Are You Worried About the Future of Western RPGs on PlayStation?

With Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media, and therefore Bethesda Game Studios, the PS5 has potentially lost out on a Western RPG powerhouse. Now that Bethesda joins inXile and Obsidian Entertainment under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella, the team in green has established something of a genre monopoly.

no i own a pc

edit: and if anything this will get sony to make a western rpg and it will be glorious

Viking_mo1709d ago

Yeah its called Horizon. Not as popular as Elderscrolls but give it time

1709d ago
Sonic-and-Crash1709d ago (Edited 1709d ago )

tbh never cared for Western RPG s ....Capcom do it far better (namely Dragons Dogma and Monster Hunter )

Also Horizon proves Sony knows how to create quality western stuff

bouzebbal1709d ago

No because they'll remain multi platform.next question please?

CaptainHenry9161709d ago (Edited 1709d ago )

"Heck, Horizon Zero Dawn made it onto our best PS4 RPGs list, where it still commands a high ranking."

They did a good job with Horizon and I did like Horizon better than Fallout

UnSelf1709d ago

Horizon is a better game than fallout. Not a better rpg

NecrumOddBoy1709d ago (Edited 1709d ago )

After Fallout 4 and 76, I am not as confident that the Fallout magic is still there. I am pretty sure all these games will come to PS5 anyway so not super worried. If ESVI doesn’t come to PS5, that’ll be a serious bummer. It’s irritating to force people to buy a console to play former third party games on a subscription service. If it was a generally a second party company then not a problem but they could possibly sever many series off from here on out; that’s a dirtbag business move. Good on Todd Howard though he’s probably got so many millions of dollars that he’s got that Scrooge McDuck swim in pool vault.

Also, this is the 1,267th dump on Sony article from Push Square, this week.

anast1709d ago

@Unself which fallout are you talking about? 3,4 and 76 were not solid rpgs.

Mr_cheese1709d ago

Personally, I dont feel Horizon can replace or replicate Elder Scrolls. They are completely different games and if Microsoft do go down the route of exclusively releasing on MS platforms, I will miss the franchise a lot!

There is the argument of owning more than one console or also getting a PC however, due to time and money i tend to be a one console person.

Here is hoping deep down finally comes out hahaha

Unknown_Gamer57941709d ago

Hmmm...not quite the same type of game, but I do agree that Horizon is awesome.

CantThinkOfAUsername1709d ago

I wouldn't really call Horizon Zero Dawn an RPG. Action Adventure with RPG elements is more fitting (since there's no Character Creation, no classes, and no stats).

crazyCoconuts1709d ago

Also Days Gone in addition to HZD. I don't know if it's important that the game ticks all the RPG boxes, like custom character creation or numbers for stats. Big open world adventure with plenty of abilities/weapons/armor to level up, that's probably good enough.

orakle441709d ago

No, Horizon is not a RPG, its an open world action game, but not a RPG.

S2Killinit1709d ago

Sony will simply make its own, if, elder scrolls goes xbox/pc only. Watch them make a better game.

Drakul1708d ago

looool.......forza horizon is more rpg than robot dog killing game.period.

I thought the article said on Playstation? That's good that you own a PC because many PS fans were pretending to own PCs and now if you want to play the next Elder Scrolls, Doom, and anything else from Bethesda, you will have to or be left out in the cold. PC/XBOX/Xcloud/Gamepass

1709d ago
Profchaos1709d ago (Edited 1709d ago )

Bethesda's game requirements are often so low you wouldn't need a gaming rig to play them a typical modern media rig will run even their newest games at 60fps e.g fallout 4 came out in 2015 at the time I played it with a rig I built in 2009 and just put a updated 760 in it which was barely a 2gb card flawlessly. These days I have upgraded to a 2070 and 8700k so I'm ready for the next gen of Bethesda regardless of platform

I don't know the future but their games have never been all that demanding.

