Dirt 5 on Xbox Series X - what's the difference between 60fps and 120fps racing?

From Digital Foundry: "What makes the next-gen difference? Today, the embargo lifts on our first look at an actual Xbox Series X title - Dirt 5, from Codemasters Cheshire. Xbox Series consoles benefit from three plays modes, including the ability to play at 120 frames per second on compatible displays - and first impressions are highly favourable. What we're looking at today isn't a final build and optimisations are ongoing up until release on November 10th, but the developers look set to deliver an involving, fun driving game that gives the user plenty of choice in how the generational leap in CPU and GPU power is deployed."

Remarkable!

For all who wants to see an actual next gen game running on Xbox Series X.

By Digital Foundry.

Phil Spencer and Team Xbox truly nailed with the Xbox Series X!

dekke50d ago

...... looks truly this gen

DJStotty50d ago

So it also looks this gen on PS5 then right?

RazzerRedux50d ago

I agree. I mean.....does anyone look at this game and really think it looks better than Forza Horizon 4? I sure don't.

Nitrowolf250d ago (Edited 50d ago )

@DJStotty

It's the game period, I think Forza current-gen is looking even better in a lot of areas outside of the general, like the overall Physics and such.

This is nothing against the X, it'll still be the same on PS5. It's just the game overall direction..

ocelot0750d ago

@RazzerRedux I agree Forza looks so much better lol. How about they show off something like The Edium or Hellblade 2 or something?

PurpHerbison50d ago

This is the attitude that holds back 120fps on consoles. You have to make some sacrifices to get that level of fluidity in your gameplay. Your attitude is why we get BEAUTIFUL games that struggle at 30fps.

ProjectVulcan50d ago (Edited 49d ago )

It looks like Horizon 4? I mean that's a great looking game but it didn't seem that next gen to me. This is not an insult, because at this point there are hardly any 'bad' looking games. Everything looks so nicely refined.

I have been playing that on PC for the past two years and it looks sweet but I would hardly call this game two years later a step up. If anything Horizon's car models look better.

Obscure_Observer49d ago

@RazzerRedux

"does anyone look at this game and really think it looks better than Forza Horizon 4? I sure don't."

How many third party racing games actually looks better than first party games like Forza and GT?

There´s much more money and resources behind first party racing games than third party which makes such comparisons unfair.

Anyway, I´m much more impressed with the 120fps mode on consoles for this game than anything else, and I think that´s Codemaster´s main achievement and selling point here. At least for racing fans, that is.

They should be proud of their work as DF has nothing but praises for them.

Ron_Danger49d ago

It looks on par with Halo Infinite so far.

itsmebryan49d ago

@razz
Unless you see it 8n person it is hard to tell. Must if not all of us stream at 120fps

BillyG0AT49d ago

and it will look worse on ps5 you know

Babadook749d ago (Edited 49d ago )

@BillyG0AT

The biggest differences won't be visual. 18% more gpu power and 3% more CPU power does not make a noticeable difference.

Smclaren198549d ago (Edited 49d ago )

Exactly forza 7 and forza horizon On current gen blows It out the water. Super underwhelming . I really trust digital foundry. But I watched there current video of this on series x . It was very underwhelming filled with screen tearing and a million other things miles behind any of the forza games yet they where praising how detailed it looked and didn’t mention a tone of things I noticed . It was supposedly and earlier build. Apparently Microsoft partnered with Codemasters to use dirt 5 as the first playable public game on series X . Very strange choice a bad choice AGAIN by Microsoft surprise surprise. I’m defo holding off for a good 6 months at least before I consider a series x. There big titles are years away . Sony on the other hand I litterally can’t think of one reason not to get it can’t wait fore Nov 19 😁

NeoGamer23249d ago

Why do people keep trying to define next gen games by their looks?

Games are made up of much more than just the graphics.

darthv7249d ago

I loved motorstorm and its so nice to see evolution reborn with codemasters. onrush was a blast to play and this is taking the best of that and expanding on it.

Army_of_Darkness49d ago

@djstotty "So it also looks this gen on PS5 then right"

Whoa, calm down Mr. Sensitive. No need to get so defensive. We're all saying that this game looks current gen on any console, with or without 120fps.

@Armyofdarkness

Dekke's comment was a clear reply to

"For all who wants to see an actual next gen game running on Xbox Series X."

It was a clear PS5 fanboy comment to try and discredit actual gameplay running on the Series X. The comment history tells it all :

"well at least we know that about xbox that graic was running on PC :P" 16d ago

So my response was not being sensitive at all, was just a put down of another Sony fanboy trying to damage control positive xbox news, otherwise they would have mentioned "looks truly next gen on all platforms" wouldn't they now?

gamer780450d ago

honestly 60fps is plenty, i'd rather them focus on graphics after that point than pushing more fps.

