Why Doom Eternal is my Favorite Game of 2020

Steve D. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "I don’t play games to watch endless cutscenes. I don’t play games to collect random objects. No, I play games for one reason: to PLAY THE GAME! There’s no game plays quite like my GOTY of 2020: Doom Eternal."

Sadly I can't agree. I thought it was going to be fun, started it on hard but it just isn't engaging for me or fun. I never felt like going back to it after my first few days playing it.

A lot of people seem to feel that way about Doom Eternal. Takes a while to get into it and appreciate the gameplay loop because of the resource management.

I own it but I haven't gotten around to playing it. Held off because I want to play the next gen version

No reason to wait. Plays buttery smooth and looks great on at version. Except maybe the switch.

@RgR

My main reason for holding off is that the PS5 version will probably use the adaptive triggers. I also like having a string of PS5 upgrades in the coming year alongside the genuinely new games (Ghostrunner, Doom Eternal, Metro Exodus, Control, The Witcher 3, maybe Cyberpunk eventually, etc).

My gaming situation is also very different than most people. I have issues with my hands (particularly my left hand) and the PS5 controller (modified with convex sticks) is the first time I feel like I can properly play games since the PS3 when these issues started cropping up. I've slowly played SOME of the best games over the last 7 years but now I can play anything at whatever pace I'd like.

I have so much choice. I'm currently playing the PS5 version of Borderlands 3 and it feels so good to be able to sink hours in a game at a time (difficult to do before) without having to wait at least 3 or 4 days to play again, and the adaptive triggers are great. I have to slowly turn down their intensity setting throughout a play session though. I've actually sought treatment for my hands with limited success (inflammation issues which required injections, maybe other undetected issues but I discontinued the treatment during the pandemic)

You maybe don't like arcade shooters like doom then.

I also disagree, I ended up not finishing it. It had some of the 2016 magic but it shifted the difficulty way too much around running all over the map while every single enemies know where you are at all time, all of them very OP. All of this on Hurt Me Plenty. And while the soundtrack is cool, the visuals were very much what I would have expected in 2013 not 2020.

This game was a terrible FPS let alone someone's GOTY. What the hell?
Hades was a far better game all round.

Stsrted playing this recently after getting it on sale.
It's as good as the 2016 version. I do find it more chaotic but that's intentional I think.

Defijitely getting the hang of it after 3-4 hours. It's all about killing demon's the most efficient way possible while being on the move. There's actually some strategy involved in the game.

Fully agree. It feels more like games that I really used to engage with when I was younger. The only thing I will say is they could have made multiplayer something more fun, or just leave it out.

Borderlands 2/3 are my adhd games of choice.

For me it's always been fighting games like SF, Tekken, GG etc.. it really gets my mental stack flowing and forced to take a thinking approach as opposed to playing brain dead.
