Reports Suggest Xbox Series X Is Quieter But Runs Hot

Xbox Series X is being previewed by various media outlets. According to some reports, the console is a lot quieter but, this doesn't mean it stays cold.

internal components may be hot to the touch, but if your computer feels hot then you've got a problem.

My main pc has six 140mm case fans so it can blow a lot of air. I've been running it non-stop for almost a week with the cpu, gpu, and memory constantly at 80-100% utilization and the case isn't even warm.

If that's true it would make me think MS hasn't finished working through all the OS features with the new hardware, so it's not in a true low power standby - just faking it. Consoles do perform more during standby than PCs do - like updating and such, but that should still be performed at a significantly reduced clock and power level. I guess long story short the heat during standby *should* be addressable via firmware changes at least i'm guessing

For now, but expect it to be the same at retail. For what's in these boxes, they're going to generate serious heat. Their ability to dissipate that heat is what's important.

I don't doubt that the SSD add on got damn hot too. People overlook that. My Samsung 960 was clocking close to 50C/120F. I bought a $15 heatsink to drop it down a bit. It's not a compact little external either.

Just what you want, to have to open up your console a couple of months after purchase to apply a decent thermal paste. Hopefully it won't come to that, but I'm pretty sure these news outlets that have the console aren't playing as long and hard as gamers will be this holiday season, so I guess we'll have to wait, see and hope.

To me the most important thing for consoles is noise. My PS4 Pro I have to turn the volume up a few notches to hear games properly. Same with XBO X when it is playing a game that pushes the machine.

I like that both these new consoles are paying attention to console noise.

All I care about is noise and power consumption. Hopefully both new consoles are good on that.

I live in a place where console heat doesn't matter much. But, I can see how that could be a problem in climates that are closer to the equator.

Doesn't matter whether game is old or new, but how much processing power it utilizes. Old games are brute forcing their way to gain better performance, perhaps utilizing hundred percent of cpu ang gpu in the process, thus making system run hot. Better wait for more tests with new generation games, before judgment.

Yea ps4/pro fan noise is annoying. But from what I've found by reparing several is that its all luck of the draw in how your thermal paste gets applied. Its 50/50 on whether theres any paste actually on the apu. After properly applying paste and cleaning all dust super super quiet in comparison.

When they test the heat tolerances for CPUs and GPUs inside of PC cases, they do use thermometers to see how hot the components get inside of a PC using a thermometer. Thats how computer hardware and prebuilt PCs are designed. They don't just put their hand on the side of the case and anecdotally say that it's too hot. Go watch Gamers Nexus on youtube, and you'll learn a lot about PC cooling and thermals.

Since we were kids (me and my wife ) I always got every system the day it came out starting with the PS2 at 19 years old. Look at my comment history and you’ll see this was to be the one system I was NOT getting (series X). Had my PS5 preorder in at Amazon and was hell bent on not getting a Series X. FOR ME the Xbox One was a let down in comparison to the PS4 in many ways and it breaking down was the cherry on top. Anyway, my wife found out about the Xbox was at work glowing about her husband having the PS5 preordered when some bastard told her about the series X preorder date. Argument ended with “why can’t I get you what I want to get you? It’s something I want to do”. Well, unlike the PS5, I got my Series X preorder effortlessly. PS5 was a day one preorder, but it was looking grim. Finally got it from Amazon that night. Series X was basically “let’s me try to preorder when Amazon goes live” click once, pay, pay, done. Minimal effort. She was MEANT to have her way and fate wants me to have this system lol. Hope I’m pleasantly surprised.

All devices 'run hot', to some degree,that's normal. Ps5 may well run 'cooler' as it was designed with power profiles in mind.And Kudos to Sony for their design, But remember, efficiency is one thing, power is another. One doesn't necessarily equate with the other. We have yet to see first hand how effciently these machines run, but we do have a pretty good which is the most powerful

How do you have any idea? The only game running on an actual Xbox series x so far is only 4k30fps and doesn't look anywhere near as good as demon soul or spiderman. We've seen call of duty 4k60 with ray tracing on ps5. We've seen devil may cry 4k up to 120 fps with ray tracing which won't be added until after launch like halo. For all this power talk what have we really seen? On paper easy to say it will be better but just how much will 2 tf of power add?

Always thought of heat issues of this thing from the very beginning I saw the disassemble, seems some heat points can created inside and can't dissipate so easily, PC towers has also this kind of rectangular shape but in PC's you have lots of spaces where the heat can dissipate not to mention all the dozens of heatsinks designs, but for the xbox series X all is cluttered in and that's a big issue imo, for the S series seems this will not be an issue.

I hope that clears it up for everyone. I think both the next gen consoles will run quiet and cool. I don't think anyone in this day and age is dumb enough to overlook thermal issues. Xbox had their fair share of backlash with the RROD and Sony's PS4 Pro wasn't the quietest console.

I wonder if the system runs hot on standby due to having more than a few games in suspend mode? If you have 6 games suspended, I can imagine it being hot and drawing a fair amount of power.

Could be right - but you've gotta ask yourself, do you really need 6 games suspended when they load so fast? Now if your assumption is correct, what happens when little Johnny has it suspended over a weekend - or it's not properly ventilated. Could be some house fires on the horizon, I hope not of course. Edit: @below, the trouble is, these journalists aren't saying only that the air is hot (which I agree, would be acceptable), they're saying that "the whole thing" is "violently hot" to the touch. In particular the SSD expansion, seems to be the running theme. Furthermore, reports are claiming this is happening in standby mode, which is all the more odd and not similar to existing consoles or PCs.

i'm only clarifying the podcast, i don't have anything to explain on the other two other than it sounds similar to the podcast one that like the ps4 and xbox one they put out hot air, which is honestly what pcs should be doing suck in cold air and push out hot air. (unless using total liquid cooling with no fans)

Throw an RTX 2080TI in with a high end CPU, overclocked memory and a PSU into a Mini ITX computer case, and I'm sure the results would be the same. As long as the Series X dissipates the heat fast enough, it will work just fine.

They've been testing this system for many months now, so I'm sure the Engineers understand the heat threshold. You don't get high end PC graphics, A.I. and physics without a lot of heat, and that's just a fact of life with computers.

When my pc plays a game that can push it hot air is coming out of the top of my case. My cpu and gpu says its running cool but its putting out hot air pretty warm air. But all games dont do that just the ones that can push my pc to do some work.

Thats normal for a pc when a game is pushing your pc some good very warm air will come out the case. But that doesnt happen with most games. If you look at Hardware monitor even though hot air is coming out of the top of my case the components reports the cpu is running at 64c Gpu 56c so the components are perfectly cool.

When i saw the xbox series x even i thought it needed a second fan on the bottom because of its form factor but it will be fine as long as its dumping the heat out of the case.
