8 Reasons to Choose Console Over PC

With 9th generation hardware just landed, there has never been a better time to buy a console with that money you were saving for a GPU

I stradle both tbh. Started off as a PC gamer in the days of Pentium processors. I got real tired of having to constantly upgrade my motherboard / graphics card / Drivers/ RAM etc etc. The problem was I could just never keep up, and my PC was just never good enough to run anything at max/ultra settings anyway.

However, there are lots of games that I love that are just not on consoles (Total Warhammer, Disco Elysiium, Eve Online, Homeworld, etc etc) , so I maintain a mid range gaming PC that can handle a few games - although Total Warhammer pushed it to the max though.

But when I want to have that blockbuster - 50inch 4K TV - gaming experiece, the consoles just make it a much easier, and more comfortable experience. I know the PC master race believe that PC gaming is where it's at; and us lowly console fanboys are the runts of gaming. But tbh, I'd pick the convenience of a console over even a high end PC.

But that's just me.

Psychotica1618d ago

You're not required to keep up and if you buy a console you're still not keeping up because the hardware is static and PC hardware is constantly progressing over the lifetime of that console. You can also play PC games on a large screen 4k Tv. I just bought a 48" LG OLED tv that sits right next to my PC and I sit on a couch in my little man cave playing PC games.

KyRo1618d ago

Some people love the simplicity of a console. No faffing around with drivers, messing with ini files, adding mods to fix issues devs were to lazy to fix, upgrading hardware that the average person would never even attempt... Just turn on and play.

PC has a lot of benefits over consoles but it's also nowhere near as accessible or as easy for most people.

Also having fixed hardware isn't a bad thing. It can optimised to its max potential. Find me any PC with the same specs as the PS4 from 2013 that has games that play games and look as good as TLoU2 and GoW.

ArchangelMike1618d ago

"You're not required to keep up".

^^This statement is so not true.

The number of times I've had to get a new graphics card etc just to play a game that I was anticipating. 2 years ago I had to get a new PC to play Warhammer Total War 2 on Ultra settings. This same PC now can't run Cyberpunk 2077 on Ultra settings. That's a 2 year window. To play Cyberpunk on PC, I'd have to "keep up" and buy a new graphics card that is the same price as a next-gen console. I can't be bothered with that evey 2 years.

SegaGamer1618d ago (Edited 1618d ago )

@ArchangelMike

So because you can't play every single game at ultra settings, you think it's a requirement to upgrade? How do you put up with consoles then? because console games don't have the same ultra settings pc games have. Also, as time goes on, the hardware in those consoles become more and more outdated and developers need to cut corners to get the best performance out of their games.

You're not required to keep up at all. You can still run new games on older hardware easily. You only need to upgrade if you must get ultra performance out of every single game released. Unless you're rich, it's not worth upgrading every year to get the max performance out of 2 or 3 games.

somethingcool871618d ago

@Psychotica this a totally a different subject, but how do you like the lg cx hooked up to your pc? I have seen a lot of complaints about vrr mode crushing blacks, not working properly, and horror stories about burn in. How has your experience been so far? Would you recommend it?

Skuletor1618d ago

@archangel

You know you don't have to play games on Ultra, right?

Psychotica1618d ago

@bornthisway - So far I have no complaints and haven't seen any kind of visual issues at all. My only complaint is worrying about burn-in but from what I read you only need to be concerned if you have static images on the screen for hours. So for example, I play chess a lot but I won't play it on that tv since the board is a static image and I might play for hours. The other thing is that it's not really that easy to have a game play on the monitor of choice, you have to tell your computer which one is your main display in order to get a game to easily play on that monitor\tv. But yes, overall I would recommend it. The visuals can be so amazing.

Even if you dont keep up and upgrade ... you can still game at lower graphics settings later.
Cyberpunk lists GTX 780 in the Minimum sys requirements for 1080p low.
A card that came out 6 months prior to PS4. Getting the point here?
But you can also still use it for multimedia productive work and even rendering.

ArchangelMike1618d ago

I get what you're saying, but I think guys have missed my point. For me there is no point spending money every couple of years on a PC / graphics card /etc only to run games at low or medium settings? I mean seriously, who does that? You spend money to get quality results, right?

