LEVEL UP spoke with Gavin Moore, creative director of the game and member of SIE Japan Studio.
Ray tracing is a waste of resources at this point. And in a game like Demon Souls where movement and timing are everything, effectively halving the frame rate isn't wise.
"Ray tracing is a waste of resources at this point." Yeah? Didn't prevent Sony and Bluepoint from lying, did It? Digital Foundry had their lie exposed a while ago which made some PS fans in denial really mad at them. Well, turn out that Digital Foundry was right in this case, and that's why they are important in the game industry.
Lying about what? Edit: ah....IRetrouk pointed it out. sigh....yeah, that's bullshit and Sony should know better.
IT LOOKS SO GOOD, that DF could not even tell if the game had ray tracing or not. They said they were not sure at all when they were looking at it. That tells you all you need to know about how good the game looks Go sell your crazy fanboy rants and accusations of lying elsewhere. You don't know what you're talking about. You don't know what went on or what will release because you won't get to play the game. You're coming across as a very toxic fanboy.
You don't know that they lied. It could be a mistake. Miles Morales has ray-traying and it's an Open World game. It was most likely a mistake. No need to call them liars. Digital Foundry were praising the game and how it looks.
I'm pretty sure DF stated they saw raytracing tech in the demo. Obviously they were wrong.
"Yeah? Didn't prevent Sony and Bluepoint from lying, did It?" Lying? Did anyone of them say theres Ray tracing? Edit: looked it up. Bluepoint did mention it. Edit #2: I swear though, even without it, it looked amazing. Fooled a few tech people too who said there was ray tracing(fire, lighting).
But digital foundry was clearly wrong that the only thing wrong in Halo infinite was the lighting and it could be fixed prior to a day 1 launch.
A bit like MS and Ubi lied about NATIVE 4K on WDL with RT, wonder if you will call them out???
Game development is complex, things change including launch dates, doesn't mean everything is a "lie", please stop trolling.
When did Bluepoint or Sony claimed the game used RT? Come on, go and find the article, I'll wait. 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 You pathetic.
you think digital foundry doesn't lie about/for xbox? cuz I can give you a couple of videos
Ooh an xbox fanboy complaining about Sony lying as if ms never do. How ironic lol.
The PlayStation Blog does say that it will have ray tracing, which is misleading. I don't know that I would go as far as call that a lie though. Very possible it was intentional disinformation, or misunderstanding. That blog article was written by Herman Hulst, so it is quite surprising to see this kind of disparity in reported features. Possible the cart got in front of the horse, but I also don't rule out a ray tracing update after launch. Time will tell. That said, let's not pretend Digital Foundry does not have their biases. Their coverage of Halo Infinite and Dirt 5 was damn near sycophantic as they overlooked some glaring technical issues in the case of Halo Infinite and, in the case of Dirt 5, they kept stating that it was an early build MEANWHILE, they did *not* extend that same courtesy to Shadow of War on PS4 Pro (but when looking at the One X version, they DID say it was an early build). Let's not pretend you really care though. You're a bomb thrower.
@Ratchet75 "When did Bluepoint or Sony claimed the game used RT?" Here: "From Japan Studio and Bluepoint Games comes a remake of the PlayStation classic, Demon’s Souls. In addition to beautiful shadow effects and ray tracing, players can choose between two graphics modes while playing: one focused on fidelity, and one focused on frame rate." https://blog.playstation.co... @DarXyde "That blog article was written by Herman Hulst" That makes it even worse. I could understand some PR dude messing up the details, but the "Head of Worldwide Studios"? Hard to say whether Sony was being intentionally deceptive here. But it is either deception or incompetence. Neither are a good look.
Lying in June when things could have changed since then. I'm going to give them the same benefit of the doubt I give Halo Infinite here, and that's just that things change after a few months. I love the language used to "highlight" a certain company's changes on this site while using language that is more "forgiving" when it's for another company. I still disagree with DF's pixel counting on the game, though. I had no issue with their other findings, but that pixel counting was way off.