So yes I think a large number of people will be capable of playing these games on a PC

I don't think people are pretending to own PC's they are pretty common tools these days especially in the work from home era

kneon1709d ago

I've got plenty of PCs, but it doesn't really matter since its been years since they released anything worth buying.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen1709d ago

The article is asking a general question, so people who can play games on PC have nothing to worry about. Right?

ILostMyMind1708d ago

Dude, get off that shit. Everyone has a PC.

DEEHULK881708d ago

ILOSTMYMIND Of course everyone has a PC, but the question is ....Do thry play games on it? I have a PC but it is judt for serious work and not game playing. Most of these people would brag about having a PC to play Xbox games, are some of the same people asking if Bethesda stuff is going to still be on Playstation. If you have a PC then it shouldn't matter if their stuff is going to still come on Playstation or not. Just play it on your gaming PC that you have been talking about for years. PC is Microsoft's platform and they want you to buy it on PC, Xbox, or Android through Gamepass. Consume it any way you want to.

I didn't realize PCs were PlayStations.

ILostMyMind1708d ago (Edited 1708d ago )

Well, some say PC is Microsoft's platform, so ...

porkChop1708d ago

Windows is Microsoft's platform, and they were previously launching their games exclusively on the Windows Store. So I would say that's a little bit different.

CaptainHenry9161709d ago (Edited 1709d ago )

Hey I knew PC/PS5 was going to be the way to go next generation. I just hope Microsoft don't change their mind and put their exclusives only on Xbox. Windows gamepass anyone

DEEHULK881709d ago

They want you in their ecosystem and if you get into it that way, they are more than happy to welcome you in. Either way Xbox/PC/Gamepass/Xcloud they are happy to take your money.

Skuletor1709d ago

It's baffling how some users on N4G can't wrap their head around the fact that people can use more than one gaming platform, or pick up on your implication that you'll have a PS5 and PC for gaming

phoenixwing1709d ago

some n4g users are just trolls and when they troll xbox they make up that they own a pc, so when it comes time to actually take advantage of the pc they get butthurt about it.

strifeblade1709d ago

You might have PC but not Everybody has a 4k gaming machine.

phoenixwing1709d ago

@strife

i game on a 2k monitor so you are right. 4k is a novelty for marketing. I'm much more impressed with sony's i/o bandwidth and ssd than i am that it does 4k. 1440p is the sweet spot to me

Because Fallout 76 was such a gem and Todd Howard the personification if honesty and customer care. Why do these writers act as if Bethesda is the only source of Western RPGs? And as for the ones they do make why are those titles suddenly being polished and put on a pedestal as if they are the gold standard?

DJStotty1710d ago

Because Morgan, buggy as they are (fallout 76 was a good idea but executed wrong imo)

Bethesda games, tend to be really good. Here's hoping they get the financial backing to update the engine they use for Elder scrolls/fallout and who knows how good they could become.

Hakuoro1709d ago

I bet if I looked through your comments before Microsoft bought it you talked badly about it just like everyone else.

Ghostbob1709d ago

Bethesda games are bad only Skyrim was good and that took years to get better.

UltraNova1709d ago

Hakuoro,

I bet if we looked at everyone who is super excited about MS buying Bethesda you'd find them shitting on them...the irony.

Godmars2901709d ago

How was a dumbed downed entry in a series that's been dumbed down with almost every entry - Vegas aside of course - honestly a good idea? If you're going to do a Fallout MMO, likely the best way would to have groups of player from the same active vault/town/raider hangout either working together or against each other while also being able to switch which group they're in. Or rather, that's an example of the effort required to do Fallout as an MMO. Much of the power fantasy that's seems to have taken over needs to go certainly.

With Bethesda and Obsidian now under the same roof something good for

DJStotty1709d ago (Edited 1709d ago )

@Hakuoro

Be my guest, and please repost the comments here if you find any of me bad mouthing Bethesda games.

I double dare you.

