No noticeable fan noise on PS5 at all, console remained cold after 80 minutes of gameplay

Dengeki Online - "PS5 is about a month away from its release on November 12th. Prior to the release, PS5 hands-on was held somewhere in Tokyo! It took about 1 hour and 45 minutes, but I've been playing 2 titles and enjoyed the feel of PS5, so I would like to deliver this report."

This is what I like to hear. It sounds like Sony has made many improvements

+Quiter console
+Improved battery life for the controller
+Faster load times
+Wifi 6

All of this along with the best games

VenomUK1450d ago

No fan noise is music to my ears! There’s a ton of favourite PS4 games I will want to continue playing on PS5 without that background fan whirring up.

SullysCigar1450d ago

I was quietly confident this would be the case, but it's great to get confirmation.

They've acknowledged the fan and the focus on cooling for this gen a few times. Be great to get a few more details, but honestly I'm just pleased to hear how well it works and that it's silent!

lifeisgamesok1450d ago

Yeah, I hear ya. What's weird is low triangle counts made the fan get loud like with some menu screens. I have the PS4 slim so it is a little better with fan noise from what I've heard

1450d ago
boing11450d ago

Main reason I have my PS5 pre-ordered. Can't stand the noise of my Pro. Takes away the joy of playing sometimes.

NEXUS-61450d ago

Marquinho - it is blue on start up and then goes white when in use.

At least it still has leds - and not just coloured plastic like xsx.

StoneyYoshi1450d ago

@Marquinho

That's clearly a straight on shot. Cant see LED strips when they are along the outer edge of the systems gloss black portion.

Profchaos1450d ago

It's fantastic news agree absolutely there's been so many good releases lately thps 1+2, crash 4 and star wars squadrons none of these games have next gen releases planned so it's great that I can finally play without headphones as my pro was ultra loud

The fan noise is one of the most important things for me for the PS5. We don't know the temperature of the room he was playing in, and my PS4 Pro was quiet for the first 3 months as well. So we'll have to see if it stays quiet all the time, especially with more power demanding games in the future.

ArthriticPowers1450d ago

Especially since they have gone the liquid metal solution, have never researched how it's longevity holds up compared to normal thermal paste. But the fact they went that way tells me it was required because even on a large scale manufacturing front its not cheap. Think of it like this. You work in a dusty indoor environment. You could invest in better respirators (liquid metal)or invest in a better dust extraction system. Curious how this goes. I'm not impressed with my pro, had to change the thermal paste after only 12mth even though I wasn't putting massive ours on the console.

morganfell1450d ago

Power flow is constant. Cerny made that clear in his discussion. This was done to eliminate variables.

People really need to watch that presentation. If I didn't know better I would say most people on this board ignored it.

https://youtu.be/ph8LyNIT9s...

lifeisgamesok1450d ago

True though I think Sony put an emphasis on console noise this time. The power adjusting with variable clocks should improve the noise level tenfold

Sunny_D1450d ago

The room temp was 86F because of all the studio lights. So that’s actually really really good.

frostypants1450d ago (Edited 1450d ago )

If your console starts quiet but gets louder after a few months, your likely culprit is dust buildup. Console makers could mitigate this with a removable/washable filter (my PC has one). I feel like they should, given that the tight internal design of these consoles doesn't permit for a lot of tolerance. Having an air purifier/filter in the room that you run periodically is a good way to minimize this.

Gardenia1450d ago

@morganfell

There is a difference between playing in 4K 30fps or 60fps with a lower resolution. That's what I meant with power of the games.

There is a reason why the GoW on the PS4 Pro makes the fan go crazy because it uses the full power of the PS4.

NobleRed1450d ago

We know the temperature they confirmed about 30 degrees.

morganfell1450d ago

"There is a reason why the GoW on the PS4 Pro makes the fan go crazy because it uses the full power of the PS4."

The power demands in the PS4 are not constant.

ProjectVulcan1450d ago

Funny thing I tore down my PS4 Pro today first time and it wasn't dirty inside. The paste seemed poor quality though and the thermal pads were really small, they didn't even fully cover the memory chips.

Fresh quality paste. New big full sized thermal pads. Slapped it back together and it runs really quiet now after an hour on TLOU2, probably top 5 most demanding games on the system.

It's a shame I had to do all this although my results were great, I don't want to do it to a Playstation again. I delidded my PS3 as well a while back with spectacular results. Shouldn't have to do it. PS5 is so huge it should not suffer any of these issues.

Army_of_Darkness1450d ago

@Gardenia

Fan noise is one of your most important factors to the ps5?? Really? Fan noise? 🤣

Profchaos1450d ago

Mine was never quiet but became increasingly louder until I learnt the top case fan could be cleaned it's still loud but not screeching loud like it became

PS-Gamer-19861450d ago (Edited 1450d ago )

@army of darkness

There is nothing funny about that. The one and only thing about the ps4 that i disliked (drove me nuts to be specific) was its fan noise. It made exchange my og ps4 for the second revision which reportedly seemed to be alot more quiet than the og but still bothered me.

