Control PS5 vs Xbox Series X Ray Tracing 'Benchmark' - Unlocked FPS In Photo Mode

DigitalFoundry : "Did you know that Control's photo mode removes the 30fps cap in the ray traced graphics mode? It opens a window into the kind of overhead (or lack of it, in some cases) left over when a 30fps cap is introduced, but in the case of Control, it also allows us to stack up Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5's RT prowess in precisely matched in-game scenarios. Alex and Rich discuss."

Series X has an average of 16% better performance over PS5.

iplay1up21550d ago

You didn't watch the video. None of the comparisons were at 30FPS.

CaptainHenry9161550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

I'm talking about in RT. And Spider-Man MM still looks better than this game imo

GamerRN1550d ago

I agree 30fps sucks but this game definitely looks better than Spiderman. The character models are intense and detailed.

AngelicIceDiamond1550d ago

After you and so many others mocked "wait for better tools" something that DF even said. The defense is "look at the exclusives."

The exclusives are amazing and are already showing PS5's power. Because well, it's one hardware being taken advantage of. Same will happen with X Series and it's exclusive. I still believe 3rd party will be a toss up. Some games will perform better on PS5 others on X.

However that still leaves PS5 and X Series only games. Which we haven't seen yet.

Annoyingly that's where the "war" between fanboys will truly begin.. (sigh)

mikeslemonade1550d ago

PS fans can’t handle the truth. They only buy one system per generation lol

Without a side by side comparison I’d never know the difference. I feel like you win with either version at this point... well, I mean except if you’re buying it for the Series S, but I have no sympathy for you if that’s the case.

1550d ago
darthv721550d ago

Series S does performance mode only so it may lack the RT for now but Remedy could enable a lower point of entry for quality with a 720p RT enabled setting.

AngelicIceDiamond1550d ago

I agree it's so nit picky nobody will ever notice the difference.

Livingthedream1549d ago

Both consoles are comparable its really going to be about the quality in games. Great time for gamers

Series X has an average of 16% better performance over PS5 ... in photo mode.

elazz1550d ago

Yeah exactly. In the end regardless what is possible the truth is that the game runs 30 fps, same settings on both consoles in RT mode.

seanpitt231550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

Yeah in actual gameplay ps5 runs better who’s bothered about photo mode

1nsomniac1550d ago

A lot of people not able to comprehend this video and its importance of it's photo mode. Its the first TRUE benchmark utility of the consoles to show their current brute capabilities.

Yes the XBox might not be showing it currently in gameplay but this shows physical proof that if pushed correctly it will perform substantially better than the PS5...... and yes this will not bring Sony's exclusives to the Xbox but that's not the point of this video.

RazzerRedux1550d ago

@1nsomniac

We already knew the processing strength of the XSX GPU was more powerful than PS5. DF said at the very beginning that this was simply an "academic" comparison.

But if we are going to talk academics then the most important detail to come out of all this is that the claims so many here made that the PS5 was not actually 10.2 teraflops were just nonsense. This benchmark shows that the difference between the two GPUs are exactly as advertised. 12 TF vs 10.2

VenomUK1550d ago

@1nsomniac. You said "Yes the XBox might not be showing it currently in gameplay but this shows physical proof that if pushed correctly it will perform substantially better than the PS5."

The Digital Foundry video explains that in photo mode neither console is being pushed in the same way a game requires so the photo mode is able to take advantage of the raw GPU Tflops. As the Series X has got a faster GPU this is why it has better results in photo mode.

However, to power a game each console utilises multiple different i/o systems. So yes, the PS5 has a slower GPU, but the current thinking from some experts is that it is faster in other areas such as compression, SSD and sending data to and from the cores which is what has helped it get better performance than Series X in games. Now the question is will developers be able to use the extra GPU power of the Series X so it can neutralise the advantages of the PS5? Time will tell!

Jayrod1549d ago

and on paper it has 18 percent more teraflops there you have it either way I’m not gonna switch over to Xbox and loose my PlayStation library and friends for 18% more teraflops and some decent exclusives

ScootaKuH1549d ago

These comparisons are getting stupid. Now we're comparing photo mode? A mode specifically designed to generate a still image. Give me strength...

What a pointless video. I was expecting RT comparison and we get photo mode framerate.
What a change from the PS5 has no HWRT narrative from a few months ago. Really going out of their way to find some advantage here.

--Onilink--1550d ago

They already did the comparison. This was because they found that photo mode uncapped the framerate so it would work as a benchmark.
For me it was actually interesting to see that (putting aside the actual dev time it could take) its looks very possible to do 60fps RT with a lower/dynamic resolution and not just stick with a 30 cap, especially with VRR in play

StormSnooper1550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

In PHOTO MODE. I think it’s worth putting that in your sentence. No?

In other news, Control on PS5 takes less than half the space. I guess that’s not relevant to DF.

1550d ago
darthv721550d ago

If Remedy were to offer a 1080p RT mode with unlocked frame rate... I'd take it. They could call it balanced mode and offer the mix of quality and performance.

