PS5 HDMI 2.1 Bandwidth Is Limited to 32GB/s, Unlike Xbox Series X's 40GB/s

The PS5 HDMI 2.1 bandwidth seems currently capped at 32GB/s, unlike Xbox Series X's 40GB/s, thus limiting chroma subsampling at 120 Hz to 4:2:2 whereas the Xbox Series X can display the full 4:4:4 format.

Why is it nonsense when both consoles are targeting 4k/8k and 120fps?

Hellcat20201666d ago

Yeah and the "superior " console is really flexing its power isn't it?
Man those graphics..wow

DJStotty1666d ago

@Hellcat2020

What? Come on what has triggered you to come out with a response like that?

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen1666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

It's nonsense because the HDMI 2.1 is designed to run resolutions up to 10k . Do you know of any games running at 10k resolution? How about 8k? No? Okay, as TylerID said, ENOUGH WITH THE HDMI 2.1 nonsense.

RaiderNation1666d ago

LOL sure they are. Just like PS3 and Xbox 360 "targeted" 1080p/60fps.

I_am_Batman1666d ago

@IGiveHugs:

The problem is that 32Gbit/s limits it to output 4k 120Hz at YUV 4:2:2. This means that you currently can't get a full 4K 120Hz signal without chroma subsampling.

mkis0071666d ago

It will be extended in a firmware update. Probably the same one that will allow 8k.

RaiderNation1666d ago

@I_Am_Batman

"The problem is that 32Gbit/s limits it to output 4k 120Hz at YUV 4:2:2. This means that you currently can't get a full 4K 120Hz signal without chroma subsampling. "

LOL! Oh my god my life is over! Chroma subsampling?!?! What will I do?!?!

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen1666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

@Batman

https://blog.playstation.co...

"PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and after a future system software update will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available, with supported software."

Sony has already said the HDMI port will be updated to support 8k resolutions so these "My Xbox HDMI Port is better than your PlayStation HDMI port" stories are ridiculous and are designed for one purpose;

To get clicks from console warriors, in particular, the Xbox crowd who are always looking for any miniscule and completely insignificant advantage over PlayStation so they can make things up and brag about it on Twitter.

ABizzel11666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

Sony should have a full bandwidth HDMI in the box, however, this is nonsense, because all this means is the PS5 uses additional compression over the HDMI signal whereas the Series X doesn't and the biggest issue it causes is text to not be quite as legible over specific color patterns in like for like scenes compared to the Xbox, when zoomed in on them. AKA a nonfactor.

This news being used as trolling or FUD is getting old. These consoles are out, both are great as far as hardware people should be gaming, and enjoying the games not spreading FUD and posting BS (wcctech, who has been trying their best to cause uproars), and commenting on something they have no clue what it even does (the vast majority of n4g).

BLAKHOODe1666d ago

Are they, tho? I mean, we know there is more than likely going to be pro versions at some point. The pros will be the ones that truly target 4k/8k and 120fps. Right now, until they actually achieve it, it's just marketing hoopla.

SmokinAces1666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

PS5 was never a "targeting" 8k. Its an option for down the road, do you know a bunch of people with 8k tv's? He's right this is a nonsense article grasping at straws to make an argument in favor of xbox, its ridiculous.

Ryushaa1666d ago

You're joking right? It's so hard to convail / understand sarcasm on the internet

frostypants1666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

General HDMI debate aside, nobody is actually targeting 8K from a practical standpoint. The capability is purely marketing. There's no good reason to actually produce content at 8K for the home market. Your eyes can't even register the difference unless you're sitting 2 feet from a massive screen...when and if 8K televisions are even ever a mainstream thing. It's a waste of effort. From a general perspective, improvements in HDR tech would be more valuable.

Ju1666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

Tough choices: Do I run sustained 120fps at 4k on PS5 or 25fps at 8k with chroma sub sampling on. Might be the reason the SX lingers 10fps behind. Must be the pressure of those additional bits.

People just come up with these ridiculous numbers lately to make the SX make look better (like "but I can load 10GB in 2 sec if I switch everything off" kinda stories). Sure, keep it coming. Wonder when you can make this work in Youtube comparison videos (almost feels like the current election...making s..t up).

