Football Manager 2021 Is Not on PS5, PS4 Because Sony Didn't Send Devkits

Soccer spreadsheet sim Football Manager 2021 will launch on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One this holiday, but both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 will be left on the bench. Asked why Sony’s systems have been excluded, Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson explained that it’s because the Japanese giant failed to provide the studio with devkits – despite requests.

Everyone all of a sudden likes football sims....

Psychotica1301d ago

All of a sudden? They've been very popular for years.

DiRtY1301d ago

WTF?!
I am still playing old sims from the 90s today.

Christopher1301d ago (Edited 1301d ago )

It's the most popular, multi-million selling, MTX heavy app on mobile of its type. It's really freaking popular.

Jericho13371300d ago

That’s like someone in the UK saying ‘suddenly people care about American football games’. FM is massive over here, don’t understand why Sony wouldn’t want it on their console.

xTonyMontana1300d ago

Do you see Europeans scratch their heads wondering what all the fuss was about with the Madden controversy? Don't be that guy, Football Manager formerly known as Championship Manager has been one of the best selling PC games every year for nearly 30 years now.

Newcastle United Taking on Europe - A Football Manager 24 Story, Part 1 Life After Howe

David Writes: "Newcastle United Taking on Europe – A Football Manager 24 Story. Join us as we look to continue on from where Eddie Howe left off and challenge Europe's elite. But can we hold our own, while managing a small squad and a tough domestic fixture list?

I want to get straight into the meat of this series, but I'll go over some “ground rules” in Part 1 and then we'll leave it at that. After, we'll jump straight into the story and get to work at making Newcastle United one of the best teams in the world."

Football Manager boss disputes PlayStation's "value destructive" Xbox Game Pass claim

Among the many, many claims and discoveries flying around in the wake of Microsoft's ongoing FTC lawsuit over the attempted purchase of Activision Blizzard, one particular quote stands out: PlayStation boss Jim Ryan's accusation that Xbox Game Pass and other subscription-based services are "value destructive" to video games.

Do we need articles from every person in the industry when they offer an opinion on this FTC trial? Its all show and false opinions to help their cases. Jim Ryan doesn't believe this of Gamepass anymore than Satya wants to end Exclusives.

IMissJimRyan294d ago

Yes. I want to read dozens of opinions about it from people inside the industry.

I'm already full of the hundreds of comments from entitled gamers.

For low budget indie games from no-name studios, Gamepass and + Extra/Premium might be a safe bet, but for studios dropping $200million + games who need to recoup those costs with sales, it is not a safe bet at all, and is harming AAA game development.

Flawlessmic294d ago

I really dont understand why this is so hard to understand from all parties lol

Game pass being good for a game really depends on the type of game, gamepass is fantastic for indie games and lower budget AA games or games like football managers that dont cost a bomb to make, but there's no way you can recuperate a big AAA single player games budget back by releasing it on gp unless ms basically pays for 90% of the cost the game took to make.ms can do it for there titles cause they can take the hit with the end goal being more subscribers but 3rd party big releases can't do that.

Look at final fantasy 16 sold 3 mill in less than a week and will only sell more.

CONTEXT IS IMPORTANT and not all games are created equally, so yes for this devs game, gamepass would be great, change the game to ff16 and there is no way its profitable for square enix unless ms pay them majotiy of the budget which obvs they wont do so yea, i dont think its rocket Science

jznrpg292d ago (Edited 292d ago )

Some small devs get burned too if they don’t get the user count needed to make up costs. Big games will fail for sure if at launch, but some medium to small games will also fail and some will succeed. It depends on a lot of factors, when it releases , how much exposure it gets , the type of game it is and what’s around it at the time and quality of course.

Unless they get development costs covered (which I’m sure most don’t) at the start there is a lot of risk going on a sub service day one period.

mkis007292d ago

Ryan said publishers, he did not say developers. The only reason a publisher would want a gamepass release for a Billed AAA game is if they dont trust the quality.

Abnor_Mal292d ago (Edited 292d ago )

“ The only reason a publisher would want a gamepass release for a Billed AAA game is if they dont trust the quality.”

Question: Was Lord of the Rings: Gollum a game that released day one on Gamepass? Seeing as the internal development studio for Daedalic Studio is “closing down”, after the game failed.

mkis007292d ago (Edited 292d ago )

Did xbox want that game? So far very few highly anticipated games have launched day 1 gamepass aside from xbox studios.

jznrpg292d ago

What’s that have to do with anything? If it was on game pass you think it would have done better ? garbage game is going to do bad anywhere just like Redfall

Elda292d ago

If GP was so fab why isn't the service littered with current AAA games when they are released.

