A closer look at PS5 ray tracing in Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered

Digital Foundry - We're finally getting to see more of the launch wave of PlayStation 5 titles, with Insomniac revealing a first look at hardware accelerated ray tracing effects in Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A huge improvement is clearly evident in reflections from the tallest skyscraper to the smallest puddle, but bafflingly, the reveal was met with some vitriol on social media. Artefacts and compromises were highlighted, with some even suggesting that we weren't seeing ray tracing at all. The reality is clear though: hardware RT is an emerging feature on brand new consoles developers are just getting to know, it's computationally expensive so compromises are inevitable - and what we're seeing here is very impressive stacked up against similar hybrid RT implementations seen in the PC space.

Who said it wasn’t real ray tracing?

A foolish fanboy online?

blackblades1677d ago

They were saying, how trashy it was. Like the objects in the window were missing and what not. Makes sense to not have full ray tracing its to taxing. Maybe ps6 they can get the full thing without cutting corners. Maybe some how decrease the expensiveness of ray tracing like a alternative version or fake RT.

RT is expensive. No easier way to say it. We've seen it in the prior PC RT-featured titles.
It's not a magic mirror that you suddenly insert into a game because you have the basic capable hardware for it and just toggle it on.
It's inclusion in a game incurs huge new calculations in the pipeline for the GPU.
You have to tune it intelligently for performance and mix with SSR and other rasterization technique(s).
Half of the time the end-user won't even notice the effects during the heat of battle. You only get to observe them when under Digital Foundry's magnifying scrutiny glass.
Fully path-traced solutions like in Quake II RTX or Minecraft RTX just tanks the modern RTX GPUs.
Better still, just observe Nvidia's new 'Marbles at Night' tech showcase. 1440 @ 30fps running on an Ampere GPU.

LordoftheCritics1677d ago (Edited 1677d ago )

Looks really good. The final outcome is wonderful.

I'd rather have a fully realised world vs a fully realised reflection only. These hardware have limits.

zahdab1677d ago (Edited 1677d ago )

wasn't the world fully realized already on ps4 ? the whole point of the ps5 remaster is these enhancements and seeing that its really a choice between 60fps and some enhancements I don't see it as a remaster but rather as added toggles for some extra features that could've been patched into the ps4 version with a ps5 patch ... if these enhancements came free i'd say i am all for it ...
it's unfortunate that fans aren't pushing Sony to treat them like other platforms ... almost all remastered pc games are free upgrades to existing versions and same goes for many upgrades that Microsoft offered on Xbox one x and will offer on on their next gen... guess fans are content get less for the money ... to each his own...
I am buying most 3rd party games on pc and just getting ps5 for the exclusives will probably not buy any at the launch price tax that sony is imposing that up until now is non existing on xbox and pc where games still launch at 60$

derek1676d ago

Zahdab you are lying, reading that comment there is no way you're getting a ps5, stop it.

zahdab1676d ago (Edited 1676d ago )

@derek i am getting a ps5 and i have my pre-order down already ... as i have gotten a ps4 a ps3 and a ps2 in the past just because i am not bending over backwards for sony doesn't mean that i dont enjoy their games ... i have owned every single ps4 exclusive and i have gotten most of them at launch and multiple collectors edition ( Spiderman being one) anyhow believe what you want

LOGICWINS1677d ago

"From what we can tell from the released footage, the 60fps performance mode sticks with the screen-space reflections seen in Spider-Man on PS4 - the key limitation being that only detail in the camera view can be reflected, leading to many visual discontinuities."

I'm assuming the final version will have RT along with 60fps in the performance mode at 1440p. The Demon Souls' footage we saw ran at 60fps and had ray-tracing in it.... that game is much more graphically intensive than Spiderman. I don't see a reason why we can't have RT and 60fps at the same time. If Bluepoint can do it, Insomniac should be able to.

Bathyj1677d ago

I read it was
4k30 with RT or
4k60 without RT.

I would much prefer they had a 1440p60 with RT mode.

LOGICWINS1677d ago

DF is making assumptions based off of the old footage we saw. There could very well be a 1440p/60fps RT mode.

Remember this video?
https://m.youtube.com/watch...

DF initially didn't believe we would ever get a 60fps mode for Spiderman on PS5....and they ended up being wrong.

The truth will be revealed soon.

The more options the better.

FanboySpotter1677d ago

Gotta keep in mind that demons souls is a ps3 game but remade too. Also too many corridors so it goes easier on the hardware. Ray tracing shouldn't be that much of an issue with that game. Spiderman being open world and all that is a different story.

Amplitude1677d ago (Edited 1677d ago )

Demon's Souls on PS5 is not a PS3 game in any way.
Its a remake built from the ground up and - even though its not my type of game - its one of the most impressive visual showcases on the system lol. The fact that a game called Demon's Souls exists on PS3 means absolutely nothing and def doesn't make the ps5 Demon's Souls any less of a technical achievement. But i see your point about corridors vs open world.

