Apple late on Tuesday removed an old item from its support site that urged Mac customers to use multiple antivirus utilities and now says the Mac is safe "out of the box."

"We have removed the KnowledgeBase article because it was old and inaccurate," Apple spokesperson Bill Evans said.

That just takes the cake, can they get any more arrogant? This is like asking viruses to be created. Just wait, as they become more and more popular Apple will have to restate their claim, its just a matter of time.

As long as OS X has like a 7% market share, and it's known to be far more secure 'out of the box' than any windows OS, I don't see this being a problem.

The average hacker is going to spend his time coding virus's for the most popular OS to maximise it's effect.

I for one have been running OSX for 4 years now without anti virus and I have never had a virus and never had to reformat. I'm not saying they are 100% safe, but I had a lot more problems when I was a windows user.

I ain't trying to convert anyone over to mac, Windows has it's own strengths as well, Just OS X is my preferred choice.

Agreed, people don't make viruses for Macs because there isn't really any point. As long as MS has at least 90% of the marketshare, what's the point in making a virus that will only infect a select few amount of people. I may need antivirus but I'll stick with Windows XP.

holy christ. The comments on that side put the console fanboy war to shame. I like this one.

"Lastly while yes they are a corporation who has an interest in monetary gain, however where they differ from almost all other companies in the world is they try and do so while also doing their best in creating wonderful products that innovates and pushes the boundaries of technology. Apple is not a ME-TO company.

You see for Apple monetary gain stands side by side with innovation and "changing the world" or "making a dent in the universe" which is whay Apple is a company many believe to be a company with a "soul - rightly or wrongly. Whether you believe this to be some cheesy marketing or fanboy hype or not - believe me that is how most if not all Apple employees go about with their day to day business at work. I have witnessed it with my own eyes. Which is why their products are as good as they are."

all hail steve mobs!