I personally like all Bethesda games, and have owned every elder scrolls and fallout, even fallout shelter.

I am just excited about the games coming to gamepass, not fussed about who owns them.

I also touched on how buggy Bethesda games are, which is a fact, ES and Fallout tend to have bugs at launch, but overall they are still good games.

DJStotty1709d ago

You found any yet Hakuoro?

Or are you struggling? commenting for clicks i see.....

"Why do these writers act as if Bethesda is the only source of Western RPGs?"

I actually think CDPR and From Software is better at making RPGs than Bethesda but that's my opinion. I enjoyed the Witcher series and Dark Souls/Bloodbourne series more than the Fallout and Elder Scrolls. But I did like Elder Scrolls Oblivion better than Skyrim

xTonyMontana1709d ago (Edited 1709d ago )

Yeah, CDPR make the best RPGs

fiveby91709d ago

Frankly Obsidian is better at RPG's than Bethesda. Bethesda has underwhelmed for years now.

crazyCoconuts1709d ago

Now you've done it Captain!
MS acquisition of CDPR incoming! ;-)

BeOpenMinded1709d ago

Oblivion and morrowind were better imo. Fallout 3 was good but new vegas better... Moot point since obsidian and inxile who do fallout better is under same roof

CaptainHenry9161709d ago

@Beopenminded
They can't touch CDPR. You will see when Cyberpunk comes out

DJStotty1709d ago

I would agree there Tony, looking forward to Cyberpunk and still playing red dead 2.

76 was a side game made by an unproven studio (BattleCry Studios under the Bethesda name), regardless of 76 the mainline Fallout & TeS games sell more than pretty much all other WRPGs combined baring the Witcher series, Bethesda along with Obsidian and the guys making the Wasteland games ect make up a pretty big chunck of the popular series in the genre.

anast1709d ago

Bethesda still agreed to release 76.

Vegamyster1709d ago

Sure but everyone knew it was an online spin off and not mainline traditional RPG, i never defended the games quality because it was crap when it launched lol.

xTonyMontana1709d ago

Exactly, CDPR is where it's at imho.

NEXUS-61709d ago

Morgan - That's what I'm finding confusing about all this, suddenly F76 is a distant memory.

What was their last RPG? SKYRIM? This was a bad buy from ms.

I think PlayStation gamers are fine with JRPG and CDPR, Bethesda games for my mind aren't very good.

morganfell1709d ago (Edited 1709d ago )

It’s a mystery to me. Not really, I know why they are suddenly being praised. But this is the company that has been rightfully given a beating for their antics and quality of titles like Fallout - you don’t need NPCs - 76. You know, the game that has an Xbox One user score of 3.2 on metacritic.

No, because there still is RPG developers like Bioware, Spiders, Deck 13, Larian, Piranha Bytes and Topware Interactive that will bring their games to the PS5.

Plus that doesn't even include JRPGs that will be on the PS5 too.

DJStotty1710d ago

Bioware lmao,

Yeah they are doing well the last few years #savethequarians

Imalwaysright1709d ago

They were once my favorite studio. Today I wouldn't have them in the top 10 best studios in the industry.

oof461709d ago

The people who made that studio great are all gone. Sad, really. Bioware was topnotch, when it came to Western RPGs.

Darkborn1709d ago

Same thing with Bethesda. They've been serving trash for years.

xTonyMontana1709d ago

Yeah they are soon to be heading to EA's graveyard

Unknown_Gamer57941709d ago

Dude, where were my Quarians in Andromeda? It still wouldn't have been as good as the original trilogy, but at least one of my favourite races wouldn't have been missing.

DJStotty1709d ago

They screwed everyone with Mass Effect Andromeda when they asked everyone to buy a comic to see what happened to the Quarian ark.

