Tom Hopkins writes, "In shock news, Microsoft announced today that they have acquired Zenimax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Studios for $7.5 billion."
Seeing some of these prices for other companies, they definitely paid a premium, but it was definitely a powerhouse move they needed to make to get their first-party on par with PlayStation and Nintendo, and honestly, with that move alone and the potential of the other studios, this is the first generation MS could actually compete as a first-party.
.their deal with MS was probably the most obvious thing of the decade if there was an answer to the question "which studios are fiitting better to MSs profile ?? or which game companies are the best to be bought by a western software giant like MS or Google " i dont want to appear negative here ...but Bethesda lately hadnt developped any true amazing game ....although their games are all high production , well developed titles... imo they lack the artistic "mojo" in order to be named masterpieces (and to be honest here they wasted their best IP, Elders scrolls , with one cheap MMoRPG and Skyrim was never such true quality title they wanted to be, it just had huge hype sales) ....... If i was MS, i would put them immediatley to work on HALO as they showed their skill with DOOM Remakes and Wolfenstein .....which put 343 to shame
My thoughts exactly, it seems like they've rescued a sinking ship, at a very high price tag. Maybe they know something we don't. I suppose games like Fallout 76 do fit into the business model though.
How about waiting for the damn gane to be released before judging? :)
I also agree. They do put 343 to shame. I also think it would have been better if they bought Warner Brothers or Take 2. Rock* would have been huge
Microsoft made a good deal here regardless of the recent games not being super high quality... They bought the IPs and the talent now they can do whatever they want with it... Will it top Playstation first party no, not in a foreseeable future, Why? because Microsoft is focused on game pass and not on high quality AAA budget games (not to say won't have one or two) Microsoft is not interested in games like The Last Of Us or Ghost of Tsushima specially now that they have game pass to feed. That being the case the gaming landscape probably won't change and if the PS5 dominates the series X the same way PS4 did that will be a big problem for Microsoft.
For this kind of money this feels like a Microsoft move more than a Xbox move. Of I'm not mistaken MS paid more for Zenimax than Xbox has ever made in profits combined (not revenue). That tells me this is bigger than Xbox the way Mojang was bigger, in that these companies will maintain their market positions and try to make as much money for MS as possible. Imo MS bought Zenimax for the IP and tech more than they bought it to make Xbox look like a better value. MS has a terrible track record with studios but I still think the higher ups at MS let Bathesda do Bathesda and at the same time get the perk of big games on Gamepass, exclusive Xbox content, etc.
I have a feeling iD tech engine might be part of MS's overarching plan...
Why wouldn't it, right? They've had their issues with their own development and with Sony buying into Epic and working closely with them, MS having Id tech is huge get for them going forward. It won't pay off for years to come but this isn't just about tech either I can see a lot of adjustment from both companies. I don't think we'll see games as buggy as we've seen in the past from Bethesda and I think Bethesda will influence how MS makes games. From how the structure their staff to who they choose as leads to how game worlds are laid out. I think staff at Bethesda will influence all of it over the next decade.
it's a gigantic shift in one fell swoop. including the last year's worth of acquisitions they went from a 2 to a 10 on a game development scale - there must be a huge shift organizationally to transition into this. They must be dwarfing Sony's studios in terms of size now, right?
Only if those games don't release on the PS5. Last time I heard there still going to be release on the PS5 so what did they really pay for? Just putting them on gamepass?
no one knows for now, and they can always change direction anytime they want anyway, so it doesn't matter what they say now. I'm sure they'll use the studios to their advantage one way or another
Phil Spencer and Todd Howard actually clarified that. I guess you wasn't listening
If they keep most Bethesda main franchises multi-plat they can make a lot of money.
huge amount. The point that Disney bought Marvel for roughly half this amount is mind blowing.
Marvel was getting close to declaring bankruptcy years back before the purchase.
MS paid roughly less than $1b per studio (of which there are 8). Disney paid for Marvel and Star Wars for pretty much the same amount as MS did for Zenimax. Disney may have gotten two for the price of one but that one is comprised of 8 separate entities.
I still think Warner Brothers would have been a much better and bigger acquisition. The lord of the rings, mortal Kombat, DC, those are crazy IP.
Warner Bros would not sell the rights to the DC IPs. And Warner Bros doesn’t actually own Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter etc.
They still own the licensing to make them.
As far as I know AT&T owns Warner brothers and DC! So I doubt they'll ever sell!!
im not sure if they'll ever make that amount bk by buying Bethesda im not saying their games are not popular but they've always been multiplatform so far. but their games do fit into the xbox franchise. a bunch of 1st person shooters, with the exception of TES of course. and maybe The Evil within
How much does this matter if games like this or Gears or Halo end up on PC anyway?
I'm glad that Xbox can finally compete. It will give Sony a reason to improve themselves and push themselves further than ever. I hope they use really use Bethesda to their full potential though. Seeing what they've done with their other first party studios doesn't make me optimistic. That's why I ended up selling my Xbox One, there wasn't enough incentive to keep it and a PS4. Halo was destroyed by 343, and Gears of War struck gold with 2 and 3 but haven't been able to recreate the same magic.
It's a possibility they may put i.d. software in charge of developing upcoming Halo games.
buy a company that known for releasing broken games YA!!!! great idea
Honestly they got ripped off. Bethesda has been floundering and they paid more for Bethesda than disney paid for marvel and star wars franchises. That's insane. On top of that, these games may not be made exclusive to their own consoles and will probably come to other consoles.
I Think its a great buy and bathesda makes good games but other than Doom I cant really see there ips appealing to the average casual consumer ,for that kind of money they should of bought capcom . Streetfighter ,megaman, resident evil, devil may cry ,dead rising and loads of other franchises that would of been a better investment to shift mass consoles to the average casual gamer
The difference in corporate culture, is why Microsoft will never buy a Japanese studio.
Supercell was bought with more money I think.
