Jeff Grubb: "Super Mario 3D All-Stars is Nintendo knowing that it can get away with less than the bare minimum, and I don't know how to stop it."
The only way to stop Nintendo getting their way with these cash grabs is to STOP letting them get their way. Unfortunately there are misinformed parents out there that just assume the games will have been brought up to speck since the original launch, or that a collection of games would be complete. That trust is misplaced these days. Unfortunately, there are also the sheeple that will just blindly buy and praise Nintendo, rather than calling them out and demanding better before parting with their cash. Reviewers that don't mention the shortcomings should also be held responsible, in my opinion.
Well I bought the game for my kids. I know it's not the best but it's on the switch. They all wanted the game and they enjoy it. I don't think it should be a $60 game but it's my choice to buy it. The switch is a great kids console.
@Highlife If you are in the US it went down to $50 briefly on 09/18/2020 so if you bought it from a place like Amazon or Best Buy you could have received $10 back.
I bought the game cause i wanted to play mario galaxy as i skipped it on the wii cause the wii mote and motion controls was something i could not do. This collection is a cash grab and nintendo should have fully remastered these games because i can emulate Mario 64 and sunshine better than this. I normally dont support nintendo on their cash grabs which is out of control on the switch but i wanted mario galaxy. I agree its our choice to buy it but nintendo should get called out on it and not be given a pass.
I mean $60 for 3 games is not a bad price; that's $20 each. I haven't opened my copy but from what I have seen about these games I do think they should've spent time polishing these games up [especially 64] but for what it is, it's not a terrible package And making Mario 64 4:3 is mindboggling. That should've been widescreen or an option to play either widescreen of 4:3. Regardless I for one am just happy to finally play Galaxy since I skipped the Wii and Wii U. *update* actually $50 if you bought from Amazon. just seen I got a refund of $10.35* Consider this. Nintendo or any other publisher could've put forth very little effort and released 3 games like this as standalone titles for $40-60 each. And I say $40 only because I'd be hard pressed to see Mario 64 priced at $60 standalone. Sunshine and Galaxy however...
@Seraphim They’re just ROMS running on an emulator. Nintendo have done literally nothing. So yes $20 each is incredibly expensive!
Nah come on! parents don't care about that crp. Do you think they care about specks? Maybe violence or sex in games, they care about getting a good value for their money. If they buy this it will be because it is a 3x1; if they don't buy this won't be because of specks or not having galaxy 2 or the menu being generic
You can see it in the comments...god these nintendo fans are weak and pathetic. "They should be called out on this and not be given a pass, but I still paid for retail price for it anyway!" Yeah that showed them! haha
Really great article. I think in a way it does make sense to offer older games on the new platform without updating it or "remastering" it. However, it would be nicer of course to get a real remaster. Still, people do miss out on games and it's nice to have them offered.
The originals should have been added in as a bonus along side remasters. I'm sure there is many examples of this but one that comes to mind is Street Fighter 2 HD Remix. You could play the new version with the updated visuals or you could play the untouched classic.
Nah. Anything Nintendo does is gold. Every shady thing they do gets swept under the rug. No one throws a hissy fit for days upon days about the mistakes Nintendo makes.
That’s not true there’s always you guys here to tell us how shady they are they are doomed anti consumer and awful. If you keep banging the drum hard enough someone might jump ship with you. For everyone else they are obviously happy. Get over it. Zzz
"No one throws a hissy fit for days upon days about the mistakes Nintendo makes." Sure people do, you're one of them. All while defending Sony's mistakes in other articles over them deceiving people over pre-orders, PS5 exclusivity and charging $70 for some of their games.
Oh you will love the $70 games once nintendo starts charging that much and you will use an excuse like "well it's ok because that means we get larger game carts because ROM chips are expensive and nintendo needs to cover the costs"
@JustTheHypotheticals Cool story, but it isn't happening.
I was going to say exactly what Monster said; you defend and prop up Sony all the time. Apparently calling Nintendo out is fine, but leave your company alone on virtually everything. I love both companies, but I have no issue calling them out on their BS.
Aren’t you throwing a hissy fit right now? So no. People do realize that Nintendo does mistakes. People threw one at Pokemon too. Now tell us something nice about Sony, please.
How does no one see the sarcasm in Silly gameAr's comment? Also, wouldn't it make more sense that people who defend Nintendo's crappy practices will also defend Sony's price hike rather than the other way round? This is a matter of people's view on money rather than fanboyism.