@darth ,.. Probably geometry, textures, tessalation, lightning,.. I am sure they can get this to run on vanilla PS4 720 p @ 13fps,.. Don't think it is going to be that fun though,.. If they can get it to 30,.. I hope they can port it down the line,.. (kinda doubt it though,.. This is next gen as fuck)
Game is 1440p 60fps with frame drops, so, what is your point?
Uh....that the frame rate would be worse with RT. How is that point not ridiculously obvious?
How do you know the final version has frame drop? You got it somehow?
Yep, but it has global illumination. It's lovely to see a fire reflection on player's armour
lmao this is amazing! I can tell you now that ray tracing will be on the PC version 100%
yes it absolutely is a waste of resources, and the gain from it is hardly even noticeable. If the devs are good, they will be able to replicate life like lighting and shadows and nobody would even know that there's no RTX.
This is not directed at you RazzerRedux, but I need to say that I get annoyed when I hear console-only gamers talking at length about ray tracing. Stop it. It's new technology that was added to these consoles as an option but it's not going to have big uptake on this hardware. It's just not. It's like bragging about TF, CELL, the Azure Cloud, or RDNA2. You are console gamers. What does any of that really mean to any of you? It's like a casual who buys cars bragging about their Porche 911 S model having 390 ft-lb torque at 2,300rpm and they can't explain what that even means. I hope any future Souls games don't get ray tracing. Bloody waste of resources, as you've well stated, Razzer.
Hold on, didnt they advertise raytracing? Didnt digital foundry point it out? Confused.com Edit Yep they did, still says it on the ps blog "From Japan Studio and Bluepoint Games comes a remake of the PlayStation classic, Demon’s Souls. In addition to beautiful shadow effects and ray tracing, players can choose between two graphics modes while playing: one focused on fidelity, and one focused on frame rate." https://blog.playstation.co...
If I remember correctly, DF said it looked like it could have ray tracing, but couldn't confirm.
I think them listing raytracing was just an error
Agreed! If the could mistakenly post a video with the game allegedly coming to pc.. then this is a muxh smaller mistake.. and on the topic of ray tracing.. ill love me some RT but when Demon souls without raytracing looks 10 times better than watch dogs WITH ray tracing.. then who the hell but a butt hurt fanboy would cry about a non issue for a tag this is RT?
@oasdada if you think just including raytracing will just polish up any turd, you are so wrong. RT isnt the base of game development, its a supplementary technique. Not to take away from Demon Soul's because it looks mind blowing, but ray tracing will have more benefits in games with larger, open areas. In demon souls you dont see untill the horizon, you just see whats there untill the next corridor.
Weird , not sure what’s going on with the messaging with ps studios. The original trailer with the coming to pc line, and the leak about a ps4 version? I blame it on miscommunication and the pandemic but they should really get their messaging in order.
Imagine picking some subpar 30fps ray tracing and getting your ass lit up by PvPers that choose performance mode.
People really need to stop taking DF's word as gospel in most things tech related.
I was actually going off the ps blog post I linked.
Well I am thoroughly disappointed at Sony at this point. I expect these kinds of sleazy lies from MS, not them.
At least someone on this site actually investigates stuff and finds some facts rather then just posting BS. Thank You!
I always try to back up what I say, I'm not always right but I do try to keep it as fact based as i can lol thanks man👌
Whenever someone uses Google translation on a foreign website it doesn't always translate correctly.
The guy who conducted the interview posted the original english transcript of the interview to alleviate any mistranslation concerns. https://twitter.com/PedroPC...
There seems to be miscommunication, on Sony's part. On the official Playstation blog, ray tracing has been touted since the game was announced. But, in the interview, Moore says the game doesn't have ray tracing because it was never in the original plans. ???
"Hey, Left Hand, what's Right Hand doing?" "Who?"
This is 2nd batch of botched messaging for Demons Souls, the 1st being the announcement trailer allusing to it releasing on other platforms. Sony really is hurting itself with silly mistakes.
I mean most of their staff is working from home doing important meetings they'd probably usually do in person online etc. I'm such an environment i guess miscommunication can be an issue.