That was the last middle finger i took, not bought anything Bioware since.

nope, cause in my case I never ever bought a Playstation console for western RPGs, honestly I think I never actually bought a western RPG for any of my PS consoles, still couple weeks back I bought Fallout 4 for my PC it was dirt cheap lol, it looks nice playing in all high settings at 60 fps, got all they way up to the part when you get the armor suit whatever name is and since then haven't play it, so what was the question again? :D

MrDead1710d ago

This is the problem we now face, having tax dogging tech giants buying publishers because they are too creatively bankrupt to create and add to the gaming world.
Google, Amazon and Apple will no doubt be doing the same soon.

DJStotty1710d ago

You would carry a different tune if it was Sony that aquired Zenimax

MrDead1710d ago

No, it would make Sony the a******s.
Some people care more about the gaming community than platform alliances.

RememberThe3571709d ago

Why would they need to? Sony hasn't had a problem developing IP.

Putting Ads in a pay-to-play Premium title? Well done Microsoft. Well done /s This is really scummy.

jjb19814d ago

This game will never change because these sweatlords love buying up all the skins and bundles that become obsolete the following year. They're the ones perpetuating Activision's greed.

VenomUK4d ago

If Microsoft introduces adverts into its other games I hope it can do them without disrupting the immersion of the game world. So for example in the new Fable game it would look out of place if there was a billboard advertising Cadillacs.

A far better way to do it would be to have a wizard conjure a 'dream cloud' in front of your character and then in the cloud you can see the Cadillac car and see the text with price and availability and hear a booming sales voice promoting the car. That would work so well as it wouldn't be a billboard and completely, 100%, fit in with your character's adventuring in Albion. Doesn't that sound so much better?!

crazyCoconuts4d ago

@venom, or how about our of 100 farts in Albion, 1 of them has a Cadillac pop out

VenomUK4d ago

@crazyCoconuts That’s undeniably off-beat - but it could really work!

SteamOS seems to destroy Windows 11 on gaming performance and battery life, as well as usability

The first direct and natively supported comparison between identical Windows 11 and SteamOS gaming hardware is here. And it's pretty much a bloodbath for Microsoft.

"And it's pretty much a bloodbath for Microsoft."

OOOKAY! ..Interesting choice of words for that topic lol

ocelot074d ago

Maybe a bit extreme lol. But it's really interesting. Seen one or two videos of Forza Horizon 5. One of the testers used a low end Rx 6500 xt GPU. Using windows FH5 got a average of 62fps fairly respectable. But the same setup using Steam OS using the same settings FH5 got a average of 94fps. Thats a massive gain.

ZycoFox4d ago

Racing games are pretty much always easy to run though. Look at the more demanding ones, 5-13fps gain, not bad but if you already have a decent PC to begin with those gains are small. For a handheld though I guess any boost is a decent boost.

MastaMold4d ago

Yup I would also say that the last time a Windows operating system was good was Windows XP

Software_Lover4d ago

Its an O.S. built SPECIFICALLY for gaming. Am I missing something???

Inverno4d ago

It has basic Linux in it, and you can stuff it with the Linux equivalent of all the apps your casual PC user uses on Windows. The Steam portion of it basically acts like Steam Bug Picture mode which it loads up automatically to that for a more console like experience. It isn't JUST made for gaming.

crazyCoconuts4d ago

And anyone that has tried to extend the life of PCs knows the best way to improve the performance is to replace Windows with Linux

Amplitude4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

@crazyCoconuts:
I dunno, man. I switched to Pop OS exclusively about two weeks ago and when it comes to games i've gotta say i'm a bit disappointed. I had to stop playing A Plague Tale Requiem because i was getting a fluctuating 15-20fps. On Windows I was around 45fps, letting me lock down a perfect 30. With RT. Even Ghost of Tsushima, which i had running at a perfectly locked 60 in Windows, chugged with Proton on the same settings. I had to turn on DLSS Frame Gen to achieve anything even slightly playable (while still looking nice). I really don't like the look of frame gen, not gonna lie. Had to stop playing that as well.

