd be hard for them to build a 70-100 million unit install base and then just start from scratch after 5 years. I see them making a beefier switch model that will run the same games at better specs and them giving the switch a 7 year lifespan (March 2017 - November 2023) before launching their next endeavour.

talocaca1157d ago

As a Switch owner, the software situation is really disappointing.

Yes, we got some masterpieces (BOTW and Mario Odyssey are spectacular), we also got REALLY mediocre titles (Kirby and Yoshi), but mostly we got tons of old remakes with little effort for $60.

At this point, my Switch has been collecting dust for months. Hopefully BOTW2, Bayonetta 3 and Metroid 4 will eventually come out.....maybe 2022?

Relientk771157d ago

Everytime I use my Switch, I have to dust it off and install a system update first. That's how often I use it.

Shiken1157d ago

Sounds like my PS4 Pro.

Shiken1157d ago

We have more new titles than remasters from Nintendo. Not every game is for everyone, but acting like it is "mostly" ports when Nintendo has put out more new 1st party games in less than 4 years than MS and Sony did in the same timeframe from their 1st parties is a bit of a hyperbole.

Gameseeker_Frampt1156d ago

Nintendo put out a single new 1st party game in 2020 while Sony put out 5 new 1st party games in 2020 plus Astro's Playroom. Most of Nintendo's releases from the last few years have been forgettable 2nd party games and ports.

Shiken1155d ago

@Gameseeker

Compare Sony's entire 1st party output and compare it to Nintendo's 1st party IP output, and in even 4 years Nintendo out produced Sony in NEW titles for the entirety of gen 8. You can cherry pick specific years all you want, the fact remains the same.

Gameseeker_Frampt1155d ago

@Shiken

Not even close, which is probably why you don't list all these great 1st party Nintendo games. Since 2017 (and it is important to point out that Nintendo didn't release a singe new 1st party game in 2016), new 1st party games have been BOTW, 1 2 Switch, Arms, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Super Mario Party, Super Mario Maker 2, and Animal Crossing. That is it. Studios that Nintendo owns have put out 10 games since 2017.

Since 2017, studios that Sony owns have put out Gravity Rush 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Knack 2, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Gran Turismo Sport, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, God of War, Blood & Truth, Days Gone, Concrete Genie, Dreams, The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider Man Miles Morales, as well as 4 different MLB The Shows. That is at least 50% more 1st party games from Sony than Nintendo (more if you count all The Shows individually).

Shiken1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

@Gameseeker

Breath of the Wild (cross gen, but day and date new at release)
Splatoon 2
Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade 2
ARMs
Xenoblade Torna (stand alone game, unless you want to say Miles Morales is DLC...then you can call this DLC)
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Luigi's Mansion 3
Mario Maker 2
Paper Mario OK
Kirby Star Allies
Yoshi's Crafted World
Link's Awakening Remake (unless you remove Demon Souls from the PS5 list)
Smash Ultimate
Animal Crossing New Horizons
Mario Tennis Aces
Super Mario Party

The only way Sony had more is if you include every rehashed release of MLB The Show, and even then the fact remains thay 1st party output of new games is neck and and neck. The take away from that is Nintendo did it in less than 4 years, while Sony started alllll the way back in 2013. Let that sink in for a minute.

And that does not include games that Nintendo co developed, published, and funded such as Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Astral Chain (New Nintendo IP).

Research harder next time.

Gameseeker_Frampt1154d ago

@Shiken

Basically you just listed a bunch of games not made by studios owned by Nintendo as first party games and then followed that up by saying that I listed Demon's Souls as a first party game which I did not.

Fire Emblem Three Houses - made by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo; neither owned by Nintendo
Luigi's Mansion 3 - made by Next Level Games; not owned by Nintendo when released (deal will be finalized March 1,2021)
Paper Mario OK - made by Intelligent Systems; still not owned by Nintendo
Yoshi's Crafted World - made by Good-Feel; not owned by Nintendo
Link's Awakening Remake - made by Grezzo; not owned by Nintendo
Mario Tennis Aces - made by Camelot Software Planning; not owned by Nintendo

Basically, the only way Nintendo fanboys can say that Nintendo makes the most first party games is by changing the definition from games made by Nintendo to games published by Nintendo - and then not count games published by Sony/MS when comparing. By your definition, we need to add Drawn to Death, Farpoint, Everybody's Golf, Shadow of the Colossus Remake, Spider-Man, Bravo Team, Firewall: Zero Hour, Death Stranding, Iron Man VR, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Demon's Souls Remake, and Destruction AllStars to the list - and those are just the Sony published games that I know for sure that Sony owns the IP.

Shiken1154d ago (Edited 1154d ago )

@gameseeker

Ok, that is fair enough when looking at only 1st party. But you are still comparing 10 vs 15 over a course of 4 vs 7 years. At the end of the day, Nintendo's output is still higher.

And that is even without counting the many new games Nintendo publishes through second party, or last gen ports.

Gameseeker_Frampt1154d ago

@Shiken

In order to be fair, my list of 15 first-party PS4 games only started in 2017. If one were to start from 2013 you would add Knack, Killzone Shadow Fall, Infamous Second Son, Driveclub, Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian, (and a few more MLB The Shows if you wanted). Additionally, there are the 3 first-party games Sony released for PS3 in 2013 if you want the full picture.

Nintendo has clearly been lackluster in first-party output since 2017. Retro Studios hasn't put out a game since 2014. Nintendo EPD, which is what Nintendo merged all of their software divisions into in 2015, only develops 1 new game a year - with no new ones scheduled this year. Right now the biggest Switch exclusives of 2021 are both second-party games - Bravely Default 2 and Monster Hunter Rise. Nintendo doesn't have to have the most first-party games (since nobody is going to top MS after they bought everything that wasn't nailed down) but they definitely could increase the output.

I went in without any expectations. But was still disappointed because it was mostly filler for a 50 minute direct.

lellkay1157d ago

Love my Switch but the first party output is so laughable.

Microsoft should have left them stay 3rd party

PassNextquestion6m ago(Edited 4m ago)

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

Profchaos5m ago(Edited 5m ago)

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games