Extermin8tor3_ - I can see that, but Jim isn't wet behind the ears. The problem is these days your messaging has to be rock solid - otherwise it can be twisted and misconstrued, to the point you have to explain yourself again. Sony didn't seem to have this issue under previous leadership. If you can't tell I'm not Jim's biggest supporter.
DLord - none of that - just sloppy.
Nothing new for a big company like Sony to lie. Everybody lies to help their agenda... Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, EA, Activision, Apple, Google, etc...
I doubt it is a lie. You fanboys always have to get so dramatic Most likely a miscommunication error on ps blog. People make mistakes you know
"Everybody lies" 100%. This industry is CONSTANTLY getting away with false advertising (and a lot of other underhanded practices) wich is why I take with a grain of salt everything that comes out of the mouth of devs/publishers/platform holders.
*shrug* Game looks gorgeous either way, I'm glad they went with 60fps rather than all out visuals at 30fps. Clearly it didn't need RT.
There will be two modes...one with ray tracing. One without.
Where does it say that?
SierraGuy - That's what has me confused. There a 4K/60 mode and a 4K/30 mode, surely 4K/30 would have all the bells and whistles. Even so - Demons Souls is the best looking game releasing during the launch window of any console.
No. Moore stated ray tracing was never in the plans.
This proves what a waste of power ray tracing is. Ray tracing gives higher precision effects, but will never take the place of intelligent and efficient game development.
well, even without ray tracing it looks amazing and worthy of buying a ps5 to play this game. that goes for soulsborne fans and fans that aren't fan of the souls, this is the game that started it all for most of us and you guys need to experience this game for the first time. i was 14 years old and now I'm 26 and the only game that I find better by just a little bit is bloodborne. Demon's souls on ps3 was an underrated masterpiece and that's an understatement. you had to experience it all, the pvp, the co-op and messages like "be wary of sticky white stuff" right before a female npc appears... it was an amazing experience imho. but idk how this will feel until I play it, all I know is it looks very beautiful and looks amazing so far.
You could tellme ray tracing was there or not there and I wouldn’t know the difference . It looks amazing either way . Now they need to get their messaging straight but in the end I don’t cRe
You could tel me ray tracing was there or not there and I wouldn’t know the difference . It looks amazing either way
It still looks phenomenal
This game prooves you don't need raytracing then. It's the best looking game out right now
Ah shit, the Xbox fanboys are going to be all over Twitter with this one.
He says this in that article. Google translated from Spanish. Another word we've heard hundreds of times is ray tracing . Are we going to notice it so much? Lighting seems a key element in Demons Souls . Indeed, one of the novelties is ray tracing, now you will see more realistically when lightning hits a tree and sets it on fire. That is brand new and never existed in the original. Now we can do it because we have all that power with PS5. It's great. Demons Souls for PlayStation 3 is an incredibly dark game. What we have done is, after evaluating the power of the PlayStation 5, we realize that we no longer had to activate or deactivate any light source, but we have been able to include light in real time thanks to ray tracing. So every aspect of the game lighting is in real time. It is dynamic. We have used the lighting as a way to guide the player through the levels, as little hints of where to go.
I'm going to prioritize framerate over visuals and RT all throughout this generation
Visuals over framerate for me...
Thats a shame, but I guess you do you friend
This is exactly Sony's problem, they don't need to lie like this, demon's souls is easily one of the best looking games ever made, instead of just showing it off, they decide to lie and say it has Ray Tracing because Ray Tracing is a selling point now, at the end of the day, Sony fails in it's policy and marketing again, yet scores big with how promising the game itself is!
I didn’t know if it had Ray Tracing or not I haven’t been reading any of the articles about it or any listing . This may be misinformationit may be real who knows but no matter what Demons Souls is the best looking launch game I’ve seen by far and it’s not close besides Spider Man
I'm not surprised. Not only is it too taxing, but for a game like DS with very few reflections and dim lit areas, it wouldn't be of much use anyway. All that processing power can go towards increasing visual fidelity in other areas, having higher/more stable framerates and I think we all agree it shows.
Doesn't have ray tracing? Wth? It still looked bloody amazing ..whoa!!