VersusDMC292d ago

Here is a developer that has concers with gamepass that is not as bias as the Sega employee for which their company just recently advertised several games at a Microsoft conference with some of the games coming to gamepass.

"For us, it's nothing but positive on all three platforms. Jacobson added that as a Sega-owned studio, they "run quite a tight ship." So Sports Interactive doesn't "tend to do deals that are bad for any parts of the business."

-Why would you believe the guy who works for Sony about one of his competitors services that offers day 1 games that his own service does not??? I mean as long as he's going to continue to ask ps plus subscribers and non-subscribers alike to fork over $70 for Sony's next game and so on, of course he's gonna hate Gamepass.

IMissJimRyan294d ago

Yeah. That's why I believe in some random guys over obscure websites with anime or games profile pictures. Those people are worth my trust.

Crows90294d ago

You know why you're wrong?
Would a company choose to go on a service with less players or more? Why would they opt for gamepads over ps extra?

Makes no sense...one of them has a bigger audience it can reach

Asplundh293d ago

You realize GP has about 4x the subscribers right?

1Victor293d ago

@aspl:” You realize GP has about 4x the subscribers right?”
Any link to prove that claim or you just got a sticky numbers keys

Petebloodyonion293d ago

@Crows
But the point made by Jim Ryan is that all big publishers "don't like Game Pass"
https://www.pcmag.com/news/...
well Sega doesn't seem to mind (according to this dev)
EA surely doesn't mind since they have EA play pro with day 1
Ubisoft sure doesn't mind since they have UBIplay with day 1
Remedy sure didn't mind giving countless versions of Control and praising the move in a shareholder meeting.

Now the only reason why it's not day 1 on PS+ is because Sony doesn't want day 1 but fears not the game will come later on PS+ Extra like the majority of Sega games that are ALWAYS offered on all potential subscription services.

Asplundh293d ago

@1Victor

GamePass 25 million
https://headphonesaddict.co...

PS Extra 6.1 million
https://www.pushsquare.com/...

I thought this was common knowledge, even Sony said that GamePass "has a substantial lead" last year.

Crows90293d ago

@asplundh

Not the point I'm making.
Which has a greater base? PlayStation.

We already know that Xbox pays developers to launch exclusively on gamepass and skip other services.

If it's actually great for developers to launch on gamepass then it would be even better for them to launch of ps extra...this would push ps extra more and has far greater potential.

They don't do that because Microsoft forks over tons of cash.

Microsoft focus is competing with gamepass and sonys is competing with quality 1st party.

Microsoft knows they'd have a hard time getting gamers to buy their new IP since physical sales are much lower on their console. So they decided to have a content dump known as gamepass. All future and past purchases are geared towards that content dump.

Imagine of all those day 1 games we're going to ps extra instead? It would have grown by a lot.

Asplundh293d ago

"Not the point I'm making.
Which has a greater base? PlayStation."

That doesn't make any sense with your first comment. You said "ps extra", you assumed the larger install base meant a higher sub count and it doesn't.

shinoff2183293d ago

Asplundh

Let's not forget ps plus has three tiers so why only bring up extra.

Also it's revamped version has only been around since September. Another part we can't forget is there's still plenty of us that didn't get digital shoved down our throats and we still enjoy physical copies. I still for whatever reason still subscribe to both but I weirdly use it as demos like if I like the game I'll just buy the physical release ie I finally just tried Sakuna of rice and ruin and I enjoyed it for the first hour or so. So it's on my buy physical list, atomic heart would've been another but I know from reading and seeing I will enjoy that.

Asplundh292d ago

@Shin
Premium was included in that number. The first tier, PS Essential doesn't allow you to access a library of games apart from the monthly 2 rotating games similarly to how Xbox Gold works. So if were talking about which service gives a bigger audience for 3rd party's it makes sense to exclude Essential.

S2Killinit294d ago

Maybe depends on the type of game you are developing. If I’m a small company with mediocre game, I might want the security of knowing that my filler game will generate a small but guaranteed amount of money on a service, but if Im making a quality game I may want to stay away from a service where my game will simply be the excuse for people to sign up while I dont get the benefit of putting in the hard work of making a proper game. Game pass incentivizes developers to make mobile style filler games. It just has to be catchy, but doesnt have to actually be a good game to serve its purpose.