Popsicle49d ago

Agreed @7804. Next gen visuals at 60fps is fantastic. I will likely never choose 120fps over visuals, but it is nice that it seems some developers will provide a 120hz option for frame rate junkies.

ZeroBlue249d ago (Edited 49d ago )

Yeah, unless you're a competitive gamer, 120fps is really unnecessary because of diminshing returns, and frankly, the limitations of the human eye.

dumahim49d ago

Hopefully when the cross-gen stuff dies off, we will get stuff that pushes better graphics, but the 120 fps stuff will probably tail off as well.

Ju49d ago

Actually, I expected the same game unlocked +60fps. Never did I think they would cut it down so much that it looks like a PS3 game to achieve that. Well, that's that. I guess they blew the 120fps bubble right here.

TheTony31650d ago

It's not an actual next gen game.

Chris1249d ago

Sony have no true next gen games either. Limiting the platform a game runs on does not mean it's next gen.

Smclaren198549d ago (Edited 49d ago )

Yeah I get what your saying but tech it is it’s next generation. All Codemasters has done is rave about having all this power on the next generation system and how incredible it is. Then they showed it it’s incredible it’s Hitting 120 FPS on a console . But graphically forza horizon is miles ahead. You can still see the lod pooping in the gemotry change in clear view etc. Infact I think it is just a current gen with the claim of next gen dirt. To be fair dirt has never been a graphical showcase to begin with. Strange choice by Microsoft simply because they don’t have first party games to show or use . Chris 12 demon souls remake so your statement isn’t true

potatoseal49d ago

@ Chris you're a liar. Sony DO have True Next Gen games. Stop spreading your bullshit lies

Chris1249d ago

Wheres that than potatoseal? Not seen one yet.

TheScotsman49d ago

Chris your obviously feeling butt hurt otherwise why else would you bring the ps5 into an Xbox article. Worried are we little boy?

@Chris12 Just responding to "Obscure" who claims that Dirt is a true next gen game on Xbox. ;)

It’s alright I guess. Nothing special but not bad.

Imortus_san49d ago

Very good how they pulled the 120FPS, but the game only looks "good" in quality mode, and still looks inferior to Forza Horizon 3 and 4 on Xbox One X.

I want to see FH4 on the Series X.

Harryvok49d ago

This is a joke post yeah?

blackblades49d ago

Who wants to be hype for this game?

waverider49d ago

Dude forza looks much, much better then this....

yomfweeee49d ago

Arstechnica tore this game to shreds.

Said people could easily confuse the assets with Dirt4.

"Resolution" mode averages only 40 frames, dipping below 30 often. Resolution drops to 1440p even in this mode.

Graphics and resolution get worse and worse as you go to 60 and then to 120.

potatoseal49d ago

Talk about an embarrassing comment. LMAO

DarXyde49d ago

Okay, mate, enough with the hyperbolic cheerleading.

It doesn't look remarkable at all at 120fps, but I also dont think it needs to either. This is the compromise of this approach, perhaps further compounded by poor optimization. I've not seen it running on PS5, but it's likely not as good looking/ running at a lower resolution than Series X.

But if I'm being very candid, we've already been told that the design philosophies of each console are very different, so a multiplatform game released at the same time on both consoles will probably take great advantage of one console over the other. Based on the pop in, it's probably given priority to PS5.

solideagle49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

really?

I know this is early build and I am not a graphics expert by any means but this doesn't look great in my opinion. Isn't this releasing this month? Why show an early build at this point? Please devs show latest build/features etc.

IGN also agrees with me: https://n4g.com/news/237835...

mrsolidsteel2049d ago

@solideagle

Yea, to me at least. I’m not trying to convince anyone else otherwise, it’s just my opinion.

This footage reminds me of the Motorstorm series that was on the PS3, that’s why I like it.

Kurt Russell49d ago

It looks like a lot of fun. I can see myself messing about in the track editor a lot.

Father__Merrin50d ago

Just watched the video it drops to 1800p and some tracks have frame rate issues and tearing. Colour me disappointed....Eurogamer seem to be covering up claiming about 100 times that further optimisation will come etc. This video also confirms ps5 version is also likely to have same issues...

DJStotty50d ago

It is still Series X gameplay footage.

NEXUS-649d ago

Seems to have done more harm than good - just like that other stinker halo.

RazzerRedux49d ago

"sales say otherwise"

What sales?

DJStotty49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

Sales of Series X and S, the console is for pre-order right?

Nexus was alluding to showing Series X gameplay doing more harm than good (and then referenced Halo), i can only imagine he meant sales of the Series X, not sure what else he could have meant.

Gamers are still pre-ordering Series X and S, so the sales indicate no harm has been done.

Or are you party to other factual information Razzer?

RazzerRedux49d ago

"Or are you party to other factual information Razzer?"

Nope. I was just wondering if you had sales data. You don't. Got it.

DJStotty49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

@Razzer

Neither has sales data, Sony or MS.