CaptainHenry9161550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

Remedy is a mediocre developer imo. That's one of the reasons Microsoft never acquired them. The only game I liked from them was Alan Wake but a few key people already left the company

lukasmain1550d ago

* only in Photomode hahahaha

Try the actual gameplay, you know, how it is while playing the actual game. No advantage. In fact, PS5 has the advantage because Series X has the stutter problem

This is a benchmark performed in Photo Mode using the quality mode of each console.

Corridor of Doom level

-33 fps on XSX. 32 fps on PS5

-Looking down at atrium

-52 fps on XSX. 46 fps on PS5

Maintenance access corridor

-56 fps on XSX. 49 fps on PS5

Black rock processing

-57 fps on XSX. 48 fps on PS5

Looking into black rock processing

-57 fps on XSX. 42 fps on PS5

Summary of all levels:
16% better performance on XSX than PS5 (quality mode)

To get above 30 fps on Corridor of Doom required 2070 Super (no DLSS).

RaidenBlack1550d ago

*2070 Super required for 1440p @ 30fps is for console settings (3 out of 5 RT settings turned off, rest settings: low-medium)
https://youtu.be/-Vn9LXYdyf...
For higher graphics settings, a more potent GPU's required.

1549d ago
ProjectVulcan1549d ago (Edited 1549d ago )

Somewhat inaccurate. For higher settings DLSS is all you need on Nvidia. You get 1440p 60FPS with those settings on a 2070S.

As the video observed, the PC version has double the ray tracing resolution as the consoles and thus is not perfectly directly comparable. They are realistically more like RTX2060 Super/Non Super RTX2070 performance taking this into account. We have seen this rough level before when ray tracing. WD: Legion for example.

Obviously this is also ignoring aforementioned DLSS performance which of course everyone with an Nvidia GPU will use because it makes an RTX2060 faster than the consoles with ray tracing enabled.

NeoGamer2321550d ago

Translation next to no difference.

At 10-14 ft away on a 55-65" TV the human eye won't pick up the difference. You might "feel" a slight difference but it won't be significant.

These two consoles are priced the same (when you compare the ones with the same features) so, gamers can be confident both will last the generation.

RazzerRedux1550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

Incorrect. I can clearly see the frame per second in all my photos and paintings.

;-)

Seriously though. This is shows us what we have already known. The pure power of the XSX GPU is around 16 to 17% more than PS5 as shown in TF calculation. That's fine, but unless it translates directly into the actual gameplay then what does it matter? This is a confirmation of the power on paper and little more than that.

As it is, both games run at 30 fps in quality mode as this clearly shows neither have stable frame rates otherwise.

Neonridr1550d ago

if it was the other way around this wouldn't be the case.

ocelot071550d ago

@Neonridr

If it was the other way around your self and others would pretty much be saying it doesn't matter.

Neonridr1550d ago

@ocelot07 - I have a PS5 my man. I don't drink the koolaid. I have a Switch, PS5 and gaming PC. I play games wherever I want. I don't have some strange allegiance to one piece of plastic and one piece only.

I just like to point out the obvious.

S2Killinit1550d ago

@neonridr
If it was the other way around DF would be mentioning this in passing.

RazzerRedux1550d ago

@Neonridr

"I just like to speculate selectively."

Fixed

RememberThe3571550d ago

The XSX is more powerful the PS5 by traditional metrics, of course it would be more notable if the PS5 performed better.

NeoGamer2321550d ago

@S2Killinit
That is completely untrue. DF Highlighted that PS5 was outperforming XSX for AC Vahalla. It was not mentioned in passing.

1550d ago
S2Killinit1550d ago

@Neogamer
This is the photo mode, series x has an advantage in the photo mode and its being posed as a benchmark that can be generally applied. Valhala was the actual game and even then they brushed over it by making sound like the results shouldn't be used to draw any conclusions.

NeoGamer2321550d ago

@S2Killit
I watched the DF video for AC Vahalla and to me they did not "brush over" that PS5 was better. What they did say was that between the two, XSX was doing odd things that should be fixed. And magically in subsequent patches the XSX caught back up to PS5 graphically. So they were simply stating fact.

1550d ago
Tetsdah1550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

@Neogamer

Even after the patches, John still stated the PS5 was outperforming SeriesX on Twitter for Valhalla. Did something change with the most recent patch? The SeriesX has to lower its resolution more to have similar frames, as well as lower quality of effects.

That's why they said this Control benchmarking is academic. Nothing is going on but utilizing gpu, which we are well aware is SeriesX advantage.

Is this some sort of apology video after the last one?

Battlestar231550d ago

The Xbox fanboys need a win for their supposedly more powerful console that the PS5 keeps winning against in comparisons. I say let them have their win just to make them happy for once.