Later i on ps4 pro i played all games in 1080p instead of 4k in hope it will be just a little more quiet. In a ddition i changed thermal paste and thermal pads which made it a bit better but still not enough to not bother me. My last hope was exchanging the fan for the new revisions nidec fan will only a slight improvement yet again.

I play with out headphone and and only moderate volume on my tv speakers so yeah learning the ps5 seem to be quiet i a HUGE deal for me, more important than power gaps to the competition, the price, or the size of the console.

But i still take these news with a grain of salt in fear it might be misinformation

@lifeisgamesok
Several websites list the PS5 as not having Wifi 6, but instead Wifi 5. Has there been any official confirmation from Sony on the Wifi that the PS5 will support? All I have seen is websites talk about Wifi 6 due to a “leak” from a “Brazilian website.”

frostypants1450d ago (Edited 1450d ago )

The wifi improvement is so good to hear. Hope this also means a better internal antenna. The wifi performance of the PS4 (or at least mine, which is an early gen SKU) is its biggest shortcoming. Lucky to pull 20mbps in a room where everything else gets 100mbps. Hardwiring is always better obviously but not always an option. Sounds like Sony is making wifi a focal point this time.

Muzikguy1450d ago (Edited 1450d ago )

These launch games of course aren't pushing the system so hopefully the system stays quiet later on. It's nice to hear how quiet it is. Quiet systems like when we were using cartridges. Sure will be nice to not have to crank up the sound to drown out the system. Quiet is a win for the next gen.

Godmars2901450d ago

How is there a wifi 6? Just now hearing about wifi 5.

Homushi1450d ago

its not going to be quiet for long. The games currently being made for it aren't going to be as demanding as the games that will release in a year or two from now. Additionally, as dust naturally accumulates on the machine, it will need to work harder for the console to stay cool and so the fan speed with increase.

That being said, given the size of it and the amount of space there is for the consoles components to breath, it will be an overall quieter console, but rest assured, it will get a little louder. It will need to be periodically cleaned from the inside and blow that dust out and that will help it get quieter. Even desktop computers require they be cleaned periodically, consoles are no different.

DerfDerf1450d ago

A lot of evidence pointing to them running the game through dev kits that were hidden. That would explain why in most of the footage the blue led light is not lit on the console.

subzero19921450d ago (Edited 1450d ago )

Remains cold? That's interesting but this is the definition of a "controlled environment" though. Hopefully Sony sends out units soon to media too so we can see it in real peoples home/offices environments.

Nacho_Z1450d ago

He did say it was pretty hot in the room.

subzero19921450d ago

If that's true that would mean the difference in the PS5 temperature and the ambient temperature wouldn't be much different. Don't know how that makes it "cold" unless the PS5 has an evaporator coil and refrigerant we don't know about in it.

1450d ago
Sunny_D1450d ago

@subzero

The room was warm due to the studio lights inside. The PS5 apparently stayed cool with very small warm air blowing out when he put his hand near a vent.

Ausbo1450d ago

Yeah it also matters what game is running. Playing astrobot will likely be different from games that are pushing the hardware like horizon and god of war.

But it sounds like Sony learned their lesson from the PS4 regarding the sound. Glad to hear it

Profchaos1450d ago

A lot of the streamers that got to play with it also played godfall and devil may cry

Bathyj1450d ago

I don't think it matters what game is running at all. Isn't that the point of having a constant power supply buy a variable clock speed? That the power supply is always the same was the primary focus of the whole system so the cooling system knows exactly what to account for.

Unless I've misinterpreted what Cerny said. Anyone else got a take on this?

azedean1450d ago

He played with astro boy and godfall, then yes ps5 has a very efficient cooling system.

morganfell1450d ago

@Bathyj,

I have never seen a technical talk so disregarded by gamers as the PS5 discussion by Cerny. Posters on this site have ignored his remarks on the internal bay, then the fact you could use approved off the shelf SSDs for expansion, and now the constant power equation.

https://youtu.be/ph8LyNIT9s...

SatanSki1450d ago

@Bathyj
So You're implying that PS5 "pumps" all power to it's processors, even when it's not necessary? Wow. That would be so ecological and economical...

1450d ago
Rhythmattic1450d ago

SatanSki..
Another way I look at it is like the Old Backlit LCD versus Plasmas TV's..

With no pixels presented , a plasma uses less power, as the LCD backlight is always on.. but with every pixel on and white The plasma would increase in power draw, which made LCD's cheaper to run...

Not that I know what the difference will be in Costs to run... Only when we have specs and power draw , will will know what this will actually mean,.... One set metric may be the same, less or more than a variable power draw...... We dont know... yet.

It was warm in the room according to the youtubers @ 30°c because of the studio lights etc, really want a tear down now, be interesting to see if it really is being liquid cooled.

