The Innsmouth Case certainly provides a hint of mystery and existentialism with a dash of whimsy, in this text-adventure based game.
From PSU: "A promising adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's novella is squandered with illogical solutions, childish humour and too many unsatisfying endings. Completists may enjoy finding all the content, but old school 'choose your own adventure' fans should look elsewhere for their fix of interactive fiction."
"The Innsmouth Case is a text-based, choose-your-own-adventure game based on The Shadow over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft. The genre of Interactive Fiction is one of the oldest in video games, stretching back to the 1970s with Adventure. Technological advances mean these types of games are no longer restricted to a text-only experience and are often supplemented with images, animations and music. Let’s dive into Robot Pumpkin Games’ horror comedy mystery adventure and see what’s going on, shall we?" Paul @ Thumb Culture
Dave writes: "Play The Innsmouth Case the right way, and you’ve got a couple of hours of delightfully twisted play here. It feels like it’s written by HP Lovecraft’s saucier, less subtle sibling, and playing hunt-the-ending takes you to some memorable and downright disgusting places. It’s got no substance to it of course - the ‘Case’ in the title mostly gets forgotten about - and what you’re left with is a number of punchlines to bawdy jokes, but sometimes that’s just what a night’s gaming needs."
Why can't someone make a good CoC game? Imagine a solid RPG based around Masks of Nyarlathotep or Horror on the Orient express. There is so much source material to fall short every time one of these things release.
