The following statistics were provided by Japanese retail analysts, Media Create, based on weekly sales through 3000 retail outlets:
This Week Last Week
Nintendo DS Lite 194,526 127,647
Wii 83,754 86,395
PlayStation Portable 35,700 37,032
PlayStation 2 20,995 20,169
PlayStation 3 19,996 21,105
Xbox 360 7,365 7,041
As can be plainly seen Nintendo formats are currently ruling the roost – boy, are they! – with the DS Lite outselling Sony's PSP at a rate of nearly 5.5:1, while the Wii is positively caning the PS3 at just over 4:1, which is akin to mugging Sony in its own backyard. But if Sony has something to cry about consider the poor, barely-there Xbox 360, which is being outsold by Wii at a staggering 12:1 proportion – and even by the PS3 at nearly 3:1. Ouch!
Of course all of the above is just one measure of one particular market (that's a law unto itself at the best of times) and we daresay that Nintendo wouldn't have shared such information at all if it didn't make 'em look world-conqueringly awesome. Even so, sticking plasters and a mumsy kiss on the forehead for Nintendo's competitors, and so much for the Blue Dragon effect, eh Bill...!