Im just giving you a hard time cause i still remember when Ratchet and Clank PS4 released and N4G comments downplayed its graphics as non-impressive since it was "just a ps2 game". lmao just goofy

Anyway, do we know that Demon's Souls PS5 runs at 4K 60fps with ray tracing? I find that super incredibly hard to believe considering the ps5 GPU is comparable to a 2060 Super which absolutely couldn't do that at 4K, depending on the Ray Tracing features.
Maybe with some sort of DLSS solution or checkerboarding or heavy dynamic resolution i suppose. Or if they're just using it for shadows like CoD:MW. ....that's most likely the case, actually. Baked lighting and then ray traced shadows and SSR for reflections.

I guess we'll see. Stoked for the PS5 <3

Zhipp1677d ago

iirc they said Demons Souls did not use raytracing in performance mode.

1nsomniac1676d ago

That makes absolutely no sense or logic whatsoever!

Two completely different games. One designed as an ultra slow game and one designed an incredibly fast game to say they should both run the same regardless of features is a ridiculous thing to say. I’m trying to work out if you were really being sarcastic or not...

Edgelordsupreme1676d ago

Not to mention one is open world, and the other is very much not an open world game. It's all launch software, I don't understand why anyone is acting like how the launch software runs is indicative of how all software will behave over the years of the platform.

Bruh1677d ago

The implementation isn't the best, but its also a launch title. I was blown away by Spiderman on PS4 Pro and I have no doubt Insomniac's engineers will continue to improve RT effects as the generation continues

Those missing leaves, kills it for me

Amplitude1677d ago (Edited 1677d ago )

Guess you don't have the slightest idea how RT works and didn't even watch the video before commenting.
Very cool

Skate-AK1676d ago

I can't help to think he was being sarcastic.

At least it isn't missing the all important grass.

Players Are Skeptical That GTA 6 Will Look Like the Trailer

We all saw the life-like new trailer for GTA 6, and basically everyone was speechless; now, when the initial hype died down, the players are a bit skeptical that the game will look like the trailer.

RaidenBlack9h ago

I have my slight doubts as well. To my eyes, the visuals in first trailer looks marginally better.
I presume there might be different visual preset(s) for cutscenes, and gameplay and the game'll seamlessly transition between the two.
Then again, they made GTA V possible on a PS3 and RDR2 on an Xbox One. So ... fingers crossed, I guess.

darthv729h ago

With the way they made this trailer... it looks more like a fast and furious movie than a GTA game. I wouldnt be surprised if this will get a mod on PC to replace Jason and Lucia with Dom and Letty.

RaidenBlack9h ago

I want them replaced by Phil and Jim Ryan models.
The bed scenes'd be quite metaphorical, with current Xbox injecting its games to PS library, Phil'll be knocking up Ryan.

abstractel2h ago

I'm a long-time dev (am I allowed to mention this here?), worked/working on triple A games, and I don't blame people for being skeptical. To be fair, most of my dev friends were also skeptical Black Myth was going to turn out as well as it did (mostly because it came from an unknown dev). GTAVI looks _incredible_ and the "running on PS5" text on the trailer and not specifying PS5 Pro makes me even more skeptical. Also curious how they'll swing the Series S version. Having said that, it's been in development for what, 10 years(?) with an almost unlimited budget and attracting the most talented developers in the industry. With those resources it's possible.

Obscure_Observer8h ago

"I have my slight doubts as well. To my eyes, the visuals in first trailer looks marginally better."'

Do not fear.

Cut scenes can always look amazing.
Gameplay is what we see the majority of time when playing the game.

Killzone 2 says hi.

Initial trailer "omg, no way that's real!"

Game: looks even better.

Rockstar tweeted this

"Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5, comprised of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes."

I will wait for PC version it will be the best version. Sucks to wait but it is what it is

Lightning776h ago

I 100% believe that's what the game will look like. Presentation and high fidelity graphics are finally starting to shine later in the gen so expect this game to look as advertised.

darthv726h ago

Oh it will.... on the Pro. All the effects and reflections look to exceed anything ever done on a base 5 before.

cloganart3h ago

I'm expecting a big resolution and FPS bump instead of marginally different effects like that.

Flawlessmic3h ago

Rockstar have come out and come firmed trailer was a mixture of gameplay/kinematics and that it was all running on a base ps5.

The game will look as advertised they literally have a team of like a 100 people working on this and apparently a cost of a billion dollars to make.

This game will be super optimised!!!

andy854h ago

GTA games always look as good if not better than their trailers

Ninver4h ago

That's cause it won't. This was all cinematic in-engine footage. It's always doll'd up for trailers.
