No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 Botched Launch are not Similar

Despite having a disastrous launch, the ordeal of No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 are not parallel examples.

No Man's Sky was overhyped and under delivered. But on a technical level it was solid.

Cyberpunk was overhyped and then train wrecked off a bridge, straight into a fuel truck then exploded.

Rocketisleague1646d ago (Edited 1646d ago )

To me this the same both devs lied about their p r of7xt significantly. Nms was playable but it was missing everything bar the planet generation and a ship. I t was truly an abomination 9n what was promised at launch, I played the game too long before I realised everything was missing and couldnt get a steam refund. Also the gane ran like crap on my oc with decent specs, Dr o as multiple times.

Cyberpunk, nms thought me the lesson t9 wait and see for all games. So I'll get cyberpunk when it's ready

blacktiger1646d ago

actually he never lied, he never said there is multiplayer that will meet everyone, did they?

uth111646d ago

@blacktiger - not so much, Sean talked about Dark Souls-like multi-player experience where you might see messages people left behind, find their base, see their spirits of sorts. By 1.3. They fully implemented that form of multi-player.

He explicitly warned people prior to launch to not expect the kinds of multi-player they were thinking about, to no avail.

But then starting with 1.5, they started adding the kinds of "play with your friends" multi-player that the community wanted, so it got there eventually

Rocketisleague1646d ago (Edited 1646d ago )

Blacktiger

Multiplayer is not the only.thing they lied about. Multi0layer wasnt even importwnt to.me. its the MANY other features, most of the game was missing. And yes they did lie about it.

Anyone.that just mentions multiplayer wasn't paying attention on release to all.the features that were mssing

thorstein1646d ago (Edited 1646d ago )

NMS was never supposed to be multiplayer and this is in print. The story is literally titled: Stop Thinking of No Man's Sky as a Multiplayer Game. It was written by GameInformer https://www.gameinformer.co...

EDIT: ...in 2014

Imalwaysright1646d ago

blacktiger

He didn't lie? The guy showed fake footage of the game https://www.youtube.com/wat... and you're saying that he didn't lie? Hello games released a broken game, an unfinished full priced game and false advertised their game. CDPR released a broken game and hid the fact that Cyberpunk console versions are straight garbage. Both studios went deep into anti-consumer territory and both deserving of the criticism they get.

staticall1646d ago

@uth11
@thorstein

No Man's Sky never supposed to have multiplayer, really? Then please expain this quotes by Sean from interviews:

?: Do we ever get to see outselves?
!: No, you don't see yourself. So the only way for you to know what you look like is for somebody else to, you know, see you.

?: Can you run into other people, other players on the game?
!: Yes, but i chance of that is incredibly rare, just because of the size of what we're building
(c)
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, youtube - ?v=ZqeN6hj4dZU

?: Will you be able to play with your friends?
!: Yeah

?: Is there a competitive element to this game?
!: Yeah, if you want that, yes

?: Can you grief other players?
!: A little bit
(c) Game Informer, youtube - ?v=n0uYnwqlslU

This whole bit at around 5:55
(c) Eurogamer, youtube - ?v=lWhSdSAm7To

Or this at 3:18
(c) Kinda Funny Games, youtube - ?v=y6WH6VAhjxI

What about stickers on the day one game boxes, on top of «Online functionality» icon?

--

And in the article you provided, it says this:
«Even though players can name their discoveries, affect the galaxy for others connected to the cloud, and encounter other player characters, ...»
«People keep saying to us, “Yeah, but what if I knew where they were? Would I go there?” And it's like, yeah, but they are going to have to stay there for quite a while while you get over there. And then once you get over there you might land on the same planet and then you will say, “I'm on a planet the size of Earth and I am on a mountain. Where are you?” Which is, I know, a weird thing and it's a daunting thing.»
and so on. So he specifically says there's a multiplayer component, just not a MMO, where you can explore with players. Meaning that he, you know, lied.

The Launch of No Man's Sky really was not "botched". It was just that the gameplay loop was shallow.

Cyberpunk 2077??? Well, "botched" isn't the right word either....

Imalwaysright1646d ago (Edited 1646d ago )

Not botched? The game was broken, incomplete despite being sold at full price, didn't look at all like the footage of the game the studio had been showing before release and if Sean was Pinnochio his nose would reach the moon with the amount of lies he told in order to sell his game. NMS has the worst launch I can remember in this industry.

ArchangelMike1646d ago

Hold up.

The game was not broken in any way. That's just factually incorrect. All thes reviews are still up, not one of them complained about a broken game.

The game did look like the footage before release - that was not the issue either. Again the original reviews are still up, go get your facts straight.

Sean Murrya did lie. And yes, featires promised where not there at launch.

But at launch you had a fully functioning and playable game from beginnig to end. Therefore the two cannot be comared. Ecvent he level of outreage No Man's Sky generated at it's lauch, pales in comparison to the outrage of Cyberpunk 2077.

