how bad do the preorders have to be, to lower the price on launch day

Phil is right. The 'price drop' wasn't because of the PS5. It was because of the 360.

RpgSama1294d ago

Lol, what pre-orders? They've sold a little over 100.000 units of the Xbox one and One X in 7 years, they probably allocated like 1000 units for the entire Japanese Market and they couldn't get even those pre-ordered.

MadLad1294d ago (Edited 1294d ago )

I mean, if you just actually look it up, the preorders allocated to Japan sold out in hours.

Xbox has never been popular in Japan, but let's not pretend they didn't move the preorders.

Also, let's be real; I also prefer Playstation by a good margin, but Japan doesn't typically support outside industry. They typically concentrate on their own products, regardless of what the competition offers.
I always find it funny when people jab at MS for not doing well in Japan, when a lot of it has to do with their culture, itself.

jukins1294d ago

So false. . . Please visit Japan once. Everyone has apple phones, Drinks coke, wears nike, listens to pop music. . . Even Harleys are the best selling motorcycle

LoveSpuds1294d ago

Actually Ted, the Japanese like international brands just fine, just ask Apple, the Japanese simply dont rate Xbox, that's all.

RazzerRedux1294d ago (Edited 1294d ago )

We really have no idea how many units were allocated to Japan at all. I wouldn't think there would be many. Probably just enough to say "we sold out". Kind of shit Aaron Greenberg loves to do.

Hakuoro1294d ago

TheRealTedCruz

You post is filled with just latent B.S.

And how fast they sold out doesn't matter if it was only 1,000 consoles just enough for Microsoft to be able to put out a press release about how fast they sold out in Japan.

Get back to us in 6 months when xbox is back to selling a number of consoles you can count on your fingers every week.

Dragonscale1294d ago

Just admit it ted, the Japanese don't like xbox like most of the world tbh. Nothing to do with culture fgs.

xetiro1294d ago (Edited 1294d ago )

@TheRealTedCruz
“ but Japan doesn't typically support outside industry. They typically concentrate on their own products, regardless of what the competition offers.”

I live in Tokyo for 6 years. That claim is completely false.

1. Apple is extremely popular in Japan. Everybody has an iPhone here and run to the Apple Stores whenever there is new model. Also, iPad and Macbook are very popular here.

2. Even Microsoft is popular here with their Surface line, namely the Surface Pro is very successfully in Japan.

You go to Yodobashi-Akiba, the biggest store in Tokyo, and you have the first floor with a huge section dedicated to Microsoft Surface and another to Apple, with all their lineups available for clients to try.

The problem is Microsoft itself doesn’t do the same for Xbox. You go to the gaming floor and is everything PlayStation and Nintendo, with Xbox on a very small corner. You can’t see any Xbox games selection, it’s basically a shelf of Xbox Live gift cards.

Xbox is a complete failure in Japan because Microsoft doesn’t offer anything remotely better then PlayStation and Nintendo for the Japanese audience. Not even Microsoft does any special effort to have Xbox presence on stores.

But I repeat, there is absolutely no special culture bias against foreign brands in Japan. If Microsoft did 50% for Xbox what they do for Surface, they will be at least less a failure. But again, why would Japanese people choose a Xbox over a PlayStation or Nintendo, when Microsoft makes Xbox barely exist in Japan?

Preorders are bad everywhere. PS5 was sold out few hours after preorder started. XSX is still available..... I think true MS target is gamepass. Good bye Xbox, welcome Gamepass !!!

gamer78041294d ago

Yup Microsoft doesn’t have the bandwidth to do two things at once it can only be Xbox or gamespass. It can’t be both!.... smh

sprinterboy1294d ago

Colin moriarty mentioned he expects gamepass to be on ps5 before the end of the gen, I'm not sure he'll be right but I wouldn't be shocked either.

Sayai jin1294d ago

Please show where in thr US, EU, etc where XSX is still available for preorder.

RedDevils1294d ago (Edited 1294d ago )

@Sayai jin just go to Jb hi fi Australia you can order XSX from there, there plenty available lmao

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/p...

Sitdown1294d ago

@RedDevils
I clicked the link, and hit preorder and it says orders are temporarily suspended because of overwhelming demand. Try again with another site.

MecheSlays1294d ago

You can't get a series x wtf you talkin about.

Sayai jin1293d ago

RedDevils, reading is fundamental. The link you listed states that "Pre-orders are temporarily suspended
Due to overwhelming demand, we’ve had to hit pause on taking any more pre-orders. Don't worry, as soon as we have more visibility on stock availability we will re-open pre-orders."

Meaning their preorders are sold out.

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/p...

It's okay. Try again.

RedDevils1293d ago

@Sayai jin When I posted it was available, now it gone or maybe it was last one. So kinda bad luck for you should have look at it when I posted, you could have manage to get yourself an XSX.

Better luck next time.

S2Killinit1294d ago (Edited 1294d ago )

I think it really backfired on them as the preorder results came back MS has now realized that the series S is being viewed as too weak tobe considered a worthy next gen console and now the only consequence is that they will be holding back the development of games on series X without any significant advantages in sales. The two pronged approach backfired on them. Its not just a Japan issue.

Such a dumb story.

Series S in the U.S. = Same price as Switch in US ($299)

Series S in Japan gets adjusted to = Same price as Switch in Japan (29,980 yen)

DJStotty1295d ago

Anything to try and discredit xbox it seems like these days doesn't it lol

Knushwood Butt1294d ago

Switch price never changed, so why would xbox need 'adjusting' ?

Atom6661294d ago

To match it? The initial price was the equivalent of like $314 usd.

Imagine going to best buy next month and seeing a Switch for $299 sitting next to a Series S for $314.

Unknown_Gamer57941294d ago (Edited 1294d ago )

No wonder almost no one in Japan wants one. The Switch is a much better fit for the typical Japanese consumer, and is being sold at the same price. When the XSS was even more expensive, it would have been an even harder sell.

Rimeskeem1294d ago

He might be telling the truth, I don't think people would have bought an S in Japan even if the PS5 didn't exist lol

PitbullMonster1294d ago

Series S had also a price drop here in Germany and it can still be pre-ordered.

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss4d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg2d ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast4d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

gold_drake3d ago

shining force.

but indont see that happening unfortunately.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil10d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19929d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop9d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom8d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor9d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog9d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit9d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

H910d ago

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts9d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H99d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop9d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum9d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai10d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville9d ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

mastershredder10d ago

good god. The devs are not baristas dude. Total 1% ideals. Fing Chadosaurus.