NeoMantas1450d ago

Wasn't it said they were using liquid metal or something along those lines a few weeks back?

pocolocoX1450d ago

Custom vapor chamber brings down the heat.

IRetrouk1450d ago

Supposedly yeah, if true or not who knows, but hopefully we get a teardown soon and find out lol.

Bathyj1450d ago

The liquid metal it true is just to replace the thermal paste to the heat sink.

lifeisgamesok1450d ago

Cerny did say he thinks we'll like what they came up with for the cooling. I think the PS5 will be one of Sony's best consoles

ArthriticPowers1450d ago

I though it was using liquid metal on the APU and ram not liquid/water cooled.

IRetrouk1450d ago

@ArthriticPowers
Yeah sorry, should have been clearer, thats what I ment, I dont believe there's any rumors of the whole system being liquid cooled.

"It was about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and I think it took about 1 hour and 20 minutes to actually start the PS5"

Something lost in translation there I guess haha. Great to hear the fan is quiet that alone is going to be a game changer after all these years of sitting next to a jet engine.

TheProfessional1450d ago

Can we please finally admit that the fan noise on the ps4 pro is absurdly loud? It sounds like it's going to explode whenever I'm at the main menu in COD.

RaidenBlack1450d ago

There's a revised model of the Pro that's a bit quieter.
Mine is the previous model. So it gets a bit loud but not much.
PS4 Slim is actually aint that loud.

lifeisgamesok1450d ago

Yep, the slim is pretty quiet

I must be the only person on earth that has a quiet PS4 Pro. I've never heard the fan..

IRetrouk1450d ago

My spiderman one is sweet, still quiet(I clean them though) no problems with my last of us 2 one yet either, I have a standard white ps4 that was quiet until I gave it to my son, he dont clean it, now it sounds like a jet ...

Bathyj1450d ago

Ive never cleaned a console in 40 years. Closest I've come is blowing in a cartridge.

kingPoS1450d ago

Lucky you. Btw what model is your pro, mines the white Destiny 2 edition.

Gateway MT6706 2008

Bathyj1450d ago

Don't know the number. Black one. Bought it when the Pro first came out.

IRetrouk1450d ago

I found if the internals get too dusty it gets loud, you must live in the cleanest environment ever not to have to hoover your consoles lol fair play.

Storm231450d ago

Mine is the same way. Launch Pro and I never hear that thing.

RaidenBlack1450d ago

The side ventilation ports/slits of both the Pro and One X gets a bit clogged up with dust ... so I clean them once a year.

andy851450d ago

Same. The earlier Pro models were a bit noisy for me but I got the Death Stranding version and I've not heard the fan kick in, they must have done some decent improvements

Profchaos1450d ago

The latest iterations have dramatically improved the launch model was notoriously bad I have the launch model if I don't keep on top of cleaning the fan every six months it gets bad

1450d ago
ziggurcat1449d ago

When did you get your Pro?

Mine's a Day 1 model, and it can get loud at times - so much so that I have had to start putting on the subtitles in games to know what's going on in the cutscenes.

Bathyj1449d ago

I bought it as soon as the Pro came out.

1449d ago
1nsomniac1449d ago (Edited 1449d ago )

It’s really weird that people are willing to say stuff like this.

The noise from the fan is not caused solely from dust. It’s primary function is to cool the CPU. ALL these CPUs are being pushed to their absolute limits, it’s the end of their lifecycle, therefore their thermals spike rapidly whether your PS4 is dusty or not. It’s going to be loud, just not aircraft loud like some but it’s still loud whether you claim it is or not. Sony have acknowledged that their console is insanely loud numerous times, which is why they’ve pushed it as a primary concern for the ps5.

I’m one of those who had an aircraft carrier under my TV. So I literally striped the console cleaned it all. There wasn’t particularly any real build up of dust in there. Got rid of the thermal paste and applied liquid metal instead.... yes it is still loud but at least it doesn’t sound like a jet engine anymore.

Ive put it up standing
Changed to a Nidec Fan and used GelID Extreme to change thermal paste+ thermal grizzly for the memory. Quite a welcome improvements from jet engine in the last of us 2 to barely noticeable fan.

But it's true a consumer shouldn't do all the hassle.

kingPoS1450d ago

Ditto for Dreams and Resi Evil 2. I could play Borderlands 3 all day, but the moment I start either of the other two, the fan immediately kicks into high gear

I haven't played COD since last generation , but I remember it being loud on the menu screen on the ps3 as well. Which is odd since the game isn't doing much at that point

Star Wars Outlaws PS5 Review - Console Obsession

Console Obsession says: "Star Wars Outlaws marks the franchise’s first venture into open-world gaming—a surprising choice given the genre’s long-standing popularity. What sets it apart is how it deviates from Ubisoft's familiar open-world formula. Instead of following the typical Jedi-focused storyline of a third person Star Wars game, the game centres on Kay Vess, an outlaw, offering a glimpse into the galaxy's darker, criminal underworld."
