Xbox Series S: 8 New Details We've Learned

IGN learned more facts about Microsoft's low-priced next-gen console, from how it's always been a part of the plans for Microsoft, to a new feature it will get post-launch.

Looking at the specs of the SS compared to the 1X it looks to be more balanced. Pairing a speedy CPU with a comparable GPU. The 1X was off balance having a hefty GPU but weaker CPU. So games that are CPU limited on the 1X will run as they should (if not better) on the SS. That can mean improved / more stable frame rates and even increased frame rates depending on the game.

Personally i much prefer to run in performance mode on my Pro and 1X over quality. Once you get used to faster frame rates, its hard to go back.

One misconception of many people is to think XSS trades-off resolution for frame-rate performance, like almost suggesting that will run the games at faster FPS than PS5/XSX just because will render at lower resolution and lower settings.

XSS is designed to play the same games developed for XSX, at same target FPS, but with lower resolution and lower (less detailed) settings. That's literally the reason for keeping an identically CPU and the rest of the system scaled down for 1080/1440p rendering.

It will never be the case that XSS will perform better than PS5/XSX, because whatever XSS can do performance-wise, PS5/XSX will do much better, either natively or with dynamic resolution (if needs to lock at higher FPS), and always with higher (more detailed) settings too.

See Dirt 5, that offers 120fps mode on all next-gen consoles, but XSS is the worse looking one because of lower resolution and lower settings. This will be the case for every game, first-party and third-party.

I can understand the appeal of a new machine at $299, but with PS5 starting from $399 and XSS $499, the XSS seems really a bad long-term investment. Unless you just wanna have a cheap casual "ecosystem" around by intentionally skipping the true PS5/XSX generation. And if the reason is the "current TV" well, if you don't have a 4K TV, you probably don't have a 120Hz screen either, and still PS5/XSX will run with much better quality settings than the XSS on a 1080/1440p screen.

I have a 4k tv but it only does 120hz @ 1080p.

Another paid for presentation by someone me thinks, obviously my last comment was inappropriate lol or the m$ fan boys are I the house again. Not sure why it's inappropriate when I'm just stating the obvious and everyone knows it

Given the efficiency of chip design from AMD, an XSSwitch-like device isn't unreasonable to think of in 2022-23, or a redesign that could make it as small as a Switch or Apple TV.

A $200-$250 plug-and-play-sized unit will kill it for dorm rooms and kids where a big fancy TV doesn't make sense. Throw in Game Pass and the dude-bros get FIFA and Madden for next to nothing.

That genuinely, genuinely sucks. The reboot has clear flaws, but it really felt like a solid first step for this team to receive *greater* investment.

Alone in the dark is a fun game so that's unfortunate

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that the norm after a project is done?
