Founded in 1984, GameStop is one of the oldest cornerstones of video game retail. But in 2020, it's facing big risks as the industry increasingly turns to digital.
Doubt its gonna effect much, still think the disc version will sell more, they are ok, atleast for this upcoming gen lol
Agreed. Anyone who has physical discs is not going to want this. I’m paying the 100$ more which isn’t a lot.
Yeah I agree, I just don't see it being the main choice for most, cool option for those that want it, but it aint for me.
It'll be interesting to see how the eventual sales split works out over the course of the generation. I'm sure Sony doesn't want to rock the boat too much with retailers right now. I also suspect that the margins on the disc version are actually probably better (that drive isn't costing them $100). But in 3 or 4 years? Maybe that cheaper disc-less version starts to increase in availability and popularity. We'll have to wait and see. But Gamestop is not OK regardless. BC will help them some, but the future ain't so bright...
Digital might be a threat to physical games sales and their businesses? Crack reporting, CNN! I love that they also hide it behind a "why" headline - like anyone who would care to read in the first place isn't already acutely aware as to why. It's always kind of bizarre when you see articles like this literally years after the discussion around the topic has been fully explored. I mean, this discussion was happening over a decade ago at the advent of digital storefronts on consoles. Sure, the threat is increased with things like digital only consoles, streaming services and Game Pass typed services, but the threat is the same and this article really doesn't bring anything new to the discussion.
Nah most still prefer to install from a disc than use up their data.
I personally prefer to put my unlimited data to goo use!
I think this is the last generation for physical media especially if the digital edition does well.
You can’t fit a Funko POP into a disc drive anyway so I don’t know how it effects their sales.
It was quite sickening watching stacks of these POP's stacked from floor to ceiling..
Gamestop is eliminated already here in Norway. Game Over.
Funny you remember these guys saying when we move away from disc games will be cheaper overall? we've almost transitioned into digital yet it's gotten more expensive meanwhile physical shops are closing with people losing jobs and yet somehow the industry thinks a price hike is what's needed. I'm just trying to see how this benefits us at all, can someone name the ways this improved things for us?
It benefited my cat greatly, he’s loving the digital future ie not getting pushed off my lap whilst I change game discs.
Don't know why anyone would want that digital only edition PS5 from Sony. Reminds me of the PSPGo and look how Sony fared there.
As long as there physical versions of games on disc Gamestop will do fine.
I’m not sure about that . They have so much competition now and barely hanging by a thread . I think the new gen will help them but midgen they could go bankrupt as people aren’t buying their funko pops and shirts and glasses Etc enough to makeup for the games they are losing to Amazon and the likes .
Well, today i was looking at used games in a GameStop here. You could get the new (old) game for €19.99. But if you wanted the used one, you could pay less: €18.99. Oh, and the new game: €70.99 but you could get the same game too, uses, for €65.99. And again, Spider-man for Ps4 was €40,98 but if you wanted an old one, used, for €34,98. A company like that has to disappear, i'm really sorry for the people that work there but it's hard for me to digest thieves.
This digital only console’s sales has nothing to do with the inevitable. Digital and games as a service is the future. Not physical releases. First was movies, games are next.
The deal is great for people who like digital games at least it has the same specs as the PS5 that can play discs unlike Series S. Me I don't go digital I am going disc kinda hard to play PS4 games I all ready own on a console that is digital only. And a new digital edition of PS5 isn't going to save Game Stop they dug their grave a long time ago I only trade in games if they are a pile of crap I buy most my games either from Best Buy or Amazon if I am looking for used copies I go pawnshops or thrift stores now better deals.