Saying things like "what sales" as a failed attempt to tout that the Series X is "struggling" sales wise screams of salt.

Will it sell as many as the PS5? most probably not, but i don't cry in my cornflakes and spam PS5 articles with non intellectual fud.

I know they have sold at least 1!!!!

RazzerRedux48d ago

"Saying things like "what sales" as a failed attempt to tout that the Series X is "struggling" sales wise screams of salt."

Oh bullshit. I never even implied XSX sales were struggling. How would I know? There is no sales data at all. Which is exactly why I called you out on your "sales say otherwise" nonsense.

Stop making shit up.

I wonder why they don't make any PS5 video it just Series X video after another for awhile now.
Not having a console in their hands are not good excuse not to make a PS5 video it just showed that they're more biased this time towards Series X.
Where's their PS5 teardown reaction?

Software_Lover49d ago

not having a console in their hands are not good excuse not to make a ps5 video...................

What? How else are they going to make a video? From Thin air?

dumahim49d ago

In their live stream they explained that the teardown came out of nowhere and they're busy on other projects they would prefer to finish first before starting something new. We'll get one soon. Don't worry.

crazyCoconuts49d ago

@software Nxgamer did a great analysis on the teardown video. DF has done plenty of analysis videos before too this is not unique. Awkward absence of a reaction given that they're whole reason for existence is to analyze these things

itsmebryan49d ago

Did you watch the whole DF video? This is still early build.

Good-Smurf49d ago

If that's the reason then that's not a good sign showing off early build of a game due release next month and in few days for current gen consoles.

dumahim49d ago

"Eurogamer seem to be covering up claiming about 100 times that further optimisation will come etc."

Well duh. If it isn't the final version that'll be available at launch, it's worth noting so and issues can be cleared up by launch.

RazzerRedux50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

Cool. So now we know the compromise for 120fps.

"As things stand, the 120Hz mode inevitably pulls back settings to free up GPU headroom for the extra temporal resolution. Doubling the frame-rate from 60 is no small feat, demanding one frame every 8.3ms, rather than 16.7ms. All the core physics and game logic translate intact from the regular options, and so it's on the GPU-side stressors we see changes. Spectator counts are dropped further, as is shadow quality. However, the biggest change is that it renders at a dynamic 2560x1440. In other words, it maxes out the older HDMI 2.0 spec in terms of what that bandwidth can show - 1440p120Hz at peak. Drops are possible, down to 1080p lowest at the starting grid, though it adjusts to numbers in-between too."

It will be interesting to see the comparisons to PC GPUs and PS5.

Obscure_Observer49d ago

"Cool. So now we know the compromise for 120fps."

Do we? Game is not finished yet. DF will come back to it when it´s finished and probably with a comparison video between PC, SX and PS5.

"It will be interesting to see the comparisons to PC GPUs and PS5."

Definitely. How well you´re expecting your 2080 Super to perform on this game?

RazzerRedux49d ago

"Do we? Game is not finished yet. DF will come back to it when it´s finished and probably with a comparison video between PC, SX and PS5."

Very true. Still time for optimization as DF points out:

"All of which brings us to how the game performs, at least in this non-final code. "

"Definitely. How well you´re expecting your 2080 Super to perform on this game?"

At least on par with next gen consoles, I would think. Not sure until I see some benchmarks. I'm not planning to buy the game, frankly. Forza remains the king of racers in my mind and this game does little to change that from what I've seen.

"How many third party racing games actually looks better than first party games like Forza and GT?"

But we are not talking about simply third vs first party. We are talking about a three year old current gen first party game vs third party next gen game with a substantial boost in hardware resources. I'd expect third party to be able to use those additional resources to at least catch up with first party at this point.

dumahim49d ago

There's time for optimization, but that might clear up some frame drops and maybe stabilize the res a bit, but I really doubt they're going to change what needs to be given up in order to hit the 120 fps.

Obscure_Observer49d ago

@RazzerRedux

To this very day I think its VERY hard to find current gen and even next gen games which can match/surpass Ryse and The Order 1886´s stunning visuals. So Dirty 5 not been able to match/surpass Forza Horizon 4 graphically, comes with no surprise at all.

NEXUS-649d ago

We've ready seen games in current gen that look better than the games you mentioned.

And the you have Demons Souls and the future looks bright for next gen.

RazzerRedux49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

I disagree. Red Dead Redemption 2, Hellblade, Detroit, AC: Odyssey, Death Stranding are all multiplats that have surpassed those two, imo. And those are all current gen. Dirt 5 is being shown on XSX. I just think it should look a lot better than it does. And that isn't meant to reflect on XSX at all. Just the game itself.

I'm curious if they actually played this. Talkimg about track deformation I seen basically none. But yet they touted how snow realistically decors and mud tracks deform the track. . Ive seen none of this. Mudflaps don't move tap a car the hood comes of but full blast into a rail and nothing. . .