Babadook71666d ago

I’m going to bet this is software related and gets a patch. Hopefully all the way up to 48GB/s that the C9 can accept.

Bathyj1666d ago

Target a decent game and hit it if you want to impress me.

kryteris1666d ago

outside of wimpy indies those are silly fantasies.

Solo_881666d ago

Only a handful of games will actually be able to hit 4k 120fps if any at all. The ones that potentially do will be esports titles or indies. Definitely not going to see it in an open world game. Don't get me wrong I'd love to it to be a constant 4k 120fps but I know it won't. We barely got 1080p at 60fps on ps4.

Babadook71666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

"This will be updated" according to reliable insider "Matt" via ResetEra.

https://www.resetera.com/th...

YourMommySpoils1665d ago (Edited 1665d ago )

It's nonsense cause it's all about marketing something that's not available yet. XD

Hdmi 2.1 is the new standard going forward though so we should be talking about this. It should be at least 40.

RickRoland1666d ago

do you know what standard means? HDMI 2.1 will be standard in about 4 years. HDMI 2.0 is still the standard.

Loktai1666d ago

Wifi6 is the new standard and xbox lacks that. And ? Those 40 aren't showing up in xbox games .

OptimusDK1666d ago

@Loktai - omg. Are what have you been smoking. It is exactly the opposite. WIFI 6 does not give you higher put through - what do you think this would relate to in games - but a more stable connection with a lot of connected devices.

Chroma sampling is related to what you see on the screen!

SierraGuy1666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

Ya? And series x should not have game breaking screen tearing at 120hz on cross platform games vs a 'weaker' console.

Or stutters when entering large open world's.

Split board design is a major gimp.

More wires ...more latency...more voltage drops.

Ps5 is the iphone of game consoles.

Sunny_D1666d ago

Already been confirmed that PS5 is able to do 40 GBPS. They will be releasing a firmware update for it.

vallencer1666d ago

@loktai

Yeah it's a shame it doesn't have wifi 6 honestly. However to get a real world use out of that download speed is just not realistic now or even more than likely before the next systems come out. But I agree don't understand why it isn't there.

@sunny

That's awesome! But honestly I can't be the only one who is tired of just hearing "it'll be patched in". Like a lot of these things the system is missing really should have already been part of it. Don't get me wrong though I like my ps5. I especially love the controller.

@sierraguy

Relax my dude I wasn't even saying the system is trash so you don't have to start trying to crap on the Xbox. I love my ps5 it's a great system.

jeromeface1665d ago

I was gonna say, so standard that literally only a handful of tv's even offer it and even then its not fully feature enabled? That's the definition of NOT standard.

vallencer1665d ago

@jeromeface

It is still the new standard. The new nvidia cards all have it and sure only a few tvs have it but standards have to start somewhere and this is it.

anubusgold1665d ago (Edited 1665d ago )

I say the standard is display port since its been doing 120+fps for years tvs are just catching up lol.

Neonridr1666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

how is it nonsense? My LG TV supports up to 48gbps bandwith with it's HDMI 2.1 ports. Why is it nonsense if one console doesn't come anywhere near that number yet provides a cable that does.

I get that in the grand scheme of things it means very little. But it's worth noting regardless.

Extermin8or3_1665d ago

Because tell me what games exactly are running at 120fps and 4k and thus utilising that bandwidth? Literally like 2- last gen titles running with boosts. What new gen titles are going to run at 4k 120fps? Literally none. The cable is provided capable of it because you fool- 8k blu Ray content and films will be available in the future but why bother when atm there is no 8k content and very little 4k 120fps content. Not worth the extra dev time it would clearly vave cost Sony they prioritised other things like actual exclusives at launch it would seem

TheEroica1666d ago

Lol... Sensitive ps5 owners are already a thing!

SierraGuy1666d ago

Do you think HDMI bandwidth has anything to do with rendering performance?