The fact Sony pulled it from their store cements the game as the worst launch - even beating out Anthem.

Imalwaysright1646d ago

Factually what now? Skip to 11:30 mark or just watch the entire video to see how Hello Games went all in into screwing their costumers https://www.youtube.com/wat...

The game that wasn't just one of the most anticipated games in recent years but also a game that had one of the biggest launches of the year and was from a celebrated and highly respected studio triggered a bigger wave of outrage than a game from an indie studio? You don't say... but let's not forget that even though it was from an indie studio NMS garnered a huge wave of outrage as well and there were countless reasons for it.

ApocalypseShadow1646d ago (Edited 1646d ago )

Mike, the game was broken. The A.I. was trash and nowhere near what they claimed. Mine would crash often while playing NMS. Sean mislead gamers with versions of the game he presented at interviews, at the PSX I went to where he lied up on stage in front of me. I even got to see those knuckleheads Patcher and Keeley there in Vegas. The game was missing all kinds of content he said would be in the game. One time, I tried for three hours in getting a portal to work then finally giving up. Later reading online that they didn't even function. Also finding out that there was nothing at the end of the game. Didn't want to waste my time with no pay off. Didn't play it for a year. After that. I'd try it for 10 minutes after updates, then go to a different game.

I was pist that Hello Games sold an unfinished game. The first time I let my guard down and bought a game on reputation on fun that I experienced in Joe Danger. I was tempted to refund like other gamers did. But instead, I left it on the hard drive. Also pist that they said nothing for months.

The game is definitely better today. Really ugly in VR that they won't update. It works but my eyes are more important. I still find it boring to play. Maybe it's the crafting garbage I don't care for. Running around looking for elements just to take off. Maybe I'll turn that off and play it. But Hello Games is now on the "no buy" list of developers. They lost a customer as whatever they make, I will skip.

CD did the same thing in my opinion by misleading gamers in a product they knew was broken. There are loyalists that are learning a lesson to not put this company on a pedestal. They are just as shady as the other shady companies.

bunt-custardly1646d ago

I think the parallel is both promised features that weren't in the game when they launched.

BattleCat1646d ago (Edited 1646d ago )

And now lets think how bad halo infinite would have been, if they had released it :D.

DragonWarrior191646d ago

Yeesh, I don't want to think about that. Between a what if if had released with the state of the reveal demo and now with the massive backlash because they are trying to turn original Halo into Halo 4 and 5 with the 343i design hideous armor, they'd lose the entire community.

Artemidorus1646d ago

They have the chance to prove themselves and become what NMS is now.

Cyberpunk 2077's 2.3 Update Opens a Pandora's Box the Game Can't Close

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a new update after developers previously stated it no longer would, bringing the possibility of more still to come.

hollabox7d ago

I'm hoping the update fixes their poor FSR 3 implementation, and add FSR 4. FSR 2 looks better than FSR 3 in CP2077 by a wide margin. On my 7900XT I just use XESS if I want to add RT at custom 3K resolutions. Already beat the main game, but half way through Phantom Liberty expansion. I would like to get back to it later on this month.

anast7d ago

I have more hours in this game than any other. I would happily put more into it.

MastaMold6d ago

I second this and a PS5 PRO patch too please.

RhinoGamer886d ago

I finished it and had a blast, wish there was a new game + option.

Demon-kun2d ago

I wanna be able to dual wield it would add a decent bit I feel hell if they wanted they could even let us dual wield like knives and swords as well or something just sounds like fun to me

Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2: a cutting-edge game translates well to Nintendo's console hybrid

Few games among the Nintendo Switch 2 launch line-up can match Cyberpunk 2077 in putting the system through its paces. It's a staple of our PC benchmarking suite for good reason: the open world design is a solid stressor for any CPU, while its effects-heavy battles challenge GPU resources as well. This Switch 2 release has clearly been a big undertaking for developer CD Projekt Red too, who produced the port in-house with unique optimisations for Switch 2's ARM-based architecture. It's also remarkably the Ultimate Edition of the game, with both the core adventure and the more taxing Phantom Liberty expansion bundled in - an extra portion that proved too demanding to justify a last-gen console release, and was instead restricted to PS5 and Series X/S, and yet here it is running on Switch 2.

To cut to the chase, Switch 2 offers a truly viable way to enjoy Cyberpunk, either in a portable format or docked under a TV. However, CDPR has shot for the stars in its ambition to include Phantom Liberty as well, and it's here that Switch 2 hits some technical limits - with frame-rates struggling as we explore its newer Dog Town region. Still, that aside, there's a lot to admire in the game's engineering for Nintendo's new console overall, and how competitive it is in comparison with other consoles.

I am happy for CDPR. Their hard work paid off because the Switch 2 version are always in the top 5 Switch 2 launch game sales.

jznrpg8d ago

Not much launched with it besides ports so it should be expected I guess.

