Xbox 360, PS3 Could Lead On-Demand Video Market

GameDaily Write: The "entertainment hub" approach from Microsoft and Sony could pay off as on-demand video becomes increasingly popular, according to a new report from The Diffusion Group.

If you own an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3, there's a good chance you've checked out the wide variety of film, TV and other video content available for download on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. There's also a good chance you've paid to download one or more videos in recent months, and that's a trend that the market researchers at TDG (The Diffusion Group) expect to continue in the years ahead.

A new report from TDG positions the Xbox 360 and PS3 as "multimedia gateways with legitimate non-gaming media arsenals." With growing video libraries, TDG sees consoles challenging local cable or satellite TV operators for control of the evolving on-demand video market.

Hopefully Sony gets the video store to the rest of the world soon...as its surprisingly supported for such a new service...and if this Blockbuster stuff ends up becoming true, it will become a major feature overall...

I just want them to get it more organized...as what you can buy, and what you can rent, and what you can do both with, is seemingly random...some movies can only be rented...some only owned...some both...why?...if its on there, it passed whatever licensing issues, right?...whats the deal?...

also, it really needs a subscription offer to become a more utilized service...as $2-$3 for an SD rental is a little high for a 24 hour rental...beats going to the store, but offers zero incentive over a real movie subscription service like Netflix or Blockbuster...

they are nailing the content though...the thing has nearly 10X the content it released with, in just 4 months...thousands of different pieces of content, with tons of movies new and old...full seasons of pretty much all the popular tv shows (and a bunch not so popular)...and it gets over a hundred items a week...

I never thought it would grow so fast...but get it to Europe and Japan, as they are missing out big time...

So what's wrong with giving your customer choice? BR will always be there for those who spent a small fortune on a HDTV and don't want to watch poor upscaled DVDs, or even worse, watch compressed video/audio dressed up as "HD" when in reality, it's far from it (true HD sound/video).

You might be content with standard def, or compreesed "HD", but not everyone is.

Tales Of Graces Ƒ Retro Review – Holding Out For a Hero

Gary Green said: Namco Bandai heard the call of many fans asking for the PlayStation release of Tales of Graces which was originally released seemingly exclusively for the Wii back in 2009. If you’re acquainted with the Tales series then Graces f won’t be something entirely new to you, yet if you’re a newcomer then you’ll find a plethora of gameplay mechanics and nuances that distinguish this series from other JRPGs. While the game finds itself following the traditional archetype of JRPGs, such as a somewhat clichéd story, Graces has something to offer to both veterans and newcomers alike.

Paying Extra For Early Access Cannot Be The Industry Norm

Charging for early access has started to become a regular practice in several AAA games, and the gaming community should not tolerate this.

Don’t uh… don’t pay for it then? 🤷‍♂️ It’s 3 days early, let people who can’t wait pony up to pay for early access. I’d hope people have more control over themselves if they don’t want to pay extra. I personally, do not see an issue with the option. If I’m hyped for a game and they give you early access, I’ll pay. If it’s something I can wait to play on “actual release” I won’t pay extra. It’s as simple as that.

Crows908h ago

Except your entirely mistaken if you think it's "early access"

Theyre just charging you extra to play it on release. So gullible.

Obscure_Observer7h ago

"Theyre just charging you extra to play it on release. So gullible."

Not really.

In some cases, paying for early access will grant you access to play those games at the same time media outlets and reviewers are playing their copies.

Besides, it´s a single player game. It´s not like early access to MP competitive games like Battlefield which EA would grant a full week early access to those willing to pay; which gives a unfair advantage to those gamers and breaks the game´s balance.

CrimsonWing696h ago

are you playing it earlier than retail release?

If that’s the correct answer, how is it not early access?

Crows908h ago

It's not early access...it's playing on release...early access is when the game isn't finished and needs a little more time...you also get it months in advance.

Let's not get confused here..

Andrew3365h ago

You get access to the game before it goes live for people who purchased the standard version of the game... thus you are getting early access.

Crows904h ago

Nope...you get access to the game the day it goes live. Those who didn't pay extra are blocked from accessing it as a punishment for not paying full price

VersusDMC8h ago

Microsoft has been doing premium edition early access for awhile(Forza and Starfield recently) ...so why is it an issue now when Ubisoft does it?

It can't be the gamepass excuse as Ubisoft has day one subscriptions as well.

Obscure_Observer7h ago

I´ve paid for Starfield´s Premium Edition to get early access to the game, plus Shattered Space expansion.

I don´t regret my decision and I mighty pay for it again to get early access to Fable and TESVI.

Andrew3365h ago

@VincentVanBro yea like the kind of idiots who worry about how adults spend their money.

Crows904h ago

@andrew

Just like the kind of idiots who get scammed and don't realize it.

Andrew3361h ago

@crows do you understand what the word scam means? Choosing to pay more money to play a game before other people is not being scammed.

as long as people are paying for it, it will be a thing unfortunately.

the fear of missing out is ... huge. especially online.

CrimsonWing696h ago

I don’t think it’s about missing out. Think of it like a movie you’re hyped for. You can see it early if you pay extra or just wait until Friday when it officially releases.

It’s nothing more than that.

Crows904h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Nope. You're not seeing it early. Everyone else is seeing it late.

When a product releases to the public...that's the release date. If they company then chooses to block access to the product unless you pay extra...that's not early access...that's day 1 access.

CrimsonWing692h ago(Edited 2h ago)

@Crows90

No, there’s a public release date and an early release date. Just like with movies having early screenings and then public screenings.

They let the public know the release date and then give people an option to play early by paying more.

It's A Crime That There's No Sleeping Dogs 2 Yet

I agree, I consider the first one a cult classic already

isarai1d ago

You say "yet" as if it's even possible anymore. United Front Games is gone, along with anyone that made this game what it is

CrimsonWing6910h ago

That’s what happens when games sell poorly. And I’ve seen people wonder why people cry when a game sells badly… this is your answer.

solideagle9h ago

Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion

Abnor_Mal9h ago

Doesn’t Microsoft own the IP now since they acquired Activision?

Abnor_Mal5h ago

Oh okay, Activision owned True Crime, but when that didn’t sell as intended it was canceled. Six months later Square Enix bought the rights and changed the title to Sleeping Dogs.*

*As per Wikipedia

boing18h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Sleeping Dogs was a sleeper hit back then. It was fantastic. It actually still is. Would love a sequel to this, or at least a revive of True Crime series.