Even RPCS3, which one would assume would run better in Linux, is noticeably worse. Siren Blood Curse chugs like crazy in the split screen segments when it otherwise never did. Plus HDR just isn't possible. I'll say the mandatory UE4 shader compilation step does solve the stutters that otherwise destroy Windows games, though. That's one plus. Needs some work, though. Maybe native Linux games are better.

Still worth it to get away from Microsoft tracking my every move and throwing ads at me every chance they can. Plus it looks CLEAN as hell. Likely never going back to Windows.

crazyCoconuts4d ago

@amp, yeah totally agree. While Linux as an OS is clearly leaner and faster, as long as we're relying on compatibility layers for games, things can get squirrelly on a case by case basis. Publishers need more Linux gamers to justify a separate build target, so it's kinda a chicken and egg problem right now

badz1494d ago

@Sorftware_Lover

Aren't you forgetting the fact that almost all games are "made for Windows"?

crazyCoconuts4d ago

It would be a long road, but that could change. At least a start would be ensuring all games run under proton. Eventually moving away from DirectX. That's probably wishful thinking though

Petebloodyonion4d ago

Should we be surprised?
Steam OS is built solely for gaming, whereas Windows 11 is packed with numerous security features and various overall processes.

Inverno4d ago

I switched to Mint couple months back and it was the best decision I made. Turns out my laptop isn't a complete POS, Windows is. Windows has been a complete headache since I got my laptops a few years back and Linux fixes all those problems. I don't even game on my laptop, I just use it for basic stuff and I cannot recommend switching enough.

badz1494d ago

having the same problems right now with no way back. I have been refusing W11 upgrades all this times with my PC and laptop at home - both Ryzens. but suddenly last week, both of them started to have stability issues for no reason.

the PC with RX6600XT connected to a TV keep crashing and losing display, where I had to keep reinstalling the Radeon software after each reset but no matter what I did, I couldn't get the HDMI audio working anymore despite it has been working fine all this time. the laptop was even worst, it abruptly crashed while I was using MS word and listening to music on YT and then never able to recover again. the Asus recovery, startup repair, restore point, reset windows...nothing worked!

for the PC, I said "F it" and proceeded to W11 upgrade. didn't take long and would you look at that, the Radeon software and HDMI audio working fine from the first boot. this made me think, do MS and AMD have some deal in the back, forcing users to upgrade by purposely messing up their drivers? on the other hand, my laptop was beyond saving, so I fresh installed Windows using USB. thing was, I forgot the USB installer I used was for Win11 not Win10 as I helped a friend build a PC last couple of months and he wanted W11. and yeah my laptop works now.

BUT these don't feel like upgrades at all! they both work but they are noticeably SLOWER than they were when I was on W10! like WTF MS?? it's official that W11 is a bloated, unoptimized mess of an OS that is hiding its flaws behind fast hardware!

CantThinkOfAUsername4d ago

By any chance, did you update Windows 10 recently? The May 13th update, dubbed 'The last security update for Windows 10,' is bricking a lot of Windows 10 PCs (including mine) to force people to upgrade to Windows 11.

badz1494d ago

@CantThinkOfUsername

yeah...I think I might have installed it without knowing. I remember reading about it but it completely skipped my mind at the time. shaddy as hell!

babadivad4d ago

I really don't like Windows 11. If you use an external HDD, it will literally stall out Windows Explorer everytime you open it. It will freeze your PC until the external drive wakes up and spins up.

It does this even when you aren't trying to access anything on the drive. It's so freaking annoying.

Windows 10 didn't have this issue and Windows 8.1 was even better. Windows has been getting progressively slower for a while.

They need to get the Windows 8.1 team to speed this thing up. It has nice features, but it has bogged down the OS.

Features shouldn't use resources unless they are requested.

blacktiger4d ago

All corporations under same investors do that, release virus, broken drivers. That's why I hate Windows update cause they fk up on purpose