🤭🤭🤭

Sunny_D1666d ago

already been confirmed that PS5 is able to do 40 GBPS. They will be releasing a firmware update for it.

Artemidorus1665d ago

Would be nonsense if you owned anything below 4K.

CaptainHenry9161665d ago

Consoles are about games. They definitely make use of advanced technology, but it's always about the games. Otherwise you wouldn't even care about console specs and just get a PC.

NeoGamer2321666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

Ya, kind of getting tired of the XB/PS articles where they are constantly comparing the consoles.

There is a huge problem in the console world with people being insecure about their chosen device. I have watched a bunch of videos comparing the versions of games on both consoles. The differences are almost impossible to see from a typical living room location 7-10' away from your TV. And any differences seens so far will be resolved thru firmware/OS/SDK updates.

And when you look at the ACTUAL performance of the hardware. At the end of the day these devices are mostly equal except Series S, which is intentionally a lower cost/performance device.

B_Real1666d ago

Finally a common sense argument. Differences are minimal at best!

SierraGuy1666d ago

Series x is a poorly designed ps5.

ccgr1666d ago

Nice, but can't take advantage of it yet either way

XiNatsuDragnel1666d ago

I'm confused what'll take it advantage of it?

SierraGuy1666d ago

Maybe it will fix the bricking of series x in cod cold war when rt is enabled that requires an entire system factory reset?

thornintheside1664d ago

Monitors and TV's supporting HDMI 2.1 start arriving in february.

Silly gameAr1666d ago (Edited 1666d ago )

Looks like it's time to even it out again.

Probably will be a bunch of things people don't really care about put in a negative light this weekend.

Phoenix761666d ago

I'll bet that 99.9% of all people not on n4g or gaming/tech sites have any clue about any of this (myself included) what so ever and probably wouldn't even care.

Rude-ro1666d ago

A would say there is fluff is the tone...

Sony makes their hdmis.
The PS4 was ahead of its time per the hdmi where as Microsoft had to release a whole other console to do what the PS4 was offering.
And by the results this far... Sony is not having the issue like the series x is per performance and resolutions... the hdmi only delivers the info. Cod is doing just fine with 120fps

RaiderNation1666d ago

I know about it but I couldn't care less. I dont get caught up in this kind of uber nerdy tech jargon. I have a 4K TV. I have a PS5 plugged into it with the HDMI cable it came with. The games look and play awesome on it. Thats really all I care about. The games pass the eyeball test and that's all that matters to me.

kingPoS1666d ago

The goalposts of tech have moved yet again. The ps360 era was mired with tvs capped at 720p. Somewhere around 09 people started wanting full hd tv sets and the content to make them worthwhile.

Fast forward to 2013. By then 1080 was the new standard, anything less was ridiculed. Shortly after, the ps4 & xb1 debuted, people were delighted and dismayed. Time passes suddenly there's a rumors new playstation capable of 4k, many scoff and pay it no mind. More rumors come about, about 4k blurays and microsoft working multiple sku's.

The year is now 2016. Console gamers are beging to thirst for something crisper, more sharper content than the by then, bog standard 1080p. Months later, the ps4 pro hits the shelves and people rejoice. A year later, the xbox 1x joins the 4k table.

Flash forward to December of 2019, 4k with hdr is fast becoming the norm as technology improves. And so consumers are teased with rumors of the upcoming 9th gen consoles preforming 4k at 120fps. A week later, the series x is unveiled, not soon after a tangible sense of excitement hangs in the air.

Months later...

The date is now November of 2020 and new consoles in all their sparkling glory can.. do 120fps, but with tradeoffs.

Gateway MT6706 2008

VariantAEC1663d ago

@kingPoS
Maybe people aren't concerned now because they picked up a PC and tried out HDR, 4K and HFR on compatible displays only to not notice anywhere near as monumental a difference as some have stated. RT is a tangible difference better audio is might provide a more immerse experience and DualSense is next gen in ways no one seems able to explain.
PS4 did that last gen with PSVR though some things just have to be experienced. For me I'm not looking for HDR, 4K or 120FPS all I want is more detail bring 60FPS and full path tracing (in at least one game).
