Persona 5 was on my backlog for a while, then persona 5 royal got announced. Once I got into it, I couldn't stop. 150 hours of pure fun. Highly recommend it. Everything about the game is almost perfect, the story, the dilemma of the sins, the combat and to top it all, the amazing music. 10/10 easy.
It absolutely does. I was a little skeptical, even critical at first, because it wasn't offered as DLC, but I was very wrong. One of the best games I've ever played. So much content added throughout that it almost feels like a new game.
Playing Royal now after platinuming the first 2 years go. Enough time has passed and honestly the new layouts alone make it feel different enough to warrant the new game. Only saw the councillor once but they meshed him so well I didn't even notice he was new at first. Love how they've slowly been meshing Kasumi if that was her name. I'm only at like 5/16 so haven't got her confidant yet. But I like the 2 encounters so far. Im actually so hyped to see all the new content
It’s finally starting to come down in price for me to warrant a buy. I didn’t platinum the 1st game, but enough time has gone by for it to start my curiosity and play again.
I might have to look into how much it truly changed the game. After the game's normal slow intro (which didn't seem as bad to me as it does to others), I thought it was pretty good for a while. Thought the gameplay held up & the Kamoshida storyline was compelling.
But the quests got weirder and less compelling, and the combat & dungeons started to wear on me by then as well. I felt the story's momentum was slowing down every quest after the Kamoshida quest, and it kinda hit a wall for me at the art student/master quest. About halfway through that quest I kinda petered out. I think part of it was that it felt jarring/out of place that the student trying to get Ann to pose nude was played as a slapsticky joke not long after the whole storyline regarding a teacher taking advantage of his students. I wasn't offended, but I didn't really find it funny, nor did I find it compelling.
Main reason I fizzled out was because I was finding the combat getting stale at that point - I think that was like 25-30 hours in? I do wish the additional content was made available like Final Fantasy Worlds did with its Maxima update. I'd be more inclined to give it another go. But a whole extra full priced game? Too much of a gamble for where I ended it.
Anyone else not get through P5, but play P5R and find it made a difference to their enjoyment?
You were 1 month into the game lol, you didn't even unlock the full battle system yet at that point lol. Also while the art museum dungeon is the games weakpoint. Persona's about mixing all the elements. In Persona 4 it was a straight up Murder mystery but didn't stop the Jokes and moments like Kings Game or Rise being a upbeat idol girl. I don't like Yusuke so I don't have much to say about that. But if you didn't even get past the second dungeon you won't get much difference, the First dungeon is alot simpler and more streamlined. So far alot of the boring parts of the museum one are cut out. It's a nice upgrade. But you still won't get through unless you change that mindstate. Every Arc in the game is pretty different, You won't get attempted suicide and Sexual assault everytime. Base Arc idea SPOILER**** You gotta go against corps, gangs, Madarame the artist, a hacker group trying to expose you etc. SPOILER END***** It's about corruption and they show all kinds of forms. No rehashing at all
I can see by your "lols" that you don't think I got far enough into the game to give it a fair shake. I went back and checked my save file, and I had put 17 hours into it - so not quite as much as I originally thought. But if it takes until the 3rd or later dungeon to get better, that seems a poor design. And if that's what people mean by a slow start, then that is a crazy slow start lol.
I mean, if I hadn't unlocked the full battle system at that point I'm not entirely sure what they were waiting for lol. It's great in theory that they are giving the battle system things to keep it fresh as the game goes on, but I felt the system was already feeling very repetitive by the time I gave up, so I can't help but think they waited a little too long to introduce more. Clearly that's not the case for others, but at least it was for me.
I liked 3 & 4 a lot, played them on my PS2 and the latter again on Vita. I went back and puttered around a bit in Golden right after I gave up on 5 and I did find the speedier mechanics available in 5 to help get through some of the grind was an appreciable QoL improvement. But I'm also thinking maybe I've just grown out of Persona or something. It just doesn't seem to grab me the way it did back when I 1st played them.
And arcs don't have to be original to be compelling. I thought they handled it well in terms of how characters reacted, the tone, the little twists and turns...it was a well done arc in terms of keeping the pacing and momentum up. That feeling started tapering off the further from the beginning I got, unfortunately. And the things you listed in the spoiler area aren't exactly new territory either. It's fine to rely on staples/tropes, so long as they are done well.
Still, thinking I'll go back and give it another go. See if I can get into it again.
So, quick question everyone. I'm around 75 hours into the original Persona 5 game. I recently bought the Royal version. Should I continue my current playthrough, or start over in the new game and enjoy the new content?
It took me... 130 hours to finish the original Persona 5, that's a lot for a game... And I've been seeing Royal since it was announced, but... I need a good offer to purchase it and have time to play it 😅 first I need to finish Tsushima.
It's on my to-do list.

Loved it!
One off the few masterpiece on ps4, along with Bloodborne