The_Sage1617d ago

Raiden... I think the point is, there is nothing even currently on PC that looks as good as The Last of Us 2

Neonridr1618d ago (Edited 1618d ago )

I mean you can buy a state of the art PC now and it still be good for quite some time. I was using a 1080ti GPU for the past few years and was still getting upwards of 144 fps running @1440p with all the bells and whistles on. My CPU is 2 generations old (8700k). 16GB of RAM is truly all you need for gaming.

You don't need to upgrade your system every 2 years for the next new game to come out. Adjust a few settings and I bet the game will still look great.

RazzerRedux1618d ago

Exactly. Having granular access to settings makes a ton of difference in the longevity of a component.

Sunny123451618d ago

I agree with Mike. Also I think the age aspect has to do with it. If I was a teenager or in my early 20's I wouldn't have a problem of maintaining a good pc, but now I am almost 30 and life is busy, console suits me best, used to have an xbox a pc and ps. But last gen ps4 satisfied my needs, and now ps5 will be more than enough.

I get the best games on PlayStation and I am more interested in gameplay than graphics or fps, and that remains same for all platforms.

Psychotica1618d ago

@ArchangelMike - How is it not true since you are not required to play in Ultra settings??

ArchangelMike1618d ago

Like I said to RaidenBlack above - for me there is no point spending money every couple of years on a new PC / graphics card /etc etc - only to run games at low or medium settings? What's the point of that. You spend money upgrading your PC so you can run games on the best settigns that they've been made for, right?

thornintheside1617d ago

But it's true at the opposite end of the scale. I sport a AMD R280, and some of the games i played recently, I just snuck in thru the minimum spec required.

Counter points....

"Cheaper Initial Investment"
" the PS4 may have a GPU like that of an archaic Radeon 7850. But when you try playing a game with the graphical fidelity of God of War or Uncharted 4 on a PC, that 7850 would be screaming for its death."

Thankfully, PC gamers don't have to stick with that "archaic Radeon 7850". With consoles, what you have is all you will have. You have to wait for a mid-gen upgrade to improve. PC does not. But a keyword is "initial" investment. Counter arguments include cheaper access to games as well as free online which is ignored entirely in the article.

"Console Exclusives = Better Performance"
"Arma is infamous for its poor optimisation and Baldurs Gate 3 didn’t work with the RTX 3000 cards..."

That is going to vary from game to game. You can selectively choose a couple of games to make whatever point you want. Death Stranding is superior on my PC in every single way to the PS4 version. Of course, that depends on the PC, but again, the performance level is what I choose, not what a corporation chose for me.

"It’s no secret that Steam’s sales have been declining recently and with dodgy websites like G2A and CDKeys now unable to sell you codes on the cheap, new AAA games will cost you £50."

Just not true. Still plenty of options to get games at a discount on PC. A simple google search will show.
Cyberpunk 2077 prices. I bought it at $44 a few days ago. Current prices are as low as 43 euros which is less than 40 pounds.
https://www.allkeyshop.com/...

"Buying a £55 brand new AAA title on PS4, only costs me £28 thanks to this feature. It’s incredibly easy to do and manage, all you need is a friend who also likes saving money and your next gen £70 games become £35."

That's not how it works. You cannot split the cost of a game with a friend. You buy the game and you can share with your friend, but your friend does not own a copy of the game. So good luck getting your "friend" to pay half the cost of a game they won't own.

https://www.playstation.com...

"If any PC enthusiast tells you that PC’s aren’t a pain in the arse, then they are either lying or don’t realise that 90% of people who want to play games, don’t understand how to maintain a PC."

PC gaming is certainly more involved than console gaming. Calling it a "pain in the arse"....that is hyperbolic at best. It isn't that difficult to update drivers. The driver software makes it as easy as updating your PS4 firmware. There is little to be done otherwise. Clear your cmos? Come on. "Things may go wrong". Fixed. And that applies to consoles as well.

Summarizing the rest: "Custom Architecture" section just rewords "bred for one purpose" for fluff. PC belongs at a desk is nothing more than a personal opinion. Controller support is superior on PC due to more options.

Psychotica1618d ago

I agree with most of what you said and especially the last section. I almost never have problems playing PC games, it's usually pretty straightforward. Obviously people trying to run the latest AAA game on their grandmother's Walmart special that is meant for browsing the web and doing her taxes are going to have their share of frustration and problems.