I wasn’t sure if he was being sarcastic. But if he was-yes. I would agree with him that these Mario Articles are getting old.
It's not sarcasm being he's known to constantly throw shade on Nintendo/MS often, is constantly praising Sony, and always comes to Sony's defense when they pull something that is overtly negative, or objectively anti-consumer. Tldr he's a known fanboy.
Kids don't care, which is what 99% of the Switch user base is made up of. There is a reason the Switch games line up is full of shovel ware, with only a handful of great games.
Paper rounds must have gone up in wages since I was doing one. To be fair that was 20 years ago 😅🤷🏻♂️ 😂
I would really like to know the numbers of the user base. I think late teens to adults might make up 30% of the user base.
I'm a Nintendo fan, but this really was lazy. 3 games or not, they really should have put more effort into this for $60. If this is a package for people to "celebrate" the series, maybe show more than a quick cash grab, yourself.
About a year ago I seen a nice remake of Mario 64. It was fan made using the Unreal Engine. It was awesome. I think at the very least they could've remastered Super Mario 64. I love the game but, it didn't age well
It's hard to justify repurchasing a game from more than a decade ago, at inflated price nonetheless, when emulation offers you better versions for free. It's as simple as that. I mean, I bought the 3DS remakes of the N64 Zelda series so I could have them on the go, but they still don't hold a candle to what I'm offered via the emulated versions on PC.
I bought it, I enjoy it, but I absolutely agree. I have been waiting a long time to play mario 64 again and mario sunshine so I bought it anyway (sorry). I don't necessarily think they HAD to do remakes / remasters of these titles but as a big anniversary thing, for the price it was, and with the limited time thing? A big name like nintendo should have handled this much better. If they didn't want to invest time or money into these titles they probably should have just released each for maybe $10 as a virtual console title or the equivalent.
What really brings this in to the worst category is the fact that even the digital version is only going to be available for a limited time. I understand games leave the online store all the time due to partnerships, trademarks, etc expiring but in this instance Nintendo owns everything. There is no reason why it should be leaving the online store so fast.
I only want Sunshine and Galaxy as a customer I am miffed that Nintendo did not polish up and clean up Mario 64 especially since the game has a limited number run
Galaxy plays and looks terrific, and Sunshine runs and looks okay to me (though I have not tested it so much yet) . The use of the camera in Super Mario 64 is one small thing, but *sigh* ...why did they NOT add widescreen format to this remaster?? it`s the only game in this package that got 4:3 format instead , That`s really the most annoying and disappointing thing to me. No doubt, This could be better done.:/ Otherwise, their all by their all each of their own big smash hits. (just presented in a poorly done presentation/package). 7,5/10 from me.
It's not just Nintendo is it though, It's mostly just gaming in general now. Micro-transactions, Season passes, Remakes, The 5+ different editions of the same game with exclusives items....Is that gaming is mostly about now. I might be biased anyway as i quit playing current gen because of all this crap. I own a Ps2 and feeling like i'm missing out on nothing at all, Back when games used to be about having a fun time. Unlocking new Characters, Items, Levels etc by just playing the game, The game rewarding you spending the time playing. I guess at the end of the day people will still just carry on buying it, So developers keep doing it and pushing what they can get away with...Sad
Na nothing can beat being forced to buy X2 wiimotes to play 2 player on NSMBU. Apparently it's too hard for Nintendo to let you use game tablet as player 1 and only buying X1 wiimotes for player 2. This was the last straw for me no more Nintendo
Jeff Grub needs to stop talking
I'm ashamed, I bought the game, but only because I wanted the pin set. I'll soon have an RGB modded N64, played on a CRT TV, using a GCN controller on my N64 (its perfect!), which is superior than playing it on the Switch. I already have Sunshine and Galaxy as well. So yeah, I only bought it for the pin set, because I know that its going to be worth more than $60 in the future.
I didn't think Nintendo was being all that bad until I learned about the game's timed digital release and limited physical run. That right there is just a horrendous way to treat customers.
Look, nobody has the right to tell you what to buy or not buy. That being said, this has got to be the scummiest thing Nintendo has done in my memory and I hope to god this won’t set a precedent. This whole limited time availability is pretty disturbing.
i never played any of them so i bought it
The ads are srting to effect my keyboard on mibile. Fix thiis keeps fliping caps no cap. Ot: They needed to update the controls at the very least. I basically already gave up on playing mario64. When you look at what others do with remasters, this is near the bottom of the barrel. I wonder if the reason it is time limited is they knew if people saw the quality ahead of time they would delay a purchase.