OMNlPOTENT7d ago

I mean.. what did the PS5 launch with? One exclusive in Demon's Souls?

repsahj7d ago

@Omnipotent
Not just PS5, Series X has zero launch games. XD

DivineHand1258d ago (Edited 8d ago )

This may be one of the weakest launch lineups Nintendo has ever had, with Mario Kart being the only first party game, but Cyberpunk 2077 will definitely give you tremendous value for your money.

One tip I can give people who have never played the game is to first read books from the cyberpunk subgenre. This will allow you to appreciate the story much better. If you find yourself asking which life path is the best to take at the start of the game, in this case it is Corpo, Streetkid, and Nomad. You likely don't know enough about the genre, and certain things will fly right over your head. While it is not mandatory, the game will be 10 times better if you read or listen to some books first.

Some books I have enjoyed in that genre are:
Cyber Dreams by Plum Parrot,
Stray Cat Strut by RavensDagger
Tower of Somnus by Cale Plamann
Mist Runner by Nicholas Searcy

If you can only read or listen to 1 book, then I recommend Cyber Dreams by Plum Parrot. It is the closest thing to Cyberpunk 2077.

anast7d ago

Or play the TTRPG which is was based on.

Profchaos7d ago

I'd say its stronger than the switch as Mario kart has a broader appeal than zelda.

It was also a better launch line-up than the gamecube and possibly wii u

DivineHand1257d ago

@Profchaos the WiiU likely had the worst of the bunch which is partly why the system failed.

The gamecube had smash bros melee that launched 2 months after the initial release and that is one of the best games to release on that console. I assume every gamecube owner would be happy with that game.

The switch had Breath of the Wild which is still considered one of the best games of all time. I remember playing through that game and unlocked every equipment, upgraded every equipment to the max, found all the dragons, defeated all the Lynels and completed all the shrines in that game before defeating Ganon at the end. It was a good time from start to finish and made up for the lack of other launch games.

I just think that if they had us waiting that long for the switch 2, they should have more than just 1 or 2 first party games ready within the launch window. If we had at least gotten a trailer for a new 3D mario I would be extremely happy. With the current switch 2 lineup, there is no draw to go out and get it immediately like a new console launch should make you feel. Right now the main appeal is to provide a quality of life update to play switch 1 games.

OMNlPOTENT7d ago

There is also a book directly related to the universe of Cyberpunk 2077, it's called "No Coincidence". I thought it was a pretty good read.

Kornholic7d ago

"One tip I can give people who have never played the game is to first read books from the cyberpunk subgenre."

If somebody gave me this advice before I started my first Cyberpunk 2077 playthrough, I wouldn't have even bought the game in the first place.

DivineHand1256d ago

True because I wouldn't have played it either. It's just that I read those books after playing the game and thinking back, a lot of the motivations of each character started making more sense.

I just wanted to through that tip out there to recommend someone try to understand the cyberpunk genre more before playing. They will get more out of the game.

40 vs 60 fps is not something that I would even consider calling "competitive"

1nsomniac8d ago

Then you don’t know enough about the subject you’re trying to talk about..

badz1497d ago

hahaha...what? are you serious right now? the Switch 2 is not a PC where you can just change the graphical settings to get to 60fps...Unless CDPR released a patch to make it run at 60fps, that is.

As of right now, it's stuck at 40fps at best and that too with DLSS from quite a low base res already. so yeah...it's not competitive.

Profchaos7d ago

100% 40 isn't a arbitrary choice its a strategic choice because it opens up access to supporting technology on the console

Good-Smurf8d ago

DF are Nintendo's occasional bootlickers after that blatant Zelda games ad scandal.
Games like CP2077 are meant to be played on big console or powerful PC on a big screen.
Got to love how they're simp for full price purchase of 5-year-old game and still getting the worst version to play on.

1nsomniac7d ago

Wow you guys don’t let up for a second trying to blame DF for anything you can pick out the sky at any given moment. It’s embarrassing dude.

It’s always DF are bootlickers for Nintendo today, Microsoft yesterday, Sony last week. Make your mind up people… pick a side and stick to it. Sounds so stupid when you’re trying to make a point that some company is biased but that no one can make their mind up who the company is biased towards any given day of the week.

stoney1017d ago

Yep, the amount of hate they get is ridiculous. The funny thing is if you actually look at the comments on their early switch 2 videos people are slating them for not giving it enough praise and constantly comparing it to ps4.

ZycoFox7d ago

They had a "Sponsored by Nintendo" video not long ago, it literally says so at the start.

I trust them for showing frame rate analysis and they're decent for that, but their overall review for Nintendo is overrated, Mario Kart is the same game it has always been.

Really the only one that got close to topping DKR was MKDS.. So it's no wonder it's often ranked as the highest rated Mario Kart.

repsahj7d ago

It's obvious that you're not following DF. In the weeks leading up to the Switch 2's release, didn't you know that DF had so many articles downplaying the Switch 2 because they believed it was far from being more powerful than the PS4?
