Why a new digital edition of PlayStation 5 could change GameStop as we know it

Founded in 1984, GameStop is one of the oldest cornerstones of video game retail. But in 2020, it's facing big risks as the industry increasingly turns to digital.

Doubt its gonna effect much, still think the disc version will sell more, they are ok, atleast for this upcoming gen lol

Agreed. Anyone who has physical discs is not going to want this. I’m paying the 100$ more which isn’t a lot.

Yeah I agree, I just don't see it being the main choice for most, cool option for those that want it, but it aint for me.

It'll be interesting to see how the eventual sales split works out over the course of the generation. I'm sure Sony doesn't want to rock the boat too much with retailers right now. I also suspect that the margins on the disc version are actually probably better (that drive isn't costing them $100).

But in 3 or 4 years? Maybe that cheaper disc-less version starts to increase in availability and popularity. We'll have to wait and see.

But Gamestop is not OK regardless. BC will help them some, but the future ain't so bright...

Digital might be a threat to physical games sales and their businesses? Crack reporting, CNN!

I love that they also hide it behind a "why" headline - like anyone who would care to read in the first place isn't already acutely aware as to why. It's always kind of bizarre when you see articles like this literally years after the discussion around the topic has been fully explored. I mean, this discussion was happening over a decade ago at the advent of digital storefronts on consoles. Sure, the threat is increased with things like digital only consoles, streaming services and Game Pass typed services, but the threat is the same and this article really doesn't bring anything new to the discussion.

Nah most still prefer to install from a disc than use up their data.

I personally prefer to put my unlimited data to goo use!

I think this is the last generation for physical media especially if the digital edition does well.