CaptainHenry9161550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

To me it's not who has the more powerful console but who is the more talented developers. If you see GOD of War graphics in 60fps on PS5 compare to Control graphics it's laughable. Remedy is just okay when it comes to graphics. It's like comparing Halo to Doom? Which game looks better? It comes down to the developer

darthv721550d ago

^916... so the only way to feel good about yourself is using GoW and SM:MM to take a shot at Control....?

God that's pathetic.

NeoGamer2321550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

@CaptainHenry916
Agreed completely. God of War even in its PS4 native form was tons better then control graphically.

And the most laughable part is reviewers are re-reviewing control and giving it God of War type review scores when really all they did was turn on the ray tracing, improve FPS, and improve graphics fidelity probably with all the assets they already had from the PC version. WHAT A JOKE!

Tedakin1550d ago

You must have missed the Hitman 3 video.

Sayai jin1550d ago

@BattleStar23, I have a few PS5s and Series Xs. I don't see any trophies or awards sitting by those consoles for these "wins". Owning a particular console does not put one in some elite club. They're pieces of plastic.

lukasmain1550d ago

They get a win... in PHOTOMODE lol. This is hilarious. In gameplay there is no win.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 1550d ago
Outside_ofthe_Box1550d ago

Yeah, this is getting silly now. . .

Both consoles while took different approaches, are more or less the same in power and performance. You're not getting a significantly inferior or superior version of any game no matter which version of a game you choose. The sooner people accept this the sooner stupid comparisons like this will cease to exist.

chrisoadamson1550d ago

are you stupid ? Your totally missing the point. The comparison in photo mode shows the overhead or extra power the xbox has over the ps5 as all the other variables are the same. The game is capped at 30 if uncapped the xbox has a 16% advantage .they may patch the game as xbox has vrr . As more games come out this extra power will be more evident . Big mistake ps5 not having VRR

RazzerRedux1550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

Sure....if you stress test the GPU alone then you are going to find that 16% variance in processing power that we have known about for quite some time. But the frames are capped at 30 for a reason as they depend on more than just processing power of the GPU. DF even hints at possible CPU bottlenecks in the video. As more games come out, we may find that CPU bottleneck also becomes more evident. Time will tell.

Screenshot from the video: https://i.imgur.com/jSXn7rN...

Regardless, VRR is going to be added to PS5.

Kilua1550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

No need to get so emotional. Everyone knows the difference between the GPU Tflops, to come and use this as a metric to boast some sort of "Victory" is laughable. The ps5 version of control arguably (if not, clearly currently) runs better than the series x version.

If anything, this just proves the notion that Teraflop count isnt everything. Photo mode does not equal gameplay.

PS-Gamer-19861550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

LOL xbox plays paused games better than ps5. It is waaaaay more powerful

lukasmain1550d ago

It's not just the GPU. It's how everything works together, that's why you don't any Series X advantage in gameplay for the same game.

buffig1549d ago

If only a games performance was ONLY dependent on GPU performance. Don't you think it's more proof that Microsoft may have focussed on the wrong things when they were designing the series X? They now essentially have 16% GPU overhead, which is being throttled by the rest of the system. They were so focussed on hitting that headline grabbing tflops figure. Sony on the other hand focussed on smart, meaningful design. Which means that in the real world. Games run largely the same on both consoles. But Sony has seen advantages like a 40% reduction in file sizes. Faster loading of assets reducing things like stutter and pop in. Dualsense. Faster loading times.

Lmao photo mode? really.. is there really any use on it???? DF is going lower and lower trying to find something in favor of one of the new consoles.

Neonridr1550d ago

isn't photo mode used in game though?

RememberThe3571550d ago

Yeah but it's not gameplay. Photo modes often perform differently than gameplay. The start of the video Richard says all you need to know, the game on both consoles is locked at 30fps with RT and both versions are virtually the same.

Outside_ofthe_Box1550d ago

"isn't photo mode used in game though?"

So?

Congrats! You bought the version with a superior 16% performance in photo mode. . . Cool I guess. . .?

Neonridr1550d ago

@Outside_ofthe_Box - I have the game on PS5, so I guess I didn't.

Outside_ofthe_Box1549d ago (Edited 1549d ago )

Mr Logic1550d ago

It's somewhat valuable albeit academic. This basically shows that if the game ran unlocked instead of locked to 30, then with a VRR display you would get a fairly decent experience on Series X.

mkis0071550d ago (Edited 1550d ago )

No it doesnt. Photomode doesnt run game logic. Its literally a static world. This is why all the laughs.

Mr Logic1547d ago

@mkis007

So you're making the assumption that the Control framerate in-game is CPU bound? That's awfully insane of you.

Couldn’t agree more. Still love It as a shooter to this day.

Just something about that game. I really wish they would just do a remaster, don’t even need a remake just bring it up to todays out put, touch up a few things if any, and I am there to buy it day one.

Of course I would love a remake built from the ground up. As long as they treated it like Shadow of the Colossus, or close to those type of remake. Wouldn’t want it to get the RE treatment…. Just because the game is already paced so perfect and hits all the right beats that I wouldn’t touch that aspect.
