How Oodle Kraken and Oodle Texture supercharge the IO system of the Sony PS5

Sony originally had low-end expectations of 8-9GB/s speeds based on 1.5:1 compression, but this new technology allows the company to hit 2:1 most of the time, as well as achieving 15GB/s and as high as 3:1 compression ratio for the SSD.

Hope so. I really would like no loading at all in this next gen.

Eonjay1715d ago

"PS5 Loading is too fast and it means Sony is anti-consumer"

Seeing what actual devs have to say just makes me so much more excited. Demon's Souls devs are talking about how much less painful death will be due to the fast loading times.

sushimama1715d ago

I think Ratchet and Clank 'world jumping' load times are just the beginning. Can't wait to see what Sony's 1st-Party studios can achieve in the coming years.

lifeisgamesok1715d ago (Edited 1715d ago )

I think model density and texture density will be one of the great things about having a blazing fast SSD, you will have more memory to work with since you don't have to keep everything in ram anymore

And yes, Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch, Guerrilla Games, Bend Studios, new San Diego studio and the others are going to blow our minds

Bathyj1715d ago

Naughty Dog or Santa Monica with this. Scary.

Bathyj1715d ago (Edited 1715d ago )

Since we saw that trailer I've been thinking what if ratchet just walked up slowly and they were 5 portals sitting there like open doors and you could literally walk through any one of them and be in another world, jump back out and go to another one. And that was your hub level.

Insomniac need to make a Rick and Morty game. Or Superman.

Bathyj1715d ago

Didn't Cerny say with optimised compression the IO throughput could reach 22gb. Per second? This is the realisation of that. The SSD is only half the story.

lifeisgamesok1715d ago

Yep and the compression is giving even better results than they realized so more than 22gb/s

Bathyj1715d ago

It's the whole IO that's amazing. I think the cache scrubbers and 12 priority channels on the flash controller are something people are sleeping on.

SullysCigar1715d ago

This should all but make LOD and pop-in issues a thing of the past on PS5.

morganfell1714d ago

All of that early rabble when quite a few of us discussed how this would alter the graphics environments on PS5 titles and we were laughed at and told the only benefits would be loading times. Such remarks become more hilarious with every new fact we discover about the PS5.

kneon1713d ago

@Bathyj

People weren't sleeping on it, they just didn't understand it.

This tech is just Double the amount of something that already Was high. They Just supercharged the crazy fast i/o of the ps5.

subzero19921715d ago

Oodle Kraken and Oodle texture isn't proprietary to Sony. It can be used on any console/pc. On the Rad website they say most major publishers already have licenses to their technologies so Sony including a license is redundant.

Bathyj1715d ago (Edited 1715d ago )

Yes anyone can get a licensed and run it through software. It fact half the Devs are already using it. That's why Sony has built Kraken into their decompression chip. Does Xbox even use Kraken in hardware? I thought it uses something else. I don't care enough to look it up.

Besides the compression ratio is just a multiplier of the SSD speed, of which the Ps5 is the fastest by far, but even that isn't the big deal.

It's the elimination of the bottnecks that Sony did which allows the SSD to reach its potential and makes this compression that much more effective. And let's face it, Microsoft hasn't bothered with all that They won't reach the full speed of their SSD because they don't make hardware with nuance, only brute force. Their idea of power is just slapping more low frequency GPU cores in.

waverider1715d ago

Beside the fact that Microsoft uses much more cpu power to work, where the ps5.....

SullysCigar1715d ago

^ ...cleverly reduces the CPU load using it's custom architecture.

Minute Man 7211715d ago

Microsoft has custom decompression blocks, CPU won't be needed

RightFootGames1715d ago

It's not just the speed of the SSD. What people overlook is that you can't write new data into the memory until you clear what is already in their which is why Sony's scrubbers are so important. Without that feature the PS5 would never reach such high rates on I/O throughput.

RightFootGames1715d ago

That's disingenuous, yes anyone can license the software but Sony has customized the software to work specifically with their custom hardware.

So using the base software on a generic PC isn't going to have anywhere near the performance.