Petebloodyonion293d ago

Come on that's BS there are crappy AAA games heavily promoted by Sony like the Calisto Protocol just like there are a bunch of small games like Vampire Survivors which won tons of awards and got released on day 1 on Game Pass.
Heck I could point out that some top 10 games from last year consisted of a lot of games offered on Gamepass
https://www.gamespot.com/ga...
Now we could debate the list but I doubt we could debate about the value of each game on it

S2Killinit293d ago

Its not BS, there is not doubt that services lend themselves well to filler games. The fact that there are AAA games that are not done well or indie games that are awesome does not take away from the fact that a service needs filler material to keep people busy. Games like AAA story driven ones are not a good fit because they dont allow the developer to cash in on skins and what not. We all know this.

CBaoth293d ago

thank you S2K. The elephant in the room is this is a dev whose IP has NO audience on console whatsoever. So of course it's good business to take money where there is none to be made and the hundred players on console who are interested can play it for free. Fuckin idiot.

Petebloodyonion293d ago

@S2k
"The fact that there are AAA games that are not done well or indie games that are awesome does not take away from the fact that a service needs filler material to keep people busy."
And how's different from what's offered on PlayStation Store, Steam, etc?
Do you blame Gamepass for the Vita filler library, Wii, WIIu, PSP, PS1, PS2, PS3, NES?
Heck, I'm sure Game Pass is to blame for the crash in 1982.

@Cboat
"The elephant in the room is this is a dev whose IP has NO audience on console whatsoever. So of course it's good business to take money where there is none to be made and the hundred players on console who are interested can play it for free. Fuckin idiot."

So we are in agreement that subscriptions like Gamepass are good since, like in other businesses, they help artists develop new IP outside of what's expected and allow them to gain popularity leading to more money like Stray, Immortality, Vampire Survivors, Yakuza like a Dragon, etc.

S2Killinit293d ago

@perebloodyonion
So your argument is that although you know game pass results in filler content creation, other services would also result in the same thing.

Im not sure where other services came into this conversation, but you do agree that gamepass pushes even further toward a filler filled world because at least on paper it puts MS’s own catalog of games at harms way as well.

Petebloodyonion293d ago (Edited 293d ago )

@S2K
"So your argument is that although you know game pass results in filler content creation, other services would also result in the same thing."
nope, my argument is that you have 0 evidence that Gamepass generates or has more shovelware ratio compared to what's currently available or produced on a digital store (Steam, Nintendo Eshop) or another subscription service like PS+, Humble Bundle, etc).

So far we have seen that it can produce some great games like Immortality, Pentiment, TMNT shredders Revenge, Vampire Survivors, Plague Tales2, etc just like it can produce turds like Scorn and Redfall.

S2Killinit293d ago

But part of the incentive to make any of those games is that they can sell on Playstation and elsewhere.

The first two words: "For us".

I don't think anyone is saying XGP is outright bad for developers. What kind of budget do you think a Football Manager title has? Pretty subjective.

You compare that to a corporation like T2 and I think you get a different answer.

Fishy Fingers294d ago (Edited 294d ago )

Of course it hurts sales its essentially the gamble of upfront payment vs retail sales. You're "giving it away" for a fixed fee.

But when "the studio originally pitched the game to Google Stadia (RIP) but ended up partnering with Microsoft" Gamepass probably seemed a good result in hindsight huh.

RpgSama294d ago

They like it because if you release on Xbox, people do not buy games, so the best scenario is GP on Xbox to get some revenue that way and then count on sales on other platforms for profit

Tacoboto294d ago

"If they don't like the first 10 minutes? That's it. Also, if you don't make the first 10 minutes amazing, maybe it's also a problem." says the unbiased developer of an Xbox Game Studios-published game that has a 67 metacritic.

There it is. His own words. Make a mid game, get mid reactions. Seems fair. What's not fair? Blaming a service for sales woes instead of it just being an average unexciting game that no one talks about anymore six months after it launched.

phoenixwing294d ago (Edited 294d ago )

Not to be a grammar nazi but it's either "devs say" or "dev says"

Knushwood Butt293d ago (Edited 293d ago )

or 'says dev'

jznrpg294d ago (Edited 294d ago )

Unless MS is forking over many millions it clearly kills game sales.

Gamepsss will be double in price when they feel they can do it guaranteed and it will continue to go up.

I’d rather vote for games with my wallet and support the games I like instead of supporting a pool of games which many I have zero interest in.

blackblades294d ago

I still wanna know how much they paying studio to release day one.