JeffGUNZ1618d ago

Exactly, I don't know who this author is trying to convince but this is just weird. I built my my PC for GAMING, that's its focus. Do I go on Twitch, or Reddit, or Youtube here and there? Sure. I have a macbook for anything computer related and my gaming PC for gaming. They literally make intel software that tells you when you log in that a driver needs an update. Nvidia experience also tells you when a new game ready driver is available. You shouldn't get any viruses on your gaming PC if you're not looking up porn or clicking on anything you don't know. This article is like the author is trying to convince himself that playing on console is fine. It is, it's great. It's a preference.

NeoGamer2321618d ago

I find I like both.

I have consoles throughout my home on TVs. This allows me to game in more places, and they are really easy to manage.

I have a powerful gaming PC as well in my den. Because you can't beat the best the PC has to offer.

I also use streaming on my phone and tablets now when my Console or PC is unavailable to me.

Psychotica1618d ago

I am primarily a PC gamer but I will get the PS5 this spring AFTER I upgrade my PC. I will buy the PS5 for any exclusive that I actually want and can't get on my PC, just like I did with the PS4. The advantage of consoles is obviously the initial cost and that's especially important if you have to convince an adult to buy you one. But in my opinion, PC's are more cost effective when you consider all the things you can do with them in comparison to a console. For example, I play chess a lot and have an electronic chess board connected to my PC that allows me to use a real board to play against either the computer or people around the world. I also have a Plex media server with over 500+ movies installed that I can stream to any device and can even share a movie with a friend across the country. I also do my taxes, occasionally do work on it, browse the web far easier, back up my phone and yes I have over 500+ Steam games and games from other services.

Weapon_of_choice1618d ago

Lol a decent graphics card is the same price as a whole new next gen console. And of course we don't want to bottleneck that expensive graphics card, so we spent an other 2 new console for a cpu and fast memory.

Basically you can roughly have 3 to 4 next gen consoles for 1 gaming pc.

And Windows won't get you them tasty Nintendo en Playstation exclusives.

But if you like a good shooter with 200+fps or Fortnight go spent.

Oh I forgot cheat engine, my second reason to not game on a Windows platform anymore.

SegaGamer1618d ago

"And Windows won't get you them tasty Nintendo en Playstation exclusives"

It's funny that people like you often bring that up. I have been playing primarily on my pc for over 3 years now and haven't missed console exclusive games one bit. It's hard to miss something when you literally have thousands of other choices to choose from.

Terrible article, probably shouldn't have been approved, poor story/opinion piece full of horribly inaccurate claims designed to provoke flame wars. Dismally incoherent and low quality site in general.

CTA Warns Trump Tariffs Could See Console Prices Rising By As Much As 69% In US

PSU writes: "Back in January, the CTA published a report by the Trade Partnership Worldwide LLC (TPW) that looked at the potential impact of Trump’s tariffs based on his campaign progress. As the tariffs have now been imposed, the CTA has issued an updated version of the report that accesses their actual impact, and focuses on video game consoles, laptops, smartphones, and more."

PRIMORDUS2h ago

PC and torrenting go hand in hand lol I will not be the one buying a Switch 2 then, probably will pass on the preorder notice from Nintendo if I receive it, because I am not paying $70, $80 or even $90 for a game if prices increase. This Orange shit bag thinks he can tariff digital goods, what a dumb ass, we can get games, movies, tv shows, etc for free try again lol.

anast43m ago

This would be a good reason to go PC. We'll see.

Eonjay32m ago

I don't understand because are PC part prices gonna just rise too? The best outcome for gamers is to see the tariffs rescinded and quickly before the increase take hold.

btmgov291h ago

All you PC dirtbags that steal digital goods.......your day will soon be coming too. I have no problem with the hammer coming down on these foreign based companies. They need to start moving their production facilities and jobs to this country and producing their goods in this country, which will happen when no one buys their products anymore.

SavageFlamingo51m ago

You have a child’s grasp of economics.

anast44m ago

You are talking to a child.

PRIMORDUS44m ago

Don't forget movies, tv shows, music etc. We can all torrent. How can the orange idiot do anything about that lol. Take down one torrent site, there are others in it's place, hundreds. It's like a weed remove one more pop up. Also there is the old school way of pirating, Usenet which has been around since the early 80s.
