The PlayStation 5 does not have a web browser, but does anyone care?

The PlayStation 5 launches tomorrow, but like most releases, it won’t have everything you could wish for right out of the gate. That includes a web browser if anyone really cares about that anyway.

I am using my mobile phone browser. I stream rarely to my HDTV, using my Chromecast. No need for a PS5 web browser.

Sonic-and-Crash1308d ago (Edited 1308d ago )

agree....never used PS4 or PS3 fro web browsing ....no need PS5 to have one ..it is a hardcore console and thats good.

solideagle1308d ago

I didn't even know PS4 had web browser until today lol

bouzebbal1308d ago (Edited 1308d ago )

I don't, all I care about is games..
Last time I used Web browser on a console was psp.. Thought was cool back then

kneon1308d ago

I remember trying the PS3 browser, and it was awful. I assume the PS4 has a browser, I've never needed it and so have never noticed.

blackblades1308d ago

I can't 100% say the same. I dont use it cause I have a phone but the tournments puts me on the web when looking at the standings and thats about it.

Sh!t! I do! And F-Sony if they are not gonna put one in. To many steps backwards. No archiving PS5 games on the external drive, no VRR, no folders, no 1440p, slower load times on BC games. And now no browser?
The XsX is starting to sound better all the time now.

The PS3 web browser was brilliant & way ahead for it's time. It even made me a few extra quid while I was at university. I used to download movies from sites like Stagevu and stick them onto a usb stick and sell them down my local pub to the regulars.

I haven't used my PS3 since it gave up the ghost about 6 years ago, but as memory serves me, it was = Triangle = Right click = Scroll down & save target.

It was also top notch for, cough, splutter ahem, perusing gentleman's websites with scantily clad flibbertigibbets. I used the PS3 web browser so much that Popeye would have been proud of my wrists.

So I'm disappointed that a browser is not included with PS5, perhaps in the future, if there's a demand from professional w@nker$ like me.

Ps4 does have a web browser but it runs soooo damn slow.

These days it really doesn't make sense to have a web browser on a console.

NotoriousWhiz1306d ago (Edited 1306d ago )

1) Having a browser would increase the console's exposure to hacking. Potentially inhibiting online play for others.
2) Console browsers are not Firefox, Chrome, or Safari, and tend to be non-standards compliant anyway.
3) Everyone has a phone or laptop that is better for quick searching for information anyway given that it has a keyboard.
4) Using a browser on a large TV is usually a very clunky experience. Text may be too small to read, or comically huge, scrolling is a pain.

Imalwaysright1306d ago

1) Has that ever happened on consoles?

2) And?

3) We're not talking about other devices, we're talking about consoles.

4) Text? What about websites like youtube or streaming websites like 123 movies that allow us to watch movies for free on our big TVs?

NotoriousWhiz1306d ago

1) Yes, literally took me < 10 seconds to find this:
https://wololo.net/2017/11/...

2) Sorry, that was my web developer hat. Websites don't behave as expected on poor browsers.

3) We're talking about why consoles don't need a browser, because other devices that we already own have them. We don't need every device to do everything.

4) Most streaming services have apps that can be installed.

I have a PC and smart phone right next to my PS4. I have plenty of web browser's

Dir_en_grey1308d ago

I constantly use the browser on PS4 cuz I might be doing something else on my phone at the same time.
Sometimes I just want to browse the web on the big screen.
Wish they add it later, does not hurt to have options.

NeoGamer2321308d ago

I remember the PS3 being the first console with a browser and Sony bragging about it. Times have really changed.

Personally, a browser is not a good user interface on a TV. Much prefer my PC, Tablet or phone.

Nope do care. Why remove it, used it all the time in the past, mainly for streaming directly from certain websites. Use it on xbox too

I NEVER used it on my PS4. No plans to do it again. Why use a slow clunky browser when I can just pull out my phone and find what I need.

ClayRules20121308d ago

Yeah, same here! Always take my phone out to look up what I need. This isn’t an issue for me whatsoever.

StoneyYoshi1308d ago

Especially now with the new help feature for some games, we wont even need to pull out our phones.

ClayRules20121308d ago

Yeah, that’ll be so helpful. I forgot about that feature! Thanks for the reminder😉

Kurt Russell1308d ago

It was frustrating when an in game button would lead to opening that damn web browser... I say good riddance.

xxShadow-Shockxx1308d ago

The answer is no, the ps4 web browser was slow anyways, id rather just use my phone or laptop even if the PS5 had a web browser.

Silly gameAr1308d ago

I used my PS4 web browser all of 2 times, so I don't really care, but that doesn't mean that others out there won't.

SullysCigar1308d ago

Nope, I have the Internet on my phone and use it occasionally as I game, I don't need it on the TV.

If they do add it, glad for anyone that might care, I guess.
